Jack
"Let's go. We're gonna be fucking late." Everett snaps at me as soon as I open the car door.
"You're the one who's late picking me up. I've been ready for fifteen fucking minutes." I shoot back, but he just huffs and starts to drive.
"I didn't realize she lived so far away." He says and I look at the GPS on his phone to see where we're headed.
"The suburbs. Of course." I murmur and Everett laughs.
"Where's your book?" He asks and I shrug.
"We're not reading the book there, we're just talking about it. Why would I bring it?" I ask and he does that thing where he silently prays for strength to deal with me.
He's so dramatic.
"What's in the back?" I ask, gesturing towards a box.
"The snack we were supposed to bring."
"I didn't know we had to bring a snack." I say and he rolls his eyes at me.
"That's because you never listen." He mumbles.
"Well, what is it?" I ask.
"Biscotti and coffee from the shop."
"What's biscotti?"
"It's like a cookie thing you dunk in your coffee." He says.
"Sounds gross."
"Then you bring the fucking snack next time." He shoots back at me.
"Why are you so pissy tonight? Is it because you're freaking out about your date with Harper tomorrow?" I ask with a teasing grin. He huffs at me before shooting me a glare.
"No. I'm pissy because you're irresponsible. And it's not really a date. She's just coming to the shop for coffee. Plus, her boyfriend just cheated on her. Why would she want anything to do with another guy right now?" He asks, a sharpness to his tone that he only gets when he's anxious. I just shrug and adjust the temperature in the car. Everett smacks my hand away and switches it back.
"You're not just some guy. You'll treat her right. Maybe that's what she needs." I respond. He goes quiet for a minute and I can tell he's thinking hard by the way his fingers tap rhythmically on the steering wheel.
"Maybe. I don't know. I don't even know what to talk to her about." He says.
"Ask the ladies at book club. Maybe they'll have some ideas." I suggest and his head swivels to look at me quickly.
"Don't you say a word to them. I'm serious." He snaps. I shrug and watch as he pulls into a nice two story colonial in the middle of the suburbs. I'm sure if I measured the grass it'd be exactly two inches.
"I won't. I'm just saying, if we're going to do this maybe we should take advantage of the opportunity. Pearl said these books are written by chicks and we'll be in a room full of them. Women who have way more experience in romance than either of us. Why not ask for some tips?" I say.
"I'm not going to use moves or some shit on Harper." He retorts.
"I'm not saying you should. You genuinely care about her, right?" I ask and he nods. "Well, maybe they know a way you can show her that without making a total idiot out of yourself."
I don't wait for him to respond, getting out of the car and walking towards the house. I knock and an older man answers it.
"We're not interested in buying any magazines." He says gruffly.
"We're here for book club." I explain and Everett holds up his copy of the book as proof. The guy eyes us skeptically before turning back towards the inside of the house.
"Jules! You got dudes in this group?" He yells. The next moment Julie rounds the corner, her head popping into the open doorway.
"Oh, hi boys! I'm so glad you found the place. Come on in." She says excitedly, ushering us into her home. Her husband watches us for a moment as she takes the food from Everett.
"You guys read these books?" He asks and I shrug.
"We heard it could help us out with the ladies." I say and he grunts at me before opening his mouth to clearly disagree with me.
"Maybe you should read a book or two." Julie says, giving her a husband a glare. He looks at her reproachfully before responding.
"What's that supposed to mean?" He asks.
"Remember that new thing we tried last week?" She asks.
"Yeah." He says.
"Read it in a book." She says with a weird tone that I can't discern. He looks at her thoughtfully before turning on his heel. "Where you going?" She calls after him.
"Your library." He calls back. Julie's face splits into a grin and she grabs my elbow, leading me into her living room where all of the other women have gathered.
"Food's there, dears. If you're hungry." She says, pointing towards a table with a mountain of food on it.
"Holy shit." I murmur, making a beeline for it. "This looks catered." I whisper to Everett, taking in the meat and cheese board, mini cucumber sandwiches, bite sized cupcakes and skewers with fresh fruit. I load up a plate and find a seat on the floor between Dawn and Gwen. I start stuffing my face as Julie gets everyone's attention.
"So, ladies. I mean... everyone." She says, giving Everett and I warm smiles. "What do we think of the book so far?" She asks.
"I feel like the tempo is good. I just hope Kaltor's mate isn't too predictable." Angie says.
"Yeah, like the vampire king's daughter." Gwen supplies.
I don't know what a mate is, so I just sit quietly and chew. But I'm guessing it's the chick that Kaltor's going to do the smut with.
