I was still trying to figure out what had happened in that room fifteen minutes ago. The special task Hunter had given me should have pushed me to the verge of panic. But panic was nowhere to be found. Instead, I felt strangely focused and calm. A blush formed each time I thought about the reason behind it…

I couldn't have been more grateful that Fifi and Ace decided not to comment on my state when they returned to my room. Of course, Ace barely stifled a laugh as he helped me smooth all the delicate layers of my gown. Fifi fixed my makeup quickly, but we no longer had time to tie up my hair.

“Shouldn't your personal maid be here, helping us?” Fifi raised her brows as she looked at me with a wry smile.

“Gianna took a few days off,” I explained. Truthfully, I found it a little strange since it was Marcello who had told me about it. He'd said that Gianna was sick, but she'd looked fine the day before. I couldn't help but think it was yet another one of Marcello's ways to mess with me. Fo

My face hurt from keeping my faint, polite smile plastered as the mercilessly long line of guests congratulated Hunter and me on our marriage. My back muscles burned from holding my posture as straight as possible. Not to mention that this little crown on my head was getting heavier by the second, and even lifting my chin had become a struggle.“You're doing great,” Hunter murmured between shaking hands and listening to insincere praises. “It'll be over soon.”“I sure hope so,” I grunted and saw him stifling a laugh.Thankfully, I was able to memorize the ridiculously long list of guests, the information about their families, and their connections. I even separated them into groups based on what I had learned. The first group was the less important families, mostly too weak to stand a threat. In the second group, I placed all the families that either openly supported Hunter or could have been called potential allies. The third group was where I put those with rather hostile attitudes

  • All Because I Kissed a Stranger   Countdown

HUNTERI watched my firecracker in awe. She kept her expression blank and her chin high, calmly observing her father and his wife walk away with their heads low. Catherine might not have realized that yet, but more than a few people watched her interaction with the Duncans. They evaluated her strength, deciding whether or not she was someone easy to mess with. She passed the test flawlessly. She had proven she could use the authority she had been given. I knew that act cost her, but I would not let others see any cracks in her mask.I stepped closer just in time to pull her into my arms as she stumbled. “Careful, firecracker,” I murmured against her ear. “I know you're tired. It'll be over soon.”She turned to me, her chest heaving and falling at a fast pace. “I… I humiliated them,” she breathed out.I could see that righteous side of her crawl out to the surface, but I wouldn't let her feel any remorse. “You did what you had to,” I told her. “And you were fucking hot while doing it.”

CATHERINE“God, those Blandini bitches just sit there and glare at us.” Bella Rossi clicked her tongue and folded her arms across her chest. She was one of many Mafia Princesses at the wedding, but so far, she was the only one who seemed genuinely friendly. Her family had been engaged in a few business projects with Hunter's father back in the day, and Hunter had been doing some business with Bella's father as well. Certainly, I would have never put my guard down around someone I had just met, but my instincts were telling me that this cute-looking girl with curly brown hair and large brown eyes was relatively safe. Besides, Fifi had known Bella before, and she liked her. Perhaps I was starting to like her too…“Those idiots are just jealous,” Fifi huffed, and Bella nodded in agreement.“Sure they are.” Then she not-so-discreetly pointed at the tall one with shoulder-length chestnut hair. “Especially the oldest, the one in the middle. Her name is Daniela, and she used to brag that she

My breath caught in my throat. What was Dante doing here? And where were the guards? If there was anyone Hunter's men would have immediately marked as a threat, it would have been him!“Cousin?” Daniela breathed, her eyes widening. “You want to help HER?! You can't be serious!”I hated to admit it, but she took those words out of my mouth. There was no way Dante wanted to help me. He had no reason to. If anything, I could bet he wanted to use this situation to screw me over. Not to mention that his mother was Blandini. His cousins should have been the ones he sided with, right?Dante gave Daniela a cold smile, and she stumbled back. I had no idea what kind of game he was playing, but I sure as hell wanted no part in it. Then he grabbed Daniela's hand, rubbing the spot where the thorns protruded from her skin. She cried and jerked her hand away. “Are you crazy?! That hurt!”The smile he gave her made my stomach churn. “I didn't think you're such a crybaby,” he purred.“S-she's injured,

  • All Because I Kissed a Stranger   Under Attack

HUNTERIt took Dante and his men twenty minutes to turn my wedding into a fucking war zone. We could have easily avoided it if it weren't for some fucked-up sentiment for the old times and the old rules. As the future Don Cartelli, I was supposed to respect those rules as if they were the utmost sacred law… or rather the only law that applied to us. But those rules didn't grant us peace. They brought bloodshed. No one in their right mind would invite enemies to their homes, but somehow it was expected of me to welcome all those at the top of the food chain. As if I needed their presence to sanction my marriage. As if I needed their approval to know my actual strength. As if I needed them to witness and acknowledge that I met all the conditions my grandfather had written in his will.We all knew what it was. This was a test… and a chance for our enemies to defeat me on my own ground. Certainly, we could have prevented the attack… to some extent. He had monitored the area, but we couldn

