Chapter 15 You Can’t Buy Off Someone If You Don’t Have The Money

"You’re the governor of Atville, who is loved by thousands of people. Many people will kill to have a relationship with you. Don’t you think it’s funny that you’re telling me you’ll die without me?" Although Scarlett appeared calm on the outside, she was struggling to control her emotions and remain polite as she remembered what this man had done to her mother.

"I’m being framed. You have to help me."

"How am I supposed to do that?"

"You’re a famous lawyer; I’m sure you’ll find a way. As long as you’re willing to give it a shot, you can save me."

As soon as Theodore said this, Scarlett immediately understood why he was being so kind to her, even to the extent of hitting Kate just now. It seemed that he just wanted to take advantage of her status as a lawyer and have her represent him in court.

"Six years ago, you were the one who wanted to cut ties with me! So, whatever happens to you now has nothing to do with me. You should ask somebody else."

All of this was Theodore’s karma. When he'd been out drinking and being with other women, had he ever thought about his daughter and sick wife back home? When he'd announced that he wanted to marry Kate, had he ever considered how his wife and daughter would feel? No, he never did. He'd always been a selfish man. Being framed for corruption and taking bribes was God’s punishment for him.

Scarlett clearly remembered how badly her father treated both her and her mother. Yet, despite her cruel words, she couldn’t be so heartless as to turn a blind eye to Theodore’s affairs. She'd been investigating Theodore’s corruption case for several days, and every piece of information didn’t look terrible for Theodore. Based on her years of experience investigating cases, she knew that once Theodore was convicted of this crime, he would be in prison for the rest of his life.

It wasn’t until Scarlett found out about the man who had given Theodore the ten million dollars that she saw a glimmer of hope. If that man could testify for Theodore and tell the judge that he'd never asked for that money and that he'd just bought something from Theodore, things would be easy to handle.

That night, Scarlett couldn’t sleep at all because she hadn’t managed to identify that man yet. Frustrated, she rushed over to her son’s room, hoping that the little boy could give her some advice. Lucas was a gifted kid. He had a talent for investigating cases. Whenever Scarlett couldn’t figure out the next step, he would solve the problem easily.

"Lucas, my boy... Mommy has something to ask you. Can I bother you for a bit?" Scarlett climbed onto the little boy’s bed and gently patted his little cheek.

"Ugh, can we talk about it tomorrow? I want to sleep." Lucas had been asleep, dreaming that he was a superhero who saved the world.

"It’s just for a little while…" Ignoring Lucas’ drowsiness, Scarlett described in detail what she had found out so far in his ear. The little boy was sleeping soundly, and Scarlett didn’t know if he was listening. "Huh? Lucas, mommy is talking to you. Answer me…"

"Hehe, I’m a superhero. Do you think you can buy me off with ten million dollars? I’m a rich guy, and you still want to bribe me even though you have no money." Lucas licked his lips as if there was honey smeared on them. "Idiot, how can a poor person get so much money? Don’t you know how to follow a trail?"

"Sleep well, you brat. I’ll get out of your hair." Scarlett knew she couldn’t wake him up, so she covered his legs with the quilt and left. When she returned to her bed, Lucas’ intermittent words were still echoing in her mind.

"How can a person with no money buy someone off?"

That was true! Ten million dollars wasn’t a small amount of money!
