I watched Travis for about a week and during that time I found out everything I could about Samantha Cartwright. He hadn’t made his move yet although I saw that he started being nice to her friend, Jennifer.
Samantha walked to and from school every day and they lived in the lower class area of Newport. She always had a book with her and she was one of the top academic students of the school. She never wore revealing clothes and opted for jeans, sneakers and hoodies in the winter and jeans and modest tops in the summer.
She didn’t partake in sports although she did go for long walks, sometimes only returning after dark. Her parents didn’t seem to be in the picture and she lived with her older sister who was rarely home, which meant she was basically by herself.
“What’s going on with you?” Damon asked me one night after dinner.
“Just school stuff,” I said.
Damon had brought me into his office because my father really knew me too well. He was an expert in reading people but with the familial link we shared, I was an easier target than other people.
“Talk to me, maybe I can help you hash it out,” he suggested.
“You know about our history with the preps,” I said to him.
“His dad’s an even bigger asshole,” Damon said.
“Yeah well, Travis has these parties and there are rumours, nice girls go to them and then they become not so nice, they become Travis groupies,” I said to him.
“Okay,” Damon said. I knew he was waiting for the punch line from me.
“He’s recently set his sights on another girl,” I said and looked at him.
“Do you like this girl?” he asked me.
“I don’t know her. I just know I can’t let him ruin her,” I said to him.
“Griff, there’s only three people that know the true extent of the Oracle’s prediction for you. If you feel you need to intervene without revealing our existence, I’m behind you all the way,” he said.
“I just don’t really know what to do,” I admitted to him.
“You’re going to have to go deep on this one,” he said.
“What do you mean?” I asked him frowning.
“You obviously want him to know that he can’t have her, that it’s you doing this to him,” he said and I smiled.
“Obviously. I hate his guts,” I said as he chuckled.
“Do what feels right,” he said and stood up from behind his desk.
“That’s it?” I asked him.
“You’ll know what to do Griff. You’re not an idiot, you’re a good kid actually aside from this whole persona at school that you’ve adopted and I understand why. I’m not going to tell you what to do, figure it out, do what you have to do without losing your soul,” he said.
“You do realize she’s human right,” I said.
“So’s your mother,” he said and I smiled.
“That’s not what I meant, she’s your bonded half,” I said.
“You’ll figure it out,” he said.
His phone rang and that meant our conversation was over. I thought back to my tenth birthday when the Oracle appeared again. She had already told my parents that I would either be a destroyer or a guardian when I was around one, but her prediction on my tenth year blew me out of the water.
I’d never meet my true bonded half. She existed but I would just never find her and she warned me to be careful with my feelings because one day I’d have to choose my mate. Nobody else knew this except me, Damon and Finley.
That part sucked but she gave me a glimmer of hope, saying that if I chose the right one, she would be faithful, honorable and she’d love me completely. Our bond would be unbreakable and just as strong as fated bond halves. That just meant that I’d have to choose the right one.
Kane didn’t talk a lot, but when he did, he didn’t shut up. He was cocky and somewhat rude but I loved him like I loved myself. Kane’s my jaguar and literally my other half and on a good day he’d laze around and flick his tail as he watched me.
“Kane!” I said loudly in my head for the third time.
“What?” he asked me with a lazy flick of his tail.
“Any thoughts on what to do?” I asked him.
“Aren’t you always telling me you’re the brains and I’m just the muscle?” he asked me.
“Don’t be like that,” I said to him.
“Like what?” he asked me.
“You know what, never mind, go lick yourself or something,” I said as he chuckled and turned his back on me.
On my sixteenth birthday when I shifted for the first time, I held Kane in awe, he was powerful, sleek and then he told me I was a loser, laughed and shut me out for three days. He liked pissing me off for some reason and during one ceremony when we went on a hunt, I had to beg him to shift as the whole clowder watched me. He thought it was really funny but when it came to training or fighting, he’s never let me down and I knew he never would in a life or death situation but until then he was going to give me shit all the time.
The following day started out just like any other except that Travis Scott and his preps were walking towards us and not looking where they were going. The hallways were filled with students and as Travis neared us I stepped into his path and hit him with my shoulder.
“Watch where you’re going, idiot,” he said without looking up.
I pushed him against the lockers and his eyes widened slightly as he looked at me. He was a head shorter than me and I had a lot more bulk. I looked him in the eye as the halls went silent and everybody watched us.
“I think you need a lesson in manners Morris,” I said as I tightened my hold on him slightly.
“Why don’t you go back to the trailer park,” he hissed at me.
