EVELYN

A week.

There was a week for me to decide my fate.

Mine and Cole’s.

Or a week to find a way out of this place and save my mate, the Alpha King suspended in a deep slumber that could span for the rest of his life, ending only from his death.

But how?

How could I save him? How could I save us? This situation felt impossible and the overwhelming pain of it all threatened to cave my chest in.

How could I do this?

I had no clue. I supposed the only solution was to kill Jack Elrod, but how would I be able to do that? He was stronger, and faster, not to mention possessed powers that I still didn’t understand. He was able to freeze people, and communicate without words… what else was he capable of?

Thinking of how difficult everything was, how impossible and how seemingly hopeless my existence felt, I clenched my fists and winced in frustration.

Emma suddenly protested with a small yelp, pulling me back to reality.

“Evelyn, you’re holding my hand too tightly,” she remarked, her big haz

EVELYNI remained quiet, guilt filling my entire body with every passing second. I hadn’t meant to blurt everything out, hadn’t meant to speak to him so harshly on the day of our reunion. I didn’t mean to hurt my father’s feelings, but his stubbornness and unwillingness to even try to make our situation better made me release all the grievances I’d held in for years.Mother brought Emma close to her and stepped away from us. My little sister seemed confused about what was happening, not that I could blame her. This sort of moment should have been saved for a more private time, but it was too late now. I had laid down all of my problems and complaints. It was up to him to navigate the situation.“You’re right, Evelyn,” he admitted with a sigh, running a hand through his gray-streaked hair. “You’re right about everything. I made a mistake and it’s my fault that our family is in this situation. It’s all my fault.”He wiped his face and closed his eyes, and I felt a pang of sadness in my

EVELYN“What deal?” I asked, my brows furrowing as I stared at my father in surprise. I wasn’t certain what he meant but the mere notion that he’d struck a deal with Jack Elrod was concerning to say the least, especially given this new revelation about Cole’s mother and her identity as a human wizard. .What had been arranged? Father hesitated for a moment and glanced away, breaking our eye contact. He ran his hand through his silvering hair and then released a heavy sigh, his eyes weary as they met mine again.“Jack wanted House Caddel to show our absolute loyalty to him,” he explained, his hand rubbing the back of his neck as he spoke.I blinked in response, trying to understand what such a thing could mean.“Absolutely loyalty,” I repeat back to him. “What does that mean, Father?”Father gazed out past the terrace, his eyes absently searching for anything, likely some sort of point to focus on rather than me.“The closeness between you and Cole was a threat to him,” he continued a

EVELYNFather looked at me with a look of resignation and sighed. He ran his hand through his hair and his mouth tensed as he studied me.“I know you’re unstoppable,” he began reluctantly, his tone gentle in the way that only a parent’s could be toward their child. “But I want you to be extra careful, Eva. Jack Elrod is a dangerous person.”“I’m not afraid of him,” I assured him, only a half-truth given Jack’s capabilities. If he was able to suspend Cole in some sort of sleep, enchant people into doing his bidding without so much as uttering a word and turning ordinary people into killing machines… there was no telling what else he could do. Father was right to warn me to be careful, but I knew that when it came to Cole and his safety, there was nothing I wouldn’t do.“I know, Eva,” Father sighed. “I know you’re not. You’re every inch your brother’s sister. More strong than I ever could have imagined you’d be.”He took a step closer, his expression softening as he placed his hand on m

EVELYNI jumped, startled, and closed the book at once. I was immediately glad that I had locked the door and stashed the book under my pillow before crossing the room.“Who is it?” I asked, trying to hide any alarm in my voice.“It’s Crystal, my Lady. May I enter?”A small sense of relief ran through me, thrilled that it wasn’t Jack.“Enter,” I said once I unlocked the door and stepped away. The door opened and to my surprise, she wasn’t alone. The red-haired girl was followed by a few men who carried two large wooden chests.“Place them on the floor,” Crystal ordered firmly but not impolitely. The men did as instructed and then retreated.“What are these?” I asked as my eyes trailed over the chests.“They’re presents from the Master,” she answered. As she opened them, I saw loads of dresses and fancy jewelry. I studied them closely and found some were very familiar.I frowned as I realized that they were replicas of some of my old dresses which were either confiscated or burnt after

