Damon's POV
“Told ya!” I gloated at Dathan as we renetered the Wolf's forge, a part of the palace designated for sword fighting. “The poor thing is so very lifeless,” Dathan said, his head bowed low. “You show too much concern. She literally just spoke to you!” I replied to him. “You need to see how she swiveled and crashed after mom hit her.” Dathan added, his voice was rising, which meant he was getting angry. I chuckled and pulled my sword out of its sheath where it hung on a rack. “You should learn to never get too close to these girls.” “Why? Because mom said so?” Dathan asked, glaring at me. “Uhm. Yeah.” I replied, and smiled very exaggeratedly. “That's not reason enough. Half the time, she's wrong bout stuff and so are you.” He replied, looking away. “You'll learn.” I said, concluding our discussion. “And what if I don't?” Dathan asked. “Would you kill me like you killed Maya?” “I'm gonna overlook the fact that you just made the most stupid of accusations.” I replied to him. “Worse than what you said is that you think I'd have anything to do with these lowlife girls.” I added. “That's the thing, I don't ‘think’, I KNOW!” My younger brother replied, slamming his fist into the manikins that hung from the roof. “And what exactly do you know?” I asked, looking at him. “I know that you liked Maya, even though she was older than you. I know you told mom about it, and she let you have her behind everyone. You'd sneak out of our room every night, at exactly two am. You'd put a hand over my face to make sure I was asleep, and sneak out!” He kept talking. “Shut up!!” I screamed him down. “Shut your mouth.” Dathan had begun to say too damn much. “Is that too much for you to hear? What you yourself did?” He asked, smiling and rubbing it in. “It's not. It's just untrue.” I replied to him, and turned my back, signifying the end of the conversation. “You can't even face me.” Dathan laughed. “I wonder how you look at yourself. I'd wake up depressed every morning.” “Mind what you say.” I warned him before exiting the forge. Silly boy! “Damon!” My mother summoned me right outside the forge. It was prohibited for women to be seen in there, and so it kinda became our sacred male sanctuary, even though my mom broke the rules a few times, cause she's a female Alpha. “Yes mother.” I answered, and tucked my hand behind me. “I was in the forge with Dathan.” “I know that.” She replied, icyly. “Have you seen Vynara?” “Yes.” I replied, against my better reasoning. “Uhm, no. I haven't. Who is she?” I asked her. I couldn't let her know that I was downstairs. “The new maid.” She replied. “The one you kept company while I was away.” “I'm sorry, mother.” I replied. The game was up. “I do not appreciate you seeing my guests before me.” My mother roared. She was just like a coconut. Tough and woody on the outside, but sweet and flavourful within. “It will never happen again.” I assured her, apologetically. “I promise.” “I know that.” She replied with the same tone. “That's why you're going to be in charge of the servants quarters for tonight.” “I haven't my wolf yet, mother!” I screamed. “I know.” She said, smiling. “That's why you're to be there.” At age twenty-two, I was years overdue for my first shift which was supposed to be my coronation as Alpha. My father, Damon III passed only two full moons after Dathan was born, leaving my mother to groom us into leaders. “I'm sorry mother.” I apologised profusely, “I can accept anything, literally anything, but that.” The servants quarters is literally what it's named. But it's also a house to men and women who spend their lives tending to the menial jobs in the palace. It was a team of about three hundred men, women and children. Almost often that not, a rebellion was cooking. They were fond of planning and staging attacks on the palace in a bid to usurp the throne. Rumor had it some of them posed Alpha blood, but came in as slaves, and were forced to remain one. “Maybe this fear will excite your wolf, and make it want to hasten up. Your father was a strong man, a resilient, ferocious wolf! You shall not be a weakling!” She commanded strongly and turned her back. End of the conversation. It was still about eight hours to midnight, eight hours to gather my strength and courage. We had guards for the jobs my mom made Dathan and I do when we erred, but no one was gonna teach her how to raise her sons, and she made that clear to everyone. Guarding the servants quarters meant no one was escaping, the men and women all slept in their different rooms, as the palace could no longer accommodate babies of the servants. And that they rose as early as the moon set to begin their day. I swallowed hard, and