Taking light steps not to make any noise, walking over the supply closet, I brought my equipment for cleaning, heading to the King’s room.
With one hand holding on to the cleaning supply, the other was raised up to the door, and I knocked softly, waiting to see if anyone was in. When I heard no sound, I twisted the knob, going inside the room. Be invisible. I chanted to myself before walking fully into the room and was welcomed with total darkness. Not having a clue where I was going, I used my hands to make a part for myself. Falling two to three times on the ground till I got to the window, pushing the curtains aside. The once dark room was graced with light, allowing me to get a better look at the place. The first thing I noticed was how big it was if that was the correct word to use. This was by far the biggest room I have ever seen. It was massive. To think I needed to clean every inch without missing a spot. The wall of the room was painted red, and there were two doors by the other side of the room. One, I’m guessing, was the bathroom and the other, probably the King’s closet. I walked over to the shelves, spotting different types of books from different genres. He must love reading. Looking over to the side of the shelves and saw a different set of swords lined up against the wall, but one caught my eyes. Just by seeing it, I could tell it held more power and strength, emitting a glow anytime the sunlights on it. I sighed, ending my exploration as I half-heartedly picked up the broom and began working. There wasn’t much to tidy since the place was already clean without a spark of dirt, so I decided to give the place a good base cleaning. Dusting all the furniture, cleaning the window’s and glasses. Mopping the floor and doing the laundry. I was folding the clothes after drying them when a wave of drizzling spell hit me, making me hold on to the closest thing beside me, which was the couch. Glancing towards the wall clock, I saw it had only two hours before lunchtime and an hour before the king got back from his usual morning meetings. Thanks to the information Josiane gave me this morning. Putting my head down to my knees, I tried focusing on my breathing, waiting for the dizziness I felt to pass. A second later, I started feeling like myself again, I waited another minute before getting back to work. Folding the clothes and putting them in the closet. I closed the closet door behind me, then walked over to the window, contemplating whether to leave it open or close it back the way I saw it. Suddenly, I felt a shiver behind me, I turned back but saw no one. Choosing to leave the curtain open, I picked up my cleaning equipment, making my way to the door when I felt another shiver. This time, I was certain that someone was staring at me. I turned back yet again, not seeing anybody behind me. What was I thinking.! Of course, there was no one in the room but me. Ugh…. I should stop being paranoid. Pushing the door open, I walked out of the room, I turned to close the door behind me and could have sworn I saw red eyes staring at me. In the blink of an eye, it was gone. I was beginning to think I was seeing and hearing things. Clearly, my dizziness was affecting me in a not so positive way. Quickly closing the door and putting the cleaning supply back in the closet. I walked downstairs to the first class, going to the maid’s quarter and to my room. It was only 12:00pm, which meant one hour more until lunch. Laying down on the bed, I thought back to what happened moments ago. Was I being paranoid, or was I really being watched, I couldn’t tell. Choosing not to dwell in it anymore, I closed my eyes to rest for an hour before 1pm. When I woke up, the clock was setting at 1:15pm. Racing out of the bed, tidying up my hair. I ran out of my room to the hall, where the maids gathered. Taking a plate of bread and tea, I walked over to where Josiane sat, taking a seat beside her. “ Hey, thanks to the heavens you made it.” Josiane whispers, giving me a smile. “ Yeah, I finished early and decided to take an hour’s rest, ending up oversleeping.” “ I understand, it’s not easy working seven hours straight, I thought I was going to faint if I carried on working.” She sips her tea, nudging my shoulder. “Did you see the king when you left his chamber.” “ No, I didn’t. I thought you said the king always comes back from his morning meeting by noon.” Josiane gave me an apologetic look. “ Yeah, he usually does, but from what I heard from a friend of mine, something must have happened because the king became furious, stomping out of the meeting hall. He often goes back to his room. That was why I asked if you did see him when you were tidying up the room.” I shake my head, having a bite of my food. “ I didn’t.” “ Oh well, I guess he didn’t go back there.” She shrugs her shoulders as she carries on eating. I thought back to the feeling of someone watching me earlier but shook it off. There was no way the king would have gotten in without coming through the door. Right. An hour after we were done with our lunch, I walked into the kitchen to assist the maid working there. I was not allowed to serve the king his meal except for a beast like his kind. The human maids were only allowed to clean and tidy up the Palace while the beast maid did the cooking and serving. I spent the rest of the day helping out in the kitchen. You might be wondering why not just rest. I couldn’t, not with my thoughts going wild. We had our dinner at 8:pm before being dismissed to our room. Slipping out of my uniform, leaving only my undergarment. I quietly washed my face, then