The cells were buzzing with noise. The banging of the iron gates echoed in the halls, mixing with the sounds of animalistic growls. The only other time I had seen the cells so chaotic was when they had thrown the remnants of my pack down here after the raid.

"What's going on?!" I asked, the alarm clear in my voice as I pushed myself to my feet.

Gwen didn't answer right away, her eyes darting back and forth. She pushed herself past me to the edge of our cell, peering down the hallway to get a better look at the commotion.

"It's cleaning day."

I jumped slightly at Mary's voice, still not used to hearing her speak. Mary was a small girl who usually kept to herself. Gwen had mentioned that she was from her pack, but besides that I didn't know much about her. She was in the same cell as Gwen and I, as well as an older women who didn't speak the best English.

"What do you mean?"

Mary frowned, wrapping her arms around her frail figure as she still remained on the floor unmoving. "They do it whenever they raid a new pack. They need to make room for new people in the cells. So they, well, clean up."

"Clean up? What the hell does that mean?" I asked, the panic rising in my chest. I turned my attention back to Gwen who had redirected her attention back to the pair of us. "Gwen, is that true?"

She hesitated a second before nodding her head. "I didn't think they would do it so soon. But your pack had a lot of a survivors." She whispered, nibbling on the finger pad of her thumb. "Just c'mon," She grabbed my upper arm, steering us to the back corner of our cell where we usually slept. "It's best to just stay in the back of the cells and not provoke them."

I followed Gwen's directions, standing next to her in the shadow of the wall. I shifted my weight, ignoring the ache of my muscles, sore from disuse. "How do they pick who to...clean up?" I swallowed the lump in my throat as I spoke.

I had a sick feeling that 'cleaning up' had a different meaning than offering them a nice shower and fresh pair of trousers.

"Depends," She whispered, shrugging her shoulders. "They usually round up the injured ones first. Throw in the troublemakers they don't like. If they still need more people, well...just don't provoke them, alright? They may come into the cells and poke around. Keep your head down and we should be fine."

I don't trust my voice to speak. I settled on nodding my head slowly, clenching and unclenching my fists to release some anxious energy. I couldn't help but notice the look of worry that crossed Gwen's face. I knew why too – I wasn't an asset to them.

They cataloged what we had to 'offer' – as they worded it – when we came in the cells. Your rankings, your skills, your previous job...they knew it all. They were more likely to keep a skilled fighter or a previous pack doctor than some scrawny twenty-year old who can barely shift.

I was just collateral damage.

♕♕♕♕♕♕♕♕♕♕♕♕♕

"They should be done soon." Mary whispered from somewhere to my left, risking a glance down the hallway to see how many wolves had been dragged out of their cells.

From the sound of the screams and growls, I wouldn't be surprised if she told me they had cleared out half the cells. Some people put up a fight, trying to resist the guards. Some pleaded and cried to be spared. The few rare ones just let it happen. Maybe if you're here long enough, getting chosen for cleaning day is almost like a saving grace.

An end to a chapter you never wanted to start in the first place.

I closed my eyes, trying to calm my erratic breaths. "I'm scared...I'm really scared."

"It's okay, we all are." Gwen whispered from next to me.

I rapidly shook my head in response, "I have a bad feeling."

Gwen didn't say anything from next to me. Mary didn't either. They didn't have to, though. There wasn't much that could be said. Only so many words can be used to comfort you in such a unique situation. I won't be calm until the doors of the cell building swing shut and lock. But the likeliness of that happening was slim.

I had a sinking feeling in my tummy. It was the same gutwrenching feeling I had when the pack alarms went off the day of the attack. I just know this isn't going to end well.

♕♕♕♕♕♕♕♕♕♕♕♕♕

"How many more do we need?"

"A few, not too many." Their voices were close to our cell, the sound of their boots hitting the floor echoing off the walls. "Chet already rounded up the injured or sick ones. The shit-stirrers are gone as well – thank god we got rid of some of them."

"We lost a lot of fighters, though."

The second voice snorted, "Those ones were never going to fight our battles. They would have always given us trouble. It's good that we got to clean them up earlier than later." He spoke carelessly about getting rid of the wolves, obviously used to the routine of cleaning day. "We should probably get rid of some of the useless ones. No more males, we lost too many."

