Chapter 6

Author: Hauling Treasures
Emily took out her phone and sent Justin a message. “Stop by Villa One when you have a moment. Let’s settle things between us so you can go back to your precious first love.”

After hitting send, she prepared to leave the hospital.

“Miss Yates, may I speak with you for a moment?” Suddenly, Emma was beside her, having wheeled herself over without Justin in sight.

“We don’t really know each other,” Emily replied, feeling awkward.

“Miss Yates, I’ve just been away from Justin for three years. I wanted to ask you how he’s been and if he’s been eating and sleeping well. He couldn’t find me, so I’m sure he must’ve been terribly sad,” Emma said, her frail voice laced with a hint of smugness, as if she was savoring her importance to him.

“If you want to know, ask Justin directly.”

“He won’t tell me. He’s worried it would make me anxious.”

Emily saw no point in continuing the conversation and turned to leave.

Suddenly, behind her, Emma’s voice rose in a frantic shout, her tears streaming

Emily gripped the contract tightly, her anger burning inside her.Justin leaned back in his chair, his thin lips parting slightly as he spoke. His voice was cold and dripping with arrogance, as if he were granting her a favor. “These past three years have been hard on you. You’re an orphan, with no family or place to go. I’m willing to support you financially with sixty million a year.”He continued, “We’ll renew the contract every three years. If you behave and stay out of my and Emma’s way, I’ll keep you until you’re old. You can stay in this villa, but you’re not to show yourself in front of Emma again. I won’t be coming here anymore, and I won’t be with you.“As for what happened at the hospital today, I don’t care who was right or wrong. I don’t want a repeat of it.”His tone was cold and dismissive, as if her thoughts and dignity didn’t matter at all.By the time he finished, Emily’s anger was so intense it felt like a physical pain. Where did he get the nerve to think she w

Along with the bank transfer, a reminder popped up about a beachside villa trip she had booked. Emily had almost forgotten about it. She had planned a three-day, two-night getaway, hoping for some time with Justin by the sea. Back then, he had been so busy with work that he barely had any free time, and she had to sweet-talk him into agreeing. She had even picked a local spot to make it easier for him. But now, all the things she had prepared for that trip were gone and tossed out when she cleared her closet recently.Pulling herself out of her thoughts, Emily realized she didn’t need Justin to go. She could still enjoy the trip with Helen. Life would go on without him. “Helen, I’ve got a trip booked for a beachside villa. It’s three days, two nights, right here in the city. Wanna go?” Emily asked, rubbing her sleepy eyes as she stood there in her nightgown.“A trip?” Helen’s face lit up. “Absolutely! I’ll just skip a few classes,” she replied excitedly. “I mean, I’ll ask for

“Such a beautiful lady. May I have the pleasure of inviting you to dance this evening?” A man extended his hand to Emily, bowing slightly. He was impeccably dressed, every bit the gentleman.Downstairs, Emily had just been approached with a dance invitation. To a suspicious onlooker, it might have looked like she was trying to catch the eye of a wealthy man.“Isn’t that Miss Yates? What is she doing here...” Emma’s voice trailed off, as though she had uncovered some unspeakable secret. Emma wasn’t the only one who noticed. Justin and Zac stood on the balcony above, watching the entire exchange. They had also caught bits and pieces of the gossip circulating among the women downstairs. Zac raised an eyebrow, a smile forming as he watched the scene below, as if a thought had just clicked into place.Hadn’t Emily been pestering Justin about going on a trip? And could it have been to this very place, the Westhill Peninsula Villa? And now, seeing they had broken up and Justin had inv

“Hey, Justin, Zac!” Sean greeted enthusiastically.“Ah, it’s Sean,” Zac replied casually.Justin gave a quick nod in acknowledgment.Emily’s eyes widened in surprise. She glanced back at the young man. “Do they know each other?” she wondered.Zac caught her expression and offered an explanation. “The Whites, the Yates, and the Smiths, are some of the Lincourt city’s old families. We all go way back.”Emily understood now. “Of course,” she thought, “rich kids... no wonder he’s driving around recklessly in a luxury car.”Sean noticed her expression and, as if reading her thoughts, quickly spoke up, his tone carrying a hint of apology. “Miss Emily,” he said softly. The way he called her "Miss Emily" made everyone around pause in surprise.Emma, who had been lingering nearby, wasn’t happy about being ignored. She stepped a little closer to Justin, positioning herself so it looked almost as if he was holding her. She looked up at him with an affectionate smile, as if to assert her p