plopped down on the bed, drifting off to sleep, ending the day’s stress.MICAELA The days pass by in a blur, making it one month since I was appointed as the king’s personal maid. We servants became more and more accustomed to our daily chores, repeating the same thing over and over again. Like every other day, I was on my way to the seventh floor. “You three, come with me.” Madam Despina yells, pointing at Josiane, another maid, and me. We trail behind her, walking up the stairs to the fifth floor of the Palace. “I want you three to tidy up this place and make sure every room here is sparkling clean. The king is expecting some guests in the palace; do well not to put his name in ruin, or you won’t live to regret it.” She threatens, going back downstairs. “Ugh... They don’t mind working us to death. We still have our assigned task to do. How does she expect us to meet up with our morning duties before 1 pm. for lunch?” The maid with Josiane and I mumbles out, her hand to her waist as she looks at Madam Despina's retreating form. When she realised w
The King’s eyes swam deep with anger, making it downright terrifying to look at, not with the look of irritation visible on his face, all because of me. He tilts his head to the side, watching me with a look of fury still on his face. Slowly, like a predator about to attack his prey, he started making his way toward me. With every step he took, I took a step back. Moving backwards as he came forward till my back hit the wall. He stopped right in front of me, a hand placed on the wall behind me while the other grabbed a hold of my chin, holding onto it tightly. He moved his head to the side of my neck, his lips almost brushing against my skin till it stopped at my ear, and he whispered, “Aren’t you a frightening little thing, so easy to squash. Aspice te trepidantem cum adhuc tibi nihil feci. (Look at you shaking when I haven’t done anything to you yet.)” “Oh... sorry. I mean, I’m sorry, your majesty. I had no idea. You would be back early today; I already tidied up the room, and w
I picked up my tea and bread after moving over to the servants’ quarters and sat down at the opposite end of the hall to finish my lunch. “Hey, Micaela,” “Hello,” I said, sitting between them. “Hey....” Josiane calls out, nudging my shoulder. “Why are you so pale white? One would think you just saw a ghost. “ She joked, laughing, but when she noticed my reaction, the smile was wiped from her face. “What happened? Don’t tell me you actually saw a ghost. “ She gasps out. “I wouldn’t be surprised if you did.” “Yeah, I feel like a lot of vengeful ghosts could be roaming the palace because of how unfairly they have been killed.” Godiva whispered so only the two of us could hear. Though I doubt that was necessary, given that the beasts had super hearing, allowing them to hear even the faintest whisper. “I wish I did.” I murmured, looking down at the loaf of bread in my hand. “Seriously, what happened?. You are beginning to scare me.” “Josie is right. You don’t look too good.” I
MICAELA The following day served as another reminder that I had to clean the king's chamber. My legs are nearly failing me as I ascend the stairs to the seventh floor. I hurried to the storage area and grabbed my essentials. As I closed the bedroom door and entered the room, I was stopped in my tracks by a strong voice that filled me with horror. “I see you are back.” I dropped my cleaning materials as soon as I heard the sound, recognising the king's voice. I kept my head down to avoid having any contact with him as my anxiety mounted. Here I was once more, in the room with the king. The realisation of my predicament causes my eyes to get fuzzy. I was making the same mistake again after he was kind enough to let me go yesterday. It would undoubtedly require a miracle for me to be forgiven this time. “I’m so sorry, your majesty. I thought you would have been at breakfast.” I hastily replied as I stared directly into the most alluring blue eyes I have ever seen. My pulse
I hastened to the kitchen after lunch, tying aprons behind my back. Even though my schedule changed and I won't be working here, I didn't want to arrive late this evening. I didn't want to be punished—not after yesterday's incident. One of the maids in charge of serving the food had gone to rest during the lunch hour but ended up coming late for her duties. Madam Despina had called the guards, asking them to take her to the dungeon, and they dealt with her. They lathered her body with various marks after caning her. before raping her in succession. The last thing I wanted for myself was this. Opening the kitchen door to check if I had arrived on time, i breathed a sigh of relief as I positioned myself in front of the washbasin. I ignored the chefs' shouts, concentrating on the dishes I was cleaning, until I felt my hair being pulled violently and was carried from the kitchen while the maids looked at me pityingly. I put my hands on my hair in an attempt to ease the pain my sca
I stirred awake, blinking for a second due to the sun almost blinding me as I lay on the bed looking up at the ceiling. Yesterday’s incident played on my mind. What i wanted at this point was the numbness to fill me up. A groan left my lips as I shifted on the bed, trying to ease my pain. My cheek had been bruised and hurt. The agony was excruciating as I tried to sit up, but it was better than the bruise on my chest. My body was sweating, my breath was heated, and my head hurt. It was clear that I was getting the flu. My legs buckled as I got out of bed, nearly toppling over. My cheeks began to water; yesterday served as a reminder of the past. My last punishment or beating had been a long time ago. these served as a reminder that, despite my best efforts, trying to get out of situations like these. I would still get beaten because of something that was beyond my control. The bruising on my face was visible when I approached the small mirror I had gathered from Josiane. Dry bl