My heart was pounding in my chest.

My back was pressed against the wall with my arms glued to my sides. I kept my eyes casted downward, staring at the cracks on the floor. Gwen and Mary flanked my sides in similar positions. The fourth she-wolf in our cell was sitting on the floor. She was too weak to stand for so long.

I tried to think of the stories Gwen and I had shared just the night prior to calm my nerves. I recalled her telling me about her falling out of a tree and crying, despite her father telling her not to climb while he wasn't there. She wanted to impress him and prove that she didn't need his help.

The sinking feeling in my gut was still there.

The door to our cell swung open with a loud creak. I wanted to jump in fright, but I resisted the urge. I balled my fist in anticipation, the jagged edges of my nails biting into the flesh of my palm. I could feel their heated gaze as they looked us over. Their presence was overwhelming, and our fate was in their hands.

"Get up."

There was no response.

"I said get up. Do you not fucking hear?"

I dared a glance to my left to see the fourth woman of our cell struggling to stand. I don't know how long she had been here, but she was surely in the worst condition of all us. She was an older woman with battle wounds – both physically and emotionally.

The original one who spoke gave her a once over before nodding his head approvingly. He moved so fast I didn't have time to process what he was doing. One moment he was standing a few feet in front of her, the next he was nearly inches away from her with one elongated claw coming from his hand. He quickly flicked his wrist and broke the skin across her cheek.

She flinched at the impact, going to grab her cheek automatically. She didn't cry though – almost as if she expected it.

Was this something they did when they chose you for cleaning?! Cut you? Mark you?

"Take her away for cleaning." He murmured to the wolf next to him, automatically turning her gaze on the rest of us.

I tried my best to wipe the expression of complete horror from my face as quick as possible, but I wasn't successful. Gwen and Mary were careful to never raise their heads in the first place, but I wasn't as smart. Almost automatically, his eyes narrowed in on me.

His lips curled up into a sneer – a taunting smile if anything. "Oh, don't look so scared, pup. I thought women liked when men helped around the house and cleaned." He threw his head back and laughed at his own joke, taking humor in the whole situation.

He took a few calculated steps closer to me, his head tilting to the side as he examined me like a slab of meat. "You're a fresh face." He commented, taking another step closer. Without thinking about it, I stumbled away from him into the wall.

He arched an eyebrow as I scrambled away from him, his face erupting into a full-blown smile. "Tsk, tsk...that's not very nice of you. You're too pretty to be rotting down here in the cells." He eerily commented, bringing a hand up to drag his clawed finger down the side of my face. "Best get you upstairs and cleaned off."

I didn't register the pain at first when he flicked his wrist and broke the skin of my lower cheek. The sheer shock and panic were taking over my whole body. I heard Gwen's gasp of shock first and before I realized, there was a stream of tears mixing with blood down my face.

"No, no, no, no, no, please, no!" The words escaped my lips in a fleeting attempt to barter with the guard, but my fate had already been decided. The mark was already on my skin.

I screamed as another guard game in and pulled me from the wall. I tried to grab onto Gwen, but they were too quick.

I thrashed in their grip, begging for them to let me go.

Crying. Pleading. Begging.

The doors to the cellhouse swung behind me as they dragged me up the stairs. Cleaning day was done.

I like the manner in which the paragraph interfaces. It is early days but I am impressed.

The sun from outside was blinding. I blinked a few times to adjust my sight, but my eyes kept watering up with tears. I had stopped screaming after one of the guards had hit me. My face was numb from the claw mark and slap I had just earned myself – there was no point in adding more fire to the already lit flame.I shuffled in a single file line behind the woman who I had shared a cell with only a few minutes ago. I was at the end of what seemed like a never-ending line of wolves."Keep walking, don't slow down!" The main guard growled from the front of the line, his voice echoing off the forest trees that surrounded us.They were marching us to our deaths, what great hospitality this pack has truly shown us!There had to be at least fifty of us being led by the group of guards. They told us to be quiet and follow them, or else. I don't necessarily know what the 'or else' could be, considering where we were heading. My thoughts were riddled with anxiety. My first mistake was ever trying to outrun and escape the Imperious pack. My second mistake was looking up and making eye contact with him. My eyes snapped up to find his as soon as the shock wore off from his words. Mine. His. That's what he said – that's what he declared. That I was his. Alpha Benji was nothing like the hideous man I had drawn up to appear in my nightmares. He was tall and broad, with sandy hair and hauntingly grey eyes. His chiseled face was framed by just the perfect amount of facial hair. And he was, without a doubt, my mate. The suffocating scent of fresh firewood and leather practically oozed from his pores. "Mine!" He growled again, repeating himself as if to reassure not only himself but the others around him of what he said. I didn't dare to speak. My body was paralyzed from the sheer shock of the situation, working in overdrive to compensate. He remained only a couple feet in front of me. His posture was stiff - his shoulders tense and his hands curle

