He reached out and grabbed the pen, shoving it in her limp fingers.
Melanie held the pen, hesitating as she hovered over the line. Part of her wanted to resist, to not make it so easy for Hardin after his betrayal. But deep down, she knew prolonging things would only cause more pain. "You don't deserve to be celebrated, Hardin. You're nothing but a liar and a cheat," she spat out. She scrawled her name quickly in the vacant lines before she lost her nerve, throwing the pen down in disgust. Natalia clapped her hands with glee. "Oh wonderful! Let's go celebrate your freedom and also continue your birthday celebration, babe." Melanie struggled to tear her eyes away from Hardin as his lips met Natalia’s in a passionate kiss. Once they left, she ran a bath and sank into the scalding water, sobbing violently. She had loved this man with all of her heart, even before he married her. Was their entire marriage a whole lie? The next morning, Melanie woke with a pounding headache, her eyes puffy and red. But she knew she had work to be done. By 8:00 sharp, she had dressed in her work clothes and headed for her office, needing the distraction of work. At least there, she could focus her energy on her new role of running her grandfather's company. Today was the day she was going to be sworn in officially as the CEO of the company, Marshall Corp. She had been the assistant to the interim CEO this whole time, whom her grandfather had appointed before his death. She stepped into the sleek elevator and pressed the button for the top floor, feeling a growing sense of pride as the numbers lit up. But as the doors slid open with a quiet ding, Melanie's smile faded. Behind the shiny mahogany desk that should be hers sat Hardin, leaning back casually as Natalia perched beside him. "What are you two doing here?" she asked, fighting to keep the tremor from her voice. Hardin arched a brow. "Well, hello to you too, ex-wife. I think the better question is, What are you doing here?" Natalia smirked, running painted nails along Hardin's arm. "You are looking at the new owners of Marshall Corp." "Yes, that’s right.” Hardin nodded, his eyes cold. Melanie stared at them in confusion, a sinking feeling already forming in her stomach. "What...what are you talking about? This company has been in my family for generations; it was left to me. How could you possibly own it?" Hardin smirked as he replied calmly. "Not anymore. You see, when you so helpfully signed our divorce agreement, you also signed over full ownership of the company to me." "What?” Melanie asked weakly. “That can’t be right." There was a hint of a smile on Hardin’s face as he answered. "Surprised? This company is mine now, Melanie. You signed it over along with everything else." Melanie staggered backwards in shock. Dear God, what has she done? How could this be happening? "Here, darling sis, take a good look.” Natalia slid the divorce papers from yesterday across the table. Shakily, Melanie picked them up, and her eyes scanned the fine print rapidly, then landed on the highlighted clause at the bottom of the last page. It read: "The signing party agrees to forfeit all ownership rights to Marshall Corp., all other existing properties, transfer shares, and the CEO title to Hardin Cole and Natalia Marshall." A sob escaped her lips as the truth hit her. Hardin had meticulously planned this all along—the divorce, the betrayal, even getting her to sign while she was emotionally vulnerable. It was the perfect trap. "How...how could you?" She whispered brokenly. Hardin leaned forward, his eyes cold. "Come on, Melanie, you should have known better than to trust me. Love makes you stupid and gullible. Did you really think I was going to let you keep this thriving company after I was done with you?" Beside him, Natalia snickered. "Poor Melanie. You were so easy to manipulate. Now you have nothing." “How could you both be so cruel?” She yelled louder than she intended. "Listen, you may have won this round, but my grandfather built this company with his own hands before you ever came along. I won't go down without a fight." "Oh, just shut up.” Natalia snapped at her. “You’re the illegitimate child leeching off my grandfather’s money in the first place. You do not belong in the Marshall family, and I wondered how you deceived my grandpa into signing seventy percent of all his properties to you.” “Your grandpa?” Melanie scoffed. “The same one you never gave a hoot about unless it came to money? Did you ever care to really know him? Take care of him?.” Natalia gave a dramatic flip of her long blonde hair. “Oh please. It doesn’t change the fact that you do not deserve any of the wealth you were about to acquire. This was our plan from the beginning. None of it was ever real.” Melanie’s heart started pounding so wildly in her chest that she could hear it loud and clear in her ears. She swallowed hard. “What does that even mean?” Natalia strutted over to where she stood and smiled maliciously. “It means everyone was in on the plan except you, the foolish little girl who was blinded by love. Hardin