Everyone else had gone home as well as Roni and her husband and Alessandro as well. It was just Dad and I alone in the house.

He had spent the whole of the previous night playing his music and wailing away the whole night.

I knocked on his bedroom door.

“Come in,” he replied

I twisted the door handle and opened the door. I found my father seated my his radio player and photo albums scattered around him and a bottle of wine.

“Come in, my cupcake,” he answered.

I walked in and sat next to him.

“Don't tell me that there are more people here. If there are, just tell them that I am asleep, and I will see them later,” he said

“Oh no, there is no one else. It's just me.” I answered

“I was meant to ask you, how was your walk with Alessandro?” He questioned.

Just him bringing up the name sent chills down my spine. I thought of the kiss, the conversation, his scent and the hug. I hated that I thought of him at the mention of his name.

“Tori?” my dad called out.

“Oh, I am sorry. I zoned

I froze at my door, wondering what he meant by Roni mentioning something. My father had already hurried off with his cheerful and happiness while I was stuck wondering how he found the time to set up a date for me. After a few minutes, I came back to my senses and rushed to get my phone. I scrolled through my contacts to call Roni. She did not pick up after the first attempt, so I tried again, and she eventually picked up after 4 rings. “What the hell did you tell Dad?” I asked in a low voice“Well, good afternoon to you, too,” she replied “Okay, okay. Whatever…Good afternoon. Okay, so what did you tell Dad?” I continued to ask “What do you mean?” she asked me back.“Roni, all the times you play dumb, I like it, and I sometimes find it cute and funny, but right now is not one of those times.” I answered irritatedly, “So, cut with the crap and tell me what the hell you told Dad.”“Now you know how it feels when someone acts silly.” she laughed on the other end of the phone. “What’s the occasion?” he asked as his eyes continued to scan my body.My father had also reached the door and peeped around me to see who was standing there. Hearing Alessandro ask me what the occasion was ached my heart, slightly. If he was asking, it meant that he was not the one I would go with. It meant that my father had matched me with someone random. But why was I surprised? There was no way my father was going to set me up with his friend. “May I come in?” Alessandro asked“OH!” I stepped aside and let him enter the house. My father also did not look too pleased. He went back to his phone and continued to play his music loudly as he danced around. “Is he okay?” Alessandro questioned “Yeah, he is just re-living his high school moments as he goes down memory lane thinking about my mother,” I answered “Do you think that’s okay?” “Yes, I think it is okay. He has not hurt anyone. He seems happy. I mean, he is peaceful.” I answered. Alessandro nodded and we both continued to

“Right, I don’t want to keep you guys waiting too long. Go and have fun.” my father saidI turned around and gave my father a slight hug and then looked over at Alessandro who was too ashamed to look at me. It was as if he saw the pain in my eyes of having to go with someone that I already did not find attractive from the get-go. “Have fun kids!” my father called out as we walked towards the car. His car looked better than the last date’s car. It did not look like it would delay and die down but I walked past Alessandro’s big car. It was different from the one I had seen him drive before but I just knew it was his because I knew how my father’s car looked and it had the name ‘RUSSO’ on the number plate, once again. I dreamt of hopping into that car instead and driving away with Alessandro instead. “Let me open the door for you,” he said as he hurried to the passenger side. I hoped he was not insisting on opening the door for me because it had some faults. I prayed that he was actu

“Uhmmm…” I said as I tried to push his arm away politely. “Oh, I am so sorry. I got too comfortable too fast.” he sighed. His face turned red as he blushed from embarrassment. “It’s okay,” I said. I felt bad for making him feel bad. “I wouldn’t do anything that would make you feel uncomfortable. I am really sorry,” he said again“It’s okay, Jay. Don’t worry about it.” I replied. He got the remote and pressed a few buttons and the huge screen lit up. He stood up from the seat. I thought he was still feeling bad about the whole arm thing but instead, he was only going to switch off the lights of the room. “I hope you’re not afraid of the dark.” he chuckled nervously “Uhm… the dark is okay,” I answered but I did not join in on the giggling. But sooner, he switched on smaller lights. They were a weird mixture of green and blue and they made the place look aesthetic. “I usually like to watch movies with the lights like this,” he said as he walked back to the couch and plopped himse

She smiled as she walked to the table in front of us and placed the tray of cookies and then walked out of the room. By then, I had slowly shifted away from Jay. “Was that your mother?” I asked as soon as she was completely gone “No, that’s why I called her ‘Mom’.” he sarcastically replied “Really? You think this is the time for that?” I questioned impatiently“What?!” he called out. I had managed to shift away from him completely and face the black screen with my arms folded. “Why is your mother bringing cookies?” I questioned “Because she knows I have a guest over,” he responded “No, you’re not understanding me.” I sighed “What are you trying to say then?” “Does your mother live here? Because why is she bringing baked goods here? Unless she’s your neighbour and doesn’t mind baking and bringing them for her grown son.” He kept quiet. It was as if he was trying his hardest to think of a reply. Something that would not make him sound weird after he had managed to impress me.

