“ I’m sure you are all aware of what would happen to you if any of the rules are broken. In no doubt, the punishment will be severe that you would wish for nothing but death. So think twice before breaking any.” She says sternly, watching every one of us. Her face held no emotions.
“ Number one, remember to keep your head down always. More importantly, in front of the king. Only raise your heads up when asked, too. Number two, don’t even think about escaping, ever. You won’t get that far. Number three, there should be no act of disobedience or resistance against your master. These are the three major rules to survive here. Do not forget them.” “ The rest will be taken care of by Elvire. She is in charge after me. She is the one to meet if any issue you wish to discuss arises. Follow the guards, and they will take you to her.” She looked around the room. “ That’s all for now.” We stayed in line, following the guards out into a corridor. We walked down the stairs, stopping in an open hall with a lady no more than five years older than me. I couldn’t help admiring how beautiful she looked. Even with the maid gown, she stood with grace. I give it to them, they do have great skins. Every beast female I have ever come across all have this glow in them. “ Okay, everyone, listen up. There won’t be much time to list out the remainder of the rules, so they would be pasted on the wall of the hallway for you all to go through.” The lady spoke, her voice sounding so adorable. “ You get the rest of the day off, giving you a chance to mingle with other maids and get your footings on how it works here. Make no mistake, you won’t be getting any more free days after today.” Of course, we were nothing but slaves to them. “ You will each get your task before the end of the day. Your uniforms are already placed in your respective room. That’s all, you are free to pick a room.” My room, just like the other Palace, was small and plain with a tiny window by the side of the wall. But still, I had my space, which was more than enough. I walked over to where my uniforms were placed. They looked more decent and in better shape than my previous one. There wasn’t anything too unique to see in the room as I decided to take a bit of rest. I climbed onto the bed, slowly closing my eyes. It wasn’t long after that I fell asleep. ♧♧♧ I was woken up by a bang on the door, jumping to my feet. I tidied up my hair and dressed before opening the door to see the rest of the maids standing by their doors with their heads down. I followed suit, not asking a question as I kept my head down. “ heads up.” Elvire said, standing by the far end of the hall, with her hands clapped to the back. “ I hope you guys had time to go through the rest of the list.” She says, scanning through the hall. “ Without wasting any more time, I’m going to call out your name, as well as your task. Is that clear.” “ Yes, ma’am?” We all chorused together. “ Good, let’s get right into it.” She unfolds the paper in her hands. “ Bailey Norman.” A young lady, not less than twenty-five, raised her hand. “ Kitchen duties.” “ Josiane Stuart.” Just like the first lady, a petite girl my age raised her hand. “ Garden duties. ” I stopped paying attention to the list of names being called until I heard my name and my head shot up. “ Micaela Whitlock” I raised my hand, trying my best not to shake even though I was failing miserably. “ You will be attending to the King’s quarter.” “ What......” I whispered, a look of horror on my face. “ You are to serve the king as a personal servant.” Elvire says, giving me a pointed glare. I stood frozen, my hands clenched tightly to my clothes as Elvire carried on with the names like she hadn’t just assigned me to death himself. “ I suggest you get as much rest as possible today because tomorrow you resume back to work. From 5am in the morning to 9pm. Remember, tardiness won’t be allowed. You will be punished if you are even a second late.” Elvire’s warning rang through the hall. She gave us one last look before leaving the hall. As she left, the hall was filled with silence. I could feel eyes on me, the glance of sympathy being thrown my way from both old and new maids. The maids cleared out of the hall, going back to their respective room. I, on the other hand, remained rooted in my spot. Numbness filled me up. My mind and body refused to co-operate with me. I swore I could hear my heart beating fast, I’m surprised it was still intact. Struggling to move my legs, going back to my room. I fell to the bed, a lone tear fell for my eye. I guess I will be seeing my family soon. ♤♤♤ Don’t forget to leave a comment and follow my I*******m page @queeniieees for more of my stories. The sound of banging on my door was what woke me up the next morning. Getting out of bed, I cringed when my feet touched the cold floor. Opening the door, I saw the petite girl tasked to work at the garden. She had a smile on her face, sticking her hand out for me to take as she introduced herself. “ Hi, I’m Josiane. It’s a pleasure to meet you.” “ Hi, I’m…” “ Micaela, I know. Honestly, everyone does.” Josiane winced, giving me a pitiful look. “ You’re the girl chosen as the King’s personal maid.” Not knowing what to say, I opted to say nothing, not at all shocked by her information. “ It’s best if you get ready. Lady Elvire will be here any moment from now.” Josiane said, ushering me back in. I closed the door, changing out of the clothes I had on into a freshly washed uniform. Washing my face with water by the side, I tied my hair into a ponytail then quickly opened the door, following Josiane out of the servant quarters to the hall where we had first been addressed by madam
