Leonardo's POV.
Two days ago, the Don of my gang made an announcement. An announcement that ignited a challenging race for the throne of the Mafia. A race between my cousin and I. I didn't know why he made the announcement. It had already been decided…or not decided publicly, but it was a known fact that I, the sottocapo to the Don would ascend to the position of Don after his retirement in three months. Now the rules have changed. Luca, my lousy cousin, the Don’s son, was in the picture. And he was now contending against me for the position of Don. We both had one thing to achieve to determine the future leader. We both had to get married and stay married until the Don’s retirement. Few minutes ago, one of my men informed me that Luca had gotten a wife but was yet to present her to the Don. Which meant I had until then to get married and present my wife to the Don first. I stared blankly at the lady before me with a raised brow. “Get her out of sight.” I said with a wave of my hand. She must be one of those cleaners who think they can smuggle their way into their wealthy customers' lives. “No wait. I'm willing to be your wife. I promise not to get attached and I totally understand your terms.” the lady ranted and I halted my steps. I turned to her with a curious gaze. “Were you eavesdropping on me?” I asked in my menacing tone. I saw her shiver slightly but managed to hold my glare. Something many couldn't. “I know you need a wife urgently. I need money urgently. We can help each other.” She said. My eyes thinned on her. Then I eyed her from head to toe. Slender body, red hair and a perfect shape. Certainly the kind of women I like. But not the one I need right now. “No.” I said and brushed past her. “Wait,” I felt her hand on my arm and I turned to her sharply with a hard glare. She gasped. “Get your hand off me.” I said through gritted teeth. She slowly withdrew her hand to herself. “Get married to me. I will give you your space if you pay me.” She said. I had to admit, she sounded convincing. But it wasn't about her, I was worried about invading my space. She looked so hard to resist, I feared I might break my composure living in the same space with her. “Sir, it's him.” My bodyguard said as he handed me my phone. “Talk to me.” I said as soon as I took the call. “It's Luca sir. He just announced his wedding is scheduled for tomorrow.” My private spy conveyed in a grave tone. My eyes widened and my grip around the phone tightened as rage welled within me. I must not allow Luca to present his wife before me. “Just keep me updated.” I said and handed the phone back to my bodyguard. “How much do you want for this?” I asked the lady who was still transfixed before me. Her expression spelt bewilderment for a few seconds before she collected herself. “A hundred and twenty thousand dollars.” “And?” I asked, refusing to believe that could be the only thing she would want. To my utter bewilderment, she shook her head negatively. “Okay. Let's go.” I said. We began to move but I saw her limping. I furrowed my eyebrows. It would be a struggle for her to walk out of the casino as it seemed her legs were hurt, but I had no time to waste. So I bent over and carried her on my shoulder. She felt light, so it wasn't a problem. “What are you doing?” She asked with a gasp. “I have no time to waste.” I replied and continued moving. If Luca was planning to get married tomorrow, I needed to get married today. The Don will not be so pleased to learn of my marriage in such short notice but at the moment, I couldn't care less. Securing the position that has always been mine was my utmost priority. I dropped her inside my limousine and took my seat. “Wait, where are we going?’ she asked as the driver ignited the engine. “To get you ready.” I stated without facing her. Even then, I could feel confusion oozing from her. “But…get me ready for what exactly?” “The marriage. Or have you changed your mind?” I asked, again, without facing her. “Oh no no,” she said quickly, “Just that…we’re getting married now?” Now I faced her, looking her straight in the eyes so she knew I was damn serious. “Yes we are. In fact,” I faced my bodyguard, “inform everyone to meet up at the mansion where my wedding will take place. Everyone except Luca.” “Yes sir.” I wouldn't want that bastard wrecking my wedding. “But…I still have to tell my father…and my mother…and…” “You can tell them now.” I told her the address to my family mansion. While she made her call, we arrived at my boutique. “Ariel here is my fashion designer. She is also a beauty expert. She’ll make you presentable for the wedding. Go with her.” I told my wife-to-be while she followed Ariel. “The Don won't be pleased with the suddenness of all this.” Said my bodyguard. “I know.” I replied solemnly. The only reason I had this much confidence was because I wasn't just Don's sottocapo, he was fond of me. That was why it came as a great shock to me when he laid down the rule of getting married before I can be eligible to become Don. An hour passed and my wife-to-be was finally released. She walked out and stole my breath away. Clad in a magnificent white wedding gown that outlined every detail of her curves. She