Chapter 28

Author: Aurora Wells
Miles turned and walked back through the gate, leaving the distraught Kira to be half-dragged, half-pushed into a car, luggage and all, before being driven away.

I hurried back to the living room, doing my best to act as though I hadn’t seen or heard a thing.

When Miles entered and saw me sitting quietly, he smiled. "Let’s go. It’s nice outside now, but the dew will get heavier if we wait too long."

I cheerfully walked beside him as we headed out for a stroll.

The walk was pleasant.

The night breeze was gentle, and his presence was reassuring.

I found myself talking more than usual, while Miles said little, simply listening to my rambling with quiet attentiveness.

I didn’t ask why he was willing to go so far as to send Kira away just to stand by me.

Some things are better left unknown.

I realized happiness often lied in not questioning too much.

The next day, I went to the hospital for a check-up and to have my ointments reapplied.

Dolly came to visit me. Seein

I remained speechless. It was becoming painfully clear just how unhinged I must have been before losing my memory. I actually had Dolly create a fake account to go undercover just to catch Julian cheating. Honestly, with that kind of behavior, it wasn’t hard to see why Julian and everyone else around him disliked me. I frowned, incredulous. "I even had you create a fake account? But wait, if I had her screenshots, why didn’t Julian believe me before?" Dolly rolled her eyes so hard I thought they might stay that way. "Because you didn’t dare show them to him. You sent him one once, and Chloe turned it around on you, claiming you photoshopped it to slander her. Julian believed her, not you." I was stunned. "I lost to Chloe just like that? Is Julian an idiot?" Dolly sighed. "He’s not an idiot. He just doesn’t love you."That’s why it wouldn’t matter what you said. He still wouldn’t believe you. And I think, deep down, you always knew that. That’s why you didn’t try to use thes

As soon as I finished speaking, dizziness hit me like a wave. My vision sparkled with flashes of gold, and I knew the pressure in my head was spiking again. Gripping Dolly’s arm for support, I whispered, "Get rid of her. I don’t want to see her." My body trembled as I spoke. I could feel this body’s reflex—anger. It was disheartening to realize that I wasn’t capable of ignoring them. I still got mad, furious even, to the point where I wanted to lose control. I couldn’t tell if it was fragments of lost memories surfacing or simply the aftermath of the concussion. All I knew was that my body felt off. Whenever anything involved Julian or Chloe, an overwhelming discomfort took over. It felt pathological, something deeply rooted in my mind. Dolly noticed immediately that something was wrong. She turned to Chloe and snapped, "Chloe, Evelyn has nothing to say to you. Whether you’re here to apologize or to flaunt something, we don’t care anymore." Her tone sharpened. "Yo

Julian raised his voice. "You don’t mind? Now you’re suddenly acting generous."His smile was sharp, laced with sarcasm. "Evelyn, you’ve won. She’s gone. She won’t be bothering us anymore. So, can you come home with me now?"I clutched my chest as a familiar dull ache washed over me.I really was a fool. For a brief moment, I actually thought Julian had finally come to his senses.I thought that, in the end, he would choose to believe me over Chloe. I actually thought that, for once, the version of me before the accident would finally win.I let out a soft laugh. "Did I win?"I met his gaze and asked again, "Did I really win?"A faint smile tugged at my lips. "You only told her to leave because you thought I was throwing a tantrum. You don’t respect me, and you certainly don’t believe a word I say."Julian’s expression shifted slightly.I had hit the mark.I laughed bitterly. "I lost a long time ago. I’m the one who should have left among the three of us."Julian opened his mouth to s