Taking light steps not to make any noise, walking over the supply closet, I brought my equipment for cleaning, heading to the King’s room. With one hand holding on to the cleaning supply, the other was raised up to the door, and I knocked softly, waiting to see if anyone was in.When I heard no sound, I twisted the knob, going inside the room.Be invisible.I chanted to myself before walking fully into the room and was welcomed with total darkness. Not having a clue where I was going, I used my hands to make a part for myself. Falling two to three times on the ground till I got to the window, pushing the curtains aside. The once dark room was graced with light, allowing me to get a better look at the place. The first thing I noticed was how big it was if that was the correct word to use. This was by far the biggest room I have ever seen. It was massive. To think I needed to clean every inch without missing a spot. The wall of the room was painted red, and there were two doors by the o
MICAELA The days pass by in a blur, making it one month since I was appointed as the king’s personal maid. We servants became more and more accustomed to our daily chores, repeating the same thing over and over again. Like every other day, I was on my way to the seventh floor. “You three, come with me.” Madam Despina yells, pointing at Josiane, another maid, and me. We trail behind her, walking up the stairs to the fifth floor of the Palace. “I want you three to tidy up this place and make sure every room here is sparkling clean. The king is expecting some guests in the palace; do well not to put his name in ruin, or you won’t live to regret it.” She threatens, going back downstairs. “Ugh... They don’t mind working us to death. We still have our assigned task to do. How does she expect us to meet up with our morning duties before 1 pm. for lunch?” The maid with Josiane and I mumbles out, her hand to her waist as she looks at Madam Despina's retreating form. When she realised w
The King’s eyes swam deep with anger, making it downright terrifying to look at, not with the look of irritation visible on his face, all because of me. He tilts his head to the side, watching me with a look of fury still on his face. Slowly, like a predator about to attack his prey, he started making his way toward me. With every step he took, I took a step back. Moving backwards as he came forward till my back hit the wall. He stopped right in front of me, a hand placed on the wall behind me while the other grabbed a hold of my chin, holding onto it tightly. He moved his head to the side of my neck, his lips almost brushing against my skin till it stopped at my ear, and he whispered, “Aren’t you a frightening little thing, so easy to squash. Aspice te trepidantem cum adhuc tibi nihil feci. (Look at you shaking when I haven’t done anything to you yet.)” “Oh... sorry. I mean, I’m sorry, your majesty. I had no idea. You would be back early today; I already tidied up the room, and w
I picked up my tea and bread after moving over to the servants’ quarters and sat down at the opposite end of the hall to finish my lunch. “Hey, Micaela,” “Hello,” I said, sitting between them. “Hey....” Josiane calls out, nudging my shoulder. “Why are you so pale white? One would think you just saw a ghost. “ She joked, laughing, but when she noticed my reaction, the smile was wiped from her face. “What happened? Don’t tell me you actually saw a ghost. “ She gasps out. “I wouldn’t be surprised if you did.” “Yeah, I feel like a lot of vengeful ghosts could be roaming the palace because of how unfairly they have been killed.” Godiva whispered so only the two of us could hear. Though I doubt that was necessary, given that the beasts had super hearing, allowing them to hear even the faintest whisper. “I wish I did.” I murmured, looking down at the loaf of bread in my hand. “Seriously, what happened?. You are beginning to scare me.” “Josie is right. You don’t look too good.” I
MICAELA The following day served as another reminder that I had to clean the king's chamber. My legs are nearly failing me as I ascend the stairs to the seventh floor. I hurried to the storage area and grabbed my essentials. As I closed the bedroom door and entered the room, I was stopped in my tracks by a strong voice that filled me with horror. “I see you are back.” I dropped my cleaning materials as soon as I heard the sound, recognising the king's voice. I kept my head down to avoid having any contact with him as my anxiety mounted. Here I was once more, in the room with the king. The realisation of my predicament causes my eyes to get fuzzy. I was making the same mistake again after he was kind enough to let me go yesterday. It would undoubtedly require a miracle for me to be forgiven this time. “I’m so sorry, your majesty. I thought you would have been at breakfast.” I hastily replied as I stared directly into the most alluring blue eyes I have ever seen. My pulse
