Chapter 218

Author: Hauling Treasures
Before Alex could finish his sentence, Helen yanked him into the room in one swift motion.

From her bedside table, she grabbed a bag of snacks and shoved it into Alex’s arms as a bribe. Both hands firmly gripping his tiny shoulders, she looked him in the eye with utmost seriousness. “Alex, forget about what happened this afternoon. Don’t bring it up again—especially not to anyone in the family. And absolutely not to Uncle Richard.”

She could already imagine Richard’s relentless teasing if he got wind of it.

Alex glanced at the bag of snacks in his arms, then cheekily held up two fingers, silently bargaining for a second bag.

Helen narrowed her eyes at him, feigning irritation. “Fine, two bags.”

Quickly, she stuffed another bag into his arms and shooed him out of the room. The door clicked softly behind him before Alex could say another word.

Grinning from ear to ear, he looked at the two bags of snacks in his hands. His brother didn’t like snacks, so these were all his.

Haley gazed at her sleeping sons, their delicate faces and brows resembling Justin’s more than her own. The bond of blood was truly remarkable, she thought, her emotions swirling as she stood there in silence. After a while, she turned off the lights and left the room.Meanwhile, Justin and Zac finished their meeting and left the restaurant earlier than Evelyn’s group, sparing them a chance encounter. Yet, as Justin exited, he glanced back inside, hoping for a glimpse of a small figure that never appeared.Returning to their hotel, Zac grabbed two cases of beer and joined Justin in his room. He was already tipsy from their business dinner, but now he drank even more. His cheeks were flushed, and his eyes glistened as he slumped on the couch, beer bottle dangling from his hand. The bitterness in his heart bubbled to the surface as he turned to Justin, rambling incoherently. “Why did Helen disappear too? Tell me… why?” He tugged at Justin’s shirt collar, his voice trembling and punctu

Helen shook her head, her tone flustered. “No, it’s not like that…” “Not like that? Then why did you leave me? Five years, Helen. Was I not good enough for you?” Zac’s lips pouted in mock indignation, but his voice betrayed genuine hurt. Helen’s gaze locked onto his slightly parted lips, which glistened with a subtle allure under the dim light. They seemed almost hypnotic, a magnet pulling her closer. His voice, however, broke the spell. It was so irritatingly loud, drowning out her thoughts. She frowned. “If he wouldn’t stop talking, then she’d make him stop.”The idea formed quickly, and she acted on it just as fast. Her hands flew up, cupping his face, as she leaned in. But no matter how much she tried, she couldn’t close the distance between them. Frustration bubbled in her chest. If she couldn’t get to him, then she would make sure he came to her. With determination, she yanked his face closer and puckered her lips. *Thud!A plush toy smacked against Helen’s f

After breakfast, everyone went about their day—some heading to work, others focusing on studies. Unlike most days, Chase didn’t accompany Wilfred to the office. Instead, he began his first session learning computer skills from Richard. By the time the dining room emptied, only Helen, still nibbling on her breakfast, and Alex, deliberately lingering, remained.“Aunt Helen, can we go out to play today?” Alex asked with a big, hopeful grin as he leaned closer.“Not happening,” Helen replied firmly, easily seeing through his ploy. “You should focus on finishing the homework your mom assigned. When her art exhibition wraps up in a few days, she’ll check your work. If it’s not done, you’ll have to face her punishment.”Alex shrank back slightly, his shoulders stiffening. That sounded serious. *In the small study, Alex sat at his child-sized desk, begrudgingly working on his assignments. The desk next to his sat empty. Chase was off in Richard’s computer room, absorbing new skill

“How about I treat you to lunch?”“Sure!” Alex exclaimed, completely forgetting the promise he had made to the guards at the back gate.Justin pulled out his phone and called Zac, who was still working inside the hospital. “You’ll need to handle lunch on your own today. I’ve got a last-minute lunch meeting.”Zac, in the middle of closing a file and grabbing his briefcase, replied, “Hold on, I’ll wrap things up here and join you…” But before he could finish, the line went dead. “Hello? What the—don’t just ditch me!” Zac groaned at the disconnected call.Justin rolled down the window and called out, “William, drive.” *Meanwhile, Helen was busy working from home in her study. The gallery’s invitations and promotional materials for the art show had already been finalized. Besides the invited guests, tickets for the event were available online for a premium price. After confirming her post-exhibition schedule, Helen shut her laptop. Time had flown by while she worked, and before s

“He doesn’t have a dad?” Justin was stunned to realize how unfortunate Alex's circumstances were. No wonder he had never seen any family with Alex the three times they had met—only the elusive "aunt" whose voice he had heard but never seen in person. If he ever had a child, Heidi would probably carry the kid around 24/7 just to show them off to her wealthy socialite friends. “What am I even thinking?” He mocked himself silently. “The woman I loved most died in the earthquake. I’ll never have children in this lifetime.”With that thought, his gaze toward Alex grew even softer, full of a rare tenderness. After they finished lunch, with Justin deliberately taking his time because he didn’t want the meal to end, he decided to call Alex’s aunt. He was concerned someone might be worried about the boy’s whereabouts and only dialed the number after Alex agreed.Meanwhile, back at the estate, the security guards reported no sign of Alex inside or outside the premises. Helen was brainst