The smooth, rich tone of his voice sent a calming sensation through me, like every nerve in my body had just relaxed. It was a crisp yet soothing sound.I looked up in surprise—Miles was here.Julian’s expression darkened the moment he saw him.He strode forward, stopping right in front of Miles, his gaze sharp. "Mr. Wynn, was it you who arranged for my wife’s medical exam?"Miles gave a slight nod. "Yes. Is there a problem?"Julian let out a cold, mocking laugh. "How kind of you, Mr. Wynn. Should I be thanking you?"Miles remained unfazed. "No need."With that, he turned toward the hospital room. "Everything is set. Let’s go."I quickly gathered my things, eager to leave this place with him.But Julian blocked the way again. His stance was firm, making it clear he wasn’t backing down. His voice was cold and resolute. "Mr. Wynn, this ends here. Evelyn is my wife, and I’m her husband. I’m taking her home."He fixed his eyes on Miles, his tone carrying a clear warning. "If you overstep

We waited for the car, feeling relaxed. At the very least, after a good meal, the gloom weighing on me had lifted a little. On the other hand, Dolly was absolutely thrilled. She had spent the entire dinner singing Miles’ praises. She went on so much that I actually started feeling secondhand embarrassment. She giggled and pumped her fists in the air. "That was so satisfying!""Eve, didn’t that feel amazing? Julian finally got put in his place. Did you see his face? I swear, he was so pissed his nostrils were practically smoking."I hummed absentmindedly, barely responding.Dolly nudged me. "Eve, you better hold on tight to this guy. Miles is a hundred times more reliable than Julian. And let’s not forget—he’s loaded."I stiffened. "What are you even talking about? Someone like me? There’s no way. Don’t say nonsense. He’ll be back any minute."Dolly waved me off. "What do you mean, ‘no way’? You’re the heiress of the White family…"Before she could finish, a mocking voice cut in."Wel

I hesitated for a moment.Behind me, the mocking continued, one voice after another."Is that Evelyn White? Ha! Isn’t she Julian’s most devoted lapdog? Last time, I remember she handed out ten thousand dollars to each of us just to beg for his forgiveness.""Yeah, she used to follow him around everywhere. Every bar in the city had someone on her payroll just to report his whereabouts. “The dedication, I swear… Too bad Julian never even acknowledged her.""Some people are just pathetic, throwing themselves at a man who doesn’t want them. She’s completely ruined the White family’s reputation.""Keep it down—she’s Nicholas White’s sister…""So what? We’re Julian’s boys. She should be flattered we even talk about her.""The White family really got the short end of the stick with her."Rage churned inside me.Dolly had heard them too. She grabbed my hand and tugged. "Let’s go. They’re just a bunch of spoiled rich brats with more money than brains."I spun around without warning and slappe

Miles’ expression darkened the moment he saw the blood on my face. His sharp gaze flicked to Finn, who still looked ready to pounce. Without a word, Miles gave a subtle nod to someone beside him. Before I could process what was happening, a dark figure shot forward.Smack! Smack! Two quick, brutal slaps landed across Finn’s face, followed by a swift, forceful kick that sent him crashing to the ground.Just moments ago, Finn was shouting about how he was going to teach me a lesson. Now? He was scrambling to get back on his feet, disoriented and furious. He had just begun to lunge forward when he finally registered the man standing in front of him.His expression twisted, all the color draining from his face. His lips trembled."M-Mr. Wynn…"Miles’ stare was ice-cold. "Did you hit her?"Finn clutched his cheek, his voice laced with grievance. "She attacked me first! Look, look…"He tilted his head, exposing the red, swollen mark on his face as if expecting sympathy.Miles barely spared

I tugged at Miles’ sleeve. "I don’t want to see him."Miles glanced at me. "Then wait in the car."I hesitated. "What should we do about this? It looks like they called the cops.""It’s fine," Miles said calmly. "You and Dolly get in the car. I’ll have the driver take you home first."I nodded and immediately pulled Dolly with me to leave. But Julian was quick to block our path.My expression turned cold. "Stay out of my way. I don’t have time for lapdogs."Julian clenched his jaw, barely holding back his anger as he reached for my wrist. "Come home with me."I took a step back, avoiding his touch."I’m not going back."Dolly stepped in front of him. "So, what if we beat up your little lackeys, Julian? Your so-called friends were the ones who insulted Eve first. They had it coming!"Julian’s face darkened, his gaze locked onto me. "Evelyn, you never change. I actually thought you were serious this time, but you’re just making a scene again."He let out a sharp laugh. "Who put you up to