“I’m going to enjoy taking what you want,” I said to him and let him go.
“What the hell does that mean?” he asked me as I walked away flanked by Mac and Jett.
“Don’t get comfortable, Morris,” I said as the whispers started.
“I’m untouchable, Woods!” he yelled after me.
“Idiot has a point,” Mac said as we headed to the cafeteria.
“I’m going to piss him off in another way,” I said.
“Yeah you already said you’re going to take what’s his, and all I can think about it is his football crown,” Jett said as I gave him a rare smile.
“Don’t be an idiot,” I said to Jett as Mac laughed.
“Oh! You’re going after the girl!” he said as Mac lifted his hand to smack him again. “Don’t you dare!”
“Go sit at our table, I’ll be there in a bit,” I said.
I watched Mac and Jett as they took their normal spots at our table and I headed over to where Samantha and Jennifer were already seated. A few students had noticed that I wasn’t going to my usual table. Samantha and Jennifer hadn’t noticed yet and they were talking to each other with their heads bent as I sat down opposite them.
“Oh shit,” Jennifer whispered as her face paled and Samantha looked up.
“I’m sorry,” Samantha said and looked down.
“Sorry for what?” I asked her folding my arms on the table.
“Whatever it is we did, please don’t kill us,” she said as she looked up and I could see the visible fear in her eyes.
“You’ll have to make it up to me in another way then,” I said as her friend glanced at her.
“I don’t even know what I did,” she said.
“Just shut up and do whatever he says before he kills you,” Jennifer hissed at her and I almost laughed.
“From now on you sit at my table, every day, you wait for me after each class and no more walking to school or walking home,” I said to her as I shifted in my seat.
“Why?” she asked me.
“Because you’re my girlfriend now,” I said and I saw her gulp.
“I am?” she asked me.
“Yes, don’t make me come look for you,” I said and stood up.
“Holy shit Sam, what did you do?” Jennifer asked her as I walked away to my table.
Mac and Jett were trying very hard to hold in their laughter as I sat down and once I did their shoulders started to shake and I shook my head as I glared at them.
“From now on you’re my girlfriend,” Mac said as Jett started to laugh and lowered his head to his arms on the table.
“Piss off, what else was I supposed to do?” I asked.
“I don’t know, maybe try being friends, but now the mighty Griffin Woods jumps right into it. I’m surprised you haven’t moved in and put a ring on her finger,” Jett said.
“Don’t be stupid, we’re still underage,” I said as Mac laughed.
“Griff finally has a girlfriend,” Jett mused as I glared at him.
“This is like one of those arranged marriages,” Mac said.
“Piss off both of you,” I said and stood up when the bell rang.
They both kept mumbling retorts as I followed Samantha down the hallway to her locker and then to her class which made me late for mine, not that the teacher said anything. This was the easiest way to keep an eye on her and her friend, not that Mac or Jett saw it that way.
After school I waited in the parking lot but Samantha never showed and her friend, Jennifer, hurried to her car when she saw us waiting. Mac and Jett laughed as I cursed and climbed into my truck. I pulled my phone out and called Samantha’s number.
“Hello?” she answered questioningly.
“Where are you?” I asked her.
“I’m at home…” she said quickly realizing who was on the other end.
“Did I or did I not tell you to wait for me?” I asked her angrily as Mac and Jett raised their eyebrows at me.
“I wasn’t feeling well, I left early,” she said and then the call was disconnected.
“You won’t be telling her what to do,” Mac said as he laughed.
“Yes I will,” I said.
I dropped Mac and Jett at the packhouse and left without going inside. They both looked at me questioningly as I reversed the truck and drove down the tree lined lane back through the woods. I wondered briefly how long it would take before my phone started ringing. I knocked on the front door for a second time when I heard soft footsteps coming from the staircase and falter in front of the door, like they were waiting for me to knock again. “I know you’re standing right in front of the door Samantha,” I said and I could hear her intake of breath. She wasn’t expecting that one and this time I did smile. “What are you doing here?” she asked through the door. “It’s cold out here, come on, open the door,” I said to her. She unlocked it and slowly opened the door just slightly so she could look at me. She looked pale and sweaty at the same time like she had a fever and I just looked at her bundled up figure as I put my hand against the door and started to push it inwards. “Are you goi
‘Not going to school today’ – Samantha. I saw the text as I headed out of my room with my backpack and found Mac and Jett already stuffing their faces. I didn’t have much of an appetite and they both noticed as I pushed the half full plate away after taking a few bites. “What’s up with you?” Mac asked me. “Samantha,” I said and they both looked at me. “Bare your heart brother, I’ll be your Dr. Phil,” Jett said as I glared at him. “I went back to her house last night,” I said as Jett interrupted me. “Ah true to your rep brother, you move quickly,” he said suggestively as I smiled and shook my head. “Don’t be an idiot, Jett,” Mac said to him. “Anyway, she has no heating in the house or food,” I said and Mac stopped eating. “What?” he asked me as he looked at his plate. “That’s not right,” Jett said. “I thought she lived with her sister?” Mac asked. “Yeah but her scent’s very faint, she hasn’t been there in at least a month,” I said to him. “Is Samantha going to school today?
