Enough

I sit at the vanity but time stands still. It feels like it’s been hours but I know, it can’t have been more than twenty minutes that I’ve been up. When I’m ready, I unbolt the lock and pull open the door. Standing outside my door is Ava.

“Perfect timing. Father sent me, he wants a word.”

I don’t say anything. It isn’t strange for him to call for us. Something has either happened or there is something we need to prepare for. She turns on her heel and I follow her down the hall before we turn for the stairs. We walk in silence and normally that would be fine, but Ava’s behavior is making me nervous. When she turns for the dining hall, I know something is up.

“Didn’t you say father wanted me? Why are we going to the dining hall and not his office?” I asked.

“Because we have guests and he’s… entertaining them in the dining hall,” Ava said. She doesn’t continue on and she doesn’t try to ease my fears, not that she made a habit of that. I fight the urge to fidget as we walk throug