  • All Because I Kissed a Stranger   Restless

CATHERINEI realized what had just happened and froze. The back of Hunter's jacket was soaked in his blood. I had no idea where he was shot, and I could only pray the shot wasn't lethal. The time seemed to slow down. I saw a menacing smile spread across Dante's face. He shifted his grip on the gun, aiming at Hunter's head. Hunter's gun fell to the ground as he lowered to his knees, preparing to lurch. I might have screamed as I heard the shot, and it took me a second to realize it wasn't Dante who fired…I blinked and saw Dante bent in half, holding his bleeding arm, his weapon lying on the ground. The sounds of several voices and footsteps came from the left—Hunter's men. If I hadn't been already sitting on the ground, I would have collapsed in relief.Dante cursed, turned around, and started running. Before I drew another breath, I saw Hunter lunge after him, following him through the gate and disappearing into complete darkness. “No!” I cried out, struggling to rise to my knees. Go

  • All Because I Kissed a Stranger   The Bitter Victory

HUNTERI was furious and fucking tired. I didn't know how long I had chased Dante before he reached a dead end. I rammed him down, sent a few blows, and was more than ready to end him… until I realized he wasn't alone. The next thing I knew, I was on the ground, and that fucker was driving away in a black SUV. My men came less than a minute later, far too late to stop them. The one who helped Dante could have killed me—should have killed me. I had no doubt he had a gun and a perfect opportunity to shoot me in the back. And yet, I had been left alive. Spared. For some reason, that pissed me off even further.“Hold still,” Fabio Lanaro grunted, glaring at me. He had been the Cartelli's family doctor since I could remember, which meant he was most likely old as fuck. He was excellent at treating gunshot wounds, but perhaps after years of working for the Mafia family, any doctor would excel at that. Unfortunately, aside from that, he also excelled at being a rude prick and a giant pain in

  • All Because I Kissed a Stranger   A Little Bit Of Honesty

CATHERINEI didn't remember the last time I slept so peacefully. A soft smile tugged at my lips as I turned around, eyes still closed. I drew a deep breath through my nose. Then another one…My eyes jerked open, and my heart began to pound. This wasn't my bed. This wasn't my bedroom! My mind turned on the highest speed, frantically piecing together everything that had happened yesterday. The realization hit me like a speeding truck.“Hunter,” I breathed out, hectically scanning the room. Because I was still in his bedroom, lying in HIS bed, and he… He wasn't here.I slowly rose to sit, combing my hair with my fingers. I remembered entering his room and sitting on the sofa… Fuck. I must have fallen asleep, but why did I suddenly end up sleeping in his bed? Had he carried me here?My heart tripped at that thought. I examined the other side of the bed and swallowed. The sheets were crumpled, and every inch was heavily soaked in his scent. If he'd been here and had enough strength to carr

I drew a deep breath and slowly descended the stairs, heading to the salon. I debated whether I should dress up or keep it casual. I chose the latter, as if I paid little mind to Hunter's unexpected visit. I was determined to show him his presence was unwelcome, and I only decided to meet him so he would stop bothering me and leave.I kept repeating it in my head as I walked through the corridor with my hands fisted into balls. I raised my chin and straightened up my back while summoning my composure, anything to cover the storm of emotions coiling inside me.I walked to the doors and opened them with one confident swing. I passed the threshold, and my eyes instantly landed on Hunter. He was sitting on the sofa, two armed guards standing beside him. Logan, my new six-foot-three, bulky chief of security, decided to escort my husband here personally. Now he and Daniel, his second, watched Hunter's every movement as if he were a deadly predator on the loose.I was no expert, but I could

CATHERINEThe Pink Opium. My grandma created the Pink Opium. It was hard to accept the reality no matter how many times I had read the entry in her diary. I was certain that the completed formula was somewhere in her study. I was its new owner. I currently possessed something all the renegades would have killed me for.A shudder rushed through me. The rising panic within me encouraged me to find matches and gasoline and burn down all the documents and the laboratory. But a weak voice reminded me that Grandma created Pink Opium to help people, not turn them into a weapon.Lina helped me find several more Grandma's diaries. I brought them all to one of the bedrooms I picked as mine—at least for now—because, well… I decided to stay. Knowing I actually owned this estate and was Katerina Fedorova's only heir felt terrifying but also exciting. I was still somewhere in the middle of accepting the fact that I had suddenly become rich, but I could already feel how it empowered me.Of course, i

My mind was a fucking mess. I was slowly losing myself in the agonizing swirl of thoughts, drafting new scenarios with no good way out of this situation. I lifted my whiskey glass to my lips and poured the liquor down my throat. At least the burn helped silence the noises in my head… for about two seconds.“So what did you tell Guido?” Rowan's voice and piercing gaze shattered my momentary calm.I lowered my glass and grunted, “Nothing. I got back into my car and drove away.”His eyes narrowed as if he tried to read my thoughts. “What was your reaction when you saw Arianna again?”I drank from my glass. “It was… intense,” I admitted. “It felt like everything I've ever felt for her returned and amplified.”“Damn,” he drawled, reaching for his whiskey. “So… now what? If you love Arianna, where does it put Catherine?”“I've never said I love Arianna,” I corrected. “This… initial surge of feelings lasted a moment and then gave way to something akin to pity, I guess.”Rowan's brows inched

