Chapter 343

Author: Summer Knowles
Had her actions already been exposed? Did James know?

Charlotte’s heart raced wildly, panic creeping in. What would she do if he had found out?

James stared down at her with sharp, cold eyes. His voice was detached as he said, “If you claim you don’t understand, then I’ll take your word for it. Just focus on being Mrs. Chancer.”

With that, he gave her a symbolic pat on the back before brushing past her and walking away.

Charlotte felt a chill run through her entire body. What did he mean by that? Was he warning her?

The thought sent a wave of anger through her. She wanted to sweep everything off the desk in frustration, but this was James’s study—she didn’t dare.

Forcing herself to calm down, she reminded herself that her previous actions had already made James weary of her. She needed to rebuild the trust she once had.

As James entered the bedroom, Charlotte’s voice called out from behind him. “Are you leaving again?”

He turned to see her standing there in a

“How could he?” Charlotte silently questioned, her heart heavy with resentment. How could James treat her like this?---Adams University.Sarah was in the middle of a meeting when Dean Larson informed her she would be attending a symposium in the northern part of the city. To ensure she wouldn’t have to return late at night, the school had even reserved a room for her at the Misty Island Hotel. This news quickly reached Zachary. That evening, Sarah checked into the Misty Island Hotel, unaware of the unexpected turn her night would take. Late at night, Zachary found himself at the hotel, almost as if drawn there by an unseen force. Standing outside her room, he noticed the window was slightly ajar. "Sign here."James Chancer’s cold, deep voice broke the silence as he slid the divorce papers across the table. Sarah looked up at him, managing a bitter smile. So this was it. No wonder he'd surprisingly called this morning to say he'd be home tonight, wanting to talk. She'd been happy all day, only to find out this was what he wanted to discuss... Three years of marriage, coming to an end.Sarah Sanders took the papers with trembling hands, her voice barely a whisper, "Do we really have to divorce?"James frowned as he studied the woman who'd been Mrs. Chancer for three years. She must have just finished cleaning - sweat still glistened on her forehead, exhaustion and confusion evident in her eyes behind those thick glasses. Gentle and modest, but utterly plain. This unremarkable woman had been Mrs. Chancer for three years.James put out his cigarette, his tone leaving no room for argument, "Just sign it. Charlotte's back, and I don't want her to get the wrong idea."Sarah felt

Sarah listened to the conversation outside the study, her eyes downcast.During her years as James’s wife, she had given everything to her mother-in-law and sister-in-law Lucy. When Lucy had her car accident, Sarah had stayed at the hospital for days. She'd always shown nothing but respect and care for Mrs. Chancer. Yet it seemed no amount of devotion could change how the Chancer family saw her.Shortly after, Scarlett Larson called, her voice tired, "Sasa, are you sure you won't come? You used to love hunting outdoors, and you'd get to race cars too."Sarah froze. Memories she'd buried deep came flooding back. Before marrying James, she'd loved hunting, racing cars, and good wine. Then she met James at the Larson estate and fell head over heels. After falling for him, she learned through others that James preferred gentle, trad wife. So she'd gradually given up everything she loved.Three years had passed, and she'd almost forgotten who she used to be.On the other end of the lin

Sarah left the Chancer mansion without looking back, wheeling her suitcase behind her. Outside, she found Scarlett leaning out of her car window, blowing her a playful kiss. "Get in, baby! Time to celebrate!"Though Scarlett called it a celebration, knowing Sarah was freshly divorced and likely down, she just took her to a music-themed restaurant. When she heard James's reason for the divorce, Scarlett couldn't help but scoff, "Charlotte Garnett again? What's so special about her that James is this obsessed?"Sarah stirred her coffee listlessly. "No idea..."She'd never actually met James's dream woman. Charlotte had already left for abroad when Sarah first met James. She'd only heard that Charlotte was gentle, accomplished, and understanding. When James had fought with his grandfather over her, Charlotte had been mature enough to convince James to let it go - which had led to Sarah's arranged marriage with James.Seeing Sarah's reluctance to discuss it further, Scarlett changed th