I jolted awake. Initially, I hoped for a fleeting moment that the events of yesterday were all a dream. Or more accurately, a nightmare. But, of course, they weren't. I pulled myself upright from the floor, letting the blanket drape over my lower half. I had slept surprisingly well on the hardwood floor, already accustom to sleeping on uncomfortable surfaces. I spared a glance at the door. My heartbeat sped up, immediately noticing my dinner tray missing from where I had left it last night.Someone had come in here while I was sleeping.A quick scan over my body confirmed that nothing noticeable had changed during my slumber. There wasn't any new scratches or marks on my body that I didn't already have. It must have just been a member of the staff doing their job, but yet it still left an unsettling feeling in my tummy.I don't know what to do. I am trapped in a locked room with no way out and no way to entertain myself. I sat with my back pressed against the wall for most of t

I stumbled over my footing, managing with some luck to remain upright. The door behind me swung shut with a thud of finality. As soon as the door was closed, my senses were overwhelmed. His scent was everywhere. Burnt firewood and fresh leather. His presence was strong enough that I could sense him without looking up. My breathing was shaky and uneven, catching in my throat in anticipation. I went through the calming motion of clenching and unclenching my fists. It was a habit I picked up as a child to help deal with my trauma. After I lost both my parents, I felt like I was spiraling. But the motion, while small, helped ground me and bring me back to reality. "Ah, hello, glad you could make it." A humored voice spoke up amongst the silence.I swam through my memories to help put a face to the vaguely familiar voice. I remembered the voice from Cleaning Day. He had calmed down the Alpha and broke up the earlier altercation. He must be the Beta Belinda was referring to earlier. B

For the next week, my life followed the same mundane routine.Wakeup. Stare at the wall. Eat breakfast. Stare at the wall. Pace around the room. Eat dinner. Stare at the wall. Go to bed. Repeat. It was a form of torture to be in this room. Maybe that was my mate's plan this whole time? Drive me mad before rejecting me? Anything is plausible at this point.I curled my fingernails into the baseboard of the wall, scratching a pattern into the weathered wood. The bed in my room has remained unused, instead opting to sleeping on the floor. It started out as fear, not wanting to ruin the sheets when I was dirty. But, by now, it's just what I'm more accustom to.Plus, I feel guilty knowing that somewhere underground Gwen is still sleeping in a moldy, concrete cell eating soggy bread. I can't bare to snuggle up in a bed thinking of her conditions. There's no clock in the room but if I must guess it's some wee hour into the night. I never had a regular sleeping schedule to begin with, but

♕ The Imperious Pack ♕I was sitting on my bed, braiding the loose threads from the throw blanket to keep myself busy. No matter how hard I tried, sleep wouldn't find me last night. I was once again a ball full of neurotic energy that couldn't be calmed down.I woke up early this morning before Belinda had even come to drop off my breakfast. The door was still locked, so I couldn't freshen up but I opted to change out of my sleepwear to get a head start to my day.I didn't wait much longer until I heard the familiar three knocks, signaling her arrival. Belinda came into frame, her salt and pepper hair pulled away from her aging face. Unlike most days, she didn't have a tray in her hands."You're up early." She noted, an eyebrow quirking upwards. "Would you like to go for a walk?"My lips parted in surprise at her question. I hadn't been allowed to leave the room all week except for using the bathroom. I didn't know what randomly made them want to let me have some freedom, but I wasn't