JASMINE“What are you thinking, Jasmine?” Addison demanded, her temper flaring as she burst into my room. Her gray eyes flashed and I nearly winced as she approached. “Are you out of your mind? Don’t you know how dangerous this is going to be?”I took a small, centering breath and stepped aside from my half-packed bag, eyes fixing on my twin. It had been a long time since I’d seen Addison so angry like this. “I know you’re mad, Addison, but this is the best solution,” I replied evenly, subduing my worry in favor of assuring her. “We needed to craft a plan and this was the only way it was going to work-”“This isn’t the best solution,” my sister fired back, shaking her head. “The best we thing can do is wait to get a clear understanding of the situation. House Madden should be the one to rush to the front. It would do our family no good.”“What do you mean?” I asked as my brows furrowed.“I don’t know how much clearer I can be,” Addison replied sharply, her arms crossing against her c

JASMINEI half-expected Addison to snarl at him given her mood and our conversation, but instead, she just glared at Flynn before pushing past him, leaving us alone in awkward silence. Eventually, Flynn cleared his throat and walked in.“Are you alright?” the Beta asked, his voice calm but containing just a bit of reluctance and worry.“I’m fine,” I assured him, brushing my hair out of my face. “It was nothing, just… an argument between twins. The worst kind. I’m sorry for the way she pushed past you like that.”I forced a smile even though I was a little mortified. I didn’t know how long Flynn had been outside the door but I hoped that he hadn’t heard our conversation. Miscommunication happened often between my sister and me but it was embarrassing to think that he heard us arguing. Not to mention what Addison said about my feelings toward him. If the Beta had overheard her words… our friendship would surely be over. And that was the worst thought of all.“Um, was there something yo

EVELYNI was a little taken aback, not expecting the question at all, especially not from Aiden. Regardless of how everything had happened between Cole and I, my friend was still the King’s Guard, his sworn hand. Talking to him about such intimate matters, especially considering that not long ago, he’d offered to help me escape the palace… it felt strange and heavy.Still, I couldn’t keep him waiting.Right?I wondered if perhaps this wasn’t a real question but when I looked back at Aiden, I found that his face was surprisingly serious. His expression was solemn, his dark blue eyes searching for an answer. My cheeks suddenly grew hot as I wrestled with my thoughts, unsure of how to answer my friend when things were still so chaotic and strange between the King and me.“I… I suppose so,” I replied finally, knowing that there was no use in denying it. “I know it’s stupid, but I do love him, Aiden.”“There’s nothing stupid about that,” Aiden said, shaking his head. “That being said… peop

EVELYNThe next morning, I woke up early and immediately decided that I needed to talk with the scarred man.I’d had a bad dream about Aiden, and while I couldn’t remember all of the details when I awoke, I had a terrible feeling in my belly, one that told me I needed to get to the bottom of what was going on with my friend. Something was amiss and I couldn’t let it continue without question. I wanted to figure out what he had talked about with Aiden the day before and why Aiden suddenly healed so fast.Physically, something was amiss. Even Cole, easily the strongest wolf in the kingdom, couldn’t have recovered from such intense injuries that quickly. He healed at a more rapid pace due to his power, but he couldn’t have done so as fast as Aiden had. What had happened to him?And was he okay? That was the thing that mattered the most to me. I needed to know that my friend was okay in a place full of such terrible, wicked people. The thought of losing him somehow to the scarred man or J