went up two floors to my room. Being an Alpha was no child's play. Being an alpha with a delayed wolf was even worse. I shed hot scalding tears, praying to my dead father to watch over me. It could very easily be the night I die. “I'm sorry.” Dathan said as he entered the room. “I didn't mean to put you in trouble.” For someone who was just two years younger than I am, Dathan looked a lot less daring than I was when I was his age. At twenty, he still did not know much about how many things ran in the Pack Palace. “It's alright.” I said, brushing him off. We fought often, but I never wanted to give him the impression that I was weak. I'm his big, bad, scary elder brother, and I always wanted him to think of me as that, so no one dared mess with him.. “I'm also sorry about…” He started. Dathan really had no heart for confrontations. “Maya was my fault.” I cut in. “I loved her. We started to see during the day, mom once caught us and punished the hell out of us. After doing that five times to no success, she finally turned a blind eye. Until Maya got pregnant.” Words began to taste bitter to me. So bitter I didn't want to say anything anymore. “What happened?” My overly curious younger brother asked. “She got pregnant.” I replied. “That's a good thing, yeah?” Dathan asked, smiling unsure. “Not if you're way past the age for a first shift and still haven't experienced one. Worse still if you're supposed to be the Alpha of a pack that controls the oil sector of this economy.” I smiled sadly. “What then happened?” Dathan asked. “I think I should sleep.” I replied to him. “I've got a busy night tonight.”Emily's POV “Follow Nala.” The female Alpha, wife to Alpha Damon III said, after addressing me for what seemed like an eternity. I'd read about her so much and studied the history of the Damon palace so badly, I feel I knew it even more than their children. “Thank you, Alpha.” I bowed and turned to take my leave. “I'm Luna.” She corrected me. “Thank you, Luna.” I corrected myself. We were taught back at the orphanage school that she was a nice person, but just an hour in her company, and I felt so less of a human than anyone has ever made me feel. “Take her away, Nala.” She said to the middle aged lady she'd summoned earlier, from what assumed to be the palace kitchen. “One more thing!” She said, and Nala and I stopped in our tracks. “Yes, Luna.” Nala said, turning right back to face her, and then bowed her head. The dexterity is nothing short of wealth and accumulation of experience. I did the exact same and almost sprained my ankle. “You're to serve under Nala.
Damon's POV “Are you awake?” Dathan and I shared a room, even though there were hundreds of them in the palace. “Yes.” He replied in the darkness. “I can't imagine mom is making you do this. She likes you too much to send you down there.” “She's also a little too disciplined. Even for her own good.” I replied to him. “That's too true.” Dathan said. “You know, I once told Adrian that I wished she would just remarry, maybe have a life with someone else, other than just the two of us.” “Why would you say such a thing?” I asked him. “Well, Adrian's mom is married. And she's slept with almost every respectable man, father inclusive.” Dathan had no filters, and said things as they came “That's enough!” I said. “Mom would do what is best for herself.” “But she's too busy organising and arranging things sometimes, she forgets she is human and needs love too.” Dathan replied to me, headstrong. “Well, she's half wolf.” I chirped, strapped my sword on, and put out my b
Emily's POV “Leave us!” Luna commanded, as soon as I opened my eyes. “We'll be back in a minute.” A kind nurse said, as she touched my forehead. The white room, with white gleaming ceiling sharply contrasted Luna's black clothes. A sharp pain severed through my head, as I was greeted by the heavy lights. “How are you now?” Luna asked me.I wasn't used to such care. “Better.” I replied to her. “What day is it?” “You lie!” She said, putting a hand on my forehead. “Rest, you don't have to sit up.” She said, discouraging me from getting up like I'd started to do. I heard a sound, not from either of us, so I sat up curious to see where it was coming from. “The nurse says you shouldn't. You have wires connected in and out.” With her long nails, she made a display that showed how messy I looked. “What happened?” I asked her. “That's the same question I was about to ask you.” She said, looking straight into my eyes. “I can't remember much.” I croaked. “Well,