was ready. I didn't allow my reaction to show on my face. I kept my stoic expression as I stood up. “Let's go.” I heard her scoff when I turned around. We entered the limousine again and drove to my family mansion. As expected, everyone was present. I could already see people from the entrance. As the second in command of this Mafia, I was stealing everyone's attention. Especially now when I had brought my fiancee. Simply public fulfilment, I held out my hand for her as she alighted the limo. We interlocked our arms as we advanced into the mansion to meet the Don. “What's your name?” I asked, only realizing at that moment that I didn't know her name. “Lexi. Lexi Gabe.” She answered. “Yours?” She asked back. I didn't answer her immediately. I was not quite used to people asking for my name. “Leonardo.” “Leonardo…who?” “Shhh…” I hushed her as we approached a particular oakwood door. It was opened by the security stationed there and we both walked in. There he was. Sitting behind his wide desk was Don, his back facing us. I let go of Lexi’s arm and stepped forward. “Don Morano. I'm here.” I announced boldly. “M…Morano?” Lexi stuttered. I bit the inside of my cheek and fisted my hands furiously at the blatant disrespect she just displayed.Lexi's POV.I stood frozen on the spot as I stared blankly at the only man sitting in the room. But he wasn't the cause of my dazed expression. It was the name Leonardo just mentioned.Morano.It immediately pulled my mind back to a certain rich pervert. The same man who wanted to buy me into marrying him. Dad called him Mister Morano. Are they…A lump rolled down my throat, swallowing the thought with it. It couldn't be, I can't be that unlucky that I would end up getting married to the family of the same man I ran away from.Leonardo turned to me with a glare. Apparently, I was not meant to say a word.I gave an apologetic face and stood upright. Although on the inside, I was praying this all go well.I would have to somehow ask Leonardo if he was related to Luca. Somehow. The man turned around on his chair. A sharp gasp escaped my lips as a shiver ran down my body.A long scar ran down from the man’s left eyebrow to his cheek, just above his lip. A true menacing sight for a man who
Lexi's POV.My jaw dropped as he glared at me. As I stared, wide eyed, back, there was no denying the raw hatred in his eyes.“This wedding is a fake!” Luca yelled out. “Father, this cannot be accepted…you!” He faced me once again, pointing his finger hard at me with disdain. Then he dashed forward towards me. My heart raced and I gasped while tripping backward. Before he could reach me, some men jumped out of nowhere to block his path, denying him access to me.A collective gasp resounded from the onlookers.“This is a plot against me! I won't accept this!” Luca continued to yell even whilst struggling with the men.My heart was still racing and my eyes darted around. What would I do if he spilled the beans? I was in the territory of deadly people.“May I ask what the meaning of this is, cousin? Or has your jealousy run so deep that it has driven you to sabotage my wedding?” A deep voice sounded right next to me.It was Leonardo. Luca is his cousin? Could there be any more surprises
Lexi's POV.My eyes parted slowly as I seeped back into consciousness. I turned on the soft bed and stretched like a cat. My legs vibrated -evidence of a good night's rest. I sat up while rubbing my eyes. For a split second, the plush room I was in seemed foreign to me. Until the events that led me there last night flooded my mind.I remember leaving the family mansion in Leonardo's limousine. We did not say much to each other throughout the ride to his mansion. Just that he warned me not to get close to Greta.I slid off the bed, almost tripping as I had forgotten that it was so higher above the ground than most beds I was used to.I made my way to the bathroom to freshen up.I needed to meet with Leonardo. I should have brought up the topic of our deal while we were heading home together but I figured that he would not want to talk about it with his driver around.I had begun my part by getting married to him and putting on a facade for our relationship. I needed to know when I wou
Lexi's POVAs I stared at him openly, he made no move to cover up. I continued to stare blankly at his magnificent form. He had a lean body but was packed with muscles at the right place. His Adonis belt was looking so hot, I could not believe what I was seeing. His sudden clearing of his throat made me shake my head vigorously. I looked up at him before turning around.“I'm sorry!” I squealed on the spot. I did not hear a response but I heard movement. Why was he even here? I thought the old man said he was not home yet?“Is this how you wander around in people's houses?” I heard his thick voice ask.I shook my head, “I…was…just um…I wanted to…” I paused and swallowed a small lump.“Can't find the words?” He asked.“I'm sorry. I just really needed to speak with you but the old man said you were not home so I decided to pass the time to…”“It's okay.” He cut through my ranting. I released a breath of relief.“You can turn around now.”Slowly, I opened my closed eyes and turned around.
