I didn’t close the door while I packed my clothes and my few personal things in a duffel bag. Steph didn’t come, and I knew damn well why: she didn’t believe I had the guts to leave her. Well, that made two of us, and yet, there I was, packing to leave.

She waited in the living area, with that smug smirk still pursing her lips, even when she saw me head to the front door with the duffel bag.

“If things go south, I won’t mention you,” I said, putting my jacket on. “But if push comes to shove and they discover you’re here too, I’ll tell them you don’t know I’m in town. I’ll tell them I came looking for you and still haven’t found you.”

She nodded, rolling her eyes. She really didn’t believe I could ever leave her and live to tell the tale. Jeez! How arrogant was that? I opened the front door and hung my keys by hers.

“Take care, Steph.”

“Good luck with your CEO,” she replied.

“Thanks. I’m gonna need it.”

I met her eyes for the last time.
