Chapter 2

"OH MY GOD, Mr. DeMarco! I'm so sorry!" Faith looked at him wide-eyed. She was horrified. She was already making a terrible impression on him. What if she had just ruined something important?

Anthony stood up abruptly and walked to the other side of the desk while Faith frantically attempted to save the papers and wipe down the desk.

"What is the matter with you?" Anthony barked.

"I'm really sorry. It was an accident. I will clean this up immediately!"

"I'm talking about your hand. Why aren't you taking care of it? Are you dumb?" he said gruffly, grabbed her arm, and pulled her toward the bathroom.

His touch gave her goosebumps. Is he worried about me? Faith thought to herself.

Anthony turned the faucet on and held her hand under cold water. He was still not looking at her. A tiny vein was visible on his forehead.

Oh great, he is definitely annoyed at me. Faith sighed.

"Have it treated as soon as you leave this room; otherwise, it'll scar," Anthony said.

"Yes sir," Faith whispered. Warmth spread through her body as he held her arms. Too bad it was just for a brief moment.

She grabbed a cold compress and some bandages from the first aid kit box and used them to treat her wound, then went back to work. She didn't want to go to the hospital and waste a workday. She couldn't afford it.

But she couldn't last an hour in the office without being called into the boss's office again.

"Ms. Williams, why aren't you going to the hospital?" Anthony asked. He seemed even more irritated than before.

"There is a lot of work left, so I thought..." she couldn't understand why she felt so tongue-tied in front of him. Get it together, Faith, she scolded herself in her mind.

"Go home, Ms. Williams. You're excused for the day. Get your burn treated. I will not risk a lawsuit when you are injured in my company," Anthony ordered quietly.

Faith looked down. "Yes, sir," she said. This wasn't good. Going home now would cut her hours short.

"Don't worry about the hour cut. I told Nancy to adjust your timesheet in the computer so you will get a full day's pay," Anthony declared as if he had read her mind again. "Also, send her the bill from the hospital, and the company will take care of it."

Faith released a sigh. Anthony DeMarco wasn't as cold as people said. She mumbled thanks and packed up her stuff.

She stopped by the pharmacy to pick up her father's medicine on her way from the hospital. The pharmacist saw her from the other side of the counter and smiled brightly.

"Faith! Hi, I didn't expect you to see here so early," he said.

"I had to take care of some things. I was just wondering if you had the prescription ready?" she looked at him expectantly.

"Of course," he nodded and took out a bag.

Faith's heart twitched as she saw the amount written on the cash register. Forty-five dollars! As far as she remembered, she only had twenty-dollar left in her bank account as she had to pay one of her father's medical bills.

"Something wrong?" The pharmacist looked concerned.

"Um...I think I'll come back for this. Hold onto it for me, would you, Cameron?" Faith laughed nervously.

"Are you sure? You said he needed it, right?"

"Yeah. I'm sure. I'll come back," Faith quickly said and left the pharmacy before he could ask any more questions. How embarrassing.

Her father was waiting for her by the door.

"Where is my medicine?" he asked. Gee, dad, a hello would've been nice, Faith thought.

"I couldn't get them today. Don't worry. I will go back and get them as soon as possible," she smiled at him reassuringly.

"I NEED THEM! Can't you do anything right, you stupid bitch!" his voice grated harshly.

"Dad, please..."

"You're useless! I raised a stupid, worthless daughter! Go get my medicine right now. Do you think just because I'm in a wheelchair, you can treat me like this?" he picked up a vase and threw it at her.

Thankfully, she was able to catch it before it shattered. "Dad, just calm down, okay? I told you I would get them as soon as I could. I'm the only person who earns a living in this house, so I have to wait till I get paid again. Why can't you understand that?" Faith tried to explain calmly even though she had to explain the same thing several times before. Her dad simply didn't care to listen anymore.

"Oh, so just because you earn a little bit of money, you're suddenly better than everyone?" her father sneered.

"How can you say that? I am trying my best!" Faith cried out. She didn't know how long she could take this.

"And who knows where you actually get money from? God knows where you are going and who you fucking because I don't see you doing anything more useful than to use your whore body..."

Faith tuned him out and strode up the stairs so she didn't have to listen to more of his ugly words. Tears stung her eyes. This wasn't the first time her father spoke to her like this, and it definitely won't be the last, but it still hurt her deeply.