♕ Dotty ♕I'm not sure what I realistically was expecting when I walked through those doors.Maybe Alpha Benji would be waiting for me with a pitchfork, ready to run me out of the pack after rejecting me. Perhaps he would be sitting at the table, devouring a breakfast of raw meat from his enemies – which, to be fair, is a rumor that they whisper down in the cells. What I wasn't expecting, however, was to walk into a small room where three wolves already sat around a dining table, peacefully chatting like any normal morning."Ah, finally, you came. I'm starving and he's making us wait until we all got here to start." Alaric noticed me first, jabbing his fork toward Benji to signal who he was talking about.I followed his line of direction, making eye contact with the Alpha. His words sobered me up, erasing whatever tension that remained in the room. He gestured his hand out towards the set of plush chairs tucked in the corner of his office. I apprehensively took a seat on the chair closest to the door, tucking my feet underneath me as I settled in the chair.Benji lowered himself in the chair adjacent from me, linking his hands together and leaning his elbows on his knees to stare at me. He didn't waste any time beating around the bush – he was direct as he got straight to the point of the conversation."Belinda is moving your belongings from the guest pack house. You will no longer be staying there."I tried my best not to react to his words. I mean, I wasn't that surprised. Afterall, I knew my situation was just too good to be true. Why would he keep me locked up in his guest pack house when it should be occupied by real guests? I was just a stranger in this pack."And where will I be staying, then?" Benji flanked my side the entire way to the pack house. He slowed his strides, trailing closely next to me as we abandoned the silent sanctuary we inhabited to enter the main portion of the pack. I had gotten used to the heated stares, quick but curious, whenever I walked in the pack with one of their superiors. The stares were always worse with Benji, but he paid no mind. All he had to do was send one lazy sideway glance to a peeping pack member, and they would all scatter in fear. He was quick to leave me, mumbling something about having to get this conversation over with. His hands skimmed along the length of my arm for a fleeting moment as a goodbye, before turning on his heel to leave me with two wolves following my shadow. I stood in front of the familiar door he had left me at, knowing I was in good company, even if it wasn't him. I didn't bother to knock, retching the door open. Gwen didn't seem that surprised, not having many people to expect as a visitor. Her lips curled

I stare at him for a moment, gulping. Was he being serious? He wants me to attack him? I had asked for basic self defense skills, not to become a sparring warrior. Even if Dotty had trained me well, which she hadn't, I still wouldn't pose an ounce of a threat to Benji, of all people. "I, uh, um – I think Dotty may have exaggerated just a bit, about my..."His sudden laugh interrupts me, catching me off guard. Benji's nonchalant expression morphs to one of mildamusement, eyeing me. He interjects, "Stop, relax. I'm just joking." I furrow my eyebrows, clearly not getting his sense of humor. He continues, "Dotty told me your training sessions haven't been that fruitful. I was just joking.""Joking, huh...that's a new one." I take a deep breath to laugh off my previous indication, taking advantage of his good mood to tease him. "Yeah? Want to hear another joke?" Benji scoffs, gesturing to the floor. "Fifty push-ups. Now." "Oh, stop being such a grouch.""Now." Something is telli

I'm not sure exactly what I'm expecting when I open the door. But, one thing I definitely wasn't expecting, was a shirtless Benji to be greeting me. Standing in the middle of the entryway leaning against the back of the couch is Benji, shirtless in all his glory. He's clad in only black athletic shorts hanging almost dangerously too low on his hips and a pair of running sneakers. His head is downturned, distracted by whatever message he's furiously responding to on his phone. Always busy with pack business. He types away for a few moments before carelessly tossing his phone to the couch, looking up to finally acknowledge my presence. "Is that what you're wearing?"The heat that spreads quickly throughout my cheeks is humiliating at his simple comment. I shift the weight on my feet, glancing down at the simple outfit I had worn to the daycare. It was almost identical to every outfit I wore, yet he never complained before."You want me to change for dinner?" I ask incredulously,

