"We owe each other nothing."

Hayden, returning from his office, was informed by the maid that Wyneth was still sleeping, so he ascended the stairs. But just as he reached the door, he overheard Wyneth's proclamation. His hand froze on the door handle. 'We owe each other nothing? After all she did for me without me knowing, she doesn't think I owe her?'

Hayden had not done anything for her. After coming out of coma, he was always busy with work. He had not even noticed she was living in the room next door until he inadvertently gave her room away. She left because she was wronged. Yet, she said now that they owed each other nothing. And, it seemed she held no grudges against him. Hayden should have been happy with this outcome. But inexplicably, not an ounce of joy bubbled up in him. On the contrary, the inexplicable flame inside him blazed even brighter. After a moment of thought, he twisted the doorknob and walked in.