Justin stood on the sandy shore, his tall frame relaxed, but his expression indifferent. Out of Mr. Gibson’s line of sight, he cast a glance at Emily, his gaze tinged with subtle mockery and skepticism. He had no intention of interrupting Mr. Gibson’s enthusiasm to expose her so-called painting skills, even though he had rarely seen her paint back at Villa One.Sure, Emily could paint, and she was enrolled in the city’s most prestigious art school. But to him, that didn’t necessarily equate to talent or any natural gift. After all, he had paid her way in, so it wasn’t as if she had gotten there solely on her own abilities.Dancing was a different story. She had surprised him tonight with her grace, but painting? That was another matter entirely. He just couldn’t picture her as an artist, no matter how hard he tried.Emily met his gaze briefly, sensing the challenge and doubt behind it. It was as if he were daring her to continue this “artist” act. But she simply turned away, rolli

“So, she was out there flirting with other guys the whole time?” Justin thought. As Emily listened to Mr. Gibson, a hint of confusion crossed her face. She sensed something was off. Was Mr. Gibson trying to set her up with Justin? The mere thought sent a chill down her spine, and she quickly found an excuse to leave. She still had to find Helen and give her a piece of her mind.“Mr. Gibson, I have something I need to take care of, so I’ll have to excuse myself for now,” Justin said politely, as he watched Emily leave.Mr. Gibson chuckled and waved him off, as if encouraging him to follow. “Go on, you young folks should enjoy yourselves. Me, I’m too old for all that excitement,” he said with a grin.Justin nodded respectfully before stepping away from the beach. He quickly caught up to Emily in a hallway corner, grabbing her arm and spinning her around. Justin then pinned her in the shadowy corner of the hallway. They were alone.“Move!” Emily snapped. Sean grabbed Justin’s arm and yanked Emily’s wrist free from his grasp.Justin looked momentarily stunned, releasing her without a fight.Sean quickly pulled Emily behind him, stepping between them to shield her.“Bullying? Seriously?” Justin thought. She was the one who had slapped him. Who was bullying who here? And when did that even count as bullying?Back then, in those intimate moments with Emily, when things got passionate, was that bullying her? Those times he had been even more forceful making love to her, did that count as him bullying her?And what about the scratches she had left down his back? Was she bullying him then? Now she was huddled behind Sean, looking like she had been terribly wronged. What was that supposed to mean? Were she and Sean romantically involved now too?For the first time, Justin realized how well Emily could play the helpless, vulnerable card, putting on a pitiful act as if she had been mistreated. Watching her like that infuriated him. S

Though Sean’s jacket was soaked, its dark color still provided decent coverage.“Cough... cough...” Emily’s face was flushed as she choked on the pool water, coughing repeatedly. Sean patted her back gently, helping her clear the water from her airways.“I’ll help you back,” Sean said once she’d caught her breath. “You should take a hot shower and change into some dry clothes.”“Alright...” Emily rasped, her voice a bit hoarse from the coughing. The server who had accidentally pulled Emily into the pool also swam to the edge and climbed out. I’ll get into big trouble with my manager.”Holding Sean’s jacket close around her, Emily felt a sharp pain in her wrist from the earlier pull. Now that she was out of the water, the panic had faded, but the stares from the onlook

Justin sat across from Zac in silence, his gaze lowered as he mulled over something. Zac, noticing his lack of response, repeated himself. Only then did Justin lift his eyes to meet his. His voice was slow, measured. “She hasn’t fully recovered. She can’t be discharged.”With a single sentence, he had made the decision for Haley. Just like before. Once again, he was keeping her by his side—not in a villa this time, but in a hospital. And in the end, what difference did it make? The same overbearing possessiveness. The same suffocating control. To love someone was to give them everything he had. But if she refused to love him, then he would take away her freedom instead, binding her to him. A chain with no key. One end locked around him, the other around her. They would be forever entwined. Neither able to leave the other. And freedom? As long as she was within his reach, that was the only freedom he would allow.Zac understood exactly what Justin meant,

“Justin, have you seen the news online?” Emma’s voice carried a tone of worry, but beneath it lay a carefully calculated move. She had debated for a long time. Waiting anxiously for his reaction was pointless. It was better to take the initiative. Feigning shock and ignorance, she played her role seamlessly. Whether Justin had seen the post or not, whether he suspected her or not, she had to remain composed. If she lost control now, it would only raise suspicion. Even if Justin did doubt her, once he investigated and found that the post had nothing to do with her, it would help clear her of suspicion. “What post? I’m busy. I don’t have time for the internet.” Justin’s voice was distant, devoid of warmth, as if he were speaking to a subordinate. It was nothing like the indulgent tone he had once reserved for her five years ago. His gaze, however, never left Haley. He watched her intently, studying every shift in her expression, worried that she might misunderstand his