Sarah stopped in her tracks. Her expression remained calm, but she didn't take Charlotte's offered hand.As Charlotte's smile faltered, James stepped in to ease the tension, "Grandfather heard about us,” he said in a deep and restrained voice. “He wants you to join us for dinner tonight. Your phone was off, so I came to get you.""I see." Sarah checked her phone - it was indeed dead. She nodded. "I'll charge it and join you later."The message was clear- she wouldn't be going with them.James frowned. "I can wait while you-""No need," Sarah cut him off with a smile. "I'll make my own way there."When he fell silent, Sarah glanced at Charlotte. "And tomorrow at nine, if you're free, let's get the divorce papers finalized."For some reason, James felt unsettled. "Why the rush?"Sarah nodded firmly. “Cause it's urgent."James was taken aback, his expression darkening as he led Charlotte away. After a few steps, Charlotte whispered something intimately to James, then turned back

Lost in his thoughts, James felt a warm hand on his. He turned to see Charlotte looking at him with concern. "Are you feeling okay? Would you like some soup?"James shook his head. After greeting Richard, Sarah quietly took her seat, pointedly ignoring their interaction.Richard let out a scoff of disgust.Dinner at the Chancers' was traditionally eaten in silence. Sarah had little appetite but picked at her food to be polite. After dinner, Richard held her back. "I've heard about you and James. Don't worry, Sarah. You're the only daughter-in-law this family recognizes."He cast a cold look at Charlotte and James, their faces stiffening at his words. "If anyone should leave this family, it should be the homewrecker and this excuse for a man!"Sarah shifted uncomfortably.James's jaw tightened. Beside him, Charlotte clutched his hand, her eyes filling with tears, looking every bit the victim.Richard ignored them both, drumming his fingers on the table with a sigh. "Your father

Richard slammed his teacup down, his voice heavy with disappointment. "Since the day she joined this family, your mother has done nothing but tear her down. Every time she got sick, she had to handle it alone. Whenever Lucy wanted the latest designer bag or jewelry, Sarah was the one footing the bill. Night after night, she'd wait up for you, keeping your dinner warm. And that time you made yourself sick pining over Charlotte? Sarah spent hours making you homemade soup, burning her hands raw in the process."He sighed deeply. "Even when she lost her father and lived with the Larsons, she never had to do any of that. James, Sarah gave you everything. Charlotte brings you one bowl of soup, and suddenly she's the perfect woman?"James's fists clenched as he listened, his eyes darkening like storm clouds.Sarah knew nothing of this conversation. For once, she slept well that night. The next morning at eight-thirty, she called James about finalizing the divorce, "Mr. Chancer, if you're

Even though her knowledge was still intact, could she really return to her field after all these years?Professor Wells sensed her hesitation. "There's no rush," he said kindly. "But if you're interested, I'm here to help.""Thank you, Professor." Sarah felt a wave of warmth. Despite her absence these past years, he still cared about his former student. After discussing his health and chatting for a while longer, he even invited her to stay for lunch. At that moment, a sharp pain hit Zachary’s chest. He realized something had changed—something fundamental—but even so, he wasn’t ready to give up on Sarah. “Sasa, yesterday Vivian said she was in a car accident…” “Zachary, do you know that what happened at the stables was her doing?” Sarah’s eyes widened as she waited for his answer. Zachary hesitated before nodding slowly. “I know.” “You knew and said nothing? She tried to hurt me, Zachary. You’ve let me down.” Sarah’s voice was icy. “Tell Vivian, my patience has its limits.” With that, she shoved Zachary out of the counseling room, handing the gift back to him. “We’re done, Zachary. Since we’ve broken up, there’s no need to stay in touch.” She slammed the door shut and pulled the curtains closed. ---Zachary walked back to his office, looking utterly lost. His assistant quickly approached him. “Mr. Reynolds, Miss Wilson is here.” He entered the office immediately and found Vivian sitting in his chair, a playf

Sarah drank the rest of her wine in one gulp, placed the glass back on the table, and said, “I’m going to rest.” “Alright,” Melvin replied, clinking his glass before sitting back down. His gaze lingered on his phone, his expression complicated. Sarah returned to her room, tidied up the gifts she’d received, and went to freshen up. By the time she sat on the edge of her bed, it was already 11:30 p.m. She held the bracelet Zachary had given her, lost in thought. Why hadn’t he come? What could have held him up? In just thirty minutes, her birthday would be over. She had received so many heartfelt wishes, but not his. While she was deep in thought, her phone chimed with a message. Picking it up, she saw a multimedia message containing text and a photo. The photo showed Zachary fast asleep. Her heart skipped a beat. Below the image was a message from Vivian: “Miss Sanders, this is Vivian. First, happy birthday! Zachary really wanted to attend your party, but he could

