A few minutes later, Aralia approached, stiff necked and shimmering with incredible beauty. Her platinum hair was braided over her shoulder, crystals that mirrored flashes of pure snow were dotted in her hair. The form fitting dress she wore fluttered to the ground in waves of icy satin.
The cold that clung to Aralia wasn’t like the blizzard the High Lady summoned. Aralia’s cold came from deep within, from whatever block of ice held her soul.
“The High Lady wishes to speak with you, Atlas.” Aralia turned towards my true-mate, not sparing me a glance as she moved to place a hand on his shoulder.
“Do not overstep, Aralia.” Was all Atlas said before leaning down to place his lips against my own. His voice was soft, and his eyes met mine for just a second. The kiss he gave me was frantic but passionate, meant to show everyone in this court that we were together. “I’ll be back shortly, kitten.”
I nodded a b
“What’s up with Adelina?” I asked Atlas when we all but sprinted from the dining hall and back into the room I had first woken up in. “The kid knows way more than she lets on. Alette clearly tries to keep her quiet, but she’s determined to be heard.”Atlas had little grasp of where we were in the castle, but the posted guards were actually very kind and showed us the way.“I don’t know much more than you do.” Atlas admitted, sitting on the edge of the bed as he pulled off the leather boots he wore. “Adelina trusted me the moment I approached her. She already knew who I was, even though only the High Lady, Aralia, and Tamara were expecting me. Alette only trusts me because Adelina does.”“Isn’t that odd?” I mused, “That a teenager would follow the word of a kid? Do you think it’s some kind of Fae thing?”“I have no clue. I’ve thought the same t
“How are we supposed to sleep after that?” I grumbled, my face pressed against the hard planes of Atlas’s chest. We had been escorted back to our chambers—with a guard of twelve men. I wasn’t sure whether or not I should be insulted. Atlas and I could easily take more than twelve men, even if they were Fae.We had curled up in bed the moment we returned, plunging the room into darkness as we both recounted what had just happened.“She’s practically declaring war against Micah, based on Tamara’s word. If anything, I bet she stalked those Earth Court guards down. Probably went onto their territory to do it. Micah wouldn’t have sent guards into another Court to find us.” I frowned until my forehead ached, wracking my brain for an answer that made sense. When it finally hit me, I knew I had to be right.“I agree. I might not know Micah well, but he knows the damage a war would cause. He wouldn&
I tried not to marvel too much at what happened this morning, but a faint glow clung to me along with the thin sheen of sweat coating my body. Every time I thought about it, my stomach fluttered and I grew uncomfortably warm. We had half an hour to settle in each other’s arms, leaving heated touches and devouring one another with our lips.I took that time to realize my feelings towards Atlas had changed. We were growing closer, and forgiveness had completely slipped from my mind. What happened in the past, it could only hurt me if I allowed it. Mistakes are an inevitable curse in life, always harming those on the outside, but I wouldn’t let it hurt me anymore. We stayed in bed as long as we could before finally getting dressed for the day. While I slipped on a pair of tight-fitting pants, and a snug top cropped above my belly button, I told Atlas about the dream I had last night.“Normally, I’d be skeptical, but this place is unpredictab
“I’ve heard that the powers of High Lord are usually passed down to the men in the family, is that not true?” I asked Alette and Adelina, “You both seem so sure that the only options are Adelina and Aralia, but what about Alette or Atlas?” “Becoming High Lady is not my fate, that much I know.” Alette sighed, the corners of her blush-colored lips tilting downwards. “The power does favor males, but I’ve seen every outcome. In every single one, either Aralia or I are named High Lady.” Adelina frowned; her sapphire eyes turned to Atlas. “In some, you stood by her side. You even tried to kill her in a few, but you only succeeded in one. You died, but valiantly.” My stomach soured a bit at the mention of Atlas dying, and I reached over to grab his hand in my own. The mere thought of Atlas being killed—it felt like I was fading away as well. “The future changes constantly. Last minute decisions can completely alter how things turn out.” Alette shrugged, deli
“Are you concentrating, kitten?” Atlas mused his voice thick with entertainment.I reminded myself for the thirtieth time to ignore him and focus on the task Adelina gave me. It was going horribly, and Atlas found endless amusement in my outbursts and momentary losses in temper.Atlas had already connected with water, and Alette had been coaching him on how to truly manipulate the magic surrounding his element. Apparently, we all had our own magical signature. The way one wove the threads of magic was totally unique. I longed for when I would finally connect with water and end this boring cycle.“You scrunch your nose when you concentrate, did you know that?” He smirked, and I willed myself to remain calm, to keep myself loose and relaxed. “I don’t mean to pry, but it’s just so very adorable.”Steam billowed from the pool of water I was hunched over, and a furious squeal left my lips when my concentration wa
She was walking our way when I noticed, and it was far too late to try and cover the look of surprise on my face. Her long ears twitched and her fingers came up to touch the thick braid of hair that hung over her shoulder.“Make yourselves comfortable.” She told the two of us, her voice both warm and soft. “The tailors will be here shortly.”“Tell me, are you related to the previous water nymph?” Atlas asked, with a tilt of his head. His towering height and deep voice made him horribly intimidating. The water nymph flushed, most likely from a bit of fear. It was a strange sight, considering her pale blue skin. Her blush seemed to turn her a few shades deeper, almost cerulean in color. “Or is there another reason you’re wearing her face?”“Oh—well, it was Adelina’s idea.” She sputtered, her personality far different from Melia’s. Whoever she was, she was flustered and a bit afraid
I could hear the pattering of their feet as they echoed down the hall, and had just enough time to turn to Adelina and voice the question burning in my mind.“How do you keep track of them throughout the entire castle?” I whispered hurriedly, “It can’t be easy, this place is near-endless.”“It took Alette nearly two years to master the magic that made it possible.” She murmured, not moving her eyes from the grate to meet my own.“And how are the enthusiastic Air Court brothers?” Aralia drawled slowly, “Clearly they failed the one purpose we had for them. How’s this next mission coming along?”“Cailean is as insufferable as ever, but he’s still on our side. I’ll snuff out any weakness once it rears it’s head. Cathan is a fucking joy as always, but I do suppose I prefer him over Cailean.” Tamara mused, her voice dripping with wicked amusement. “The mi
“Atlas?” I gasped, instinctively placing my hands on either side of his face. His skin was smooth and cold as ice, as pale as his glazed eyes. My fingertips ached as they grazed the stubble on his chin, and I swore I could see the faintest hint of steam.I grasped the magic that made me what I was, and used the sun to build a small fire within my gut. I let that fire grow, fueling it with thoughts of Atlas. The magic felt different this time. There was the usual warmth of the sun…but, there was something else. It felt radiant and pure, and vastly similar to all four elements. It warmed my skin, giving it a golden glow that was in complete opposition with Atlas’s silvery shine.“Can you hear me?” I whispered, keeping the palms of my hands flat against his face. There was no change. If anything, he seemed more detached than before.A second later, his frigid hands were clasped around my wrists. There was nothing g