"You don't think that would be interesting? Very Romeo and Juliet-ish?" Julie asks and Gwen shakes her head.
"It's too obvious. I'd be fine with it being a vampire on the other side though. Someone he has to save." She adds.
"What about you, boys? How are you liking it so far?" Julie asks and my mouth is full of food so I look over at Everett.
"I don't understand the conflict. Why are the werewolves and vampires at war?" He asks and Gwen giggles.
"Because werewolves and vampires hate each other." She says.
"Okay, but why?" Everett asks and Gwen shrugs.
"Because that's how the story's written." She says. Everett rolls his eyes and I'm surprised he doesn't start praying for strength to deal with her too.
Apparently that's just for me.
"Well, I think the conflict should be more obvious. Why would you go through with a whole ass war just because you don't like another species. I don't like spiders, you don't see me trying to kill off every spider in the world." Everett says and Julie nods.
"Good point. Although I think it's deeper than just a general dislike for a different species. I think more will be explained as we go further in the book." Julie says.
"How much longer till the smut?" Pearl cuts in. The rest of the ladies laugh before Julie answers.
"I'm not sure. I didn't check what chapter it's in." She says and Pearl huffs out an annoyed breath.
"I'm not getting any younger you know." She quips and I laugh so hard I choke on a grape.
They discuss the book awhile longer and as we sense things starting to wrap up I notice Everett's leg twitching like it does when he gets nervous. When Julie goes to announce the end of our meeting he finally speaks up.
"Can I ask for some advice?" He practically yells, his face turning red at his own outburst. The ladies look at him with shocked expressions before Dawn speaks up.
"Sure." She says.
"Um..." Everett starts, clearing his throat before he continues. "There's this girl. Her name is Harper. Anyway, I've liked her for a long time. But she came into the coffee shop a few days ago crying because her piece of shit boyfriend cheated on her. Anyway, I asked her to come to the shop tomorrow when I get off and she called it a date. I'm so fucking nervous." He says and the ladies give him warm smiles.
"I'm sure you'll do fine. You really like her, don't you?" Julie asks and Everett nods enthusiastically.
"Yeah. I do. I just want her to feel... important. I don't just want it to be us drinking coffee. I want to make it special somehow." He adds.
"Feed her. Women always love it when you feed us." Gwen says and Everett nods.
"Okay. Just make her food? I can do that." He says.
"And pull her chair out for her." Crystal adds.
"Maybe I should take notes." Everett murmurs, taking a notebook from his bag. I chuckle and watch as he writes down their suggestions.
"Oh. I need to come up with her joke." He says.
"What joke?" I ask.
"I told her a stupid joke and she said every time she comes in she wants another one." He says.
"Awww...." The women all coo and Everett's face blushes again.
"How about this? How did the moon cut his hair? Eclipse it." Gwen says, snorting at her own joke.
"Perfect." Everett says, writing it down.
"The best thing a young man can do for a woman he cares about is make her feel like she can rely on him." Pearl says. "Make sure she can trust you. That's the most important thing." She adds and Everett nods.
"How do I do that?" He asks.
"Just do what you say you're going to do. It's that easy." She says. Everett goes quiet as he contemplates and we all help Julie clean up.
Once we're back in the car, driving away he speaks up.
"That was a good idea." He says.
"Yeah? You feeling better?" I ask and he nods.
"Yeah. I told you this book club was a great idea." He says with a grin.