MICAELA With my heart pounding, I turned around once I was positive he had left the room. I continued with my work, ignoring the closet door opening as I faced away from the king. After doing my chores for an hour and a half, I was about to finish when I turned around and encountered a hard chest. As the scent of lavender and wood filled my nostrils, I moaned and rubbed my forehead with my hands. I looked down, finding the floor fascinating. “You’ve been avoiding me. Why?” His deep, raspy voice asked, closing the little gap between us, making it difficult for me to think as his sweet smell engulfed me. “I’m not avoiding you, your majesty,” I reply, with my head still cast down. “Really, then why won’t you look at me?” I said nothing, biting softly on my lips and just regretting it when I felt a sting, causing me to wince. “Lift your head up.” He commands softly. I shook my head, keeping my head down and refusing to look up at him. “I said to raise your head up.” This time,
ORPHEUS I got up from my throne, walking out of the room with Loukas beside me. “Your mother has requested to talk to you.” “Tell her I’m busy.” I muttered to him, walking over to the elevator. “You need to see her, Orpheus; she has been sending in a request to have an audience with you.” Loukas continues. And I sigh, glancing at him. “You are well aware of the reason for the unending request. Right now, I am not in the mood to sit through a long list of potential females to be mated to.” I tell him, getting into the elevator and pressing the seventh button. “You know she is just worried about you. It’s been years, and you still haven’t found your mate.” Loukas stated. “She scared you might end up alone, not having pups of your own and building your own family.” I rolled my eyes and kept my hands folded against my chest. I had long given up on finding a mate; it’s been years since my first mating ritual. The mating ritual was when the younger wolves, who recently turned
"What do you want for dinner?" The king asked, glancing behind me.I shrugged my shoulders, having no clue what to say. It’s still amazing how he goes back to acting like nothing happened a moment ago and like he didn’t just say those words to me.The thought of it still sends a wave of shivers down my spine. I could still feel the butterflies flutter underneath my stomach, and here he was acting with such indifference."What about we go for something simple?" The king said again, his back turned towards me. "Since you don’t have any food you wish to eat, I will make some seafood.""Okay." I said I was uninterested. The king turned back to look at me for a second, his eyes quipping up, and I blushed, breaking the eye contact first. He walked over to the fridge, taking out some ingredients and putting them on the counter before taking out the pot and pan.He pushed a small plastic cup with a lid on and an inscription in the body that said ice cream, giving me a tiny spoon. "You can sna
Orpheus POV."The matters had been handled." Loukas said as we concluded our discussion.I nodded, flipping the page of the document in my hand as I read through it."With that said and done, let's move on to the next matter.""What matters?" I asked, pretending not to know.Loukas sighed, rubbing his hands over his face as he got up from his seat on the couch to sit in a chair opposite me. "You have been trying to avoid this. You know you can’t, right?""I have no idea what you are talking about.""Really, man." He says, frustrated. "I thought things were going great from what you told me, so I don’t understand why you won’t tell her. Are you scared she might not feel the same and want to break the bond?"I shrugged, pretending to read the file in my hands. He has been pestering me for weeks now, ever since I talked about introducing Micaela to Sliver."You are really not going to tell her." He asked again."I think it’s best for the both of us." I tell him plainly, keeping my voice
“Rest, and I will have a meal brought up to you.”“Why, where are you going?” I asked, stopping him in his tracks.“I’m going for a run.” He replied, his hand on the doorknob. “It has been a while since I last ran, and my wolf is restless.”“Can I come?"He looked taken aback by my question; even I was taken aback. Deep down, I knew I had always been curious what his wolf looked like.I have seen the guards change, and I tell you, I almost pissed my pants, but somehow, I knew this would be different. I watched as the king tilted his head, probably thinking about my question.“You don’t have to if you don’t want to.” I hurriedly said, I don’t want to force him to do anything he doesn’t want to do.“Go get your jacket; it's cold outside.” He stated, and I squealed, rising from the bed. I ran back to my room, taking out a jacket Elijah had gotten for me before running back out.The king was waiting for me in the hallway, and when he saw the jacket on me, a big grim graced his face.“What
