AUDREY POV

The morning light streamed through the curtains, casting golden streaks across the sheets. I should have felt warm, safe even, but the moment I reached for my phone, the illusion shattered.

17 unread messages. 5 emails.

All from Harold. My jaw tightened.

I didn’t need to open them to know what they said. Apologies coated in nostalgia. Carefully placed words meant to stir something in me.

Maybe even an “I miss you” thrown in at just the right moment, as if that would somehow erase the past.

I hovered over the first message, then—

Delete.

One by one, his words vanished, just like he should have years ago.

I set the phone down, exhaling.

Then it rang.

A number I didn’t recognize. No, that wasn’t true. I knew this number. I just hadn’t seen since before my surgery.

The cold weight in my stomach settled deep as I stared at the screen.

Then, slowly, I pressed accept.

“Audrey,” the voice purred through the speaker, silk-thin and sharp enough to cut. “It’s been

MICHELL POVThe text came in just after mid-afternoon.PI: Got something. Check your email.I sat up, rubbing a hand over my face before reaching for my laptop. The screen glowed in the dim light of my office as I pulled up the file.A picture loaded first.A golden watch, sleek and polished, but it wasn’t the watch that mattered. It was the crest engraved on the band—intricate, ornate. A symbol I didn’t recognize.I scrolled down. The PI had attached a short message.“It’s not just any crest. It belongs to an elite group—some underground cult, invitation-only. Been around for decades. No official records, no digital footprint. But I found a list.”I clicked the next file.A series of names—except they weren’t real names. Just aliases.AegisVanguardFerrumDaemonSpecterAnd dozens more.I exhaled sharply, leaning back in my chair. MICHELL POV.I snapped a picture of the wristwatch first, making sure the gold crest emblem was sharp and clear in the frame. Then, carefully, I pulled a handkerchief from my pocket. No way in hell was I going to leave my fingerprints on this. If Victor was involved, I wasn’t about to make it easier for him to twist this into something else. Using the cloth, I lifted the watch, turning it over in my hands. It was old, worn in places, but still held an air of prestige—something only a man with status, or one desperate to prove he had it, would wear.My jaw tightened. Victor had no need to claw his way up the ranks. He was already born into power. So why the hell did he have this? I exhaled through my nose, then wrapped the wristwatch in the handkerchief before slipping it into my pocket. If Victor had anything to do with Emilio’s death—if he had a hand in taking away the only person who ever truly gave a damn about me—then he was already living on borrowed time.I turned towar

MICHELL POV.FIVE DAYS LATER.I leaned back in my seat, the scent of aged whiskey and the faint sting of cigar smoke clinging to the air of Ethan’s house. Floor-to-ceiling windows cast a panoramic view of the city, the neon glow of streetlights stretching into the distance. Ethan sat across from me, rolling his glass between his fingers, his usual smirk in place. “Your girl really did it, huh?” he mused, shaking his head. “From a competitor to a damn judge at one of the biggest ballet competitions. That’s wild.” I took a slow sip of my drink, the amber liquid burning a path down my throat. “Not wild. Earned.” Ethan chuckled, lifting a brow. “Look at you. Almost sounded proud there.” I shot him a look, but he only laughed. “Come on, man. Admit it,” he pressed. “Audrey worked her ass off, and now the whole world is watching. You can’t tell me you don’t feel something about that.” I exhaled through my nose, glancing at the ice swirling in my glass. Feel something? I felt eve

AUDREY POVThe faint echo of pointe shoes tapping against the polished studio floor filled the air, rhythmic and sharp like raindrops on a quiet street. I watched my students from across the room, arms folded, hearts quietly swelling as they moved—some clumsily, some gracefully—but all of them were trying. That was what mattered. That was always what mattered. It had been a good week. No, a great one.Just two days ago, I sat behind the velvet-draped judge’s panel at one of the biggest ballet competitions in the country. Me—a judge. I still caught myself blinking in disbelief sometimes. If someone had told the Audrey from years ago that this would be her life... she probably would’ve laughed and danced away.A soft smile tugged at my lips as I corrected a young girl’s posture with a gentle nudge of her shoulder. “Lift your chin, Elina. You’re a star, not a shadow. Let them see you.”She nodded with wide eyes, absorbing every word like gospel. That was what I loved about teaching—see

MICHELL POVHer hand was small in mine, but steady—warm in a way that grounded me, even as a dozen thoughts clawed at the back of my mind. I opened the car door for her, waiting until she was settled before circling to the driver’s side.Silence stretched between us at first, thick and laced with all the things we weren’t saying.I started the engine and pulled away from the curb. The city hummed outside the windows—cars, lights, a world that kept spinning even as mine felt like it was winding tighter, piece by piece.I glanced at her.Audrey stared out the window, her arms crossed, her profile lit softly by the dash lights. I could see the tension in her shoulders. The way she was trying to breathe through it.“Sorry you had to see that,” she said suddenly, her voice low.I kept my eyes on the road, jaw tight. “Don’t apologize. He had no right.”“He’s been following me. For weeks now,” she muttered. “I didn’t want to stress you out more than you already are.”That made me glance at

