Chapter 58

Author: Aurora Wells
"You—!" Chloe lost her composure, but quickly reined herself in.

This was a public setting, and more importantly, Miles was here.

They still had enough sense not to lash out at me so recklessly in front of him.

The atmosphere turned tense again, thick with unspoken hostility.

No one spoke this time, not until the food began arriving.

Miles casually took my plate of lamb chops and, with precise, unhurried movements, cut the meat into neat, bite-sized pieces before sliding the dish back to me.

I looked at the sizzling, juicy lamb and grinned. “Thanks, Miles.”

Julian suddenly spoke, his tone laced with irritation. “Eve doesn’t like lamb.”

Miles raised an eyebrow. “Oh?”

Julian’s expression was firm. “I was married to her for five years. I know exactly what she likes. She hates lamb.”

Without a word, I picked up my fork, speared a piece of lamb, and popped it into my mouth.

Then I turned to Miles and said, “I love lamb. I always have.”

His gaze softened with quiet amusement. “I know. Your b

Miles had practically called Julian a pathetic excuse for a man.Under the table, I anxiously clenched my napkin. For a split second, I thought Julian might snap, flipping the table in rage. Without thinking, I reached out, instinctively grabbing Miles’ hand.I barely brushed against him before his fingers closed around mine. His grip wasn’t too tight, but firm enough to send a silent message, “Don’t worry. I’ve got this.”The tension coiling inside me unraveled slightly.I lifted my gaze to Julian, whose face flickered between red and pale, his jaw clenched so tightly it looked painful. After what felt like an eternity, he finally muttered, “Mr. Wynn, there are things you don’t understand.”Miles adjusted his glasses slightly. “I haven’t been back long, so I admit I don’t know everything. And I won’t make assumptions.”His gaze shifted toward me, his voice calm but unwavering. “But I won’t let Evelyn get hurt again.”Then, as if making a point, he turned back to Julian. “Can you say

Miles took my hand and pulled me up. “Let’s go somewhere else.”Without sparing Julian or Chloe a single glance, he strode out of the restaurant, leading me along with him.I couldn’t help but glance back.Julian and Chloe were still at the table, awkwardly arguing with the restaurant manager, their frustration clear. They had probably planned a perfectly romantic evening—reserved the best table to order a fine meal—only to find themselves abruptly unwelcome. But could such a prestigious restaurant really just close early like that, just to get rid of them?I followed Miles. He walked fast, his grip on my hand firm, unwavering. We left the main dining area, but instead of exiting the building, he led me up a staircase on the side.I was caught off guard, not knowing what he was up to.When we reached the second floor, impeccably dressed staff were already waiting. They guided us to a private terrace—intimate, elegant, with a breathtaking view of the city skyline.I peered down through

I kept my head down, quietly eating for a while. Then, a sudden thought hit me—Julian never really knew me. He didn’t even know my likes, dislikes, or dietary restrictions. An empty feeling settled in my chest, and before I could stop myself, I muttered, “Then what were those five years of marriage for?”Miles took a slow sip of his champagne, his voice unhurried. “A sincere heart, wasted on a bastard.”I choked.…The next morning, I woke up early and checked my phone, only to find dozens of new messages. Most of them were from buyers on the resale app, inquiring about prices.I carefully responded to a few interested ones. Some trusted the listings, while others were skeptical about luxury goods being sold at such steep discounts.I wasn’t familiar with how online sales worked nowadays—my last memory of the internet was back when social messenger had just launched.Typing out responses one by one was slow and exhausting, and before I knew it, the entire morning had passed.By the ti

Mary gave me a knowing smile, as if she understood but wouldn’t say anything. "Oh, I wasn’t talking about that. I just meant you’re too skinny," she said while carrying the empty bowls and dishes into the kitchen. I was so full I could barely move, so I paced around the spacious apartment, trying to digest. Feeling bored, I wandered into the kitchen and saw Mary handling a sink full of chicken, duck, and fish. I gaped. "Mary, are you cooking all of this for me? I can’t eat that much by myself tonight." She didn’t even look up. "Of course not. Mr. Wynn is coming for dinner too. It’s my first time cooking for your employer—I have to make my best dishes." I froze. "He’s coming too?" She smiled. "Yes, doesn’t Mr. Wynn live here?" Panic surged through me. "No, no, no! Mil—Mr. Wynn doesn’t live here. I don’t live with him!" She didn’t seem to care, waving a hand dismissively as she continued cleaning the poultry. I wanted to leave but hesitated. Then I turned back to expl

Mary chuckled. "Speak of the devil, and he shall appear. That must be Mr. Wynn." But when she opened the door, it wasn’t Miles—it was another bouquet, this time a massive arrangement of pink oriental lilies. Lilies had much larger blooms than roses, making the bouquet look even more extravagant. Both Mary and I were stunned. The delivery guy handed over a form for us to sign, chatting as I signed for it. "A lot of people were staring on my way here. Is it someone’s birthday?" I was completely baffled. "Are you sure these are for me? Could they have been delivered to the wrong address?" The delivery guy asked, "Are you Evelyn White?" I nodded. He double-checked the address and my name, then smiled. "Then there’s no mistake. Gotta run—next delivery’s waiting." With that, he was gone. Mary and I stared at the two giant bouquets, speechless. Before she could say anything, I quickly cut in, "These aren’t from Mr. Wynn." Without wasting another second, I went back to

