Chapter 24

April was diligently performing her morning chores, her tasks having doubled since the other slaves left. As she scrubbed the hallway floors, she accidentally spilled a bucket of water. The water splashed onto Leona, who was walking by.

Leona, known for her cruelty and disdain for anything unclean, stopped in her tracks. Her eyes blazed with fury. "You clumsy little wretch!" she screamed, her voice echoing through the hallway.

"I'm so sorry, ma'am. It was an accident," April stammered, trying to clean up the mess.

Leona's face twisted with anger. "An accident? I'll show you an accident!" She slapped April hard across the face, the sound ringing out sharply. "You think you can just spill water on me and get away with it?"

April reeled from the blow, her cheek stinging. Before she could recover, Leona slapped her again, and again, until April was on the floor, her vision blurred with tears.

"Get up!" Leona commanded. "You're going to clean every inch of this hallway with your bare hands