I hastened to the kitchen after lunch, tying aprons behind my back. Even though my schedule changed and I won't be working here, I didn't want to arrive late this evening. I didn't want to be punished—not after yesterday's incident. One of the maids in charge of serving the food had gone to rest during the lunch hour but ended up coming late for her duties. Madam Despina had called the guards, asking them to take her to the dungeon, and they dealt with her. They lathered her body with various marks after caning her. before raping her in succession. The last thing I wanted for myself was this. Opening the kitchen door to check if I had arrived on time, i breathed a sigh of relief as I positioned myself in front of the washbasin. I ignored the chefs' shouts, concentrating on the dishes I was cleaning, until I felt my hair being pulled violently and was carried from the kitchen while the maids looked at me pityingly. I put my hands on my hair in an attempt to ease the pain my sca
I stirred awake, blinking for a second due to the sun almost blinding me as I lay on the bed looking up at the ceiling. Yesterday’s incident played on my mind. What i wanted at this point was the numbness to fill me up. A groan left my lips as I shifted on the bed, trying to ease my pain. My cheek had been bruised and hurt. The agony was excruciating as I tried to sit up, but it was better than the bruise on my chest. My body was sweating, my breath was heated, and my head hurt. It was clear that I was getting the flu. My legs buckled as I got out of bed, nearly toppling over. My cheeks began to water; yesterday served as a reminder of the past. My last punishment or beating had been a long time ago. these served as a reminder that, despite my best efforts, trying to get out of situations like these. I would still get beaten because of something that was beyond my control. The bruising on my face was visible when I approached the small mirror I had gathered from Josiane. Dry bl
"What?" I whispered very quietly after some time. It didn't help that I was caught off guard by his question. Was he finally telling me what a mate signifies to them? At the same time, I was puzzled to see the seriousness in his face. I wasn't sure what she was talking about, but I guess I was about to find out. Orpheus continued to look at me expectantly, still waiting for my answer, so I cleaned up my sweaty palm on my dress, giving him a slight nod. "I have heard the maids and Neve talk about it, but I have no clue what it means to your people," I told him. "I’m sure you don't; that's why I'm going to explain it to you," he said, exhaling. "Like you humans have your respective religions, we also serve someone we call the moon goddess, Areola. With every one of our kind being created, she had given us a mate, someone destined for each wolf, a soul mate. They are a part of us, kind of like our other half. If a mate dies leaving the other, it is worse than death, as the pain
I felt a soft caress on my cheeks, causing me to stir and pull me out of my dreamless sleep. My eyes peeled open, and I blinked a few times, trying to get accustomed to the dark room. After some time, I was able to see a little bit due to the moon shining through the opened curtain. Staring at the figure in front of me, it took some time for me to recognise who was sitting beside me. I sat up from the bed at full speed, lunging myself at him. Orpheus laughed, holding me tightly while placing soft kisses on my head and cheek. "You're back." I cried out, putting my face in his. neck. "I thought you were supposed to come back tomorrow." "It's already the next day, Micaela," he whispers. I moved away from him, and truly, it was. The sun was already rising, and the day was slowly getting warmer. "We finished off early, and since I was missing you dearly, I chose to come back early instead of staying one more day." He stood up from the tiny spot on my side, moving over to the o
Orpheus POV. "The pack that had been attacked and can't stand on their feet since their Alpha was killed and their territory taken has decided to join our packs, at least for the meantime till a place is provided for them and a new alpha will be selected." "How many casualties were lost in the fight apart from their alpha?" I asked, leaning on the counter and pouring a whisky into a glass cup. "except for the alpha and a couple of their warriors, but there was no life lost from the women and children. The men really fought hard to save their families and friends," Alpha Stefano says with pride in his eyes. "A ceremony will be held this evening to honour the dead, and they would like for you, their king, to attend. It will be a great honour to have you in their midst." "At what time will the ceremony be over?" I asked, checking the time on my watch. "The laying of the dead will be done on Friday, but there will be a party afterward to celebrate their legacy." I nodded; it
I know Orpheus says he wanted me beside him and no other woman, but was he able to keep me beside him? I still tried to make sense of his words when he said he was going to sort things out after he returned from his trip. I had no clue what it meant and could only come up with what I think he meant. I wasn't sure if he was planning on revealing our secret to the people. Alec finished his milk in no time, and I rubbed his back gently until he burped before walking up the stairs in the direction I had seen Neve come from. I was able to spot Alec in his room, taking off his clothes. I walked into the bathroom and began bathing him while playing with him. He gurgles some baby words, taking a fistful of my hair and trying to bring it to his lips. I freed it from his hold, even though it wasn't easy since he had such a strong hold on it. Bending down, I drop a kiss on him, kissing his tummy and making him shriek in joy. I guess he was ticklish. Wrapping a plush white towel around