Back at the estate, Richard hung up the phone and casually tossed it into Helen’s arms. Helen stood rooted in place, her gaze fixed on a spot on the carpet as if lost in thought. It wasn’t until Richard called her name twice that she snapped out of her daze. “Helen? Helen?” “Ah!” She swatted at him in irritation. “What’s with your face so close to mine? You scared me!” Richard, unfazed, raised an eyebrow and looked at her puzzledly. “What were you thinking about? You didn’t even hear me calling you.” Then, as if a lightbulb went off in his head, his expression shifted, and he let out a sly chuckle. “Wait a second—have you been acting weird since last night? Don’t tell me… you’re in love! Who’s the guy? Come on, spill. As your brother, it’s my duty to vet him for you.” He leaned in, resting his elbow on her shoulder with a teasing grin. Helen rolled her eyes and shoved him away. “Go play your Batman role somewhere else. Stop gossiping.” Even being pushed off d

Alex picked out an Ultraman action figure and thoughtfully chose a toy gun for his brother. “Looks like boys all have a thing for toys like these,” Justin thought, carrying Alex to the checkout counter to pay. “Thank you, Mr. Yates,” Alex said earnestly. He remembered what his grandma had taught him: to be polite and always return kindness. If you wanted to be fair, you could reciprocate immediately, but if you valued a friendship, you should wait for the right opportunity to give something meaningful in return. Alex’s little mind was already spinning. His watch was dead now, but he decided he would find a way to give Justin a gift later. He wanted to keep this new friendship alive. After leaving the toy store, the afternoon sun still blazed hot. Justin carried Alex back to the car, turning on the air conditioning while they waited for Alex’s family to arrive. From the rearview mirror, William noticed something extraordinary: his ever-stoic and unapproachable boss was

Helen retorted, “I don’t know much about human traffickers, but don’t you hack into their networks every day? You should know more than I do! Alex is still just a kid!” The argument between Helen and Richard showed no sign of stopping. Meanwhile, Chase calmly walked over and took Alex’s hand. “Let’s head back to our room,” he said, guiding Alex upstairs. Alex glanced back at their bickering aunt and uncle, shrinking his neck slightly. “Aunt Helen looks so scary when she’s mad,” he muttered. Clutching his new toy, he followed Chase upstairs. Once the door closed, Chase furrowed his brows in that all-knowing way of his. “So, when you disappeared during dinner last night, was it to meet this guy you’re talking about today?” Growing up together as twins, Chase could easily predict Alex’s actions from the smallest clues. Alex tilted his head, thinking back. “No, it was even earlier than that.” He then excitedly recounted how he had met Justin, though leaving out a few deta

Haley shook her head quickly, flustered. “No… I mean—no.” Then she realized how that sounded and corrected herself. “Actually, yes. I’m just hot.”Helen blinked in confusion. “Hot? The classroom has air conditioning. Was the sunlight from the window hitting her seat?” Helen wondered.Without missing a beat, she rushed over and tugged the curtains tighter, making sure her bestie didn’t get “sunburned.” She still needed Haley to hold onto that top spot. Otherwise, she would lose her excuse at home for going out to “study” with Zac.The pressure and tension of senior year finally came to a close. On the day of the college entrance exam, when everyone stepped out of the test hall for the last time, their faces lit up with genuine smiles—relaxed, free, and full of relief.Haley tossed aside her textbooks. Her summer break was filled with makeup shopping trips with Helen or third-wheeling her and Zac on their study-dates-turned-real-dates.That routine came to an end the d

Haley’s eyes shifted as she thought quickly. “But… I don’t really like guys who rank higher than me on exams.”She gave a light shrug and continued, “I mean, I think we should be focusing on school right now. Relationships can wait until after we get into college, right? What if we don’t even end up at the same school? Long-distance never works, and after a while, we’d probably drift apart. Don’t you think?”Was that a gentle rejection? It seemed like it. Haley wondered if she had been too blunt. Had she left him any dignity at all? They still had a whole year of high school left together. She didn’t want things to get awkward between them. A harsh rejection would only make everything more uncomfortable.Justin furrowed his brows, thinking for a long moment before giving a single reply. “Okay.”Then he slung his backpack over his shoulder and walked off.Haley stood there, completely confused.“Okay? What did he mean by that?“Did he understand what I was trying to say?

