HUNTER

“The number you are trying to reach is currently unavailable…”

I frowned at the screen and disconnected. Catherine's phone had been off for more than an hour. Ferro told me she was visiting her mother at the hospital, so I figured that perhaps her battery died, and she might have not even noticed it. Still, the fact I couldn't make sure she was all right placed me on the edge.

A part of me was ready to leave the meeting, go to the hospital, and find out why she didn't answer her phone, but I couldn't. Not with everything that had happened in the last few hours. So for now, I had to pretend I was satisfied with Ferro's “She's fine. She's in her mother's room, and there are no threats around.”

The moment Fabrizio Grasso had left my office, my instincts ordered me to run after him and end that son of a bitch, but I would have been a fool not to check that damn name first. Especially since we knew this guy was in the group that had tried to poison Catherine at the banquet.

So Grasso is giving good information. But how is he getting it? I just don’t believe he can be that savvy to know all these people. Because it almost Rodion knew Hunter was coming

With no time to waste, Rowan and I gathered whatever we could carry out of the apartment and stormed to the hallway. Enzo guided us through the old corridors, once probably used by the construction workers. They were dusty and barely stable, but they did the trick. It took us a few minutes, but we finally managed to escape without being noticed by the police. We were lucky… but considering everything that had happened earlier, I would rather call this occurrence not an absolute disaster. “That was a close call,” Rowan panted as we rushed back to the car, dropping everything we carried into the trunk. “It was.” I jumped behind the wheel, starting the engine as soon as Rowan placed his ass on the passenger's seat. Rowan studied me. No doubt he saw my clenched jaw and fingers curled around the wheel in a death grip. “Why do you think he had all those pictures of Catherine?” I shook my head and stepped on the gas. “No idea. It looked like someone followed Catherine around for weeks.”

CATHERINESomething soft and warm coated my body. Then strong hands cupped my head, lifting it. My eyes didn't open right away. Perhaps I was too tired to open them. I didn't know how long I had cried before curling up on the sofa and falling asleep.Someone stroked my hair, the touch gentle and slow. Maybe I should have opened my eyes by now, but nothing about that touch seemed alarming, and I… I might have needed some comfort. The stroking continued. I inhaled a familiar scent, and a faint smile tugged at my lips. Then my eyes opened. I blinked a few times before the blur of the scantily illuminated room turned into recognizable shapes. Now I knew my head was resting on Hunter's lap while he stroked my hair. I shifted to lie on my back and looked up, meeting his gaze. “Hi,” I whispered.“Doctor Sinclair told me everything,” he said, a heavy rasp in his voice. “I'm sorry I couldn't get here sooner.”I rose to sit and combed my hair with my fingers. “I'm not giving up, and neither is m

HUNTERI watched Catherine's throat work on a swallow, her face turning pale. “I want to assure you that you'll be safe there. I won't let anything happen to you.”She drew a deep breath and smiled wryly. “I just… This man… Grasso gives me the creeps. I know he cannot hurt me because I'm your wife, but I still remember the way he looked at me… like he couldn't wait to break me apart.”My jaw clenched. I wished I could tell her this man would die soon, but I knew I would have to let this son of a bitch live longer than he deserved. Lying to her was the last thing I wanted, but I knew she wouldn't understand why I'd made this deal, why I signed it with blood, and why I'd agreed to mark her as the price.I forced my lips to stretch, forming a weak smile as I cupped her cheeks. “I will keep you safe,” I promised. “Grasso's days are numbered. If everything goes smoothly tonight, he might not live longer than a week.”Her eyes widened. “And what's happening tonight?”“Among the documents we