“Honey, I’m home!” Jett yelled as he opened the front door. “Oh shit sorry, is she still asleep?” “She’s in the kitchen douchebag,” Mac yelled back as Jett laughed. I heard some muttering and low curses and fifteen minutes later Jett joined us in the kitchen just as we started dishing up. Samantha hadn’t said anything else but she was sitting at the small table just looking at us. “We’re making you some soup as well,” I said as I handed her a plate which she took with shaky hands. “Why?” she asked me. “Again with the questions?” I asked her as she looked down. “What he meant to say was we’re here to look after you, you’re Griff’s girl now and that means you’re part of the gang and we look after our own,” Jett said. “He didn’t mean ‘gang’ as in mobster gang,” Mac said as I closed my eyes briefly. “Are you in a gang?” she asked him. “No,” we all said in unison. “Oh,” she said. “Eat.” I looked at her until she took the first bite before continuing to eat my own food. The table
By Sunday morning Samantha wasn’t as terrified of us anymore and she had laughed a few times as well. I could tell she still felt weird about the food in her house and waiting for the other shoe to drop. I hadn’t made a move on her, nothing, not even touching. At this point I was just being her friend and making sure she was eating and looking after herself. “What time are we heading home?” Jett asked me as we finished cleaning up after lunch. “Probably just before dinner,” I said to him as I closed the last cupboard. “I gather you’ll be spending more weekends here,” he said. “Maybe, why?” I asked him. “Thought I should leave the tv behind, I gave Sam the password to our N*****x,” he said as he sat down. “Yeah, leave it,” I said to him. We headed back to the living room and stopped short as we heard Jennifer and Samantha talking in low voices, probably thinking that there was no way that we could hear them. “I don’t know Sam, I mean what does he want for all this?” Jennifer ask
We turned onto Samantha’s street and I parked the truck in front of her house. I looked at it and I just knew she wasn’t there. She was showing me that she wouldn’t just jump when I told her to jump. “Why are you leaving?” Mac asked me as I started the truck again. “She’s not here, she’s showing me she’ll do what she wants,” I said and took off in the direction of our school. We came across her five minutes later and I parked the truck right next to her and her eyes widened slightly when she saw us. Jett was hanging out of the window and she kept walking so I let the truck roll forward. “Hey Sam,” Jett said, “where are you going?” “What do you want?” she asked him. “Didn’t Griff tell you we were picking you up?” he asked her. “Yes,” she said. “Ah showing him who’s boss, I get it,” he said with a laugh. “Get in the truck Samantha,” I said through the open window. “So you can order me around some more?” she asked and I parked the truck. “Get her in the truck Jett,” I said. “N
“Hi,” Samantha said as she opened her front door and let me inside. “Hey,” I said as I shoved my hands in my jeans pockets and stood looking at her in the living room. “I never slept with Rosco,” she said suddenly and I sat down. “I didn’t think you did,” I said to her. “Then why are you mad at me?” she asked. “I’m not mad at you, I’m beyond pissed off with Rosco,” I said to her. “Okay, I just wanted to clear the air with you,” she said as she sat down opposite me. “Why?” I asked her. “I shouldn’t like you but I do. You’ve just been nice to me,” she said and couldn’t meet my eyes. “You like me?” I asked her and she gave a soft laugh. “Yes, but you also scare me,” she said and I could feel the honesty in her words. “You don’t ever have to be afraid of me,” I said to her and she looked up. “You’re scarier than Mac or Jett,” she said. “What happened with you and Rosco?” I asked her. “My parents had just left and I was alone, my sister was never here so I went to a party with
“Morning sweet cheeks,” Jett said loudly as he jumped out of the truck and opened the front door for Sam as she waited on the porch for us. “Morning,” she said as she frowned at Jett and climbed inside the truck. Things were a little awkward between us after that kiss because we’d both responded to it. If I hadn’t left last night I’m not sure what would’ve happened but I knew it was too soon. We didn’t talk on the way to school and I wasn’t sure what to say anyway. “Give us a minute,” I said as we parked in the parking lot and I turned to look at Mac and Jett. “No fornicating on school grounds,” Jett said as Mac smacked him behind his head and laughed as they climbed out. I smiled as I turned back and looked at Sam. She was looking down, toying with the fraying material of her backpack. She was nervous, I could tell and she wiped her hands on her jeans. “About last night…” I began to say as her eyes met mine. “It was a mistake right,” she said. “What? You think it was a mistake