Everett"Hey, Mrs. B? Do you have a jar thing?" I shout across the shop as I watch my boss shuffle towards the brownies I made earlier. "A jar thing?" She asks, grabbing a couple and putting them on a napkin as she ambles towards me. "Yeah. The kind you put flowers in?" I explain and understanding flashes across her face before she nods. "You mean a vase." She says. "I'll go grab one. Wait, what do you need one for?" She asks and I show her the small bouquet I bought from the flower shop down the street. "For a girl." I say with a grin. Mrs. B. giggles before she heads back towards the book store. "I'll bring it right down." She says. I throw the white tablecloth over the table, adjusting it so it looks nice just as the oven goes off for the quiche I made. Working in a coffee shop, breakfast is really all I know how to make. "Here you go, sweetheart." Mrs. B. says, handing me a pretty glass vase. I put the flowers in and try to arrange them so they look nice. "Send it home with
JackI yawn as I stretch, picking up my tools and throwing them in my bag. I knew I should have gone to bed at a decent time last night, but that book was getting fucking good and I couldn't put it down. I only have a couple of chapters left to read before book club and I almost don't want to finish them, knowing I'll have to sit and wait to read more. I chug the rest of my energy drink, throwing it in the recycling container as I round the school heading towards the back entrance. When I get to the side of the building, I see a man trying to pull open a locked door. The hairs on the back of my neck go up, concern and suspicion rippling through me. "Can I help you with something?" I ask, stopping a few feet away from him and squaring my shoulders. His jerky, uncoordinated movements stop and his eyes flick to me before he turns towards me. He looks agitated, but so am I.I don't want him anywhere near these kids. "Yeah, I'm just lost. I'm supposed to be meeting my girlfriend for lun
JackBri and I walk quietly to the parking lot and I notice she stays close beside me, our shoulders brushing occasionally. I follow her towards her car and watch her as she stops next to it and turns to look at me. "Do you need to go home and get some things?" I ask her. She shakes her head and pops her trunk, pulling out an overnight bag."I started reading up on ways to deal with this kind of situation. One thing that women who went through what I am said over and over was to have a bug out bag." she explains. "That's good. You were smart about it." I say, patting her arm gently. She grins at me, making anxious little butterflies blast through my gut. How could this guy have fucked up so royally? If I had a girl like her I'd treat her like a queen."Do you want to follow me to my place?" I ask her. She bites her bottom lip and looks away."He knows what kind of car I drive." she says. I nod in understanding, grabbing her other bag and putting them both in my backseat before open
Everett"You ready to go?" I ask Jack as I pull up in front of his house. He climbs into my car with his book under one arm. A freaking miracle. "Yeah, let's go." he responds. "Where's Bri?" I ask, looking towards his house, but it's dark. He seems awfully protective of her, I'd be surprised if he left her alone like this. "She's at school. She started doing tutoring a couple of nights a week. She said she was scared to be home alone." he says, his jaw ticking. "You gonna explain that whole mess to me?" I ask. He just shrugs and fidgets with the vents like he does when he's thinking. "Her ex was a jerk. Threatened her. I couldn't just leave her, Ev. She's all alone." he mumbles. My heart aches at his morose tone and I think for a moment how I would feel if someone did the same to Harper. It makes me nauseous. "You're a good guy, Jack." I say back. He just shrugs. "According to you I'm a jerk." he says, grinning over at me. "Yeah. You're that too." I say, making him chuckle.
EverettHe wraps his hand around my throat, squeezing down until I feel my mind go hazy. "That's it. Take my cock like the good girl you are." he groans, thrusting up into me hard. He enters me fully in one, quick movement, making me cry out with shock and pleasure. "Louder, Helena. Scream louder for your mate." he demands, pushing up into me again. "Holy shit." I murmur, slamming my book shut quickly and taking a few deep breaths. I look around the room, even though I know I'm alone. For some reason part of me is nervous someone will catch me reading this. I get up and take a quick, cold shower to calm myself down before sitting down at my TV, flicking it on. I pull out my phone to call Jack. "Hello?" he answers. "Hey. How's it going?" I ask. "Fine." he responds. I can hear Basil's feet tapping on the floor in the background like they're playing tug of war. "Yeah? How are things with Bri?" I ask."Good. She's at tutoring right now. I mean, it's kind of weird living with a chick
JackI arrive at Everett's house actually early for book club to help him finish setting up. I don't knock as I enter and I hear him opening and closing kitchen cabinets. I carry the bags I brought through the house, putting them on the counter as he turns to look at me."Hey." I say, watching as he wipes down the sink. "Hey. What'd you bring?" he asks. I give him a smug smile before pulling my surprise out of the bag. I turn towards him, giving him a full frontal view. His mouth drops in shock as he looks at it horrified. He takes a step back, bumping into the counter."The fuck is that?" he asks. "A charcuterie board." I explain."It's shaped like a dick!" he shouts. I chuckle in response, cupping the solid block of wood around the balls and flipping it a little to show him a better angle. "Yeah. It's a cock-cuterie board." I say, laughing at my own joke. "Where'd you get that thing?" he asks. "Etsy." I respond, shrugging as I put it down on the counter. "The book club ladies