“This isn't a rescue mission,” Rowan reminded me. “I don't even know how we would transport all those people somewhere safe without being noticed. And where would we take them? To Lanaro?”I breathed in slowly, hoping to clear my mind, but my thoughts were too hectic. Too many things could go wrong, and yet…“We should retreat,” Rowan convinced. “There's nothing we can do here. As fucked up as it is, those cunts inside are the only ones who can help those people now.”Cries and moans echoed through the warehouse. They were suffering, begging, some ready to end their lives just to stop the pain. My insides twisted. There were more than thirty people, and most of them could die. I doubted those fuckers would have cared. We could take the guards out. If I ordered my teams closer, we could kill them one by one, but it couldn't be done without any collateral damage. In this case, doubtless, there would be many casualties. More would die if we didn't cut out those drugs from their bodies in

CATHERINEA knock on the door caused my body to jolt. I was up on my feet in a heartbeat and ran to open the door a second later. Sergio, the new maggiordomo, stood in the corridor, his face pale. “There was an occurrence I believed you should be informed about immediately,” he said, nervously correcting his tie.Icy shivers licked the nape of my neck. “Hunter,” I breathed out.He nodded tensely. “Unexpectedly, the place where Mr. Thorne went turned out to be a kind of a trap.”Air escaped my lungs in a rush. I stumbled back, my body shivering. “Is Hunter… Is he…”Sergio's dark brown eyes studied me for a moment, then his expression softened. He cautiously stepped inside the room and closed the door behind him. “I was informed that Mr. Thorne is alive, although I do not know any details.”I pressed a hand to my chest, fearing that my heart might try to burst out. “Do you know what happened?” I managed.Sergio scratched his short, dark gray beard as if needing a moment to decide what t

HUNTERFabio surveyed the stitches on the side of my stomach and a purple and blue area stretching across my ribs. Then he looked at me, grimacing. “I could give you something for the pain, you know?”I shook my head. “I can't take anything that will dull my senses.”His lips formed a thin line. “As your doctor, I advise you not to go. I know you're not going to listen to me, but I still need to say it.”I breathed out a laugh. “Your concern for my comfort is touching. I'm almost surprised you care at all.”He shot me a look. “I wouldn't call it a concern. I merely don't like my patients dying.”I rolled my eyes. “I'm not going to die. You've just patched me up. I'm fine.”“You have a hole in your fucking stomach, which is barely beginning to heal. You have a fractured rib and a rather large cut on your leg, which you failed to mention to your wife about. I'd say you're anything but FINE.” He frowned and folded his arms over his chest.I studied him, grinning. “You DO care about me.”

CATHERINEMy breath caught in my throat. I tried to control my expression, but it was hard not to feel intimidated by the man who stood in front of us—Vito Cartelli. The resemblance between him and Dante was undeniable. He certainly was Dante's older version, but where Dante hid his viciousness under a carefully crafted mask, his father proudly exposed it in every sharp line of his face.Vito kept his eyes on his nephew, his lips twitching into something between a snarl and a smirk. Then he rolled back his shoulders and shifted his gaze to me. A cold flare appeared in his eyes, and his thin lips stretched into a grin. “I don't believe we've met. I'm Vito Cartelli.”He stretched out his hand, waiting for me to do the same. The last thing I wanted was to shake hands with the man responsible for killing Hunter's parents, but everything we did here was an act, a game we tried to play the best we could. So I let my lips curve into a soft smile as I extended my hand toward his.“I'm Catheri

  • All Because I Kissed a Stranger   Correcting the Deal

HUNTERI knew this was just a matter of time before Fabrizio Grasso found me. I merely finished my conversation with Luca when I caught that fucker staring at me from the corner of the hall. I studied him, expecting to find signs of shock in his expression. I saw none. Perhaps he was slightly restless but not surprised to see me alive. That only made me wonder how much he knew. Did he hide his emotions that well? Or perhaps he was no more than a dog following someone else's commands and knew nothing about the bombs?Slowly, he walked over, a faint smirk dancing on his lips. “I can only assume you checked the name you got from me the last time.”The cockiness in his tone turned my blood into molten lava. That fucker either had a death wish or truly knew nothing about the trap. Of course, this could be his trick to make me wonder, to make me hesitate… But somehow I doubted he possessed such brilliant acting skills. When I remained silent, he inched closer and lowered his voice to a whis

