A wolf howled in the distance.

The night grew darker, and the forest thickened around her, threatening to swallow her whole. Eira dared not stop. She kept running, dodging thick roots growing out of the brown floor beneath and little twigs that could break her ankles. She ran and ran until her lungs couldn’t take it anymore and her legs gave up. Collapsing to the ground, she allowed herself a moment to breathe. Her eyes raked over her arms that were bruised from previous falls and caked with mud similar to her face. It seemed as though she had been running for ages.

The sound of a howl echoed in the night again, and Eira struggled to her feet. I can’t stop. I have to keep moving, she told herself. Or he will kill me.

The Centaurus forest stretched on endlessly. The trail was straight, even if she wanted to take turns, she couldn’t. She would have to squeeze herself through trees and the space wasn’t enough. This time as she ran, Eira spotted Bloodivy trees on one side. Their trunks ble

When her eyes opened again, she lay on a bed drenched in sweat. The same bed she had been sleeping in every night for over a week. The one in which she had dreamt the most incredible dreams. She had been dreaming the same dream for four nights—being chased by a werewolf with Caleb’s face and finally ending when she touched the concealed painted canvas. And every time, she would wake up sweaty with her ugly birthmark feeling like it was on fire. Like she felt that night and the three nights that had gone before. There was no meaning in it, at least none she could hope to find. What does it mean? Maybe Josh knows something. The night lamp was on, driving Her eyes darted from the old wooden clock, its hands displaying the time as 4 AM to the open window on her right. The pale curtains fluttered as wintry winds swept past it, hiding and showing the white moon against a dark field becoming whole slowly. A chill reverberated down her spine, but Eira couldn’t say whether it was because of the

He smiled at her, and for a moment his blue eyes sparkled and she felt lost in them. Hastily, she broke the eye contact. She darted her eyes away, trying to find something interesting to set them on, but there was nothing. Instead, Eira requested, “Let’s not talk about moms, okay?”He nodded and proceeded to tell her about the upcoming vampire council event. Eira listened, struggling to keep her eyes away from his face. Finally she picked up another fruit and cast a levitating spell on it. Her eyes watched it as it floated about in the air, but her eyes keenly listened to Nate’s words.“Damien wasn’t planning on attending the council event. I do always to stay updated on the supernatural activity but he hates the town vampires, especially Alex, the head. But now, considering what has happened, it’s kind of mandatory we do. We hope to investigate about John Williams and try to figure out who sent him,” Nate explained. That day after Dana had left, Eira had walked down to the dungeon cel

Alex greeted the audience, a charming smile displayed across his face. The smile made the wrinkles beneath his eyes more prominent. With a goatee on his chin and a grey moustache above his thin lips, Alexander Black appeared older than all of them, having transitioned into a vampire much later in life. Actually, Damien was seventy years older and could still pass as his son among the common folk. He resumed talking, “Its good to see all of you here.”Damien scoffed and a woman sitting beside stared at him with a frown, but he did not care.Alex signalled his hand to a table at one corner. “There’s a feast tonight. We have jugs of sweetened blood of all groups for you and pies stuffed with blood. Blood beers as well! Courtesy of Dr Lisa working at the Orilon Medical centre and Chef Jake. Be sure to thank them! I hope you have a good time tonight.” He finished with another of his charming, wicked smiles and took a seat in the audience.Nate felt sick and disgusted. He wanted to leave as

“Do you get it now? This is how it’s supposed to be done.”Dana pouted her lips and bobbed her head before saying, “I think so.” She grabbed the book from Eira’s arms and started solving the math sum. The witch sighed and laid her head against the couch’s headrest, silently praying that she wouldn’t need to explain the whole procedure all over again. She had never been interested in tutoring younger students.Outside the mansion, rain poured down gently over the grass. The night air smelled sweetly of mud. Eira inhaled it and smiled. She could feel the connection between her and nature. You and me, we are nature’s servants; Josh’s monotone voice rang in her ears.

