Chapter 168

Later that night, I lay in bed, unable to sleep. I felt a little glimmer of hope that he was starting to remember. Maybe that means his memory is gradually coming back.

It was past three in the morning when I finally dozed off, only to jump awake when I heard a strangled cry from the room next door. I push the covers off and rush out of the bedroom to Cole's room next door.

I hurry into the bedroom and turn the lamp on beside his bed. Cole's eyes were squeezed shut, and he was vigorously shaking his head, whispering 'No' again and again. He's having a nightmare. I crawl up on the bed beside him and touch his face, pearls of cold sweat rolling down his face.

"Cole. Hey, it's okay, baby, wake up," I say, shaking him a little. "Cole." I jump when he suddenly shoots up with a gasp, panting, trying to catch his breath. His eyes dart around the room, disoriented. "You're okay. It's just a nightmare, baby. You're safe," I whisper soothingly, cupping his face with my ha