JackI set Bri's bag down just inside her door, watching as her eyes dart around the house nervously. My chest cracks open, pain dripping from me at how scared she looks. I reach out and grip her hand, squeezing it gently until her eyes meet mine. "Is it okay if I look around? Make sure everything's good?" I ask. I get the feeling she wants to ask me, but is too embarrassed. That's alright, though. I'll be here if she needs me. "Yes." she says, relief clear in her tone as she nods and steps to the side. "Thanks, sweetheart." I murmur, wandering around her space. I try not to be too intrusive, opening closets and checking around the basement before popping my head into her bedroom. I look back towards her where she's standing in the hallway, her arms wrapped nervously around herself. "Is it alright if I check in here?" I ask, not wanting to invade her privacy. She nods and follows me into the small room. It smells so much like her my body instantly relaxes. It's not too girly, bu
Everett"How'd it go?" I ask Jack as he slides into my car. He huffs out a breath and gives me a weird look as he shuts the door and clicks his seatbelt. "No hello? How are you?" he asks."Nope. How'd it go?" I ask. He chuckles and types something out on his phone before slipping it into his pocket. "Perfect." he says simply. I want to push him for more, but I'll leave it alone for now. "Where are we going?" he asks. "Gwen's." I respond."You think her place is as weird as she is?" he asks. I chuckle and shake my head. "She's not weird. She's... unique." I say. "Yeah. Whatever." he murmurs, turning to look in the backseat. "Hey! My cock board!" he says excitedly. "Dude, stop calling it that. It's weird." I say but he just grins at me. "It's a life size representation of my junk." he says and I bark out a laugh. "If your shit was that big you'd pass out every time you got hard." I point out. He chuckles and goes quiet, pulling out his phone and tapping on the screen again. "Bri
JackTwo Months Later..."We gotta hurry, baby girl. We're running late and Ev's gonna be pissed." I say, grabbing Bri's hand as we rush into the coffee shop. "And who's fault is that?" she asks, grinning up at me. "Yours." I say back. She snorts in disbelief, rolling her eyes. "How is it my fault?" she asks. "Because you have that perfect pussy I just couldn't wait until after book club to get a taste." I murmur in her ear, making her face blush. "Cutting it a little close, aren't you?" Ev asks, glowering at me. "Let's just go." I say, pushing him towards the book store entrance. He hands Bri and I our books. Harper already has hers. He leads the way to the back room with the bookcases where the ladies are already gathered. I sit on a chair and tuck Bri in my lap. Harper and Ev sit on the loveseat he and I shared the first night. I look around the room and smile when I see Annie and Gwen sitting next to each other, Annie's arm wrapped around Gwen's shoulder. "So nice of you
EverettOne Week Later..."Stop fidgeting." Harper whispers from next to me as we walk into the foreboding building. "I can't help it. This tie is so uncomfortable." I say back, adjusting the itchy fabric around my neck. Harper sighs from next to me, clearly at her wits end with my complaining. She pushes up on her tiptoes and leans in close to whisper in my ear. "If you're good and leave it alone, I'll let you tie me up with it later." I gasp and turn to look at her. "This is a funeral, Harper. Be respectful." I say sternly. "But like, for real?" I ask trying to gauge how serious she is. She snorts, trying to hold back a laugh, but I'm still staring at her waiting for an answer. "There's Bri and Jack." she says, walking ahead of me. "Hey, you didn't answer the question." I whisper yell as I follow her, trying not to watch her ass sway in the black dress she's wearing. Part of me thinks Pearl would be proud of me if I did though. "This shit is depressing as fuck." Jack says, ru
EverettIt had been three days since that shit show at Bri's house and I was finally able to sleep without seeing that fucking knife sticking out of her stomach every time I closed my eyes. I don't know how Harper was dealing so well with this, but she barely seemed fazed by the whole thing. I threw up on the way home from the hospital. Twice. That also was definitely not how I imagined meeting Harper's mom. I thought it would be at a nice dinner. I'd wear a fucking tie. Her hands wouldn't be covered in my friend's blood when I went to introduce myself. "What're you thinking about so hard over there, baby?" Harper asks from the other end of the couch. Her feet are laying in my lap, me rubbing them absentmindedly as I think. "I wish I hadn't met your mom like that." I admit. She sits up a little straighter to give me her full attention. "Like, you wish you hadn't met her at all?" she asks, hurt clearly evident in her tone. "No, sweets. I wish I had met her under better circumsta