Her sister Mary peeked out of her room with a terrified expression on her face.

"Are you okay?" she asked.

Faith sighed. "I'm fine. Go back inside. Dad isn't feeling well, as you heard," she smiled weakly.

Mary nodded and closed the door.

Faith let herself fall onto the bed and closed her eyes. Another day in paradise, she thought bitterly as she fell asleep.

Faith got adjusted to her new position within two weeks. To her relief, she didn't have to interact with Anthony as much. Most of the time, their meeting lasted only ten minutes or less. They were small tasks. The coffee here, sign documents there, nothing she couldn't handle. And the pay was good. At least enough to cover bills and medicines for her impatient father. Things were going well until one day. One Sunday afternoon, she heard the dreadful news about her father. She was making coffee for Anthony as usual when the receptionist Lana entered the break room. "Um...Faith, you have a phone call," she said. "What's the matter?" Faith looked at Lana, whose face was pale as a ghost. "Um...you better take this call," Lana quickly said and left. Faith felt nauseous. She had a bad feeling about the phone call. "Hello?" she picked up the phone and waited for the other person to speak. "Faith, this is your uncle Rudy." Uncle Rudy? She hadn't spoken to that guy since two years ag

Anthony couldn't believe his ears. This timid, seemingly modest woman was offering her body to save herself from going to prison. He had never realized she could be this shameless. This wasn't the first time he had received an offer like this. But it was under a different circumstance by someone stark opposite of Faith. And they all seemed like women who had done something like that before to get what they wanted. Anthony never accepted their offer. He didn't have time for such a trifling matter. He didn't like to date or mess around like some spoiled billionaire playboy. Time was money, and he didn't like to waste it by chasing after women. He agreed to be engaged to his business partner's daughter, Malcolm Sevirno, simply because he wanted to strengthen their business relationship. There was no love between them, and he was okay with that. But Faith's sudden boldness piqued his interest. Anthony was seeing her in a different light. This mousy woman stood her ground and agreed to

Guilt. Anger. The emotions Anthony wasn't familiar with before. Not until tonight, anyway. But now they overwhelmed him, all thanks to Faith Williams. He was furious. Furious at himself and angry at her. He never made an impulsive decision like this, but he went through it. In the morning, he woke up feeling even worse. Why couldn't she tell him she was a virgin? He would've sent her home right away. Stupid woman. Her first time was wasted on him. He shouldn't have been so rough with her and treated her like shit, either. This was all wrong. He should've stopped as soon as he realized it was her first time. But desire overwhelmed him, and he kept going. He didn't feel like himself. He was greedy with lust. He felt a rush of electricity running through his veins as her core tightly hugged his member. He wanted to feel her more. He felt his pants tighten as he imagined being inside her again. And her scent... It was sweet, subtle, and beautiful. "Fuck!" he cursed out loud. He w

Faith lay down on the bed, feeling mentally exhausted. Diana was supposed to come back to work in the next few weeks so she wouldn't have to work for Anthony anymore. At least not as his assistant. She could go back to her old position and avoid seeing him around in the office. What a relief that would be. The house felt calm and quiet after her father died. The old man kept it lively by constantly cursing and screaming at her. Maybe she will finally be able to sleep at night. And perhaps her nightmares will stop too? Time will tell. Faith decided to get up and check on Mary. She should be home from school and doing her homework right now. She paused in front of Mary's room as she heard her talking. Was she not alone? Faith knocked on the door. "Come in!" Mary chirped from the other side. Mary was half lying on her bed with her cell phone. "What is it?" "Who are you talking to?" Faith looked at her questioningly. "No one." Faith observed Mary's face closely. Her cheeks were flus

"Sir?" Anthony looked at Faith's terrified expression and suppressed his laughter. Guess she didn't anticipate him saying yes to her spontaneous invitation. "Again, stop calling me Sir. I said I would love to come over and taste your pumpkin pie. Unless you are withdrawing your invitation?" he raised his eyebrows. "No, no, I am not. It's just that I haven't had a visitor in a while, and my house isn't in good shape," Faith said quietly. "Then, good thing I'm not interested in your house. I am interested in your dessert," he smirked. "Oh, okay," she murmured. "What are you afraid of? Are you not good at making a pie?" Anthony looked at her and narrowed his eyes. "No...I'm pretty good at it," she said quietly. "Okay, then. Well? Aren't you going to give me your address?" Anthony leaned over and whispered. Faith looked startled, but then she gathered herself and rummaged in her purse for a pen and paper. She pulled out a pen and tissue paper and quickly jotted down the address be