It was the sensation of a hand stroking my face that woke me. As soon as I smelt the king's familiar scent, I suppressed a smile. My eyes remain closed while I act as though I'm still asleep, holding my breath to avoid making noise, and savouring the sensation of his hands on my skin. His breath brushed my neck and his chest pressed against my back as I felt the bed dip. "I know you are awake." I remained silent and kept my eyes closed, still acting like I was asleep. "There is no use pretending to be asleep; I can hear your breath, even though you tried to hold it." He stroked my hair as he teasingly says.. I opened my eyes, turning to look at him. I had a sheepish smile on my face when I saw the smirk on his. “I was wondering where you were since you were supposed to help me tidy up the library. Was surprised to find you still sleeping. It looked like you needed it, and besides, you were too cute for me to wake up." I blushed at his words, giving a little apologetic smile fo
Orpheus POV. Infuriated, I wanted to punch something, or, more importantly, someone. How could he think to take Micaela out without my consent? How could he buy her fancy foods and clothes when he knew very well who she belonged to? My fists were clenched, and my eyes were blazing. She had his scent all over her, and I wanted to tear off the repulsive jacket she was wearing when I saw them enter together. It was a good thing he left when he did. I knew for a fact that he was playing with me, trying to rile me up. That was the kind of person Elijah was, also good at pranking and playing silly games. When she stepped out of the car, I could still picture the smile on her face and the look in her eyes, and all I wanted to do was punish her for being so amiable with him. "Why do you seem like you are out for blood?" Loukas questioned, taking a seat opposite me. "Because I am." I answered sternly. "What's going on? You have been in a bad mood all day." I didn’t get the chance to
I took a look around the hall and noticed the maids and guards looking at us with disbelief. Some had a look of disgust while others were stunned. "Are you busy?" Elijah’s question had me turning back to gaze at him. "I was on my way to the maids' lounge for lunch before going back to my tasks." "Great, you are not busy." He took hold of my hand, ignoring everything I said, and dragged me to the elevator. "You are coming with me." "Where are we going, sir?" I asked. "I was thinking of going into town to get a few things. It's a good thing I ran into you, because I didn’t want to go alone." "I can’t leave; I have other chores to get to. The king would be angry if I left the palace without his permission." "Don’t worry about Orpheus; I know how to handle him." He said it in a cheery voice. "You can’t tell me you aren’t excited about the thought of stepping out of the palace and seeing the outside world. Since you are a palace maid, I doubt you have ever been outside." He smiled a
It's been two weeks since King Orpheus and I shared a kiss and two weeks since I last saw him. He has been busy; there seems to be some kind of problem, seeing as the guards were on edge. After the night of the kiss, I had asked Godiva and Josiane about the marks on my shoulder, and they both screamed, asking how I got them. I giggle, recalling our conversation. "How the fucking hell did you get this?" Josiane yells while Godiva has her mouth opened wide, staring down at the side of my neck. "No cussing, Josiane." I reprimanded. "Well, I’m sorry, not sorry." She exclaimed. "There's no way I could finish that sentence without letting out a cuss word, Mica." She stated in a matter-of-fact tone. "You have a freaky hickey on your neck, a freaky hickey. Look at poor Godiva; she is too stunned to say anything." She points to Godiva, whose eyes haven’t shifted from my neck. "Is it a bad thing?" I asked, worried about the marks on my neck. "Is it a bad thing?" Josiane repeated before l
King Orpheus took a seat beside me, taking a bite of his own food as we both ate in comfortable silence. I finished my food, taking another sip of my hot chocolate, like the king called it. My mind wanders off to Godiva and Josie, and I giggle at the thought of their reactions when I do tell them about the meal and the drink. “What are you thinking about?” The king asked, and I clapped my hand to my mouth, realising what I had done. “It's nothing, your majesty.” I say, casting my gaze down from his piercing eyes. I thought he was going to keep asking questions until he got what he wanted, but instead he changed the subject. “You have a little bit of chocolate here.” He says, pointing to the left side of his cheek. I stuck my tongue out to see if I could lick it off my face before using my hand to wipe my cheek. The king laughed, shaking his head. “Let me get it for you.” I didn’t have time to protest when he cupped my cheek and used his thumb to wipe off the spot. A shiver rus
"Wait, what?. You are actually telling the truth, right?" Josiane gave me a dubious look, and I nodded. "I can’t believe the king would do that to you." Godiva said, perplexed, "I wish I were there; I would have banged his head against the wall and hit him where the sun doesn’t shine." "You know you won’t." Josiane counters. "Besides, he would send you flying with just the tip of his finger." "You're right, but at least I would have done something." She counters back. "Sure...." Josiane responded in a sing-song manner, not believing a word she was saying, and I laughed. "I hope you are okay," Godiva said. "I think I will be; I don't really know how I’m going to face him tomorrow." "Do you want me to switch choices with you?" Josiane offered. "I don’t really mind." I shake my head, declining her offer. "Thanks, but I think it’s just going to make him pissed at me even more." It was silent for a while; the girls both had their thinking faces on before Godiva blurted out a quest