never loved you. How could you even believe he broke up with me just to be with you, huh? Dad found out about the will just in time, and once we all knew seventy percent of all the shares were to go to you when you were married for at least two years, we had to secure it for ourselves.” “And that’s where I came in.” Hardin’s deep voice was heard. “Marshall Corp. was a big obstacle to making my family’s company the most successful and biggest. Taking control of the company was the perfect plan. So I had to deceive you into marrying me for two years so we could share all the properties amongst ourselves, stripping you of any rights.” Melanie held her chest because it felt as though her heart was going to burst out any minute now. “No,” she said in a whisper. “You’re lying! That’s not true.” “Wake up and don’t be stupid,” Natalia said, rolling her eyes in annoyance. “It’s all over now. And you have absolutely nothing. So, do yourself a favor and never come close to our family again, you hear me?” Melanie’s legs felt like jelly at this point, and she was in a daze. “Well?” Hardin called out impatiently. “Get out. You’re fired as of today.” Melanie shook her head vigorously. “No! You can’t do that.” "Oh, I already did, and there’s nothing you can do about it,” he sighed, as if she were a nuisance, and pointed to the door. “It’s for you. You gotta leave now before I call security to drag you out immediately.” Her tears were stinging her eyes so badly that they were beginning to make her vision blurry. But she wasn’t going to shed a single tear in front of them. “Just know that this isn’t over, both of you,” she managed to say, striving to sound as firm as she could. And with that, she spun on her heel and strode towards the door, head held high. Melanie knew just where to go. She found her way to the office of Peters & Associates, the most respected law firm in the city. She was shown promptly into Michael Peter's office, where he rose politely to greet her. "Melanie, it's so good to see you again. Though I wish it were under better circumstances, please have a seat and tell me how I can help." Melanie took a deep breath before telling him everything. Michael took his time listening and reviewing the documents. Finally, he leaned back with a sigh. "Legally, this puts us in a tricky spot. The settlement is fully enacted, and your signature is binding." "You have to help me get it all back!" Melanie pleaded desperately. Michael hesitated. "I want to, Melanie, truly. But overturning a legal document already in effect is quite hard. With Hardin's resources, he'd fight this to the bitter end." The blood drained from Melanie's face as she sank back into the chair. Her heart was hurting so much, and she wanted to cry again. "There must be something you can do. Maybe argue that I was emotionally compromised. Please, I need to get my life back." Sighing, Michael took off his glasses and rubbed his eyes. "We could try to argue you were not in the right frame of mind and weren't properly counseled on the terms. However, these cases are long, drawn-out processes. Even with a skilled lawyer like myself, a win is not guaranteed." "I don't care how long it takes; I have to try!" said Melanie urgently. "Based on what you've told me, I estimate fees of at least $50,000 just to take it to trial. And there are no guarantees." "Fifty thousand?" Melanie echoed in dismay. She didn't have anywhere near that amount. "Isn't there any way to argue the case for less?." "I'm afraid not. That means you do not have the resources available then.” He peered at her. Melanie's face fell. "No. We had a shared account, and now I have no access to it. I don't have any money of my own left after the divorce." Michael nodded sympathetically. "I thought that might be the case. If you can’t pay, I can't take the risk." "He took everything; I have nothing left." Tears spilled down her cheeks as she spoke. “Please, you have to help me.” Michael leaned forward intently. "I cannot officially take this case without upfront payment. I’m sorry, I can’t help you.”Melanie let out a long sigh as she trudged through the front door of her too-big, empty mansion. She had to figure out some other way to hire a good lawyer. As she headed to the kitchen, she could hear hushed whispers from the maids. "I heard Master Hardin is now with Miss Melanie’s tramp of a sister. I never would've guessed he had it in him." The next maid spoke up. "That Miss Natalia looks like trouble. Mark my words; she'll break his heart too in time." That was when the cruelest one chimed in. "If you ask me, Miss Melanie was too boring and goody-goody. Master Hardin always liked the wild ones more. About time she got what was coming." Melanie froze, blinking back angry tears. At that moment, one of the maids glanced up and fell silent, spotting her. She nudged the other two, and they quickly straightened. “Welcome back home, Miss Melanie!” The one who had been badmouthing her was the first to ask, "Good evening, Miss. Can I get you anything?" Melanie shook her head, r