CATHERINEI had a dream. I was running through a dark tunnel. Shouts and rough grunts echoed behind me. I couldn't understand them. I only knew that if I stopped, I would die. So I kept running, even though my lungs burned and my muscles turned into stone. I was cold. I was hopeless. I was alone…‘You can stop now, Catherine,’ someone's voice coaxed. ‘You can go back.’The voice sounded familiar, although it was etheric and breathy. It didn't seem to come from one place. It vibrated around me. It pierced through me. I wasn't even sure if it came from the tunnel or I heard it in my mind.‘Catherine, stop.’ The sound was gentle, pleasant, and yet filled with strength and confidence.I slowed my pace, then dug my heels into the cold ground. “Mom?” I whispered, looking around as if the voice could somehow materialize.‘Go back,’ she said. ‘He's waiting for you.’Hot tears gathered in my eyes. “He?” I croaked.‘It's over, Catherine.’ A warm smile filled every note. ‘Go there. A hand on my shoulder jerked me awake. Wincing in discomfort, I straightened up in my seat and blinked, adjusting my vision. The sympathetic smile on Lazar's face told me I must have looked like shit. His eyes drifted to the side of the bed where I held Catherine's hand.“No changes, I see,” he muttered.I looked at his sleeping great-niece and shook my head. Then I turned to him and cleared my throat. “The doctors say this might take a while before she wakes up.”The night she had gotten shot, I'd nearly lost my mind. Luckily, Lazar's doctors had taken care of her immediately. Ironically, the shot might have been the thing that saved her. The massive blood loss had lessened the Pink Opium's effect, and after the blood transfusion, the poisonous drug had left her body.Lazar fixed his eyes on me. “But… she will wake up.” I wasn't sure whether it was a statement or a question, but I still nodded. A sliver of relief relaxed his features, but then he clenched his fists. “I should have pr

My finger turned heavier, curling on the trigger as I imagined his brain splattered all over this fucking corridor. But I wasn't the only one feeling bloodthirst. Dante wanted to kill me just as badly; I saw it in his rage-burning eyes. He tried to mask it with cold amusement, but I could nearly taste the fury radiating from him.“Is she inside?” he purred, jerking his chin at the ajar-open door to the storage. “Such a stubborn little thing, isn't she? She's dying because of that stubbornness.”Every fiber within me filled with lethal calm. “You did this to her? You gave her the Pink Opium?”The fucker smiled, triggering a new urge. No. He wouldn't die from a single bullet. He deserved to be skinned alive and torn to fucking little pieces. He lifted his gun, aiming at my head. “She will die within an hour. The latest booster works that way. Although, I have to admit she used it well. Did she tell you she killed five of ours until the initial effect wore off?” Cold laughter slipped free

HUNTER“Explain to me again, why do we trust this guy?” Rowan grunted as we marched through the tunnel.“We don't trust him,” I corrected. “We're taking a necessary risk.”Rowan glanced at Remo and Ferro as if hoping they would back him up. Luckily for them, they kept their mouth shut. Rowan, however, chose otherwise. “This looks like a trap. Why would this guy, who's apparently Lagunov's general, help us get into their fortress through some backdoor? It doesn't make sense!”I gave him a wry smile but didn't slow my pace. “I don't get it either. Then again, he had a chance to kill me twice. He didn't even try. Maybe he actually wants to switch sides.”Rowan gave me a look. “He killed Arianna without remorse.”“Perhaps he can't work around every order Lagunov gives him,” I reasoned. “Or maybe he simply hated Arianna.”“That I can imagine,” Remo commented dryly.Rowan lined up with me. “Basically, you dragged us into those tunnels because he wrote something about the documents signed by