Thinking it was Julian calling from another number, I answered without even looking and immediately snapped, "Julian Moore, you disgusting scumbag! Call me again, and I’ll report you for harassment!"The person on the other end paused for two seconds. Then, after a brief silence, Miles’ voice came through, filled with helplessness. "Eve, are you fighting with him again? What happened this time?"…By the time Miles arrived, the living room was filled with five different bouquets, each a striking shade of pink.Every single one was fresh, vibrant, exquisitely wrapped, and looked expensive. The atmosphere in the room felt a little strange.I held a card I’d found tucked inside one of the bouquets. It read: "Do you like these flowers?"The sender’s name was "Everlasting Gaze."What a psychopath!Furious, I ripped the cards to shreds.Miles walked over to the windows and opened them, letting in a rush of fresh air. Then he signaled to the security guard who had come up. "Take all of these

Mary quickly checked me over. "Oh dear, Miss White, stop washing already! Go on, wash your hands and keep Mr. Wynn company in the living room." She shot me a series of exaggerated winks. Hearing the commotion, Miles walked over. Before I could react, Mary suddenly shoved me toward him. "Mr. Wynn, take Miss White out of here. She’s not meant for this kind of rough work!" Caught off guard, I stumbled straight into Miles’s arms. Mortified, I stiffened. Mary really didn’t know how to control her strength!Miles steadied me, his gaze flicking to my clothes, damp from the splashing water. He took my wrist and led me away. "Go change into something dry." Still in a daze, I nodded. "Oh… okay." Then I obediently went to my room to change. By the time I came back, Miles was already seated on the couch, watching the news. Feeling awkward, I hesitated for a moment before moving to sit on the opposite end of the sofa, not too far from him. To be honest, Miles wasn’t as cold or

Dolly suddenly called. "Eve, what happened between you and Julian? He somehow got my number today and completely lost it on me."Just hearing Julian’s name was enough to give me PTSD.I quickly stepped onto the balcony and answered, "Why was he mad?"Dolly let out an exasperated sigh. "He swears I’m the one who put these ideas in your head and turned you against him."I scoffed. "Does he really not know what he did? Blaming everyone else—he’s shameless.""I told him exactly that, and guess what happened?"I frowned. "What did he do?"She sighed. "He called my boss and put me on unpaid leave.""What?!" I was stunned. "That lowlife actually did that?"Dolly sounded unfazed. "It’s just unpaid leave. I don’t really care. I was thinking about taking some time off and traveling anyway."But I knew better.I felt guilty. Dolly was dragged into this mess because of me. If it truly didn’t affect her, she wouldn’t have bothered calling—she would’ve just sucked it up in silence."Come stay with

My phone buzzed twice.I quickly unlocked it and found a flood of photos and videos.A quick glance was all I needed before I grimaced and looked away."Here, there’s more where that came from," Trey said, watching me with an amused smirk. "So, tell me, do you really want to take down Julian? What happened? You finally got your head on straight? Or did you take the wrong meds recently?"Of course, someone as well-connected as him would have heard all about my black history.I hesitated. "I… I just don’t want to keep embarrassing myself."Trey chuckled, unconvinced. "Liar."His eyes narrowed, studying me with unsettling sharpness. "Tell me the truth, and I’ll give you something even juicier."I hesitated, James’ warning from earlier still fresh in my mind.Seeing my internal struggle, Trey’s smirk deepened. "No truth? Hmm?"I had no choice but to admit, "I… I lost my memory. And I don’t love Julian anymore."Trey blinked. Then, after a brief pause—he burst into laughter.Loud, unabashe

The three of us walked out together.Waiting outside were three flashy Ferraris, belonging to Trey’s poker buddies. They strolled over, grinning. “Trey, Evelyn, where to?”Trey casually rattled off a location, and the guys whooped as they jumped into their cars—each one, of course, with a stunning young woman already waiting in the passenger seat.Dolly tugged at my sleeve, whispering, “This is a full-blown rich boys’ club.”I nodded. “I just need to stick around long enough to get the evidence.”My gaze drifted to the bag she was clutching tightly—stuffed to the brim with cash.“And, well… there’s a lot of money involved, too.”At the mention of money, Dolly’s entire attitude shifted. Her back straightened, her legs no longer ached, and suddenly, she had zero complaints about hanging out with a group of spoiled playboys.Instead of taking one of the Ferraris, Trey ditched the idea and grabbed a convertible that could fit all three of us.And so, we sped off.Four cars tore through th