The rest of what Damon had to tell me wasn’t good either. Almost all of the Enforcers in the clowder had been called out on assignment. Random attacks on different packs, lairs and clowders had increased. The Council had found evidence of hunters at work and the Enforcers were hunting them. “Who are you?” a man said and I turned around slowly to look at him. “Who are you?” I asked him. “This is my house so you’d better start talking before I call the cops,” he said. “I’m a friend of Sam’s,” I said to him and then stuck my hand out, “Griffin Woods.” “Friend or boyfriend?” he asked me. “Boyfriend,” I said to him. “And do you regularly spend the night with my daughter?” he asked. “I couldn’t leave her alone after last night,” I said to him. “Dad?” Samantha asked as she stood behind him. “Hey honey,” he said with a smile as he turned around and grabbed her in a hug. “What are you doing here?” she asked. “What do you mean? We live here,” he said as if they had gone away for the
“Wake up Samantha,” I said as I sat on one of the chairs that I had pulled up close to the bed.“Griffin?” she asked questioningly as she rubbed her eyes and sat up groggily, “what’s going on?”“Why did you do it?” I asked her.“Do what?”“Why did you betray me?” I asked.“I didn’t, what are you talking about?” she asked me.“You knew that attack was happening, you gave your father information about me, about my family,” I said.“Griffin….” she said.“Where is it?” I asked her.“Where’s what?” she asked me looking somewhat afraid now.“Your hunter’s mark,” I said and her eyes widened just a fraction. It was so sudden that I almost missed it.“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” she said as her eyes darted to the door.“You smell different, I didn’t want to believe it at first, but Kane was right, I can smell it now,” I said to her.She darted up from the bed and pulled the door open to find Kane standing there growling at her. I stood up as she backed away and pushed her back tow
I found Kane sitting near the jetty looking out over the lake. He seemed lost in thought and he hadn’t been in the house all day. I had brought his dinner with me because now I was worried. It wasn’t like Kane to act like this.“What’s up with you, big guy?” I asked him as I placed the container down in front of him.“Nothing,” he said and gobbled his food up.“What are you doing out here?” I asked him.“Waiting,” he said.“Waiting for what?” I asked.“Something,” he said.“I’m starting to worry about you, Kane,” I said and he looked at me.“I don’t know how to explain it. Something’s off, I don’t know what, something’s not right with Samantha,” he said.“What do you mean?”“Her scent’s different, she smells like them,” he said.“Them who?”“Hunters,” he said and looked back towards the lake.“I pulled her from a warehouse crawling with them,” I said.“No, her scent’s changed Griffin, how can you not smell it? She’s been here for a whole day and she still smells different,” he said.I
Samantha had fainted in my arms and I was now sitting on the couch watching her sleep after I had gotten us out of that building and safely through the portal. I still couldn’t believe that I was looking at her.The sun would rise soon yet I wasn’t as tired as I should be. I guess the shock of finding her was enough to keep me wide awake. She lay there peacefully while an inner turmoil waged war inside me. Kane had returned an hour ago and so far he’d only been staring at her intently.“Is this real?” Kane asked me after a moment.“I don’t know,” I said to him.She stirred slightly and I sat watching her wake up. It was like I knew every stretch of her muscles, every groan as her senses awakened, the way her eyelids flickered lightly before opening, the smile tugging on the sides of her lips.“Griff…. Griffin?” she said questioningly as she sat up blinking a few times.“All these years I thought you were dead,” I said to her.“I can’t believe you’re here,” she whispered looking at me
I kept my eyes closed for a few more seconds as my mind cleared from the fog of sleep and I swung my legs over the edge of the bed as I rubbed my face with my hands. The air was chilly but it didn’t bother me. I looked at the clock and saw that it was almost five am.I got dressed in sweatpants and a hoodie and made my way downstairs to the kitchen. I made coffee for myself and swallowed the aftertaste of scotch away. There was a dull headache thumping at the back of my head and I wondered how much I drank last night.Kane didn’t stir from his spot as I finished my coffee and slapped him on his ribs. He growled at me but said nothing, it wasn’t really unusual, he liked to ignore me. I left the front door open and started jogging to the other side of the house and into the trees.I didn’t really feel like jogging but I knew that I had to get the alcohol out of my system otherwise I’d be useless for the rest of the day and I had plenty to do. The run cleared my head and by the time I go