JackI hear a new siren barreling down the street, high pitched and loud. There's something heart wrenching about knowing it's coming for someone you love. "Jack?" Bri asks weakly. "Yeah, sweetheart. I'm right here." I say, stroking my thumbs across her temples as I watch Harper's mom put pressure on where the knife is protruding from her stomach. Bri gasps and lets out a shriek of pain that makes me wish, not for the first time, that I was the one stabbed. "It hurts." she says, looking up at me with tears in her eyes. My vision blurs as my own eyes begin to fill, but I sniff them away and focus on her. I lean down and kiss her forehead, then both of her cheeks."I know, baby. We'll get you all fixed up soon." I murmur in her ear just as two paramedics come barreling into the house. "Back here!" Harper's mom calls. The two men hurry down the hallway and kneel on the ground by Bri's side and get to work. "Took you long enough. What, you on lunch?" Harper's mom snaps at them. They g
JackMy heart sinks at Everett's discovery, my heart pumping so hard I'm sure it'll tear right through my chest. I try to take deep breaths, to focus my mind before we get there. But it's hard to do that when all you can think about is ripping a man's head clean off his body. I take a corner a little too fast and see Ev reach up to hold onto the handle. "Sorry." I mutter, straightening out the car. "He's fine. Hit the gas. You're driving like a bitch." Harper snaps from the back. I'd laugh if the situation wasn't so dire. I hit one more corner and come to a screeching stop by the curb outside her house. I don't say anything as I throw the door open and barrel out towards the back door of Bri's house. I don't have a plan. Not really. Unless getting to Bri and murdering that piece of shit is a plan. Then I totally have one. Her back door is still open, the alarm I installed disabled. I walk into the house as quietly as I can, hoping to gain the advantage by surprising him. I don't
Jack"Follow me around here." "What the fuck, dude. Slow down." Ev snaps. "Come on they're closing in on us." I shoot back. "Cover my ass." "Fuck, he got me. Res me, bro." I scoff at him. "How am I supposed to do that when I'm fighting for my life. Fuck!" I scream just as blood is splattered across the TV screen. "One shotted! How the fuck did he one shot through a fucking wall!?" I exclaim while Ev tosses his controller to the side and stands up to let Basil in through the back door. "You're a terrible squad leader." he says, grabbing something to drink out of the fridge. He tosses me a can of pop before he sits back down. Basil jumps up on the couch and lays down in the spot between us, resting his head on my knee. I scratch behind his ear as I click through the game to reenter the que. "Thanks for letting us come over and hang out." I say, taking a drink before setting it down on the coffee table. "Coaster, asshole!" Ev snaps, lifting my can and placing it on a coaster for m
Everett"You about ready to head home, sweetheart?" Mrs. B asks as she shuffles towards me. I nod and pull my apron over my head. "Yeah. Stef just got here. She'll be out in a minute." I say of my replacement. She gives me a small smile and rounds the counter to snatch a cookie before wandering towards me. "And how are you, dear? I feel like I haven't seen you in ages." she says, patting my cheek affectionately. I smile at her and pour her a glass of milk to go with her cookie. "Good. Been busy, but the good kind of busy." I say. She hums in understanding, swallowing her cookie before responding. "And your girl?" she asks with a knowing gleam in her eye. I chuckle and feel my face heat in a blush. "She's good. Very good. Perfect, actually." I ramble making Mrs. B laugh."That's wonderful. You kids keep me young." she says. "And did you enjoy your book club?" she asks, barely able to keep the laughter out of her voice. I can't help it, I laugh so hard I double over, clutching my s
JackI carry Bri down the hallway towards her room, laying her gently in her bed. I see her hands start to shake and I lay down next to her, pulling her into my chest. "You alright, sweetheart? We don't have to do anything you don't want to." I say gently, looking in her eyes. She gives me a sweet smile and kisses me softly before pulling away to look at me. "I want to, Jack. I'm just a little nervous." she says and I chuckle a little. "Me too, angel." I admit and watch as her expression softens while she looks at me. "Kiss me." she pleads quietly. I lean down to capture her lips with mine, moving against her and lifting my hand to run it gently through her hair. I take my time kissing her, doing my best to pour as much love and affection into it as I can. Slowly, I start to feel her body relax under me, her hands wandering my body as little moans slip from her throat. I'm painfully hard, but I still go slow as I let my hand wander down her body and up her shirt, gliding my finge
JackWe push into Dawn's house and it looks like we're the last ones to arrive. I put my pot of meatballs on the counter and load up a plate, lamenting that this will be the last time I get to snack on all of this amazing food. "We're gonna do more book clubs, right?" I whisper to Ev as I eye the food sadly. I hear him chuckle and look over to see him nod. "Yeah. If only for the food." he says, putting his loaf of banana bread down with some butter. I take a slice and slather it before taking a bite, groaning at how amazing it tastes. "Holy shit. This is so good." I mumble through my full mouth and Ev beams with pride. "Thanks. I made the butter myself.""Really?" I ask surprised. "Yep." he says, piling food on his own plate. "You're such a bougie bitch. I fucking love it." I say, heading towards the living room and sitting on the floor next to Pearl. She pats my head and gives me a warm smile before snatching a piece of cheese off my plate. "Well, everyone." Dawn starts. "It's