EVELYNMelanie was startled at the sight of us. She stumbled back the moment her wide blue eyes locked onto mine, panic flashing across her delicate features. As she retreated, something she had been clutching tightly against her chest slipped from her grasp. She scrambled to pick it up.It took me a moment to recognize what she was holding—fine jewels, far too exquisite for a mere maid of a high lady like her. The glimmering facets and rich colors of the precious gems sparkled under the dim light.A long pearl necklace snapped from her hurried movements, scattering the pearls across the ground. The small spheres bounced and rolled in all directions.“Skyla’s maid?” Leila whispered cautiously, barely audible. “What is she doing here? And those…where did she get them?” She turned to me.My gaze swept back to Melanie. I hadn’t noticed when she disappeared in the chaos, but she must have seized the opportunity to escape and hide here. After all, no one had paid much attention to a fright

EVELYNI ran as fast as I could through the alleys. Aiden and Oakley were ahead of me—Aiden carrying Cole on his back, while Oakley guided us.It had been a while since we’d escaped the fray, but we still didn’t dare slow down. My heart hammered wildly in my chest. It wasn’t just from the speed. It was a mix of shock and fear.I was certain Sylvia had just mind-controlled me, though I had no idea how. My arms shot out subconsciously to grab the others, pulling them along to run with me without making much sound. My legs moved on their own, weaving swiftly through the soldiers as if someone else had taken control of them. We maneuvered through the post while the soldiers were overwhelmed by Sylvia’s magic and Augus was still laughing at her incompetence, our eyes squeezed shut against the burning sensation on our bodies. Fortunately, for werewolves, we didn’t need much vision to navigate. We could rely on our keen sense of smell. And so, we succeeded. The winding alleys felt like a maz

EVELYNThe beautiful blue light from the sapphires surrounded us like a divine aura. My breath caught, and my eyes widened in a mix of fear and awe.As the sapphires hung suspended in the air, Sylvia let out a roar. The sound reverberated through the sky like thunder, and an unseen wave of power erupted from her.The soldiers were immediately thrown to the ground. They writhed as if scorched, and the wave continued to pulse, spreading its force.Jack knelt, digging his claws into the earth to steady himself, but he faltered, his body tumbling. Pain twisted his face, and he gritted his teeth. I almost felt sympathy for him, but that sentiment was fleeting. I couldn’t feel sorry for Jack Elrod—not now, not ever. For a split second, I thought I saw Cole stir, but when I glanced at him, his eyes were still shut, and his face was devoid of any expression. Before I could think further, the sapphire suddenly dropped to the ground with a sharp clink.Sylvia coughed, a stream of blood spilling

EVELYNI saw Aiden dash through like lightning, cutting down the soldiers who were trapping Leila. With a swift, brutal motion, he tore through the soldier who had been tightening the rope around Leila’s neck, severing his thumb in the process.Something tightened in my throat. I had never seen Aiden like this. His dark blue eyes, nearly black in the night’s shadows, carried an intensity I found unfamiliar, and his face was streaked with a fierceness that seemed out of place. When the soldiers reorganized, trying to corner him, Oakley sprinted over, kicking them away. Aiden gave him a brief nod of before he moved toward Leila, scooping her into his arms. His face softened as his eyes met mine“Aiden,” I said, my voice stiffer than I intended. My gaze shifted to Leila, who let out a faint gasp. She curled tightly in Aiden’s hold, her eyes shut as she struggled to breathe. Blood seeped from her right shoulder, and I realized she’d been pierced.Aiden gently lowered her to the ground.“E

EVELYNAugus seemed rather surprised by Jack’s unmoved demeanor. His green eyes scanned him intently, as though searching for a flicker of doubt or deceit. When he apparently found none, he shrugged with indifference. “That would be for the best.”Jack gave a curt nod and turned to the soldiers behind him. With a wave of his hand, he issued a clear order: “Seize them. Alive.”Without sparing Stephanie so much as a glance—as though her outburst had never happened—Jack strode away to join Augus. Together, they stood watching as the soldiers swarmed toward us, their expressions coldly detached. Augus, in particular, seemed to savor the unfolding chaos, as though it were nothing more than a game of siege.Stephanie looked utterly lost, her chestnut-brown eyes widening in disbelief before becoming vacant. The crumpled paper slipped from her hand and fluttered to the ground.“Why…” she murmured. “He’s not him…He’s not my brother…”I grabbed her arm and pulled her back as the soldiers advan