Emma and her little clique of schoolyard mean girls had Justin completely surrounded.“I’ll ask you one more time,” she said, smug and unbothered. “Will you be my boyfriend or not?”“No,” Justin replied coldly, his face unreadable.“Hey!” one of Emma’s loyal followers stepped forward, cracking her knuckles and getting way too close. “Do you even know who our Emma is? She’s the heiress of the Xander Corporation. She’s giving you a chance, and you should be grateful. You better say yes.”“What, you want us to beat you up before you agree?” another girl sneered.Justin didn’t flinch. His icy stare locked onto the girl who spoke, completely unbothered by the threat.Emma waved a hand to hold her crew back, pretending to be generous. Then she turned to Justin again, cocky and bold.“I like you way too much to have anyone rough you up,” she said sweetly. “But I heard you’re trying to get into Altiplano University in the capital. As soon as Justin sat down and pulled out the textbook for the next class, a hand suddenly reached out from beside him.“Hey, I’m Zac White,” Zac said.Justin glanced up with a cold look, then went right back to pulling out his notebook and pen—completely ignoring the extended hand.Zac awkwardly pulled his hand back, speechless.“Man… this guy’s seriously cold. What a show-off,” he thought to himself. The class flew by. When the bell rang, signaling the end of the period, Haley and Helen linked arms and headed off toward the bathroom. Zac immediately trailed after them.“Where are you two going? Take me with you.”“You planning on going into the girls’ bathroom, you perv?” Helen smacked his hand away, not wanting their classmates—or worse, their teacher—to get any ideas about the two of them dating.Zac scratched his nose. “Fine, I won’t go in the girls’ room… but I can go to the guys’ one, can’t I?”“Hmph!” Helen huffed, scrunching her nose playfully.Zac clutched his chest

At a top-ranked high school in Lincourt City, the bell rang.Students still lingering in the hallways or restrooms were urged to hurry back to class.Outside, the summer heat simmered, accompanied by the steady buzz of cicadas. Inside, the air-conditioned classrooms offered a much more comfortable escape. In Class 2–1 of the junior year, students hurried back to their seats. Just as the final chime faded, the homeroom teacher walked in, holding a stack of freshly graded exam papers.“For this round of mock exams,” she announced, loud and clear, “the top score in the entire grade once again goes to our very own Haley!”A wave of murmurs and applause followed. “Let’s all work hard and try to catch up to her next time!”She began handing out the papers in order, from the highest score to the lowest. After Haley got her paper, the next few went to her seatmate, Helen, and the student sitting behind them—Zac.“Work hard and catch up?” Helen muttered as she slid back into her seat, s

It was just a shame that life rarely worked out the way people wanted it to.*Ten years passed in the blink of an eye.Chase and Alex had grown taller and older. Haley’s once-small jewelry brand had not only found its place in the industry—it had grown into a globally recognized luxury label, known for bespoke, high-end pieces. As for Justin, he split his time between Haven State and Merika State. Whenever he wasn’t busy, he would shamelessly camp out at the estate, claiming he was just there to “see the kids.”Eventually, no one even bothered to call him out on it anymore. One day, Haley had a business meeting with a potential partner—a widowed single father. Somehow, Justin caught wind of a rumor that the man had feelings for Haley and was actively pursuing her. Word had it that she was interested too, and they were currently having dinner together at a restaurant. The second Justin heard that, he canceled a company meeting, boarded his private jet, and flew straight to Mer

As soon as Haley stepped into the room, Justin followed right behind her.It was the first time he had ever set foot in Haley’s room—the space where she lived in Merika State.“Get out!” she snapped.“Haley, I just wanted to see you. Please don’t make me leave, okay?”His eyes scanned the room. The walls, the shelves—everything was filled with Haley’s photos. There was even a custom-built glass display case, clearly made with love, housing her pictures from childhood to adulthood. It was something Evelyn had put together just for her, and it overflowed with affection. There were portraits of her alone, family pictures, and right at the top—photos of Chase and Alex.Justin looked at each one carefully, as if he were trying to piece together a life he hadn’t been part of, but desperately wished he had been. Then his gaze landed on a particular photo: Haley in her teens, wearing a soft pink-and-white hoodie with little bunny ears on the hood. Her pale skin, big round eyes, and brig

“Haley…” Justin’s voice was weak. There was so much he wanted to say, but he didn’t even know where to start.“I heard you’re sick?” Haley said.“I… I’m fine. I’m not really sick, I just—”“Take care of yourself. Heart problems aren’t like other illnesses. Just look forward. Let go of the past. Meet someone new. Live your life.”Justin fell silent. His head dropped, and the phone pressed against his ear was clenched so tightly in his hand that his knuckles turned white. He wrestled with the words for a long moment before finally managing to force out.“Okay.”But he knew. He wouldn’t meet someone new. Without Haley, what kind of life could he possibly call “living”?The call ended. Life went back to its quiet rhythm. Justin no longer clung to Haley or tried to find her. After one more day in the hospital, he threw himself back into work and took over the reins of RC Corporation. They had truly managed to part on peaceful terms. After returning to Merika State, Haley d
