Emelia's POV

"It's all your fault! Grandpa wouldn't be so mad at us if it wasn't for you provoking him like a spoiled brat!" Lily screamed in my face.

The tumultuous feelings in my heart definitely weren't helping the thoughts I was having now about throwing Lily across the table. I had to remind myself about being in grandpa's home, and how I definitely didn't want to add more fuel to the fire.

Clearly, Lily had zero respect for grandpa's home, but I did. So, I decided to keep my mouth shut despite her hostility. Instead, I took a sip of my wine and ignored her.

Lily continued to provoke me, dissatisfied with the fact that I knew how to regulate my own emotions. "Are you proud of yourself for ruining my relationship with both Victor and grandpa?! Are you not ashamed of yourself?!"

My gaze drifted towards my mother-in-law to see her glaring at me with piercing eyes. It seemed as if she was letting Lily do the talking for her since they shared the same brain.

"Are you done?" I looked ba

Victor's POV"How could you break your promises to me? To Emelia?!" Grandpa Antonio snapped his eyes to me that flickered with anger. "After all this time, you're still choosing Lily? Do you not realize how grave of a mistake you're making?!""I haven't broken any promises to you or Emelia! You know nothing about what I've had to endure for your approval and for hers. I've sacrificed too much for you to think I don't know what the hell I'm doing!" I fired back. "But what you're not going to do is speak ill of Lily as if she did anything to deserve your hatred!"My grandfather wasn't always like this towards Lily growing up. At one point, he actually loved her like a granddaughter. But something changed when we got older.I always thought that maybe it was losing grandma that made him become that way. Ever since she died, a piece of him went with her. His heart, his soul, his mental health…Coincidentally, though, Lily had gotten into her accident trying to save my life. And I thought t

Emelia's POV "I knew it! I fucking knew it!" I yelled at Victor. "You're nothing but a LIAR and I can't believe I fell for it!"My heart pounded in my chest like a wild animal trying to break out of a cage. The ringing from Victor's words was too much for me to bear as I ran down the stairs and out the door.Everything I knew about my marriage was a fucking lie. The acts of kindness, the beautiful words, the stolen kisses—everything was for nothing.I was more than nothing but a replacement—a placeholder for Lily.Despite how I was considering divorce, there was still just a tiny sliver of hope that I was trying to hold onto. I wanted so badly to believe that maybe I wasn't a complete idiot in trying to save our marriage. But here I was—a fucking clown in the middle of a packed circus."Emelia, wait please!" Victor called out for me.I stood out in the middle of the courtyard in front of grandpa's mansion. My eyes stung with the tears I'd shed, and my legs felt like they were going to

Emelia's POV"What happened, Emmy? Come inside and tell me all about it." Alexis helped me to my feet and sat me down on the couch.Once I was in the safe confines of her home, all I could do was sit there and cry. My heart had finally been split in two, with each piece shredded and scattered through every place Victor and I once shared. There was nothing left but an empty void."I left Victor." I finally admitted after crying for what felt like hours. "The marriage was nothing but a sham. Victor lied to me about everything. I was nothing but a stand-in for Lily, just waiting to be replaced. He didn't want me, what we had wasn't out of love…""Em, I'm so so sorry." She placed her hand on mine. "Tell me everything. That weight you're carrying is not meant for one person to handle."I took a deep breath as I prepared myself to recount everything to Alexis. She was right, I wasn't meant to bear this alone. It made me so grateful to have a best friend like her. Especially now, I needed som

Victor's POVEverything around me moved in slow motion as I dragged myself up the stairs of my grandfather's mansion. The colors of the world started to fade away, and there was a giant hole in my chest where my heart should've been.Emelia left me.I went inside and ignored my mother and Lily completely, even as they tried to get my attention. Was grandpa right? Had I been mistaken this entire time?As I climbed up the stairs to grandpa's office, one of his butlers stood in my way. I tried to move past him but he mirrored my movements."I need to go talk to him, so please get out of—""Apologies, Mr. Russo, but Sir Russo has told us that you are no longer permitted to speak to him at this time moving forward.""What are you talking about? No, I need to go see—""Sir Russo has made it clear that you are to reconcile with Mrs. Emelia or you are prohibited from returning to this residence."I stood wide-eyed in disbelief. Grandpa was cutting me off completely unless I made up with Emelia

Victor's POVI stared into Lily’s eyes, hoping to find the answers to all the questions that burned within me.“What’s wrong?” Lily shifted uncomfortably beneath my gaze."Emelia is still my wife." I said with a resoluteness that almost erased the doubt that weighed in my heart. "I can't just let her leave! What will that say about me as a husband if I don't fulfill my vows to her? I have a duty to fulfill!"The implications of Emelia's words left me hollow, but I had to believe that there was some hope left. Things weren't absolute—there was still another chance to explain myself.I couldn't just let her leave. Not when I made a promise to be with her until 'death do us part'; through sickness and in health; through good and bad.The thought of all the promises I made to Emelia steeled my resolve. I had to find a way to make things right; to make her understand that things were truly different—and that what really mattered was that we were husband and wife.I had a duty to make sure E