Melanie stared at Natalia in disbelief. "You can't be serious. I will never be your maid." Natalia laughed coldly. "Why? Because you think you're above it? Please. Do not forget where you came from." She stepped even closer, gaze raking over Melanie calculatingly. "Or have you forgotten? Your mother was a simple maid when my father picked her up, wasn't she?" Anger flooded Melanie at the jab at her late mother. "My mother worked hard as a waitress - it was honest work providing for me. Besides, your father is my father too."Natalia waved her hand dismissively. "Waitress, maid, potato, potahto, it's all the same." Melanie turned helplessly to Hardin. "Please, tell me you won't allow this."Hardin watched her impassively, his hazel eyes showing nothing. "Our marriage is dissolved, Melanie. You have no right to be here anymore.""How can you be so cold?" she whispered in despair. “I do not know you to be a troublemaker Melanie,” he looked at her coldly. “You have to leave right no
Melanie straightened her lilac dress that hung to her curves and headed for Hardin's office straight from the hospital. She had to give him this chance to do right, for their baby's sake if not her own.As she was trying to talk to the secretary, Natalia appeared from nowhere. Great, her witch sister was all she needed to have a mental breakdown."Well well, if it isn't the miserable ex. Causing trouble as usual, I see." She paused and glared at the secretary. “Didn’t I tell you she isn’t allowed into the premises?”Melanie held her head high. "I need to see Hardin. It's urgent."Natalia scoffed. "Well tough luck, he's in an all day meeting. Come back with an appointment, maybe in a few months I'll squeeze you in.Or how about you come back….never?""Are you serious? This can't wait. Please, it's about..." Melanie trailed off, unwilling to give anything away to this snake yet.Natalia sauntered closer until they were nose to nose. "You'll tell me whatever it is, darling. Hardin's in an
Back at Marshall Corp. The secretary, Gina, had put off a particular conversation with Hardin for weeks but knew she couldn't delay it any longer. Her stomach was in knots just thinking about breaking the news to him. Hardin was an intimidating boss, always stern and unrelenting in his demands. Gina feared how he would react to what she had to say. She heard the elevator ding, signaling Hardin's arrival on their floor. His long strides could be heard down the hall as he approached his office. Gina slowly got up from her desk and walked over to meet him. "Good evening, Mr. Greene. Do you have a minute? There's something I need to discuss with you," Gina said, trying to keep her voice even. Hardin glanced at her impatiently as he unlocked his office door. "Make it quick, Gina. I have a lot of work to get through tonight." She hesitantly followed him into his spacious office. Hardin tossed his briefcase onto the leather couch and turned to face her, crossing his arms expectantly.
FIVE YEARS LATERDUBLIN, IRELAND.Sophie twirled around in front of the small mirror hanging on the wall of their bedroom, checking her pink sundress and white bow tied around her long brown hair for what seemed like the hundredth time that morning. "Don't I look like the prettiest princess, Mommy?” she asked excitedly, turning to face Melanie who was folding clothes and putting them into their suitcases. "You look gorgeous as always sweetpea," Melanie smiled at her daughter. Sophie beamed and did another twirl, the skirt of her dress flaring out around her. From the bed, her twin brother Matthew scoffed in response. At nearly five years old, his slim frame already showed signs of future height. "You look silly is what," he teased. Sophie turned to stick her tongue out at him, hands on her hips."I’m not! Take it back, Mattie poo!" Her foot stamped petulantly against the expensive carpet.Melanie heard Matt sigh loudly. She looked over to see him walking over to peer into the smal
Hardin sighed as he wrapped up the video call with some investors. Leaning back in his chair, he rubbed tired eyes and rolled his stiff shoulders from sitting hunched over his laptop all afternoon. As CEO of Marshall Corp, the work was never done.He booted up his computer one last time to check some proposals and reports before leaving the office. As it loaded, his eyes scanned the daily news feeds automatically popping up. Then something made him pause and do a double take.Squinting closer at the screen, he rubbed his eyes in disbelief. There, on the front page of the Seattle Times website, was a photo that couldn't possibly be real. But it was unmistakably her face! His ex-wife stared back at him from beneath a headline that sent his mind spinning: "Acclaimed Interior Designer Melanie Marshall Returns to Seattle After 5 Years." He could hear his heart beating loudly against his rib cage as he clicked through to the full article with shaking hands. It was really her. Paragraphs