MICHELL POV.The afternoon sunlight bled through my office window, a gold-tinged warmth that didn’t reach the ice tightening in my chest. My phone buzzed.Father.I let it ring once before answering. “Yes?”“Come to the estate,” he said without preamble. “Victor’s here.”I stood slowly. “Why?”There was a pause. “Because I asked him to be. And I want you both present.”He hung up.I stared at the silent phone for a beat, jaw locked. Then I grabbed my jacket and left.By the time I stepped into the drawing room of the estate, the sun had begun to crawl lower behind the tall arched windows, casting long shadows over the polished floor. The silence of the room was only broken by the quiet ticking of the grandfather clock—the kind of silence that didn’t soothe, only stretched tension taut like a wire.I found him in the sitting room, legs crossed like he belonged there, his blazer casually draped over the side of the armchair. His fingers tapped lightly against his glass of scotch. He w

MICHELL POVIt had been ten minutes since Victor left.Ten minutes since he’d gone to “change.” Ten minutes since the farce began.I drained the last of my scotch, set the glass down with a soft clink, and stood. The amber liquid still burned at the back of my throat, but it did little to quell the deeper fire simmering beneath my skin. The corridors of the penthouse were dim, and quiet, like the house itself was holding its breath. As I turned down the west hallway, voices drifted into earshot. One of them clipped and curt.Victor.“…Are you sure no one’s been in there?”Rose’s warm, familiar tone answered with calm certainty. “Only Mr. Michell, sir. He stepped in days ago.”I reached the edge of the corridor just as their eyes met mine.Rose, flustered, dipped her head. “Excuse me.” She vanished down the hall without waiting for permission.Victor and I stood there. No words. Just the low hum of air conditioning and the kind of silence that didn't beg to be broken—it dared you to.

MICHELL POVThe smell of leather and cedarwood greeted me as I stepped into Father’s penthouse. It was colder than usual. Not the kind of cold that came from overworked air-conditioning, but the quiet, metallic kind—the one that pressed into your skin, coiled around your bones, and whispered, “Don’t forget why you’re here.”I didn’t.The chessboard from yesterday still sat untouched on the coffee table, pieces frozen mid-game. A metaphor, maybe. Or a warning. The moment the elevator doors slid open, I knew I was walking into something calculated.I adjusted my cufflinks as I walked down the marble hallway, each step echoing faintly, measured like the beat of a war drum. The double doors to the conference room were slightly ajar. I pushed the door open. The conference room in my father’s penthouse was always too cold—sleek marble floors, floor-to-ceiling windows that opened up to the skyline.Victor was already seated at the far end of the sleek, obsidian table, one ankle crossed ove

AUDREY POVThe evening had been exactly what I needed—a breath, a moment to just exist, without the weight of everything pressing down on me. But it wasn’t just the dinner that had given me this sense of calm. It was Michell. The way he’d set everything up, so carefully, so intentionally. It was like he’d planned this night just for me—to remind me that I could still have these small moments of happiness, even when everything else felt like it was unraveling. I looked over at him, still sitting by the table, looking at me with those intense eyes of his. The kind that made it impossible to lie to him—or myself. “You’re quiet,” he said, his voice gentle, like he didn’t want to break the peace we’d built up tonight.“I was just thinking about how much I needed this,” I replied softly. I felt a bit silly saying it out loud, but it was true. Estelle’s return had hung like a dark cloud over everything, and as much as I tried to push it out of my mind, it was always there—lingering, just

MICHELL POVI found them in the garden.Amelia was sitting cross-legged on a blanket, holding a daisy crown that Estelle was helping her tie together. Her laughter rang like bells—unrestrained, bubbling up every few seconds. The kind of laugh I hadn’t heard from her since the last time she’d won something at school. But it wasn’t Audrey sitting beside her. It was Estelle.Wearing white. Always white. Like she was trying to brand herself as purity reincarnated.I stayed by the glass doors, watching.“You know,” Estelle was saying, her voice low and conspiratorial, “your mother used to wear crowns like this. She said they made her feel like a woodland queen.”“Really?” Amelia giggled. “Did she really call herself that?”Estelle laughed. “She had such an imagination. Just like you.”She reached out and tucked a loose curl behind Amelia’s ear. And the way she did it—it wasn’t just affection. It was possession. Like she wanted to rewrite her role in this child’s memory.I didn’t like it. I