I don’t know how long I sat on the ground with Sierra’s body clasped against mine, willing her to live, trying to warm up her ice cold skin. Kane had left at one point and when he returned it was with Jett following him.“Griffin,” he whispered.I couldn’t look at him, I couldn’t even breathe properly. My head snapped up as Jett’s hands touched her and I wanted to rip his arms off for daring to come close to her. His hand landed on my shoulder instead but I couldn’t focus on his voice.“Shit Griff,” he said and I looked up as I saw tears in his eyes.“She’s gone,” I whispered.“I know Griff, I’m sorry brother, I’m so sorry,” he said.“Just leave me alone,” I said and lowered my head to hers again.“Griff you need to come home, bring her home so we can lay her to rest properly,” he said. He reached out for her again and I pulled her back against me.“Don’t touch her,” I said and he stood up and took a step backwards with his hands in the air.I stood up with his help and kept her close
I woke up on the floor of my bedroom, alone. It was dark and quiet and I groaned as I rolled onto my back. Sierra’s scent was fading and the choking feeling of pain gripped me again. She had left me, she had really left me. How had I missed our wedding? She would never forgive me or take me back now, all this for my revenge. It could’ve waited, I could’ve killed them later, after the wedding but like every other time in my life, that bloodlust took over and I just had to kill them.“Kane,” I murmured.“I’m here,” he said sounding dejected.“She left,” I said.We could both feel her pain, it would continue until I accepted her rejection. She was heartbroken and it was killing me slowly. Chester’s words were also still with me, Samantha’s abortion, locked in a cage for three years. She had wanted to tell me everything.I had killed her out of rage when she was forced to betray me. I didn’t want to believe him but I did. She had betrayed me but not that first time, only after being subje
“How did you figure it out?” Chester asked me.He was strapped to the stainless steel table and he knew that death would come for him soon, he just didn’t realize what I was going to do to him before he died.“Someone sent me a text, telling me where to find that original agreement that you kept in your safe,” I said to him.“Who?” he asked me.“I don’t know Chester, I don’t really care, once I had that agreement, the rest was fairly easy,” I told him.“It would’ve gone the same way, your father just beat you to it,” he said.“That was the biggest mistake of your life, you should’ve known I’d come after you for this,” I said.“That’s why I had Rosco, he was supposed to shoot you in the head,” he said.“Why do you want me dead so badly?” I asked him.“It all started with that hunter treaty, I gave them information and they took out my enemies too, you messed all that up,” he said to me.“How? You won that case, you got the treaty,” I said to him.“Samantha Cartwright, her father was li
I took a knife from the block in the kitchen and walked slowly upstairs and stopped at the first guest room. Kevin and Phil were sharing the double bed with a pillow placed between them. Phil was snoring and they were both lying on their backs.I walked right up to Kevin, one floorboard creaking but they didn’t even move in their sleep. I watched him for a few minutes as he lay there peacefully, not knowing that they willingly came with me to their deaths.I slit his throat quietly and had my over his mouth and nose to minimize the noises he’d make as he struggled for air. He never even opened his eyes, the cut had severed the arteries and not just nicked them.I removed my hand when I heard his heart stop and I stuck the knife deep into his chest, leaving it there. Kane was already on the bed when I closed the door behind me and took a shower to wash the blood off. Some of it had sprayed onto my face and my hand was covered as well.I slept peacefully that night and I was awake but s
“Kane,” I spoke in his mind the moment I ported back into the house, “computer room.”“Is that an order, Alpha?” he asked me and yawned.“Trust me, you want in on this,” I said to him.Kane didn’t answer me but I knew he’d meet me. He was loyal when it mattered and only gave me shit about things that didn’t matter. When it came down to it, Kane always had my back and I wanted him with me when I did this.“I’m here, what’s the emergency,” he asked me.“The Council has asked for our protection and we’re going to take them to a safe location,” I said to him.“You woke me up for babysitting duty?” he growled at me.“We’re babysitting the men responsible for Damon’s death,” I said to him.“What the fuck Griffin…. oh, I get it,” he said as realization dawned on him.“I’m not an idiot, Kane,” I said to him.“Debatable, how did you manage this one?” he asked me.“Seems Grant was murdered in his office and now they’re running scared,” I said.“And who killed Grant?” he asked me flicking his ta
