A hundred whips and my skin feels torn, but not my determination to love Max. I see mom, step into the dungeon, as she bends on her knees letting the straps on my arms lose.

“A princess listens, they don't rebel”, she says. Her voice is laced with venom.

“That beggar won't give you anything except pleasure, but to live a life like a queen you need to marry a king. You can keep him as your concubine, someone you can fuck, but not your life partner.”, her eyes are calm as she says this.

How could she say this? I love him, and he deserves the world from me. He is my equal, someone that will stand by my side, and not below me. And concubine. I can never turn him to that, even though he would be mine forever, a concubine

A new day should start with new feelings, new opportunities, and new chances. Yet, my mind still wanders on everything that had happened in my life. Everything wrong to make my love life a distant memory. I huff the tiredness, blowing it out through my mouth in long deep breaths as Sherlin wraps me in some dress she thinks fits for the event. I don't want to look at myself through the mirror, because all I see in my eyes is the failure - the failure to save Max from me.And I say, I will protect him from the world? My mind mirths at the stupidity of my heart, deciding to take over the actions in its hand.Putting myself in a mask of the queen with everything going perfect and fine, I swipe down myself from the flight of stairs to the grounds of the farmer.

I throw the curtains of the healer's chambers open to let the fresh airflow in the room. Replacing the tables with blooming- jasmines dipped in night fairy concoctions to accentuate their smells, I place them all over the room to overpower the scent of the ointment that fills the room. Adria hates the smell of ointment. Whenever she used to study medicine she always complained how the smell of ointment makes her feel sick and dizzy, and she hoped that the entire space could smell like blooming night jasmine so she can learn medicine for fun. The whiff of jasmines covers all the walls, and I feel satisfied with the way the room smells. Readjusting the fire in the chambers I ensure that the room is at a comfortable temperature before looking over my shoulders to the figure lying on the bed, covered in white linen. My lips curl as the room fills with the beats of her shallow breaths indi

Lycan’s eyes linger on mine as Max dresses the wounds on my side. I could feel the jealousy oozing through her orbs, as she tries to maintain the smile. I shouldn’t let her feel like that, especially now that I know they both like each other. When I came into consciousness and saw them making out, I did feel bad, but Lycan saved my life, and I should at least make sure she doesn't feel bad because of me. Max and I are friends, and from now on we will always remain only friends. I let the gown slide down as Max finishes the dressing. Securing my dagger around my thigh and sword in the satchel I drag myself limping towards the court. It was the trial for the man that stabbed me. My feet clink on the marble of the court amidst the crowd of villagers and court men. Every eye looks up at me in sympathy, cooing at the wound visible through the sheer ends of my gown. I meet their eyes smiling, assuring them the wound doesn't affect me. Honestly, it doesn't, not more than the pain that I fe

Papers were brought in to sign for the official concubine statement. A statement that says nothing but tells the person signing it that they now are giving up their entire life to someone who they do not even love. That they will be a mere piece of meat that the royal person will enjoy, and they do not even get to say no to whatever the demands they put forward to. A ridiculous contract that binds every king’s love to them, when they show off their wives at meetings. Azrael sits across me, shaking under the gaze of Max that towers him, seething with anger. Max’s knuckles turn white at the impact with which he clutches the sword on his belt, but I see him relax as Lycan places a hand on his shoulder. Perfect. I roll my eyes at the encounter, finishing signing a hundred rules that bind Azrael and me together, or rather a hundred rules that state Azrael will now be at my mercy forever. I cross my legs slumping down on the chair. The wound hurts my insides, rendering me weak every few h

The bushes along the palace walls rustle the black silhouette in them, crawling on its knees. The cat eyes scan through the palace grounds, keeping a close look on the Queen, and her now concubine. The silhouette shuffles, the rustle blending with the wind, as the person climbs towards the west wing of the palace. The west wing is full of secrets. Dirty secrets from the royals, and their ancestors. The same black silhouette makes its way down through the grey, brown walls walking to the room at the farthest right corner. Wood creeks open, the moon casting its silver over the person sitting in the middle. The wine glass shines with clear liquid, as the stench of lavender and lilies fills the room rendering anyone heady. “What’s the news?”, the person in the middle croons, tapping their pinky nail on the glass. A naked body lies beside, covered with whip marks, tied with leather straps to the bedframe, almost lifeless on the sheets. “No… No news. They were just talking about Evander

