Xander was amused by her cute and candid response.

"You don't have to get me a gift in return. Maybe you could get me something with my card?" he said.

Abigail replied miserably, "But I don't want to keep spending your money. I can earn money myself. Before I met you, I actually did pretty well on my own."

Xander had always known that Abigail could do well even if he were not around.

He thought to himself, 'The fact that she could pass multiple rounds of selections among the thousands of competitors and end up as my assistant has already proved her abilities. She can afford to buy her own house, has good looks, and has many men pursuing her. I'm dispensable to her.

'Regardless, knowing all this is one thing, but hearing Abigail saying them aloud is another.'

He subconsciously tightened his grip on her hand.

"But I need you to spend my money. I need to know that I'm needed and not dispensable to you..." said Xander.