AUDREY POVI knew he didn’t sleep. He hadn’t said a word about it, and hadn't needed to. But I’d felt it in the way his body remained taut beneath the sheets, in the way his hand never left mine even when I drifted off. His mind had been far away—haunted, as always. And now, morning sunlight flooded the estate like everything was fine. But it wasn’t.I could feel it in the strained silence between him and Estelle over breakfast. The sound of cutlery and Amelia’s cheerful humming filled the space, but Michell hadn’t looked up once. Not when Estelle complimented the decor, not when Amelia talked about the science project she was building with bottle caps and glow sticks.Estelle, on the other hand, looked like she belonged.Too much and too quickly. She was good at smiling. At tilting her head just enough to make it seem sincere. She wore guilt like it was a designer scarf—elegant, tasteful, a little too polished. But Amelia didn’t notice.“So your mom and I,” Estelle was saying gently

Michell povI heard a crash just as I stepped out of the home office.“Amelia…” I warned, already bracing myself.“She started it!” Amelia squealed, barefoot and giggling as she darted past me like a blur of sunshine and wild curls.“Traitor!” Audrey’s voice echoed a second later. She skidded into the hallway wearing one of my shirts—my shirt—and holding what looked suspiciously like a pair of water guns.I blinked.“Why are my cufflinks floating in a bowl of jelly?” I asked flatly, pointing toward the mess on the console table.Audrey froze. “That… may or may not be part of our science experiment-slash-war strategy.”I opened my mouth.“Don’t. Just don’t.” She held up a water gun like it was loaded with truth serum. “We’ll clean it. Pinky promise.”Amelia peeked out from behind the couch with a triumphant grin. “He looks mad.”“I’m not mad,” I muttered, dragging a hand down my face. “Just… confused. And slightly alarmed.”“You’re cute when you’re confused,” Audrey teased.Later in th

MICHELL POVThe towering glass walls of my father's penthouse gleamed under the late afternoon sun as I stepped in. The silence inside wasn’t unusual, but today it felt heavier. I found him standing by the massive window, a tumbler of untouched whiskey in his hand, his gaze distant—anchored somewhere between memory and regret. He turned as I approached. “You came.”“I did.” I tucked my hands into my pockets and nodded. “Thaylon’s staying.”His brow lifted, confusion flickering across his features. “What?”“I spoke with their head team. Explained the situation. Apologized for the mess. Reassured them we could still deliver—without Victor.”He blinked, processing. “They agreed to continue?”“They did.”He sat down slowly, almost stunned, the whiskey forgotten on the glass table. A moment passed, thick with the things we hadn’t said for years. Then he finally spoke, his voice quieter than I’d ever heard it.“I didn’t think you’d be able to pull it off. I—” He paused, swallowed. “I thoug

AUDREY POV.Two days had passed since Victor’s sentencing, and something in the house had shifted—like a storm had finally passed, and the sun had dared to peek through the curtains. The air no longer felt thick with secrets. The walls no longer echoed with tension. There was calm. Not the kind of explosive relief that made people cheer, but the quiet kind. The kind that came when hearts were tired but held a little hope again.Michell had barely spoken that morning at breakfast. He’d sat with Amelia, brushing a gentle hand over her head as she ate her cereal, her legs swinging beneath the chair, humming a tune under her breath. Then he’d looked at me with that quiet look of resolve.“Today,” he’d mouthed.I’d nodded. I’d known it was coming. After breakfast, he took the day off work—no calls, no interruptions. He spent the morning going through an old box I hadn’t seen before, buried deep in his closet. I’d watched from the hallway as he gently sifted through photographs, small tr

But something like it.Ethan and Audrey were waiting just outside. He stood with a protective stance beside her, but I could see the lines of tension on his face, the way he kept glancing at me like he was checking I hadn't shattered under the weight of everything.Audrey... she was pale, her arms wrapped around herself as if the truth had chilled her to the bone. Her eyes searched mine, and for the first time in a long while, I let her see me—really see me.“I’m proud of you,” she said softly. Her voice was tentative, like she wasn’t sure if now was the time. But it was. It meant everything.I gave a short nod. “Thank you… both of you.”Ethan placed a firm hand on my shoulder and squeezed. The arrest of Viktor Garcia—the bastard—had become a spectacle. News had spread like wildfire, and now, everyone was clamoring for a glimpse into our shattered world. As I stood there, watching Viktor, still in handcuffs, being processed, I couldn't shake the feeling of disbelief. This was the moment I had worked so hard for. The moment I had planned for. When my father arrived, the chaos momentarily stopped. His expression was unreadable, but I could see it in his eyes: the pain, the shock, the betrayal. He stepped toward Viktor, the son he had taken in, brought from the slum. But even he couldn’t deny the truth. He stopped in front of Viktor, and his voice came out in a broken whisper. “I raised you… you were my son. The night was closing in fast, and I could feel the weight of the plan on my shoulders.I had waited for this moment for weeks. Hell, I had been waiting for this my entire life. To see Viktor finally break. To see the man who thought he could destroy me cower at my feet.