Emelia's POV"There's no way! I'm pregnant?!"I paced around in Alexis's bathroom for what seemed like hours. The pregnancy stick laid flat on the counter, and I kept my eyes on it like a hawk. Once the second alarm on my phone went off, I picked up the pregnancy test to confirm that I wasn't hallucinating the double line of confirmation."Emmy… It's only supposed to take fifteen minutes for the results to read. You've been in there for thirty." Alexis called out.I opened the door and turned the pregnancy test towards Alexis so she could see the little screen.Once she was able to see it for herself, she squealed and pulled me in for an embrace. "Oh, congratulations, Emelia! You're actually pregnant!"Her excitement was palpable and normally it would've spread to me, too. Both of us should've been squealing, jumping for joy, and starting a list of potential aunty nicknames for the child to call her one day.Except… I felt none of that. This couldn't be more horrible timing for news li

Emelia's POVI was silent on the drive back to Alexis's home since I was still in shock. The strong heartbeat of my unborn child echoed in my mind. It was all so clear—I was having a baby! It was such a surreal feeling to know that I was becoming a mother.Alexis's enthusiastic voice pulled me from my thoughts. Luckily, she was talking enough for us both, but I figured I needed to be a good friend and listen to what she said."You know, your pregnancy gives me a good reason to clean out that spare room!" Alexis's smile was wide. "I've always wanted to decorate a little nursery!""And what ideas did you have in mind?" I asked."Something to do with animals for sure! Hippos, tigers, and elephants; all of them! Obviously in an art style that's proper for children. I wasn't sure if I wanted decals or to have them painted on, but I wanted the walls to be a light green." Alexis tapped at her steering wheel. "Plus, I figured that animals are loved by both boys and girls. It'll work out whenev

Emelia's POVThe thoughts in my mind ran at a million miles an hour.Should I tell Victor that he was about to be a father? Should I tell him about how I had my first prenatal check-up, and how the baby's heartbeat was strong? Should I tell him about how I was already ten weeks along?Even though I was planning to divorce him, I didn't want my child to grow up without their father. He may not have been a good husband, but what if he was a better father?A part of me didn't want to make such a rash decision based on the possibility of him maybe being a better father than husband. At the end of the day, I knew that if—or rather, when—I decided to divorce him, even if we amicably agreed to become co-parents, that meant my child would have to be raised by Lily, too.The thought alone boiled my blood. Her manipulativeness would've extended to this sweet life growing inside me, and the last thing I wanted for the unborn child was for them to be tainted.Just as I was about to give Victor a

Emelia's POVI was slipping in and out of consciousness. The weight of the unbearable pain in my stomach and in my heart was too overwhelming.Lily's psychotic and selfish actions were possibly costing me the life of my baby. I could only hope and pray that everything was okay. They had to be okay, right? But what made matters worse was to see the desperation and concern on Victor's face—like he'd forgotten all the lies and her blatant manipulation. If I had gone through with the divorce sooner, left his company when Alexis told me to, and just let those two be together, none of this would be happening. My baby would have a better chance to live, and I'd get the chance to show them the love we both deserved. It felt like I was being robbed. When I finally came to, I was surrounded by white, sterile walls. Emelia's POV"Lily! What happened?! Are you alright?!"When my vision finally cleared, I craned my head to the side and saw Victor next to Lily. He had his hands around her as if to support and shield her from the rest of the world.Meanwhile, I was laid out on the ground—exposed and vulnerable. Despite being surrounded by so many people, at that moment, I'd never been so alone."Oh, Victor! It—" Lily hissed through her teeth. "It hurts so much! My leg!"Victor carefully rose to his feet with his arms under Lily. "Try and get up, okay? How bad does it hurt? Can you try—""STOP!" Lily wailed. "I think it's really broken this time! I can't stand it! It hurts!""It's okay, I got you." Victor reassured her. "Sit back down, okay?" He then looked out into the crowd. "Quick standing there, somebody, and get a damn wheelchair!""Victor…" I called out weakly. However, he was too busy having his eyes fixated on Lily's leg to notice anyone else but her."Emelia!" "Get it through your thick skull that none of this is your business to begin with!""It is my concern when you're trying to use whatever tactic you can to prevent your divorce from Victor!" Lily shrieked like a madwoman.Dealing with Lily's incessant need to be in my business was beyond exhausting. There had to have been more to life than simply butting into the concerns of others. Did she not want to see the world? Take on a damn hobby?Did she ever take time to take care of herself? They rhetorical questions, of course. I knew what the answers were. Our colleagues who had just entered the building turned to look at us and the unfolding commotion.I simply glared at Lily and shoved my way past her and made my way to the elevators. It was irritating how she seemed adamant on making a scene in front of others. Hopefully to everyone else, she still looked just as crazy as she actually was.She d