Eira's feet reacted to Dana's scream immediately. One second she was standing in the kitchen with her cell phone in hand and the next—she was running. The dark brown locks of her hair flowed behind her head, and heart raced with fear and anticipation. She arrived in the living room out of breath to find a stranger with his teeth sunk deep into Dana's pale, delicate neck. She had stopped screaming, yet the harsh sound of her screams still echoed in the witch's ears. Eira's stomach stirred at the sight. The male vampire held his arms around Dana's petite body, vigorously feeding off her blood. A red stream ran down her neck and soaked her white T-shirt completely. Her eyes were closed; she wasn't struggling."No! Don't be dead!" Eira whispered in terror. The mere sound was enough to grab the monster's attention. His black eyes with white-slit pupils darted to her and held her captive. He loosened his grip and Dana's limp body fell to the floor with

The Peltvinian warlock sighed as his eyes drifted from the bunch of waxy red leaves, to a pile of black ash kept in a tray—all that remained of the attacker that had struck the mansion two days ago. His workroom was illuminated only by the soft light emanating from candles, giving a golden glow to the charts hanging over the black stone walls and glass jars of varying shapes stacked into shelves, but it looked far neater than how he had left it.His mind, on the other hand was complete chaos. There were so many thoughts swirling about at the same time that he struggled to tell one from the others. His emotions were raw—regret reigned over the other. Not once, but twice he had been absent when his suject had needed his protection. He had made a promise to himself. I will not betray her like I did the others, he had told himself. But unwillingly he had. After hearing the vicious tales on his return, his mind was

Josh couldn't see her struggling that way. Her eyes had welled, she was just about to cry. So, he walked up to her, ready to spill his guts. Before the warlock could get a single word out, he sensed something tugging the bottom of his jeans. His eyes lowered and he spotted his puppy, Flames.Flames was magical, a phoenix in the form of a dog. Josh had owned him since he was a child himself. He had been a birthday gift from his mother. During the span of his life, they had parted ways often only to find each other back again. On his quest of finding the Videns viribus, he had found his little pet once again.A smile almost appeared on his face as he picked him up in his arms and ran his fingers gently through his reddish-yellow fur. Flames began swaying his tail happily.Eira's eyes watched with admiration but her lips still frowned."You're being delusional. No one is hiding anything," Josh said and lowered Flames to the floor again. He wagged his tail at him before exiting his workroo

That morning Eira dreamt the werewolf dream again. She was running through the woods, being chased closely behind by the half-human, half-wolf beast as the full moon looked down at them wickedly. The whole dream was exactly the same; it ended when she was about to find out what lay behind the satin—only this time the werewolf had put on Hela's face. Her fur was darker and somehow shinier than the one she had seen before. Her amber eyes had watched Eira hungrily while her jaws opened and closed, revealing sharp teeth threatening to rip her to pieces. When her eyes opened, the sun's warm rays brushed her face. The little dove drawn on her back felt warm and it made her touch her neck. The wounds had healed but the memories were deeply engraved in her mind. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw Rafael with his white pupils and pointy fangs. She shook the memory away for time being and got out of the bed. She hoped it for a good day but the hope vanished the moment Nate said Damien wan

[JOSH]Even ten days after the massacre at the Black Hall, not a single soul involved that day could stop thinking about how all of it could've been prevented if only a few trustful, true words had been exchanged. The effect was seen on each one. Many lost their lives and many others people who they cared about. The signs of recovery however were blooming all around. People were forgiven for their bad deeds out of the kindness of the hearts of those who had been at the suffering end. Surprising to Josh, Eira had been strangely calm about having Raven in the mansion. The latter refused to return to the Black Hall and although she denied it, the warlock knew, deep inside she was mourning for Alexander. Nate—another surprise to him—had been chosen to represent the vampires in the supernatural coucil. The bloodsuckers had been oddly agreeable and united about peace—again another surprise for the warlock."Are you giving up already?" Josh asked when he saw Eira lazily throw the herbs in