  • All Because I Kissed a Stranger   Torn

HUNTERMy hands at my sides kept fisting and opening. The overwhelming tension had turned my shoulders into stone hours ago, and now, the unbearable stiffness began to spread throughout my body. To say I was torn would have been an understatement. I was fucking certain the choice I had made would soon bite me in the ass, but there was no good way out of this situation, and the last thing I wanted was to let Guido Pelligrini know I had lost my wife somewhere.“Drink?” Guido placed a whiskey glass on the coffee table and gave me a knowing smirk. “You look like you need one.”Not one. Had I drunk an entire bottle or two, I was willing to bet I would have remained sober as fuck. He took my silence as a reply and filled my glass with amber liquor. I snatched it from the table and gulped down half of it. Then I sucked in a breath and started to pace around Guido's salon.Half of me screamed I shouldn't be here. I should have been heading to Bellport, looking for Catherine, making sure she w

“And here are the third floor's bedrooms.” Lina gestured at the doors in front of us. “The nicest is the one in the corner.” She let out a soft giggle. She and Ivan, her husband, had been showing me around the estate for the past three hours. My head was spinning, and my chest kept clenching harder and harder. Why had my mom thrown all of this away? Why had she allowed us to become nearly penniless when she could have had all of this?We entered another cozy chamber with a dark wood floor, bright furniture, and an amazing amount of light coming from the wall-size windows. “Everything here looks incredible,” I murmured, scanning the large canopy bed in the center.“Katerina wanted this to resemble her old home as much as possible,” Lina said, lining up with me as I walked to the window, opening to a small balcony.I gave her a faint smile before turning my gaze to the view. There was nothing but miles of woods outside—a place perfectly hidden from the outside world. “Did my mom… live h

CATHERINEPerhaps I was making a huge mistake. I didn't know if the place I was looking for still existed. This could be a trap. I could be walking straight into the lair of our enemies…“Our enemies,” I muttered, realizing how bitter the word “our” tasted. Was there even “us”? I was foolish to trust Hunter. I was foolish to believe he hadn't lied about anything else. I had heard about his meeting with Guido Pelligrini. I should have known he at least considered allying with him, and the worst part was that I couldn't even be mad at him for it. It was a wise thing to do—divorce me and marry a Princess that had an army by her side.Believing that we could have had a true relationship was naïve. Don Cartelli should have had a wife who granted him more power, and I couldn't give him that. I had known that for a long time. I couldn't stay by his side. Still, his lie felt like a stab in the heart. And I kept bleeding…I should have faced Hunter, shoved those damn documents in his face, and

  • All Because I Kissed a Stranger   The Price for My Mistakes

HUNTERI stared at the burner phone lying on my desk, one Grasso had given me. Rowan followed my line of sight and stepped closer.“Do you seriously believe Grasso will give you what you want?” He offered me a wry smile.I gave him a look. “Do you seriously believe I could trust this fucker after what happened the last time?”He sighed in relief. “Fuck, I hoped you'd say that.”“He sent us straight into the renegades' trap. Now I'm about to return the favor.” I motioned my chin at the phone. “As soon as that cunt sends us the address, I'll call Carlo Evola and Hisa Azumi. Let them deal with Grasso, and honestly, I hope they will skin him alive.”A grim smile stretched across Rowan's lips. “Yeah… I wouldn't mind if they tortured him for days. Although I doubt they have patience for it.” Then he leaned against my desk and locked his eyes on me. “But… what if the renegades have the evidence we want? Isn't it tempting to play their game a little longer?”I loosened a breath. “I thought I w

My blood froze in my veins. I stared at Hunter and saw his fists clenching. Would he truly sell me to Grasso to get the evidence? I knew that this evidence was something he had always wanted. This was the way to avenge his parents. Was this my worth for him? I had no value as his wife. I couldn't get him the allies he needed. But now, he could trade me for something he desired for a long time.Suddenly, those words became cruelly familiar. It sounded exactly like what that man in Chicago had said to me. The only difference was that he had used the past tense...My stomach twisted into knots. Had he been referring to some previous deal between Grasso and Hunter? Had the red-haired man been telling the truth? I clamped my hand over my mouth, fearing I might vomit. Still, I had to hear it from Hunter… even if that truth could break me.“So what now?” Hunter locked his eyes on Grasso. “Do you expect me to let you leave this place freely and wait for you to bring me some imaginary document

CATHERINEShe died holding my hand. She smiled faintly, her eyes closed, and she drifted into a deep sleep, one she had never woken up from. Some would say it was a “good death,” as if there could have been anything good about dying…“At least she didn't suffer,” I heard from one of the doctors. It was a small consolation, but not enough to take a single fracture of my grief. The preparations for the funeral were a blur. I shoved my emotions away until every decision I made became nearly automatic. Hunter was always by my side as I handled all the bureaucratic issues while Fifi and Ace helped me organize a small reception for those who had known my mom and wanted to pay their last respects.I knew most of them.