My leg was still in a cast, held together with steel pins… I had no choice but to lie back down. The voices outside grew louder, more aggressive. "Miles Wynn, what the hell do you think you're doing keeping my wife here?"“Julian Moore, she’s no longer your wife. The legal team filed for divorce half a month ago.” “So what? Until the court finalizes the divorce, she’s still my wife!” Miles’ voice was sharp and composed. “Julian, is there any point in being this unreasonable? “From the moment Eve made up her mind to divorce you, your relationship was over. What’s left is just settling the accounts.” Julian’s voice was hoarse. “And what gives you the right to decide whether we’re over or not? Who the hell are you to her? She’s my wife! As long as the court hasn’t ruled on the divorce, I’m still her husband…” Miles let out a cold, amused chuckle. “Interesting. I wasn’t aware that a woman was a man’s possession. Just because of a piece of paper, she has to obey you?” Julia

The moment that shameless thought crossed my mind, my face flushed red.Miles remained seated beside me, calmly using an exquisite-looking knife to slice an apple into perfectly shaped pieces. I kept watching, not wanting to disrupt the beautiful scene before me.A breathtakingly handsome man, dressed in a crisp white shirt, carefully peeling and slicing an apple for himself. The same hands that signed deals worth millions moved with deliberate precision as he fed himself each piece... I was mesmerized.Miles had finished slicing and picked up a silver fork, spearing a piece of apple before bringing it to my lips.I obediently opened my mouth and took a bite. It was the most delicious apple I had ever tasted. He smiled at me and continued feeding me.Without hesitation, I kept opening my mouth, eating, then opening again. Finally, he stopped. Instead, he picked up a wet napkin and gently wiped my lips.I smiled, puckering slightly in anticipation of his next thoughtful gesture. He

A kiss as light as a butterfly’s wing landed on my cheek.A kiss? That was supposed to be a kiss? Was he trying to fool a child?Annoyance bubbled up inside me.I fumed about it, fumed some more, and then just like that my eyes suddenly flew open. The man in front of me froze, completely stunned. Then, his expression shifted—his smile growing wider and brighter by the second.I pouted, still unhappy. “Liar…”His laughter was soft, his eyes shining with a light I had never seen before. And then, just as I was about to complain further, he suddenly leaned down and captured my lips in a deep, lingering kiss. Now that—that was a real kiss.…I woke up one month after falling into a coma. And the first thing I saw was Miles. And then… he kissed me awake. It was a beautiful way to return to the world.I felt good. I sank into the dark depths of the sea.Miraculously, I didn’t feel cold.Instead, I felt warm like being cradled in my mother’s arms. The comfort was overwhelming, lulling me into a deep, dreamlike state. I didn’t want to open my eyes. I just wanted to sleep, right here, safe in this embrace.…"Blood pressure is crashing! We can’t get a reading! Start a transfusion—400 milliliters!""Defibrillator! Hurry! Clear!""Move! Prep for emergency surgery!""Eve, I was wrong! Eve, don’t do this… don’t scare me like this!""Eve! Wake up, please! Eve…""Don’t hold me back! Eve…!"So noisy.I just wanted to sleep.I tried to speak, but suddenly, a thick, metallic taste filled my mouth, and I coughed up a rush of blood."She’s vomiting blood—!"Vomiting blood?I wasn’t dead yet?I struggled to open my eyes. And somehow, I did.Blinding white fluorescent lights glared down at me. The air buzzed with frantic voices, overlapping in chaos."Eve, hold on."A voice cut through the noise, searing int