I poured myself a glass of water and gulped on it. “Would you like to join us? We are drinking wine.” Alessandro offered after my father had chilled a bit and sat down and continued to sip.“Uhm…”“...She does not drink wine.” my father quickly replied“Come on, just one sip. It’s just wine.” Alessandro answered. I just continued drinking my water and eventually walked off to my bedroom. I could still hear the two of them bickering and I wondered if my mother’s death had something to do with them slowly falling apart. I pulled out my phone and tried to call Roni but she did not pick up. She quickly texted me saying that she was too busy to reply. So, I threw myself on my bed and just started to daydream. I thought about Jay and how well the whole thing was going with him. I thought about how I first judged him just because I thought he was not my type and then how he managed to impress me and things were starting to work out well only for me to discover that there were all lies. We immediately separated and panted as we both stared at each other. That was the second time that day that my kiss had been interrupted and by a parent. “Oh? You’re still here!” My father said in shock as soon as his eyes landed on Alessandro “Yes, I am still here. I am a little bit tipsy. I am not sure if I should drive home when I am like this.” Alessandro replied.I wanted to laugh at his response. I was told a few minutes prior to that, that Alessandro lived nearby or at least not too far from our place. So, I thought that if he just pressed the accelerator the whole ride, he would be able to make it home, with no worries. But what did I know? That was technically the first time I had ever consumed something alcoholic so I did not know much about drinking and driving. “Oh okay. Well, you can always sleep in Roni’s bedroom since she is not around and then you can drive back home when you’re ready.” my father answered“Thank you.” Alessandro smiled“Okay, now could you please g

My father stood up from the bed and walked out of the room while Alessandro followed behind. I remained sitting on my bed. I had finished the last drop of wine in my glass and wondered if I should get more. “Tori!” my father called out my name. I placed my glass down and walked out of the room as slowly and as carefully as possible, trying to ensure that I did not fall. I felt the room slowly spinning around as I stumbled to the living room. “What are you doing here?” I asked as soon as my eyes landed on Christopher. It was as if he heard us talking about him because why did he show up right at that time? Right after I had just poured my whole heart out to my dad about him and right after I had just told my father that I was letting him go. I was allowing him to do as he wanted. “Can I come in?” he asked. He was holding a bouquet of flowers and he wore full black. That was the first time he tried to look decent, apart from the wedding. “I don’t that would be best…” my dad start

I woke up much later than usual the next morning, the weight of sleep still clinging to my body as I slowly sat up. The room was quiet, the faint scent of lavender lingering in the air—a familiar trace of Roni. Glancing over, I realized she was already gone. The neatly folded pyjamas on the small chair in the corner confirmed it; she had woken up early, tidied up after herself, and probably gone about her morning without disturbing me.Of course, she had already showered too. That was just like Roni—always efficient, always put together. She had always been that kid—the one who wanted to impress the parents by being the perfect daughter. She’d wake up at the crack of dawn, get out of bed on time without anyone needing to call her and move through the house like a well-rehearsed routine. By the time the rest of us stumbled out of bed, she had already prepared breakfast, set the table, and even started cleaning, as if proving her worth with every chore she completed. And after she got

“What in God’s name is happening out here?” my father questioned, clearly baffled and annoyed. His voice was sharp, the irritation in his tone unmistakable as he looked from Russo to me and back again. It was the worst way to be caught. My hands were still on Russo’s bare chest, and he was only in his towel while I stood there in my skimpy pyjamas. The dimly lit corridor felt suffocating as I tried to pull my hands away, but it was too late. My father’s glare felt like it could burn right through us. I could barely breathe, knowing I was standing there like this with no explanation to offer. My heart pounded in my chest, and every nerve in my body screamed for me to run and hide, but I was frozen in place, unsure of how to make this nightmare stop.“Uhmm…” I started, my mind racing for something, anything, to say. But nothing came.“Victoria, what the hell is going on out here?” my father asked again, his voice rising, now laced with frustration and confusion. His eyes flicked between