Trey smirked, his tone dripping with mockery. "Oh? Is that so? I thought it was your beloved Chloe who started spilling the tea. I’m just helping the public see the truth, nothing more."Laughter rippled through the room again.I watched as Trey danced all over Julian’s last nerve, and yet, Julian had no way of shutting him down.I couldn’t help it and laughed.Julian’s eyes darkened the moment he saw me smile. "Evelyn, you—"I cut him off. "What does this have to do with me? Chloe accused you of deceiving her. Maybe you should go explain things to her instead of embarrassing yourself here."His expression grew even more menacing. "You... what are you doing with him?"I let out a cold, dismissive laugh. "Julian, I’m divorcing you. We have nothing to do with each other anymore. If I want to hang out with friends, I will. If I want to go out and have fun, I will. What right do you have to control me?"His face darkened with rage. He stepped forward like he was about to drag me away.Bu

Something stirred inside me, and for a moment, I forgot to push him away.“Hurry up, play your hand!”The guys who had just lost were already urging me to make a move.I hesitantly placed a card down—the Queen of Spades.Trey smirked. “Not bad. Playing the Queen—might just turn things in your favor.”With a cigarette between his lips, he leaned over again, casually adjusting the cards in my hand. The truth was, I did know how to play poker—at least in theory. I had spent enough time as a child watching my mother and her socialite friends play at fancy cocktail parties. But watching and playing were two very different things. At first, I was stiff, unsure of the strategy. Then, as the game went on, I started picking up the rhythm. And then… I won.I stared down at my hand in disbelief, double-checking my cards. I glanced at Trey for confirmation.Just then, he flicked away his cigarette and leaned back with a lazy grin.“Straight flush. Damn, you actually won. Alright, pay up, boys!”

A strange shiver ran through me, and I quickly averted my gaze.Trey seemed to catch onto my thoughts. He smirked, deliberately exhaling a puff of smoke in my direction before turning to the others. “Alright, let’s play a few rounds.”I shot Dolly a pleading look, but she only shrugged helplessly. The game began. Trey’s long fingers toyed with the custom poker cards, his every movement exuding an effortless sense of wealth and refinement.“Three rounds.”He casually discarded a card, then leaned back, eyes half-lidded as he took a slow drag from his cigarette.“Hah! Gotcha! I win!” one of the guys across the table cheered, rubbing his hands together excitedly.Trey rolled his eyes, laughing. “That’s all it takes to get you excited? Fine, take it.”The game moved on—counting cards, reshuffling the deck. I watched as Trey casually tossed a thick stack of cash onto the table. My brows furrowed and thought, “They’re playing for that much?”He glanced at me. “Starting to get it?”I shook

I took in the massive VIP suite, realizing just how absurdly large it was.Scattered around the plush sofas were more young men—clearly heirs to wealthy families, each accompanied by stunning women. And these weren’t just any women. Every single one of them had the kind of looks that could make them instant social media influencers. They knew how to dress, and they weren’t shy about showing off. That was when it clicked—so this was why the server gave Dolly and me such a weird look earlier.I was in a simple, modest white cotton dress. Dolly was in a tracksuit and sneakers. Our attires were high-quality from designer brands, but compared to these women, we might as well have walked in from an entirely different world.Dolly tugged at my sleeve, frowning. “Who is this? Do you recognize him?”I pointed to the man sitting in the very center—the most striking, effortlessly handsome one in the room. “He’s Trey Wynn. So, it’s him.”Right on cue, Trey spotted us. He lifted his glass and s

I said, “He did buy me a lot of jewelry, designer bags, clothes, and other things. Those are worth quite a bit.”James adjusted his glasses. “Those are considered gifts. The court won’t allow you to reclaim them. “But Chloe Clarke, on the other hand, is in trouble. The transfer records and expensive gifts she herself exposed can all be compiled as assets to recover.”I was momentarily stunned.Dolly burst out laughing. “Amazing! This scheming, gold-digging snake clearly never bothered to read the latest civil laws! Everything she got falls under marital assets.”Realization hit me. “So not only can I get back the money I invested in Moore Group, but I can also claim a significant portion of Julian’s wealth and leave Chloe with nothing?”Dolly grinned. “Ding ding ding! You got it.”Then she turned to James. “Mr. Howe, make sure you collect every piece of evidence. Let’s ruin Julian Moore.”James smiled knowingly. “Bankrupting him might be a stretch—Julian has built a strong foundation

He pulled an A4 sheet from his briefcase, a photocopy of an official document.I immediately spotted my signature, along with the statement detailing the purpose of the transferred funds. In my own handwriting, I had written: Investment as a partner in Moore Group’s Expansion project.A long breath of relief escaped me.James smiled. “It’s all clearly stated, and there’s also a record of your transfer into Moore Group’s corporate account. There’s no way they can deny this.”“Thank you, Mr. Howe,” I said sincerely. He waved it off with ease. “No need to thank me. You should be thanking the financial regulations in place. “If you had transferred the money directly to Julian’s personal account instead, it could’ve been classified as a gift.”At that, the entire legal team seemed to relax considerably. Then James turned to me with a serious expression. “Miss White, have you truly lost your memory?”I nodded. He grew even more solemn. “You cannot let Julian know about this.