Watching them goof around, Sarah couldn’t help but laugh. As she laughed, she suddenly felt something cold on her face. She looked over to see Mia grinning mischievously—there was cream on her face. “Mia, you’ve turned naughty!” Sarah exclaimed, standing up from her seat and grabbing a plate of cream. She chased after Mia with playful determination. Melvin sipped his red wine and smiled as he watched them. His gaze drifted toward the front door, and he frowned slightly. Was Zachary really not coming? Earlier, before the cake was brought out, Melvin had noticed the disappointment in Sarah’s eyes. Though she hadn’t said anything outright, Melvin, who had watched her grow up, could read her emotions like an open book. Still, at least she seemed happy now. Lost in thought, Melvin suddenly felt a gust of wind behind him. Turning around, he saw Sarah. Her hand was already reaching for his cheek. Before he could react, Sarah smeared cream across his face with a triumph

During dinner, Scarlett and Steven sat together at the table, which was loaded with skewers and desserts. Steven picked up an egg tart, took one bite, and immediately put it down with a look of disdain. “This egg tart is awful. The crust is way too greasy, and the filling tastes weird—like it’s gone bad.” Scarlett rolled her eyes and tried a bite herself. “I think it’s fine.” Ignoring her, Steven kept eating while complaining. “This grilled meat is terrible! The chef didn’t even bother to do a good job—it tastes gamey and smells bad.” “And this fried pork chop? My God, it’s dripping with oil!” … As he kept eating and grumbling, Scarlett couldn’t take it anymore. She grabbed the food out of his hands. “If you’re going to complain so much, then stop eating! These dishes were made by the chefs Melvin hired. If you don’t like it, why don’t you cook something yourself?” Steven looked at her, stunned. “Are you kidding? My cooking is way too expensive for this!” Scarle

“If it’s nothing, then why won’t you show me?” James took a deep breath and handed the photo album to Charlotte. “Satisfied now?” Charlotte took the album and flipped through it, photo by photo, noticing that most of them were pictures of James alone. “This belongs to Sarah? Why is her stuff here?” Charlotte frowned. She didn’t want Sarah to have any connection to them. James let out a cold, mocking laugh. “She probably forgot about it.” Charlotte didn’t press further, but she couldn’t shake the image of James’s expression while looking at the photo earlier—his eyes had been heavy with emotion, complicated and full of longing. Sensing James’s growing impatience, Charlotte quickly tried to explain. “James, I just feel insecure sometimes. I’m afraid you don’t care about me anymore. It’s only because I care so much about you.” “I know,” James said, his voice laced with exhaustion. ---That day was Sarah’s birthday. The venue was set at Melvin’s villa. The outdoor

It’s fine, Vivian will save her this time. Lucy had only pushed Sarah because of Vivian. He always did.At home, Mrs. Chancer cried and argued with James, pleading for him to help Lucy. “She’s your sister!”James, however, remained stone-faced. “Mom, how many times has this happened? She needs to learn her lesson.”With that, he went into his study and locked the door behind him. This time, James had made up his mind. He wasn’t going to bail Lucy out again. It was time for her to grow up.Inside the study, James began searching through his things. He remembered that Sarah had once left a photo album in here. He suddenly recalled that it was tied to one of the times Sarah had gotten hurt—she had even taken a photo of herself to "commemorate" the incident. After nearly half an hour of rummaging, he finally found a

How could you even think about calling the police? You might not care about the Chancer’s reputation, but I do!”Just then, the door opened. James entered the room, looking annoyed.“What’s going on now?” he asked impatiently.Lindsey’s expression darkened as she turned to him. “James, some brother you are! Your sister pushed your wife into the river, and all you can say is that?”James glanced at Sarah, then at Lucy.“Lucy, what happened?”Lucy’s eyes filled with tears as she protested, “No, James! She’s accusing me unfairly. I didn’t push her! She fell in on her own, and I tried to save her. That’s how I got scratched!”Mrs. Chancer immediately chimed in to support Lucy. “James, I told you from the beginning not to marry her. Look at what’s happening now—she’s teaming up with outsiders to bully Lucy! Lucy