What was it that you wanted to say to me?” I asked, trying to bring us back to the moment before everything got tangled up.“Uhmm…” he stammered, clearly not focused, his mind still reeling from the tension in the air.He turned away, facing the wall as he shoved his hand in his pants, clearly trying to adjust the situation. After a few moments, he turned back to face me, the bulge now less visible, though his flushed face told the story of how much he was trying to regain composure.“I forgot,” he sighed, running a hand through his hair in frustration.“Really?” I raised an eyebrow, not sure if I believed him.“Yeah, I’m sorry. I lost focus once I saw you like that.” He sighed again, his gaze drifting.“It’s okay,” I nodded, trying to brush it off.“Tori!” I heard Roni’s voice calling from outside her bedroom, interrupting the moment.I slowly walked away from Russo, the weight of the moment still hanging in the air. It was as if she hadn’t heard him at all—or maybe she was choosing not to."Roni!" he called again, louder this time, his tone edged with frustration and concern.Reluctantly, Roni turned and walked away, heading toward my father, leaving me alone to stare at Russo. I hesitated, unsure whether I wanted to talk to him and risk hearing what Roni might say later—or simply ignore him altogether.“Tori, could we talk for a moment?” Russo asked again, his tone firm yet uncertain.“Uh… let me get dressed first, and then we’ll see,” I replied quickly, not waiting for his response before turning and walking away.I hurried to my bedroom, grabbing the nearest outfit and slipping into it in a rush. Just as I finished, the door creaked open, and Roni stepped inside, closing it firmly behind her.“So, looks like we’re roommates for the night,” Roni whispered.I frowned. “What do you mean?”“Russo is stayin

My eyes widened when Joey finished speaking and then continued to speak. Bash and Roni came back into the kitchen, holding a few more dishes that were used during the dinner. I now could not take my eyes off them after hearing what Joey had just said. I tried to imagine them dating each other or at least having anything else more than a friendship. “Joey, that’s enough,” Bash said sounding irritated when he found her still adding a few more drops of vodka in her cup. “Could I have another sip, please,” Roni said as she reached out for the cup. I watched in surprise as Roni drank some of the weird combination in Joey’s cup and did not even cringe. It was as if she regularly did this. “Are you sure you don’t want even a sip?” Joey offered me the cup as she handed it to me. I shrugged and slowly walked closer to her and took the cup. I took a sip and surprisingly it did not taste weird. “So, how does it taste?” Bash asked before I could even swallow it. “It tastes good,” I answer

“Uhm…” I froze. “Oh please don’t act shocked or anything.” she laughed. She pulled out more dishwashing liquid and handed it to me. “No, I am genuinely confused.” I sighed“Why though? We did not. He only escorted me and then we returned to the dining room.” I responded. “Really? So, he was not lying?” she asked “Yeah, we did not kiss or anything like that,” I answered “Dammit! Now your sister owes me like fifty bucks or probably even more.” she groaned. “Anyway, let’s go back to the kitchen. We will continue this conversation later.” We walked back to the kitchen with me feeling so confused. So that is what the two of them were probably betting on. We walked back to the kitchen to find Roni and Bash giggling about something. “Are we interrupting something?” Jo asked as she started lau

We all froze. Roni and I slowly turned to look at our father wondering how he was going to answer that question. He looked at Roni and then at me and then gave a slight nod as if we were supposed to know what it meant. “Uhm… my better half.” he started to speak with his voice shaking a bit. It definitely still pained him. I knew it did. We were all hurt by her sudden death but I felt like everything was rushed over and we did not get enough time to feel the pain or the grief. “My better half passed away not too long ago.” my father finally replied as I saw one tear drop escape his eye and trickle down his cheek. He casually wiped it away and then smiled weakly after that. “I am so sorry. I apologize for asking.” Joey gasped. “I am sorry for your loss,” Bash said. “I am sorry.” Katie also finally spoke. She also looked genuinely shocked about what she had just heard. So, I wondered how close Katie and my father were if my father could not even break the news to her about losin

He had long reached the dining room while I was still stood by the bathroom door trying to understand what he meant by that. I eventually found my way back to the dining room with everyone’s eyes on me - including Bash. “Are you okay?” Katie asked “Yep, I am good.” I replied and quickly grabbed a plate to serve myself. Katie and my father were still flirting with each other and making all these weird noises while I continued to stare at Bash trying to read his face. “Give me my fifty.” Jo whispered to Roni who sighed. “Fifty for what?” I questioned “None of your business.” Roni answered quickly. “I will give it to you later.” She answered as she turned her head to Joey. I served myself some food and then worriedly and slowly walked to my seat next to Bash. He pulled out the chair for me and patted it gently signalling me to sit down. “Thank you.” I whispered“Yep, you owe me like another fifty.” Jo laughed while looking at Roni. “Most probably.” Roni replied.“What’s going o