I lie on the bed draped in a transparent white gown that leaves very little to the imagination. The sweetheart neckline cuts low popping almost half of my breast out, as the thigh-high cuts on both ends fall away from my legs. I prop on my elbows twisting my body in a slow sensual turn, lying on my stomach. My cheeks rest on the linen sheet, the slight red tint on them transferring to the sheets. I run my lips on my bottom lip, curling them in my mouth to leave a shiny layer of moisture, as my eyes follow Max around the room. He lights the candles letting the light from them fill the room, of my east chambers. Raising my legs, I curl my toes gulping through the rising heat. The muscles in his back flex, with my every moment, and even though he pretends not to care, the protruding veins in his neck tell me he is aware of my presence in the room. —---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Crickets buzz in the surroundings as I

The feel of her lips and her taste still lingers in my mouth after twelve hours of sleep. Last night was undoubtedly the best day, night, month, year of my life, and I want to shout to the world that the Queen they all admire belongs to me just me. I look at Adria lying on her bed, in nothing but her long night slip dress. Last night, she passed out between our kisses, and I carried her in here as my desires ached to wake her up and hold her in my arms forever. And as if the deities are playing a game, she looks ethereal today. Beautiful than she had ever been. Her cheeks are flushed from the alcohol, and her long eyelashes cast a shadow on the clear texture of her skin. I prop on my elbow taking in her features, tracing them down my fingers memorizing them in every muscle. Like I can sculpt her even with my eyes closed. I draw my thumb over her bottom lip, as it escapes - bouncing, hitting over her top lip, and my head spins in ecstasy. My head is unable to wrap around the truth t

Max was not joking about the concubine rules. I checked the files we signed, and the rule was overtly mentioned in one of the hundred pages that were placed to protect the rights of the concubines and to make sure they deserve a proper status from every person in the kingdom. I frown at the papers in my hand, as the statement of the rule taunts me. But what affects me the most is the cunning smile of Max standing beside me as he peeks through the writings. I squint my eyes, elbowing him in the stomach, as he groans with pain attracting the attention of both Lycan and Azrael sitting on the opposite side of the room. I roll my eyes at the setup or the game that fate likes to play with me. When I thought everything will be going all right between me and Max, now that I have confessed - we are determined to fall in love with each other all over again. I don't regret it. In fact, I love the idea of loving each other without any underlying reasons, or force, but Max has taken this punishm

Every day Max gets up to ask only one question, “How do you know we were going to have a baby girl”, and I just shrug saying, “Mother instincts.”, and he pouts like a child folding his hands over his chest. It's been a year since I am married to this person pouting beside me. The day I came into consciousness, he pulled me down to the temple in the middle of the village, and in the witness of hundreds of people in my kingdom, he married me. There were no huge rituals, customs, or grandiose spread along with the city, and yet it was the happiest day of my life. Since, then it’s been like I am having a second skin that walks, sleeps, and eats by me every second of the day. It was hard to explain to the entire kingdom, what went down in the palace, but I was happy they accepted everything along with me and Max. The coronation was no different. As soon as I was healed, the kingdom decided to crown me as the Queen, and I made sure to give Max, a position that made him stand as my equal

“They are going to kill Adria today”, the healer says as I raise the dagger to pierce into his body. I freeze in my spot listening to his words, as my heart goes into frantic actions. “But, I can help you. I know where they will be taking her. I can help you”, he says and I yank his body up from the ground. “If you lie to me once, I will make sure this dagger settles deep into your heart the very moment.” Threat spills through my words, as his body trembles in my arms. The healer guides me to the dungeon of the palace, “She is in there?”, he says. Dragging his body beside me, I enter the eerie gravel-littered space. I could see trails of blood that run along the floor as if someone was dragged mercilessly on the ground. Something settles along my throat, not letting me breathe properly, as I walk towards the blood-stained floor. As I walk into the depths of the place, I could hear echoes of crying and laughter. Different kinds of heartbeats beat along the walls, but the nearest t