She had to dig in her closet to find a nice dress to wear at the Christmas party. She didn't like to buy unnecessary clothes or dress up, so she only had a few clothing items. Luckily, she still had the party dress her mom used to wear that looked flattering to her own figure. It was a white, backless midi dress that hugged her body. She didn't like to wear something that showed this much skin, but this was all she had.On the night of the party, she put the dress on. She tied her hair in an elegant bun and put on her mom's pearl necklace. She looked at the mirror and sighed. What was she doing, dressing like that and going to a party like she was a social butterfly? She hated going out and dressing up. If her father was alive, he would've scoffed at her and tell her she looked like a common prostitute. But he wasn't here anymore, so she didn't have to be subjected to his scrutiny any longer. She wondered what Anthony would think of her dress. What the he

Please follow me. I'm your adoption specialist." She led them into a private room.Jodie and Phil were nervous, but they answered all her questions as honestly as possible, telling Lisa about their backgrounds, jobs, and home life. Two years later,Phil nearly groaned as Jodie presented yet another ridiculous home decor in front of him."What the heck is this?"He demanded.Jodie smiled proudly. "It's a wall hanging made entirely out of recycled bottle caps! Isn't it amazing?"Phil rolled his eyes. "It's a bunch of garbage glued together. How is that amazing?"Jodie's pouted. "You just don't understand art."Phil laughed. "Oh really? Is that what it is?"Jodie narrowed her eyes, sensing Phil's sarcasm. "Yes, it is. And it's also environmentally friendly. I think it's a great addition to our home."Phil shook his head. "I'm all for being eco-friendly, but that doesn't mean we have to sacrifice style and taste.""Stop being so grouchy all the time," Jodie snapped."I'm not grouchy.""Yes, you are!" Jodie argued."No, I'm not." Phil shook his head."Yes, you are."Phil sighed. He could never win an argument against Jodie. "Fine, maybe I am a little grouchy. "OH MY GOD!" Jodie screamed as soon as Phil carried her inside his loft."What?" Phil scowled and put her down."This is the ugliest place I've ever seen! No wonder you wanted to hire me as your interior decorator."Phil groaned. "Jodie, I was joking when I said that and this place isn't the bad.""Oh no? Then why does it look like a dungeon?" Jodie gestured to the dark walls and minimal furniture. "And what is with that couch?""It's comfortable," Phil defended."Comfortable? It looks like a block of ice!" Jodie shook her head. "We need to start from scratch. New paint, new furniture, new everything."Phil sighed. "Fine, but we are not making the place look like a unicorn threw up on it."Jodie grinned. "I was joking about that too. Trust me, Phil. I'll make this place look like a palace." "Alright, my queen. You can do all that later. Now can we get on with our wedding night?" Phil and Jodie stood at the altar, holding hands as they exchanged vows."I, Phil, take you, Jodie, to be my lawfully wedded wife," Phil said, looking deeply into Jodie's eyes. "I promise to love, cherish, and support you in all you do. I promise to be there for you in good times and in bad, and to always be your partner and best friend."Jodie's eyes filled with tears as she repeated the same words back to him. They exchanged rings and sealed their love with a kiss, surrounded by their family and friends. After the ceremony, they walked hand in hand to the reception, where a live band was playing and everyone was dancing and having a good time. Jodie's vision for the décor had come to life, with elegant white and gold accents throughout the room.As they sat down for dinner, Jodie leaned over to Phil and whispered, "I can't believe we're actually married.""I know," Phil said, beaming at her. I meant, what did he say about your illness?" Jodie blushed. "Oh, right. He was really sweet and understanding about it. He said he wanted to be there for me and that we'll face it together if it came to that. It was actually really nice to hear," Jodie said, a small smile appearing on her face. Faith smiled back. "I'm glad he's being supportive. You deserve someone who will be there for you, no matter what." Jodie nodded. "Yeah, I know. And I'm starting to think that maybe Phil could be that person." Faith raised an eyebrow. "Really? You're considering him as a serious option?" Jodie shrugged. "I don't know. It's just...he always pushed me away before but..."