Melanie felt a blush creeping up her neck at the open admiration in his tone. She was surprised but pleased he still remembered her after such a long time."You remember? That’s…Wow." "Yeah of course,” he shrugged his shoulders casually. “you’re the only girl I’ve been with that passes out while she’s about to get laid." She flushed immediately and cleared her throat, trying to compose herself. "I did try calling the number on your card but it wasn't reachable."Luca frowned, giving her a pointed look. "Perhaps it would have been reachable if you tried five years earlier, don’t you think?"She sighed, dropping her eyes. "I had my reasons then for staying away. Things kinda got crazy" Her fingers fiddled restlessly with the clasp of her purse. After a pause, Melanie met his hard gaze once more. "Regardless, I wanted to properly thank you...for saving my life that night. You never gave me the chance before." He nodded stiffly, gaze roaming over her outfit in a way that made her think
Luca's jaw twitched, clearly fighting the urge to argue with his elderly grandfather in public. Finally he sighed tersely."All right, Grandpa. I'll check my schedule and see if I have an opening to show Melanie and the children a few residential options in town around tomorrow afternoon."Damon chuckled deeply. "Excellent! No need to be so sour, Luca. I'm sure this will be good business." He turned back to Melanie warmly. "Please, let me know if any home catches your fancy. I want you all to be comfortable during your stay."Melanie chuckled. "You’ve been too kind, sir." She paused, realizing she didn't know his name. "I'm sorry, I didn't catch your name earlier...""Damon. Grandpa Damon to these rascals," he replied fondly, ruffling the twins' hair. "A pleasure to meet you properly, Melanie.""Likewise, Grandpa Damon.” She glanced at Luca."And I appreciate you taking the time as well, Luca. It means a great deal."“Yeah you’re welcome,” Luca replied swiftly, giving her that intense
Dinner at the Marchesi estate that evening was a lively affair, with Grandpa Damon sharing stories and making everyone laugh. He had decided to stay over for dinner.Luca couldn’t help but ask."So, Grandfather, how come you came here unannounced? I thought we had plans to get together next week."Damon chuckled, taking a sip of his wine. "Why, to surprise everyone of course! Can't a man visit his family without having to schedule it?"The twins started giggling, nodding enthusiastically. "We love surprises, Grampa!" Sophie said excitedly.Damon winked at her, reaching over to ruffle her hair affectionately. "That's my girl. And Mattie, of course. Wouldn't want to leave you out, now would I?"Matt beamed. "We're so happy you're here, Grandpa! Can you stay and play with us?"Melanie watched the exchange, a fond smile playing on her lips. It warmed her heart to see them getting along so well. Damon reminded her so much of her demised grandfather and it gave her a warm fuzzy feeling."We
Melanie let out a sigh as she pulled into the gas station, the twins already in full interrogation mode from the backseat. As she got out to pump gas, Sophie asked, "Mommy, can I come help with the pump?"Matt immediately chimed in, puffing out his little chest. "No, no, no! I'm bigger and stronger! Sophie can't hold the pump even if she tried!""That's not fair, Mattie-poo!" Sophie’s face scrunched up in protest. "I asked Mommy first!"Melanie pinched the bridge of her nose and forced a smile. "I'll be done in a minute, you two. Neither of you are allowed to come help me, okay? Stay in the car."Just as she was finishing up, a black Mercedes pulled into the station. Hardin stepped out, his eyes immediately finding Melanie. As he approached, a young boy burst out of Melanie's car, rushing over to her. Melanie quickly ushered him back into the car, just before he got a glimpse of the boy's face. Oh now he was curious as hell."Melanie," he called out.Melanie looked flustered, her eyes
"I can't believe this is happening! That witch Melanie has made a complete laughingstock of us online. Our wedding is being called the 'biggest flop of the year'!" Natalia threw her hands up in exasperation.Hardin sat on the edge of the sofa, scrolling through his phone with a furrowed brow. He glanced up at her, but didn’t say nothing.Last night, they eventually got help and was able to fix the yacht in time but the damage had already been done. Melanie literally sailed away with all their guests and they had to get into a smaller boat and go back home."And now she's hosting some grand gala at the Ridgemont Estate tonight? The same venue we had booked for our wedding?" Natalia screeched, her voice raising an octave. "This is an absolute disaster!"She turned around to face Hardin, her eyes blazing. "Don't you have anything to say about this? She's humiliating us, Hardin! I swear, I'm going to go over there and strangle that bitch with my bare hands!"Hardin groaned, raising a hand