♕ Aria ♕ "Well, well...look who we have here. I was starting to think one of the pups scared you away." Elise smiles from her spot in the center of the daycare. The echoing noise of the door gave my arrival away, announcing to not only Elise, but Noah, that I was back. With Dotty's 'training', it had pulled me away from the daycare center. While I had missed Elise's warm energy and the constant changing day with the pups, I welcomed the break. Ever since my unsettling encounter with Noah, I had been finding it harder to shake my unresolved nerves. I thought Dotty teaching me how to defend myself would help, but that didn't work out as well as I had planned. "And let them win? Never." I smile. Elise was quickly distracted by the arrival of the pups, deserting me with a simple wave. Noah stood rooted in his spot, leaning against the wall with a box full of crafts in his hands. He was dressed more professionally today, wearing slacks and a button down. From the corner of my eye,

( THIRD P.O.V ) Benji didn't like her spending so much time with his sister. It irked him more then he would care to admit. Was he jealous of her? It was a foreign concept to him, to be envious of his childish sister. But, a nasty territorial side of him surely was. He would rather it be him with her. Training her. Teaching her. But he couldn't. He didn't trust himself around her like that, in his wolf form. It had been getting harder to reason with his wolf as the promise of a threat grew by each day. They were both desperate to protect her, but had different ideas on how to. Where as Benji would prefer to keep her locked away in a guarded home, his wolf was needy to claim her. To warn people in his path that she was his, and anyone that hurt her would face the consequences. He was fighting an uphill battle with himself, and the growing threat wasn't helping. Devin Berkshire was just the beginning of a rebellion Benji was interested in humoring. There had been talk of escaped r

The gravel path turned to worn down grass as we got further and further away from Benji's property. The first thing I noticed was the noise - grunts, growls, and a chorus of commands. My strides stalled for a moment as Dotty continued to tug us towards the commotion. "Dotty..." I warned, eyeing her carefully. "I'm not sure I like whatever you have in mind for inspiration. Maybe we should just go back to you beating me up in Benji's backyard." "I do not beat you up!" She looked mildly offended, rolling her eyes. "And besides, we're already almost here. It'll be fun." A thunderous growl followed her words, echoing off the forest walls. Where I saw it as a warning sign, it only fueled Dotty's eagerness to stride forward. Dotty immediately noticed my hesitation, my heels digging into the earth, kicking up dirt in our path. "Don't worry. It's just the warriors." Dotty quickly explained, pulling on our arms again. "They're training today. I thought you might like to watch." This c

══════════════════ The morning air was sharp against my cheeks as I pushed open the back door. Like I expected, Dotty sat perched in the backyard, sitting criss-cross on the grass floor. She perked up as I got closer, turning to smile at me, waving enthusiastically. "Aria! Nine a.m sharp, wow. I would say I'm impressed by how prompt you are, but that seems pretty fitting for you." Her gaze flickered to the now shut back door before bouncing back to my approaching figure. "Is Alpha Dumbass coming out to say hello?" I cringed at her comment, knowing fully-well that she was still in ear shoot of Benji who had only left a few minutes before me. "I thought you said you weren't mad at him anymore." I shook my head slightly, offering her hand to help her up. A few days had passed since the breakfast incident, yet Dotty's anger still lingered. She promised me she would let it go, but it didn't seem that likely with her constant need to jab at him for it any chance she got. It was situati

♛ THIRD PERSON P.O.V ♛ The night before... The mildew scent clings to the cell walls, making the air thick and hard to swallow. There are so many different scents lingering underground: unfamiliar wolves, sweat, piss, and blood. So much blood. The iron aroma is so potent - so raw - that it makes the pack guards choke on their own saliva. They can taste it when they gulp, as if it's their own blood their smelling. But it's not their blood. It's Devin Berkshire's. A twenty-four year old wolf from the Sapphire pack. He's a prisoner who's always had a smart mouth on him, but never tested his luck. A sharp gaze that tracked your every move as he lurked in the back of his cell. He never went out of his way to make the new people feel welcomed. The room was painfully silent as my question festered in the air. For a moment, all I could hear was Benji's labored breathing as he tried, and failed, to control his reaction. A snarl ripped through his chest, breaking the noise. "That's enough." He snapped, standing up from his seat so suddenly it screeched against the floor. "We're leaving." I hesitated, frozen in my seat. I had expected him to get mad, sure, but I didn't expect this level. When I didn't get up right away, he pulled on the back of my chair, startling me.