Lexi's POV.“What?” I was certain of the shock written all over my face at that moment. Or was I dreaming? Was this not the same casino club that I worked at?He, my husband, was the owner?“I find that difficult to believe.” I folded my arms challengingly.I heard him chuckle, just slightly, barely audible. “Why is that?”“Because…” my voice trailed off. Then I shrugged. “I don't know.. because this casino is one of the most exclusive casinos in the country, literally the second!” I said. Saying it out loud made it even harder to believe him.Leonardo shrugged too. “It's mine.” He stated nonchalantly and somehow I believed him. But it was still a big surprise to me.The door was opened and Leonardo stepped out of the vehicle. I followed suit after my side of the door was opened as well.It sounded funny. Just yesterday, I had never entered a vehicle that was not a cab and now, I'm alighting a limousine.Classic.I followed Leonardo into the building I once worked at. I would not be
Lexi's POV.As the call ended, it felt as though my heartbeat stopped with it. My phone slipped from my hand and crashed onto the floor. I remained rooted on the spot, Luca's words echoing in my mind like a freaking haunting shadow. My mom. My dad. That bastard was going to kill them both if I didn't show up.I stumbled backwards, still reeling from shock, indecision and fear.I had to pay him his money as fast as possible, but I had nothing on me. I was yet to receive my payment from Leonardo. But I could not just leave my parents to die.As soon as I gained back an ounce of my sanity, I turned around and fled the club.Twenty minutes! That's all I had. I cannot be an orphan. Not by the hands of that lunatic of a man.My feet smacked on the floor in accordance with my heartbeat, carrying me as fast as they could. Thank God the pain I was feeling under was gone.I was panting, not from tiredness, but from the adrenaline coursing through my veins.“Ma'am, what's wrong?” A strange voice
Lexi's POV.My heart stopped for what felt like forever, my ears zoomed out all sounds, I could feel my palms become sweaty. As I watched my father bleed out on the cold ground of the hospital ward, my stomach lurched, I wanted to throw up. Everything around me felt too much, too heavy to contain, it felt like a heavy rock was being placed on my chest.Smoke left the nuzzle of Luca's gun. He turned to me and a smirk curled up his lips. As if it was all amusing to him, as if he enjoyed killing my father.I froze on the spot, unable to move a muscle or utter a word. All I could do was watch Luca and his men walk out of the ward while my father bleed out in the corner. There was this continuous buzzing sound in my ears, like a siren. It made me feel like my life was at a standstill, maybe it was. Because it sure as hell felt like it.My Dad was dead.My eyes grew wider as if the realization was just hitting me.He was dead. They killed him.“Lexi?” A familiar voice suddenly called and I
Leonardo's POV.I took her along so I could impress that shitbag Italian capo. Something I rarely indulged myself in. But I needed a swift deal and transaction of weapons from him and from my sources, he liked to be impressed.Instead I was embarrassed. While in the Exclusive lounge of the casino club, I boasted about my wife. How beautiful and smart she was. Only for us to end the meeting and not find her where I left her. That was the beginning of my rage.I found a silly excuse to delay Giovanni and his men while Grayson tried her number. But she didn't pick up. It was later discovered that she had left her phone in the club.Grayson also tried calling that bastard of a driver. He also wasn't picking up. I was pissed, beyond pissed. I was furious. Giovanni was beginning to throw small insults at me. I had to curb the urge to send a bullet in his fat skull. When all attempts to reach my so-called wife failed, I had to come up with a silly alibi for Giovanni. Again, something I didn'