EVELYNA chill crept down my spine as I locked eyes with Augus. Rationally, I knew better than to believe him. Everyone in Hescor knew magic was vile, filthy, despicable—banned in every form. How could we possibly be born with magic blood?Yet my gaze lingered on the sapphire dagger in his hand, now glistening faintly after absorbing Skyla’s blood. Deep down, my intuition whispered that Augus’s words might hold a grain of truth.Stephanie’s fists clenched, her voice rising with fury. “How dare you! You’re defiling the name of werewolves with your lies!”“Defiling?” Augus let out a booming laugh. “You should acquaint yourself with true history, Miss Elrod. Like your brother has.”My eyes flicked to Jack. His expression was grim, impassive—yet unsettlingly unsurprised.Stephanie turned toward him, her lips trembling as she struggled to contain her emotions. She failed. “Is that what you believe? Is that what you want? To let this outsider trample on our land, to tarnish our country?”Ja

EVELYNSkyla didn’t let out a single cry before the blade pierced her chest. The bashful smile she’d worn just seconds ago froze on her face. Her bluish-green eyes widened ever so slightly in shock at the sudden action.Augus slowly withdraw the blue blade, and Skyla’s body crumpled to the ground with a hollow thud. Blood poured from her wound, spreading like a dark, gruesome carpet beneath her.Melanie, standing just behind Skyla, stumbled back with a shrill. Piercing scream cut through the air like a thunderclap. It was a sound of pure, unfiltered anguish.Marcel Fox stood paralyzed, his face drained of color. He stared in mute horror at his daughter’s lifeless form. His trembling lips parted as though to speak, but no words came.I felt as though the world had stopped. My body locked in place, my breath caught in my throat. The crowd around me stood in stunned silence, the weight of the moment pressing down on us like an invisible hand. Even Jack’s hand on my arm tightened briefly,

EVELYNLeila's eyes widened as realization crashed over her. Her gaze locked onto the man posing as Seb, filled with panic. It was rare to see Leila—so confident and expressive—reduced to fear. I couldn’t blame her. Though I managed to keep my composure, a chill crawled down my spine, threatening to weaken my knees. None of us could have foreseen this situation.Except, perhaps, my intuition, though it hadn’t helped me in the end. I couldn’t shake the thought of what might have happened if I had listened to it earlier. But even with hindsight, I wasn’t sure what we could have done differently.Father had once taught Conner and me that to defeat an enemy, you must know them as well as you know yourself. Yet here, I felt I didn’t know either well enough.“Augus should’ve just arrived at Windsburn, shouldn’t he?” Leila whispered, leaning toward me with disbelief.I pursed my lips, keeping my gaze on Augus, as I forced my voice to remain steady. “I’m afraid it must be a smokescreen to dis

EVELYNThe street stretched out before us, unnervingly still. The stalls stood closed, their wooden boxes covered with heavy canvas. No guards patrolled the quiet alleys, and no pedestrians passed within sight as we crept along the corner. Our eyes scanned the empty expanse before we cautiously moved forward.Jasmine led the way, her hand resting on the hilt of the dagger at her hip. Her footfalls were nearly soundless as she glided through the shadows. She would lead us out before returning to help Stephanie and Seb in their rescue mission. Behind her, I carried Cole’s weight, struggling to move quietly. Though I could mostly manage, it was only with Leila’s help that I was able to keep pace without falling behind.“We’re lucky,” Leila whispered, her voice barely audible. “Everyone’s distracted, over by the execution ground. It’s so clear here. The plan’s going well.”I wanted to believe her, but an unsettling feeling crawled at the edges of my mind. The silence was too complete. The