“The yellow potion killed him”“Max, tell me it's a lie and I will believe you”, I say clutching his palm in my hand. The heat radiating from them was comforting, and I nuzzle into his skin to seek comfort from everything that was going on. He pulls his hand away from mine, raising the bottle of the yellow potion to his eye level. A gulp resonates from his throat, his proximity to me letting me hear every tick of his heart. My eyes never leave him, they take in every moment of his muscle. I know he was thinking something, what exactly was never a question because I was waiting to hear he was not guilty. His eyes suddenly trail to the door, as a silhouette shuffles along the window, and he places a hand on my lips. Dipping closer to my ear he whispers, “It’s not me, but act like it's me and throw me out of the chamber.”, he says. I pull back looking at his face relief and confusion playing a weird blend on me. His eyes look at me softly and warmly, telling me he would explain thing

“Yes, she is telling the truth. Evander loved me, he adored me, treated me like the queen I am”, a glint of madness crosses my mother's face as she talks. “But, he was a mere servant who forgot his boundaries. Your father was never available for me Adria, he never used to look past the strategies of war. Even when he needed to satisfy himself, he used to go around hiring women and concubines. I was never enough for him because I couldn't give him a son, but trust me Adria it wasn't my fault, it was your dad. He was incompetent.”, she says as her eyes grow frantic looking everywhere around the room. “Ask anyone? Anyone.”, she says breaking into laughter. “Funny he could never even impregnate one of his concubines, and he used to blame me for not giving him a son”, laughing like a maniac she shuffles to the ground sitting with her head in her hands. “That’s when I found Evander. First I forced him, then blackmailed him in Adria’s and Max’s name, and then when I showed him my broken

“Yes, I love you Adria”, he laughs shaking his head in disappointment as tears roll down his cheeks. “I started following you two years ago. Your every move, your every habit, your every need, and in a blink of an eye I knew your strengths and weakness. I saw how you held yourself high before men, confident and not bowing to them. I saw how you enjoyed it when they feared you, especially after they underestimate you. I saw how you wanted to carve your respect in everyone's mind. But I also saw how you were running from your own mind.”, the tears clutch onto the edge of his lips, as he looks deep into my eyes. “You were running from the one person you love. Eyes speak Adria, and your’s were the loudest when you saw Max, admiring him from afar. And I always wondered why you could never see my brother with those eyes. The dots never connected, if you loved Max, then why did you fool Evander”, dipping his head back a chuckle escapes his lips. “And guess what my answer was just tucked i

I scatter forward but the splinters dig in my skin pulling me back to place. “Oh, look at the Queen all helpless”, mom says as she walks beside Azrael her eyes scattered with a glint at the misery she sees. The phosphene in the air is cut, a sudden cool spreading all over my body relieving me of the pain. I eye the ground breathing at the dwindled pain when I see feet stop mere inches from me. My chin is pinched between fingers so hard that it would probably leave a bruise, as they jerk my face up to look at the person standing before me. His fingers leave my chin. Tracing the cuts on my shoulder blade, Azrael presses his fingers onto the wound, and a hiss leaves from between my lips. “Does it hurt? Tell them sweetheart”, he says, with

I place my hand over my stomach, as my eyes take in the flatness of it through the mirror. It is just impossible to wrap my head around the possibility that there is a human being growing in there, and that very small being has the flesh of the one person I love the most in the world. A smile crosses my face, the idea of me growing bigger and bulkier with a person in me sounding like a ridiculous tale. My hand caresses the region over the fabric, anticipating what size it will grow, how large, what will I look like, and how will Max… hold me?Will Max ever hold me? My senses wander with the question. The idea of pregnancy is not that absurd, what disturbs me the most is whether I will be able to give this small bean the life they deserve. A twinge of guilt holds me, nervousness picking up at my senses as I think about Max. Something seems off, what exactly is out of the question. But there is an inner voice that somehow yells at me, that something very bad is about to knock on my d