Damon's POV “It worked!” My mom squealed in delight as soon as I opened my eyes. My head hurt so bad, and so did my body. It felt like I was in boiling water. The last time I opened my eyes, it was to a team of doctors and nurses, this time, it was just the nurses. More strange is the fact that I wasn't stretched out on a bed like I was before, I was in a pool of water. “What is going on, Mother?” I croaked. “You're alive.” She said, her eyes glistening with tears. “You made it, my love.” She added. Everyone else was crying, but they didn't look as happy as she did. “Why is everyone crying?” I asked her again. “You have to rest, Damon.” My mother replied, hushing me. “You do not have the strength for this.” “I feel better.” I replied to her. “Stronger too.” Even though my voice which was coarse and rough didn't back my narrative, I really did feel better. “That's great.” Mother said. “We'll have you transferred upstairs as soon as the doctor confirms you are s
Damon's POV “Please, please just wake up.” I begged her, even though I knew she couldn't hear me. “I need you to pull through. I don't even know you. You aren't permitted to save my life at the expense of yours.” I said. I carried her in my hand and ran upstairs to our room. On my way up, I brushed past my mother unapologetically. “Damon!” She screamed after me, and for the first time in a while, she ran. My mother ran up after me, prompting me to quicken my pace. We soon arrived on the fourth floor, where Dathan and I shared a bedroom. I opened the door as fast as I could, and locked it behind me. “Damon!” Dathan screamed and rushed to meet me. It looked like the sun had begun to set, from the warm and dim sunlight that filtered in. “Who is this?” He asked me. “Vynara.” I replied to him. “Emily?” He asked for confirmation. “Yes.” I replied to him. “What happened?” Dathan asked me. His eyes darted frantically between Emily and me. “What happened, Damon?”
Emily's POV “Water.” I croaked, even before opening my eyes. “Did you hear that?” One hushed voice said. I heard footsteps running to the bed I was stretched out on. It didn't feel like the hospital bed, in the ward part of the palace. It felt big, plush, and spacious. “Emily?” Two worried voices, with creased faces bent over me. “Yes.” I croaked. Damon looked like he'd aged ten years faster. “Get her some water please.” He tapped Dathan, who ran along. “How do you feel?” Damon asked me as soon as Dathan left us both to ourselves. “Dead.” I answered, choking. “That's fair.” Damon sighed, looking away. “Why did you do what you did?” “Because I wanted to?” I replied lamely. My head hurt so bad, it felt extra heavy to hold up. “You don't get to do that.” Damon said to me, his face morphed from concern to unexpression. “I don't get you.” I answered, straightening up. “I don't need saving!” Damon yelled, and punched the table beside me. Coincidental
Emily's POV “Damon, son of the pack, do you vow to stand beside her in the hunt and in the stillness, in the light of the moon and the darkness of the forest, in wolf, and in man form?” An older man asked Damon. “I do.” Damon replied. “With my heart, my strength and my loyalty, I am hers.” Silence! “Emily, daughter of the pack, do you vow to stand beside him through the turning seasons, to share in his triumphs and bear his burdens as though they were your own?” He asked me next, and like clock work, the crowd turned to face me. “I do.” I replied, like I had rehearsed. “With my soul, my spirit, and my devotion, I am his.” “Then let the bond be sealed.” The elder said, and our hands linked together, like they were supposed to. I never knew the Damon Palace had such a large space for hosting that amount of crowd. More still, it had a detachable roof, and so since the wedding had to be done under the moonlight, we could still do it indoors. The joy on everyone's faces m
Emily's POV I had no business with her, I could never address someone in so little clothes, so I looked at Dathan, he held my stare for about two minutes before giving in. “Au revoir, ladies.” He said, getting up from the bed where they littered around him, and he threw on a shirt. I shifted away from the entrance, a foot or two, just so none of them have reasons to make bodily contact with me. All of them promptly exited the room, leaving Dathan and I. “I'd rather we left the door open.” I said to Dathan, as he moved to shut the door. “I'd do whatever it is I want to.” Dathan said, and banged the door shut, loudly. “What's up with you?” I asked finally. “Did Damon put you up to this?” He asked me. “No.” I answered quickly. “I'm here of my own volition.” “So he doesn't even care.” Dathan said to himself, shook his head while smiling sadly, and gulped down the remaining content of an open bottle. “Forget what I said. Yes, he did. He gave me the permission to.