”Yes, yes, boss.” After issuing his warning, the man hung up again, cursing under his breath. Frustration surged through him, and he kicked the nearby sofa with full force. *That afternoon, Justin finally returned. The first thing he did was try to take Haley’s phone. But before he could grab it, she turned away, dodging him effortlessly. “What are you doing?” She looked at him warily. The doctor had already said she could use her phone, so what had gotten into him now? “Don't look at it,” he said, his voice carrying a rare trace of hesitation. Justin was scared. He didn’t want her to see the rumors online, the ones accusing Heidi of orchestrating her car accident. He was afraid she would see his mother differently, that she would start to resent her. But Haley met his gaze, instantly reading the meaning behind it. It was the kind of unspoken understanding that came from years of knowing each other, something that hadn’t faded even after five years apart.

“Alright, I got it.” Haley replied. Like Helen, her first instinct upon seeing the post was to suspect Emma. But by the time she reached the end, she sensed something was off. That was why she had Richard investigate. And sure enough, her hunch was right. Unlike Helen, however, she wasn’t fuming with anger. She had already expected this outcome. “Do me another favor,” she texted Richard again. “Dig up everything you can about this newly registered company. If you can find out who’s really behind it, even better.”Justin had saved her life. Maybe she’d finally found a way to repay him. *For the past few days, Emma had been stuck at Jacob’s place, unable to go anywhere.Of course, she had seen the news. After reading through the entire post, her eyes flashed with resentment. Who did this?! Her mind immediately jumped to one suspect. It had to be “him.” Suppressing the tremor in her fingers, she scrolled through her call history and dialed his number.

Their goal was to manipulate public opinion to undermine RC Corporation and Justin’s credibility, ultimately increasing their own chances of success.Haley analyzed the situation while calmly continuing her breakfast. Seeing that Helen had arrived so early, she figured her sister hadn’t eaten yet. Without a word, she slid half of her breakfast toward her. Helen, deep in thought, furrowed her brows and put on an air of calculated scheming, as if she were a seasoned strategist. “So, basically, Justin is too high-profile now, and everyone’s just waiting to take him down,” she concluded with exaggerated seriousness. Haley nodded in agreement. It made sense. After Mr. Yates Sr. passed away, Justin had inherited a massive share of RC Corporation at such a young age. It was only natural that the older generation in the company resented him. Targeting him was to be expected. Helen nodded knowingly, pretending to be contemplative. But the moment the aroma of food hit her, she

Justin wasn’t without blood relatives in this world. He still had his two sons—Chase and Alex. The thought lingered at the tip of Haley’s tongue, but in the end, she held it back. She considered telling him for a moment but decided against it.“I'm sorry,” Justin's voice was thick, weighed down by the remnants of his tears.Haley was surprised. She hadn’t expected him to apologize. Shaking her head, she replied, “It's fine.”Though, thanks to him, her pajama top was damp with tears. Now she would have to change.Justin released her and, seeing that she was still awake, no longer bothered to soften his footsteps.Under the dim glow of the small nightlight in the living area, he made his way to the bathroom. Turning on the faucet, he splashed cold water onto his face, washing away the traces of his tears.Haley said nothing. Outside, the night was still and quiet.Justin stood by his car, making no move to open the door. An unlit cigarette rested between his fingers. He wanted to smoke, but the thought of the lingering scent clinging to him and bothering Haley made him hesitate. His dark eyes were fixed on the distant city skyline, his thoughts drifting. He stood there for a long time, lost in thought, until William’s voice pulled him back to the present. “Mr. Yates, we should go.” Snapping out of it, Justin finally reached for the car door, ready to head back to the hospital. But before he could step in, his phone rang. It was Emma. “Justin, I saw the news online. Is it true? Is Aunt Heidi… is she really gone?” Emma’s voice was filled with concern, laced with just a hint of fear—soft, fragile, like an innocent little rabbit. On the other end of the call, she held her phone in one hand, scrolling through news videos on a tablet with the other. Despite the worry in her voice, her e

Justin answered truthfully, “My mother had a habit of traveling. She texted the house staff, saying she was going on a trip. None of us thought much of it at the time. It wasn’t until two days later, when we couldn’t reach her, that I started searching.“When I checked her bank statements and found no transactions at all, I knew something was wrong. That same night, I reported her missing.”The officers took note. His statement aligned with the messages found on Heidi’s phone.“All right, we’re done here. You’re free to go,” the officer said, organizing the case file before tapping on the final page. “Sign here.”Justin mechanically repeated the process. Perhaps because he had just signed his name in the morgue, this time, his signature was a little smoother. But it was still unsteady, his hand refusing to cooperate. As he put down the pen and pressed his fingerprint on the document, he finally asked the question that had been gnawing at him. “What was my mother’s cause of death