Emelia's POV"Good morning, Miss Emelia." The nurse's assistant greeted me with a warm smile. "How are you doing this morning?""Doing well." I winced slightly. "Although I do have a slight headache right now.""Hm, well, I'll have to talk to the doctor to see what we can get for you. Now that you're pregnant, there are certain painkillers you shouldn't be taking for the baby's health.""I understand.""Aside from that, have you been feeling or going through anything else?" She asked as she placed the blood pressure cuff around my arm."I've been feeling nauseous, although not to the point where I've been throwing up constantly.""Mostly during the morning or evening?""It just kind of depends, really."The nurse's assistant nodded as she took my blood-pressure and temperature. It felt weird not having Alexis with me, and once the assistant was done, I sent a quick text to her to tell her everything was okay and that I was at my check-up."Hm…" The assistant looked at her vital sign ma

Emelia's POV"P-please, d-don't leave me, Emmy… I c-can't l-lose you…"Victor mumbled those words repeatedly through hiccups and retches as if he was about to throw up. In his drunken state, he was in no condition to support himself, but I was lucky enough to have the bartender help me get him to the car. Especially since I had to be mindful of the growing life inside me, I couldn't afford to pull a muscle or anything."Thank you for contacting me, by the way." I said to the bartender."Of course, miss. I hope you have a good night. Drive safe."A wave of regret washed over me as I looked over at Victor passed out in the passenger seat of the car. His disheveled appearance and puffy eyes were almost unbearable to see.As I got into the car and buckled us up, Victor unexpectedly leaned his head against my shoulder. I couldn't lie that seeing him like this softened my heart, even though I'd intentionally hardened it to protect myself from him.It was pitiful to see him like this, and he'

Victor's POVThe disappointment and anger on Emelia's face was etched into my mind. It was almost haunting just how clear I could see it—and how I could still feel it. It made my heart ache so bad that I wasn't sure there was anything that could stop the pain. And what of Mason? This so-called friend of hers. I'd never met him once, and now they were on a first name basis?Where did she meet him?Who was he?Did they plan to meet each other tonight? Was there more to them than what they were leading me on to believe?Mason's shit-eating grin was enough to rekindle my anger that I thought I'd quelled since leaving. My suspicions were growing, but I had to believe that there was nothing between them or I'd go insane. If anything, Emelia's protective stance towards her so-called friend was what left me torn. She abandoned me and chose to protect another man over me—her husband.Had I really been so deserving of this mistreatment?Did she truly not care for me?With my mind and heart feeli

Emelia's POV"I'm so sorry..." I finally said once the chaos left in Victor's wake settled. "You didn't deserve that, Mason."Victor's jealous fit left a bad taste in my mouth and really soured my mood. He had no right being so angry and hostile towards a friend who had done nothing to him personally. It baffled me that he suddenly decided that his status as my husband was so important. Not to mention how hard he tried to enforce a boundary when he hadn't considered that when it came to Lily.Just the mere thought of her almost rekindled my anger I'd been trying to quell."Don't be sorry," Mason's smooth voice pulled me from my thoughts. His smile was warm and kind. "Your husband seems to have good intentions, even if his anger is rather misplaced.""Yeah, misplaced up his ass..." Alexis grumbled beside me.Mason chuckled. "Agreed." He then turned back to me. "Will you be okay?""I will be, thank you for asking." I nodded my head. "You truly handled that situation with a lot of grace,

Emelia's POV"What is he doing here?" Alexis hissed under her breath.I watched silently as Victor scanned the tea shop with a hint of something else in his eyes. Apprehension? Disgust?Regardless, he didn't seem to be in a particularly good mood.As his gaze settled on the shop's window, it was then that his eyes found mine. His stare was intense as he hurried into the small tea shop.Oh great. The door swung open as Victor's head snapped to where we were sitting. He looked at me just before his eyes widened on the man sitting across from me.Even from here, I could see his jaw flexed."Emelia, are you okay?" Victor approached me and ignored both Alexis and Mason. "When I came home and saw you weren't there, I got worried.""I'm fine." I replied curtly. "As you can see, I'm enjoying tea with friends. So, you can go home now."Victor's fixated on Mason and suddenly, the air had changed. "Friends, huh?"The atmosphere became so heavy it was hard to breathe. A sharpened knife couldn't cu