Leonardo's POV.Hours passed by and I remained on the same spot, not moving a muscle. I watched as several ant colonies marched over my ankles. I knew Grayson would have gotten halfway to Brooklyn by the time I called him. But he was the one I could call. Now I was waiting in a lonely bush path, watching my car burn down to dust. There were upsides though. I watched the sun set from a forest view for the very first time in my life. And I saw how termites build their one foot tall mound. It was peaceful, the breeze blew gently against my skin, almost sending me into a deep sleep. But I knew that if I slept off in the middle of the forest, I would have probably been half eaten by the termites by the time I woke up.Instead, I kept my eyes open and my gun in my grip. For a while, a question occurred to me -what if the assassin came back? There was only one single and straight answer to that. I would be dead.Certainly, I would try and fight back and defend myself but I was already wea
Leonardo's POV.“Argh!” I groaned, feeling pain stabbing at my lower belly. But that was not what I was focused on.Some kind of bomb had been laced on the road, causing my car to crash. I could feel my blood running to my brain with the way I was sitting upside down, trapped in the car.I looked out the window, seeing nothing but shrubs and grasses. I had been thrown off the tarred road. The explosion must have hit hard. There was no time to analyse my situation. I stretched my arm as far as I could for the compartment but I just could not reach. I was stuck in my seat.“Argh!” I grunted, stretching harder.Something caught my attention from the reflection of my side mirror.I looked outside through the passenger ‘side window. There was a long shadow there and it was moving!“Shit!” I cussed as I struggled to reach for the compartment. I stretched as hard as I could, forcing my shoulder bones to snap.“Argh!” I groaned but ignored the pain and stretched more. Finally my hand touched
Leonardo's POV.My car screeched to a stop in front of the fortress. I parked next to Luca's Porsche and alighted the vehicle. The place was as silent as a graveyard. The reason being that the fortress was built deep with a catacomb of thick forest and rivers.Don Morano had built the road specially for us so that our cars would not suffer from portholes.I walked into the tall building. Unlike the previous time that I was here, the hall was empty. The goods that had been stored there had been delivered to their various selling points since last week.I went up the stairs and into the room where I was certain the others were.I was greeted with the high ranking members of our gang, sitting around a wide table. On the wall was a large painting of a cracked skull and two pistols crossing each other in front of the skull. Our insignia. Not many Mafia gangs could boast of one, but then we were the Moranos.“Took you long enough.” Marco remarked as I took a seat on the single empty chair n
Leonardo's POV.I pushed the gun against his jaw, pressing it hard against him.“Tell me where the boat is,” I demanded, my voice reeking of danger.Nelson groaned and whimpered, his lips quivering. He shook his head frantically, “I…I don't know what you're talking about…please, boss!” He cried.I sighed. Do I always have to go through this with everyone I need information from?“Perhaps, this would trigger your memory.” I backed up and shot his right foot. It was a silent gun so it was only his loud scream that echoed in the garage.“The last boat at the docks had been missing since two weeks ago when there was an attack, where is it?” I said, pressing the gun back to his jaw.I had discovered that one of the boats that delivered the cargos two weeks ago had been stolen after the attack. Grayson and I had pieced together that the attackers had most likely used the boat to ship the stolen cargo to another location. Now, the Morano family had a specific boat dealer, and that was Nelson
Lexi's POV.My mouth hung open, my eyes were as wide as saucers and I could feel blood leaving my face. What did I just hear? Was I hearing correctly? No, it could not be. I must have had a hearing disorder when I collapsed. No no no, this thing I was hearing from the doctor could not be true! It just couldn't.I glanced at the paper in my hand again, furrowing my brows as I went through it once more. I read it as though it was some kind of text written in a strange language. But it was English! It was written in fucking English that I was pregnant!“Wha…doctor…this is…impossible!” I stuttered, my lips quivering.I stretched the paper back to him, my hands trembling. Blood had drained from my being that the paper felt heavy in my hand.“This is impossible!” I repeated, like it was some kind of mantra.I could not accept it. In fact, it must not be possible.“But, Lexi…it's your test result…” the doctor said but I cut him off.“No it's not! It can't be mine. Doctor, this is not my test