Damon's POV Every second Zac spent in there with Emily made me ask myself if I was a fool for not properly thinking these things through. ‘I think you want to see her.’ I remember Farh chirping, after watching me knead my thighs in intense expectation. I ignored him, even though he was very correct, and both of us knew it. I didn't play my cards right at the ball. I'm very sure the kindest emotion she feels towards me is repulsion. “Any other thing you want me to know?” I asked Zac. “Yes,” He replied, “Our phones switched for some reason.” “Here.” I handed his over to him, and took mine. Zac didn't say anything, we just quietly switched. I didn't trust him too much. I needed to find out what he'd been up to, so I sacrificed eavesdropping on their convo, for a moment with his phone. Funny stuff? The phone was half empty. Nothing worthy to see. Just a bunch of texts, from him to me, and all other staff at Damon Inc. Nothing else. I flung the phone to the b
Zac’s POVFreda, the girl from earlier, stumbled into Emily's office as fast as she could. I could literally almost see the speed. “I'm sorry I couldn't get ice.” She apologised as she set a cup before Emily and I. “I'm not sure your boss wants to treat me to this.” I smirked. Emily grabbed the cup Freda’s had placed in front of me, handed it back to Freda, poured them both a drink, and asked Freda to gulp it down right before her. “We can't deal with these people ‘professionally’” She answered Freda’s unasked question. I loved the scene. Most beautiful thing I'd seen in a while. I wished I could have them both to me, at a different time, under completely different circumstances. I shook my legs lightly, like it'd shake out the nasty thoughts on my head. I cleared my throat to remind them of my presence, even though they were still so much aware Freda choked on her glass, and I enjoyed watching Emily help her. They scurried out, where I heard Emily had her over to s
Zac’s POVPlaying a character is so hard. I coughed over a hundred times when Damon, my boss, first lit my cigarette. I could handle alcohol, no doubt. I take it like I take water, no biggie. But puffs? Well, I've been made to do it once, and I'm sure I'd never repeat it. Damon made Farh drive me in his newly acquired cyber truck. Proud bastard. “So are you going to get talking?” Emily asked. “You know, about your illegal business.” She added. She's not the girl I used to know any longer. This one was bolder, more outspoken. Emily I used to know was a little more timid, I mean, she'd always been blunt, but not this blunt. I snickered a bit. I had a feeling that Damon wanted the meeting to go without me revealing my identity to her, but since he did not give any clear instructions to that effect, I was gonna default. The absence of law is the absence of crime. “Gotten a name now?” I asked her. Her brows furrowed, and she leaned back. It'd become a staring competition. I
Emily's POV As I approached the cyber truck, one I'd seen only on TV, I took large breaths and swallowed several times. It felt like I'd swallowed my voice too. “Hello.” I said, as I got within what I deemed to be earshot. There was no response, and it made me second guess if I really spoke out loud or in my head. I heard a snicker, and that was the sign that he undoubtedly heard me. I didn't know who it was, but I could very well narrow my options. Regardless, I was determined not to take bullshit from anyone. “I think the ‘no smoking’ signs are clear enough. Good morning.” I said, but not before I slapped the half burnt cigarette out of his hand, and crushed it beneath my feet. “Good morning, Emily.” He looked up and smiled at me. It was a pretty smile, I couldn't deny that, but I was already too irritated, so I smiled curtly and made my way inside. My steps were firm and my strides were gallant, but in me, I was as scared and anxious as an eight year old who was left
Emily's POV Since Freda got the mail asking to have the meeting on Monday, at our office, I'd been walking on eggshells around myself, scared I'd jinx my new fortune. I couldn't do anything to upset mother Destiny for the sweet new path she'd set in front of me. Funniest part? I'd never really been so religious, but I prayed to whoever listened, and at the end of my prayers, it was weird cause there was no name mentioned, like, I had no one to address it to. “I'm happy you're here.” I said to Freda, unprovoked. The clock on the wall read 06:15, Mon. It was the D-day, matter of fact, just a few hours left. I was nervous, and I constantly felt like my bowel was full and needed emptying. Freda, on the other hand, seemed quite chill. She was playing scrabble online, and in my nervousness, I begged her to put me on, after making two silly moves, I logged out, convinced that I was indeed too nervous to concentrate. ‘How am I gonna do this?’ I asked myself in an undertone. “G