Twenty-four hours had passed without Dante showing up in my prison cell, but that hadn't made me relax even for a second. I had been on constant alert, listening to every sound coming from the corridor. My muscles tensed every time I heard someone approaching my door, but I knew that I finally had to get some sleep…I'd used Maxim's trick to block the handle, but even then I allowed myself to rest for merely three hours. Drifting into a deep sleep wasn't an option, although I realized my body would soon run on fumes. My anxieties threatened to devour me, but each time I was close to panic, Maxim's words appeared in my mind. “They're coming, Catherine,” I mumbled to myself. “Just hold on a little longer.”A few more hours had passed, and I was slowly losing the fight to keep my eyes open. I was on the verge of falling into unawareness when the sound of heavy footsteps made me jerk up to my feet. Barefoot, I rushed to unblock the door. A second later, the door slammed open, and three me

My whole body began to rattle, and a high-pitched tone rang in my ears. It was a struggle not to fall apart as I silently prayed Hunter was alive. But if they had attacked the estate in Scarsdale, how many people had they killed? What about Gianna, Ferro, Enzo, Remo, or Rowan?“Thank you, Maxim.” Aleks Lagunov's icy laugh tore me out of my frantic thoughts. “That's great news,” he crooned as his eyes shifted to me. “Not so great news for you, I'm afraid. You see, Catherine, I can assure you that no one will come for you. Tomorrow, we will attack the Fedorov's estate and crush Lazar's little army. We know more than a little about your plans…” He pointed at one of the Italians sitting by the table. “Mr. Messino was kind enough to share more than a few details.”My hands fisted into tight balls. “Fucking traitor,” I strained through my teeth.Messino glared at me, but Lagunov laughed. “Such feistiness… Just like Katerina.” Then he locked his eyes on me, a grim smile stretching his lips.

CATHERINEI couldn't sleep. Drifting into unawareness in this place was more terrifying than Dante's presence in my room. I was exhausted, but my adrenaline levels were high enough to keep me constantly awake.Nearly every sound coming from the corridor made me flinch. The heavy steps brought chills down my spine, and the deep, cold laughter caused my stomach to roil. Dante hadn't visited me again so far, but I knew he would come and demand my answer. As if he had given me a choice…Three times a day someone walked into my room, bringing me food—mostly a slice of bread and water, sometimes an apple. Those servants never looked at me or spoke except for barking out a few commands. They had uncuffed my hand twice. Only for a minute, and only so I could take care of my physiological needs. Then I was cuffed again.I began to think I might lose my mind should I stay in this room and in this bed another day. My whole body began to ache, and I spent hours trying to shift the chain to make m

“Where are the fucking darts?!” Remo shouted through the communicator. “I've literally stuffed those fuckers with bullets, and they're still attacking the gates!”“Get a grip. You're not the only one pissed off by those zombie cunts,” Rowan hissed as he released another empty clip. All my men had been trying to fend off the attack at our gates for over an hour now. So far, the defenses we had installed around the estate turned out to be unbreachable, but those drug-fueled soldiers were relentless in their attempts to bring our fences down.“Enzo said the darts are on the way,” I said, aiming my gun at one of the bloodshot-eyed fuckers charging at the western gate. “In the meantime, aim for the heads.”Most of my suit was coated with blood. I hadn't had the time to change, and those renegades didn't die easily. Blood formed a red mist around our borders, and countless bodies lined the ground. Their losses were far greater than ours, but they kept coming, kept attacking…“Guys, I'm runn

  • All Because I Kissed a Stranger   Desperate

HUNTERTwenty-six hours passed since Catherine had been abducted, and we still couldn't locate where she was kept. Potentially, she could have been in one of over thirty estates owned by Aleks Lagunov. So far, we were trying to narrow that list down, but excluding each location took too much time…After more than a few hours of useless quarrels, Lazar and I had finally gathered all our allies under one roof—my roof. Certainly, this agreement hadn't eliminated the mutual hostility, which currently satiated the air in the meeting room so densely, breathing had become a struggle. Well, at least none of them had chosen to resort to violence… so far.We all sat at the large oval table with Lazar and me on the opposite sides. We exchanged meaningful looks, then Lazar cleared his throat, drawing everyone's attention. “My spies confirmed our previous suspicions… The Lagunov family's old estate was abandoned some time ago,” he said. “That means the renegades' main headquarters has to be elsewh