Lexi's POV.Good thing Mason had left, it was as though I could finally breathe again.I was in my parents’ bedroom, sitting on the chair while Mum tucked Dad into bed. He had fallen asleep almost as soon as Mason left. That old man doesn't stress himself.Lucky for me, Mason did not tell them about our relationship. He had only told them that we attended the same college and might have known each other.Of course, I denied ever knowing him and I was glad he played along. As Mum finished tucking Dad in, she sat on the edge of the bed. She tapped the space next to her and I switched my sitting place.“It's good we now have a neighbor. Now we won't feel all alone.” Mum said as I sat.A frown creased my eyebrows, “Mum! You are not lonely!’ I retorted defensively.“But at least now we would have someone other than the nannies to always talk to.” She said. “Your father seems to like him.” She added.I remained silent but deep within me, I was seething with rage. I could not blame my parent
Lexi's POV.The surprise on my face switched to a hard glare. He had a smile on, which infuriated me. What the hell was he doing here? Did he not get the memo that I wanted nothing to do with him?“Lexi, who is it?” Mum asked from the dining room.“Umm…it's no one mum…” before I could complete my statement, he cut me off.“It's your new neighbor, ma'am. I come bearing gifts!” He shouted, making sure his voice was heard in the whole house.“What the hell do you think you're doing?” I asked in a whisper, gritting my teeth. He shrugged, “Bringing my new neighbors flowers.” He said innocently. But I knew he was only faking it.“Look, whatever game you're playing here, I’m not interested…” I was once again cut off, by my mother this time.“And who is this new neighbor of ours?” Mum asked as she stood next to me. I bit the inside of my cheek, hating myself at that moment.“Hi. I'm Mason, I live just across the street.” He said, smiling as though he was some kind of saint.I had to get him o
Lexi's POV.“Mason?” I exclaimed, my brows raised in shock. Even as he walked over to where I was, I found it hard to believe he was the one I was looking at.“Hey,” he said as he got nearer to me.“Wha…what are you doing here?” I would not expect him to be working as a gardener in the outskirts of the city.“I live here!” He exclaimed, his one cornered smile on.I glanced at the house where he was coming from before facing him again. I was sure my face held the most confused expression ever because I did not see him there the last time I came here to visit my parents.“I just moved in, actually.’ he clarified, as though he had read my mind.“Oh…” my voice trailed off. I did not know what else to say. Meeting him, again, was an unexpected occurrence.Besides, he was clad in a white singlet which accentuated his chest and muscles. It was quite distracting even though I hated to admit it.“So…what are you doing here?” He asked, finally breaking the silence.“I…” I cut myself off then fr
Lexi's POV.“Argh!” I groaned as my eyes splitted open. My head was throbbing hard and it took me a great amount of willpower to sit up on the bed. With my back rested against the headboard, I started to breath unsteadily. I controlled my breathing until the headache slowly subsided.Even with that, I was still feeling all woozy. The hunger I experienced the night before had worn me down.It dawned on me. Speaking of last night, how did I get here? I looked around and saw that I was indeed in my room.Deciding not to think much of it now, I struggled to my feet, fighting through the body ache and dizziness. I walked over to the bathroom in slow and weak steps.I went to the sink and rinsed my face with water from the tap. I sighed and looked at myself in the mirror; I still looked pale. I needed to find something to eat.I stepped back into the room but suddenly felt the urge to go back to bed. My knees were killing me and I was sure if I decided to go downstairs, I would most certain