Melanie could practically feel the heads turning as she made her grand entrance with Luca by her side. She had begged him to help her book a luxurious yacht at the last minute to teach Hardin and Natalia a lesson.Luca being a sweetheart and a crazy rich billionaire was able to pull all the stops to get a yacht under such short notice. The neighboring yacht, where Hardin and Natalia's wedding party was in full swing, looked almost quaint in comparison to Melanie's impressive vessel. The music was blaring, the lights shining brighter, and Melanie couldn't help but feel a thrill of satisfaction as she watched the guests' attention shift towards her.She looked stunning in a body con burgundy dress, her hair styled to perfection and her makeup flawless. She smiled to herself as she watched the commotion she had caused, her eyes locked on Hardin and Natalia's yacht.Natalia's face turned bright red with rage as she spotted Melanie. "What the hell is she doing here?" she spat, pulling Ha
Melanie let out a deep sigh. "Luca, I'm not bothered by your presence. I just...would be able to say it better when I'm not, you know, in the middle of a bath."She shifted slightly in the tub, the warm water lapping against her skin. Despite her attempt at being nonchalant, she couldn't deny the sudden flutter of nerves in her stomach as they were in close proximity. He moved forward, and Melanie caught the scent of his cologne, a blend of spice and clean, masculine notes that made her throat go dry.He leaned even closer, his necklace dangling just above the water's surface. "Then let me make it easier for you." He reached out, his fingers gently tracing the outline of her face. Her eyes fluttered closed, and for a moment, she forgot how to breathe. She felt Luca's breath on her lips, so close that she could almost taste him. Just as she braced herself for the kiss, Luca pulled away, a small chuckle escaping his lips."I'll be waiting for you in the bedroom," he murmured, in a low

We could have the ceremony and reception on board."Natalia’s interest was instantly piqued. "A yacht? That's luxurious.I think I really love the sound of that."Ryder nodded. "But we'd have to postpone the wedding to find one that accommodates your guest list. And it won't be cheap."Hardin hesitated. "Postponing isn't ideal, but it's better than settling for a subpar venue."Natalia's face twisted in indecision. “Can’t we get one for this same weekend? I cannot postp
Natalia clutched Hardin's arm, her voice shrill with horror. "What's going to happen to our wedding now? We can't have it in any cheap place! What about the invitation cards? They've already been sent!"Hardin's expression became serious. "Stop whining for a second, Natalia. Go wait in the car."But Natalia continued complaining and whining like a dying cat. "But Hardin, this can't be happening! We—"Rolling his eyes, Hardin placed a firm hand on her shoulder. "Calm down Natalia, let me handle this." He turned to Melanie firmly. "I need you to reconsider, Melanie. Please, name your price - I'll pay anything to keep our original booking." But Melanie simply smiled very calmly."I'm afraid it's out of my hands now. Do look for another venue soon.""Hardin, darling, do something!" Natalia screamed, clutching at his arm pitifully. With a sigh, Hardin pried her fingers away. "Natalia, I said go wait in the car. Don't cause any scenes, understand?"With a huff, Natalia reluctantly walked
Melanie stood before the mirror, turning this way and that in her soft, black dress that clung to her curves like a second skin. It was a low cut dress giving a proud show of her sexy back. Naomi lounged on the bed, watching her with a knowing grin."Girl, your wedding was yesterday, and you weren't even glammed up like this," Naomi said, chuckling. "Boy, are you looking sexy this morning! Are you planning to take over the world or seduce every man in sight?!"Melanie laughed, recalling the chaotic events of the previous night. "You know how crazy last night was – very unprepared for. But I'm more than prepared for this."Naomi narrowed her eyes at Melanie clutching Luca’s card firmly. "You were given that card yesterday, and you're already using it for your evil schemes?"Melanie tossed her hair with a chuckle. "My 'husband' gave me the card, and I can use it to buy even you, if I please."They burst into peals of laughter but it was interrupted by the twins bounding into the room.
Melanie's hands trembled slightly as she stepped out of the car and onto the courthouse steps. Luca offered his arm, and she took it, feeling both nervous at the same time somewhat excited she was doing something so crazy. As they entered the courthouse, Melanie smoothed the short simple yet elegant white silk dress Luca had ordered for her last minute. The fitted bodice hugged her curves, and made her feel like a princess. The priest greeted them warmly and began the ceremony. It was almost over as quickly as it started."Do you, Melanie, take Luca to be your husband?" the priest was asking."I do," Melanie replied, her voice steady."Do you, Luca, take Melanie to be your lawfully wedded wife?"“I do,” he stated firmly as he slipped a shiny diamond ring onto her finger. Melanie gasped, her eyes widening."Isn't that...too expensive?" she whispered.Luca raised an eyebrow. "Are you cheap?" he teased.Melanie's cheeks flushed, and she remained silent. The priest pronounced them husban