Julian had no choice but to continue. “We first met at the freshman welcome event. You asked for my number, then added me on WhatsApp. You asked me out a few times…” I interrupted him. “Were you dating Chloe at the time?” His expression tensed. “Eve, what are you trying to find out?” I spoke evenly. “I just want to clear my thoughts. Chloe said I was the one who ruined your relationship. I want to know the truth.” Julian looked doubtful, but after a moment, he patiently replied, “Back then, she and I were constantly fighting, almost every two weeks.” I remained emotionless. “I see. And did I know you had a girlfriend at the time?” He hesitated, confused by my detached tone. “Eve, you… Forget it. No, you didn’t know. But I never actually went on a date with you either.” I nodded. “Thank you.” He frowned. “Thank me for what?” I replied, “For at least knowing to keep your distance back then.” Then I asked, “And after that? Did you break up?” Julian exhaled. “After s

I scrolled through the comments, one after another, each one more vile and repulsive than the last."I thought Moore Group and White Corporation were merging through marriage but turns out he married a woman like this. She looks just like one of those prostitutes.""Damn, bro, she’s got a great body. Pale skin, legs for days!""Tsk, I gotta admit, I’m jealous of Mr. Moore. Bet she’s wild in bed.""Wasn’t she supposed to be some rich heiress? Why does she have zero self-respect? She’s a disgrace to women.""So what if she’s rich and pretty? Her private life is a complete mess. A friend of mine said the White family’s princess is very open—she goes to bars every night and picks up a bunch of guys to play with...""Dude, stop making up imaginary friends."Dizziness and sharp pain crashed over me, making it impossible to breathe.I dropped my phone, gasping for air.Now I finally understood what Rachel had been mocking me about.Three years ago, Julian took me to a business banquet. And a

To be honest, if I weren’t so desperate to know the truth, I would have already left with Dolly. The round-faced girl smiled at me. “I get it. Oh, by the way, Miss White, my name is Sophie Lane. I work in HR, mostly running errands. You can just call me Sophie.”As she spoke, she pulled out a large pouch. “I’ve got all kinds of things in here. Let’s see what you need.”Like a magician, she started pulling out foundation, lipstick, powder puffs—even a small bottle of peppermint oil for headaches. From our conversation, I learned that the commotion Rachel caused earlier had spread across the entire company in less than ten minutes.Sophie giggled. “Miss White, everyone’s saying she got what she deserved. Some of my coworkers are even planning to go out for dinner tonight to celebrate.”I asked, “Was she really that bad?”Sophie lowered her voice. “Not outright evil, but she always used her looks to bully the newbies. “Female employees had to endure her stealing credit for their work, an

Before Rachel even sat down, she blurted out impatiently, “Mr. Wynn, this entire mess is because of that… that lunatic attacking me! I demand an apology and compensation!” Dolly shot up from her seat. “You filthy liar! Say one more word of nonsense, and I’ll slap you to death!” Rachel shrank back slightly, clearly aware of just how dangerous Dolly could get when she lost her temper. I quickly pulled Dolly back down into her seat. Her biggest flaw was her impulsiveness. Every time she had the moral high ground, she would end up losing it just because she was too aggressive, making people think she was the one in the wrong. Miles sat behind his desk, fingers interlocked, his expression cold and unreadable. His voice was equally frigid. “Ms. Cross, apologize.” Rachel froze. “Mr. Wynn, I…” His gaze sharpened. “The break room has surveillance cameras. You know exactly what you said to Miss White.” Rachel was rendered speechless. Under the weight of his authority, she re

As we waited, Miles sat beside us in silence, quietly handing us tissues. I didn’t know how to describe it.By the time Dolly and I had cried ourselves out, the floor in front of us was littered with crumpled tissues. Meanwhile, Miles, completely unbothered, was calmly opening a second pack—rose-scented, no less. I mumbled, “Thanks…” Dolly was speechless.Miles looked at my swollen, tear-streaked face and sighed. “Eve, rest here for a bit. I need to talk to Dolly alone in the next room, alright?” I hesitated and glanced at Dolly. She hesitated even longer but still refused to nod. Miles’ tone grew firmer. “Miss Jones, if you don’t want to talk, I can have someone investigate instead. You should know that I can find out everything.” Dolly wavered. Miles pressed on. “Rather than letting me uncover something that may not even be the full truth, wouldn’t it be better if you told me yourself?“I know how much you care about Eve. That means your version of the story is the m
