A hot wave washed over me, then a cold one. My heart hammered my chest.

I had no idea what Big Ellie could’ve sent me, but whatever it was, Steph couldn’t see it. And how was I to hide it from her? That son of a bitch! Sending me something to my home address! I breathed deep, set my jaw and walked back into our apartment.

Lucky me, Steph was still on Zoom, so she could hardly glance away from her screen with a questioning frown and a nod at the box. And I shrugged and shook my head on the way to the bedroom. I closed the door between us and threw the box on the bed, taking my hands to my hips.

I needed a minute to bring myself to open the delivery. The brown paper covered a black shirt box, no marks on it. Inside, under a creaky tissue paper sheet, I found a shirt. Which is what shirt boxes usually hold. White, short sleeves. My initials and the company’s round logo had been embroidered on the chest pocket. In black. I’d never seen another employee with a shirt like that. And the logo