Damon's POV “Hell, even I am not sure of what I'm doing. You don't have to be.” I chuckled and sniffed out the light at the bottom of my cigarette in his drink. “I'm sorry sir.” My assistant apologized. Ironically, he's the first guy assistant I'd gotten. After Zyna, I'd plunged into the world of women, letting my life revolve around them, or them revolve around me, I don't care which. “You don't have to be. I get your concern.” I admitted. Regretting that I'd scared him so bad, and made his drink undrinkable. I signalled to the attendant to take it away and bring a new one. It was a Saturday morning and we were already at the bar. The house, my father's palace, was no longer my home, I'd have invited Zac over. I doubt anywhere could ever be with Zyna in it. All the nasty memories I've tried to fight off always come washing back every single time I step foot into the house. If it wasn't such an important heirloom, I'd have converted it into another office space, and re
Emily's POV. “I'm so sorry I had to wake you up. But it couldn't wait. It just couldn't wait.” Freda’s voice interrupted my sleep I checked the wall clock opposite my bed, it was a few minutes past ten am. I'd barely slept for an hour. My head was banging and felt too heavy to hold up. I wanted to turn to the other side and keep on catching my sleep, I had trouble falling asleep and had no intent on being woken up. “You know the contract we applied for?” She started, still fidgeting with her phone. Her eyes danced from my face to her screen as she typed out something ferociously. “We've applied for many, Freda.” My patience had worn out and I wanted to SLEEP. “Yeah, yeah. But the one you called a long shot!” She screamed, trying to juggle my memory. I couldn't remember. My head was fogged. “Can't work with these clues.” I resigned. “So you have something to say?” “Nevada Inc just sent an email. They want us to be their sole marketer and consultant!” She screamed.
Emily's POV “Wipe those tears. You don't have to pity me.” I said to her, “But you're crying too.” She protested, “I admit, but it's not out of pity. I'm too noble a woman to be pitied. Dry your eyes, Freda.” I instructed her again. “Alright, alright.” She conceded. “I screamed so hard and so long, with all my strength. Suddenly, the house was devoid of people. I heard no footsteps, I saw no one through the door Damon left opened. I finally gave up and submitted myself to him, ignoring the warm gush of blood that'd begun to dry on my thighs.” I smiled. “I remember how he got pissed that I wasn't screaming anymore, said he liked it that way, I was a silly girl he wanted to teach a lesson, he slapped me a couple of times, pinched me in sensitive areas, he wanted so badly for me to scream, screech, make a sound.” “But I didn't, I couldn't. The pain in me was far worse than that outside of me. I was as still as an old piece of log, I lay static, my mind blank, and my hear
Emily's POV “Days like this made me seriously wanna consider drugs.” I said in an undertone. “I'm sorry.” She apologized again, looking down at her feet. “I had no choice. They singled me out of the scampering crowd. It was two hefty men, I wasn't rough handled, but they gave the impression that I could be, depending on how much I cooperate with them.” Freda’s voice was low and shaky. “It would be unfair if I said it was all you.” I sighed. “I've been running away from a life that's faster than I could ever be.” “I'm sorry.” She apologised again. “Come on! Don't do that. It's not even your fault. I should be apologising for putting you in all this mess.” I chuckled maniacally. In just one night, I'd been with the worst Alphas there could ever be, in all respects. Ego, lust, danger, ambitions, motives, just everything, you name it. “Are you scared?” She asked me, making me laugh even more. “I lived with him, why would I be?” I asked, and her eyes flew wide open.