My jaw drops to the floor when Neve pushes the door open, and I take in the extravagance of the house. Instead of the usual Palace's dark exterior, this place was filled with bright paint and furniture, each with unique patterns and textures. I hesitantly made my way inside, still in awe. Neve walks in, closing the door behind us. "Do you like it?" she asked, coming to stand beside me. "I will be nuts not to; your place is really beautiful." "Thank you," she beamed, ushering me to the living room. "I did most of the design myself." "Wow, what aren't you good at?" I gushed, causing her to laugh as she shrugged her shoulders. "Have a seat." She says, going into another room before coming back with a glass of juice and placing it in front of me. "I will be right back; I need to check on the kids. Their nanny already left," she mutters, leaving the living room this time to go upstairs. I remained seated, my eyes wandering around the room, still taking in its beauty. It wasn't
It's been three days since the king left, and I haven't quite left the seventh floor yet. I only wandered around the hallway since everything I needed was already here for me, so I didn't see the need to go downstairs. Most importantly, I wasn't in the mood for another feeble encounter with Anastasia or Saoirse, so I remained locked up in my room, spending the day bathing, eating, watching TV, and sleeping, repeating it again the next day. Just like the past two days, I was resting on the couch, watching my favourite soap opera, when I heard a knock on the door before it was pulled open and Neve stuck her head inside with a smile on her face. "Hi." "Hi." "I wanted to see if you were still breathing, seeing as you locked yourself indoors since Orpheus left," she says, walking in as she closes the door behind her. "I won't call it locking myself in; I don't have the need to go downstairs, that's all," I counter. "Ahhhh...my bad." She smirks, taking a seat beside me. "I gu
"Wait... what?" I asked, sitting up a little to stare at his face. "What do you mean you're leaving? Where are you going to, and when are you coming back?" “Relax, Ayárun, you," he says, running his hand through my hair. "What I meant to say was that I will be leaving for five days. I need to attend a treaty pact in Italy and will be back next week." "Do you have to go?" "It's important I go; if it wasn't, I wouldn't think twice about staying here with you. Snuggling together," he said, kissing me. Lifting me up so that I was straddling his hips. I released my lips from his when he started to sit up, both my arms on his shoulder blades. "When do you have to leave?" "This evening "Isn't that early?" I whined. "Can't you leave tomorrow instead?" "I can't, Micaela." He used his thumb to caress my face. "They are already expecting my arrival, and the quicker I leave, the quicker I get things done so that I can come back home to you." I pout, feeling sad that he was about
I stared at the door, expecting Orpheus to return while still sobbing my heart out. Why!? Why did I act so childish, believing Anastasia instead of trusting the king? The more I remembered his pain-stricken face, the more tears fell from my eyes; if I had the power to go back just a few hours, I wouldn't have acted the way I did. My hands clenched onto my chest, my knees raised, and my head rested on them while still staring at the door. I wasn't sure how long I sat there waiting for the king to come back; I must have fallen asleep because when I woke up, it was already bright outside, with the sun almost blinding me. I was not on the floor but instead on the bed with a duvet covering me, which meant that the king had returned back to the room, yet the side of the bed where he was supposed to sleep was empty and untouched, showing that he hadn't slept on the bed. Was he that pissed at me that he didn't want to be near me? I sighed, wiping the tears that fell from my eyes.
It was 5 p.m. in the evening, and still, there was no sight of Orpheus. It was just like the morning when I woke up to an empty bed with his side a little cold to show that he had been up for some time. I was moving around the palace since I had nothing to do, but at the same time, I was hoping to catch a glimpse of the king. I was going over to the kitchen when I bumped into a maid I was familiar with. She was one of the girls Josiane had been talking to during the night of the ball. "Hey, Micaela, it's been a while," she said, holding onto a tray with both her hands. "Hi Kelly," I greeted with a smile on my face. "I would really love to chat with you, but I need to take this to the king," she said, raising the tray up a little. She attempted to walk past me, but I stopped her by blocking her way. "Why don't I take it? You must have other things to do." I haven't seen him all day; excitement filled me up. It was like bubbles that had been building up in my stomach were now
