[Abigail appears so innocent, but beneath the surface, her life is a chaotic mess.]

[No one knows how many men she has been sleeping with, and some think she has manipulated her way into a position at headquarters.]

[As the executive assistant, she is the face of the company, and someone like her shouldn't be allowed to stay.]

What happened right now eerily mirrored one from years ago. Back then, some people wanted to destroy an ambitious and attractive young woman by spreading rumors about her wild personal life and subjecting her to public humiliation. As the accusations piled up, everyone turned against her.

A wave of déjà vu washed over Abigail as she recalled that group of people cornering her at home. They had pulled her hair and struck her while hurling vicious insults.

"You look just like a seductive vixen with that face of yours, doing such shameless things at such a young age." "Get out of here, and never come back."

She had tried to explain, but no one would listen. They only believed what they wanted to believe. On that day, her grandmother was away, and the only person she could turn to was her uncle. But instead of helping her, he had slapped her hard across the face. "Our family has no place for someone as disgraceful as you. If your father knew what you've done, he'd jump out of his coffin to put you in your place!"

"Abigail, is any of this true?"

Keith's voice pulled Abigail from her painful memories. He had only worked with her for a little over a month and did not know her well. But unlike the others who had already judged her based on the rumors, Keith remained neutral and asked for her side of the story. For that, Abigail was deeply grateful.

With a strained smile, she asked, "Has Mr. Zane arrived yet?"

Keith replied, "He just got here."

Abigail's hands trembled from the cold as she clutched her laptop tightly, steeling herself before entering Xander's office. Xander stood at the floor-to-ceiling window, puffing away at his cigarette, his back to the door. Abigail could not see his face, just the towering, enigmatic figure that he cut. Taking a deep breath, she gently placed her laptop on his desk. "Mr. Zane, someone at the company is spreading vile rumors about my personal life. I need just two minutes of your time to clear the air."

Without so much as turning around, Xander's voice sliced through the room, cold and indifferent. "Your personal life holds no interest for me. However, should anything about you risk tarnishing Zane Corporation's image, I regret to say that we cannot keep you on board."

A wave of icy dread washed over Abigail, chilling her to her core. "Mr. Zane, please, just let me explain before—"

He cut her off ruthlessly. "If you insist these are baseless rumors, then produce evidence to prove it. You have two hours to rectify this situation, or how can I possibly trust your abilities?"

His words struck a chord within her. "Thank you, Mr. Zane," she replied, her voice tinged with determination.

'Mr. Zane is right; if I couldn't handle my own personal turmoil, how can I be trusted with the pivotal role of the executive assistant? I've come to him prepared to take control, to strike first and gain the upper hand, ensuring he wouldn't fall prey to the venomous lies circulating online. I couldn't afford to lose my job, nor could I bear the weight of another blemish on my reputation. Back when I was younger, I had been powerless against the relentless slander and insults from others. Now, I refuse to be the same Abigail who let everyone walk all over me!'

The moment she left the CEO's office, Abigail dashed to the company's IT security department, urging them to rapidly unmask the anonymous poster. Since her promotion to the executive assistant, the IT security staff had always been courteous to her. Today, however, they hesitated and made excuses for not assisting her. Luckily, Keith intervened with a phone call, demanding their cooperation. Mere minutes after Keith's call, the IT security team managed to pinpoint the anonymous culprit.

The person responsible for the post was not David, as Abigail had suspected, but she was certain he was involved. Armed with this information, she promptly contacted the police. The authorities sprang into action, and within half an hour, they tracked down the poster's residence. The individual confessed that David was the mastermind, and the police subsequently discovered numerous invasive photos of Abigail on David's computer—catching him red-handed.

As the police arrived at the company to arrest David, Abigail checked her watch—exactly two hours had passed. Breathing a sigh of relief, she strode toward David with fierce determination in her high heels, and, in front of the officers, delivered two powerful slaps across his face.

After hitting David, Abigail massaged her aching hand and addressed the astonished onlookers with a wry smile. "Is there no other way you men can pick on a woman besides spreading scandalous rumors and shaming her?"

"This isn't over, Abigail." David snarled through gritted teeth. But with no strength left to resist, he was promptly escorted away by the police.

In front of everyone, Abigail called the HR manager. "Notify everyone in the company—if anyone ever tries to slander a colleague again, Zane Corporation will never employ them." Without waiting for a response, she hung up the phone.

She surveyed the faces of the twenty or so people in the room. "You've all witnessed what happened today. I had David, the despicable rumor-monger, expelled from Zane Corporation, and I can do the same to anyone else who dares to cause trouble. That's because I have Mr. Zane standing behind me."

"Mr. Zane!"

The crowd turned to look behind her, echoing "Mr. Zane" in unison.

Abigail glanced back and saw Xander standing right there, reinforcing her point that he was standing behind her. She tensed up momentarily before trying to appear nonchalant. "Mr. Zane!"

Xander's piercing gaze swept over her from beneath his silver-rimmed glasses without a word, and he walked away.

Following him, Keith said firmly, "Abigail, keep up."

Abigail quickly caught up as Keith suggested, "It's lunchtime; let's head to the cafeteria."

Xander was notoriously picky about his food. He had a personal chef who prepared all his meals using ingredients exclusively from the Zane family's own farm. It was a rare sight to see him eat anything from outside. In the month Abigail had been by his side, this was the first time she had witnessed him stepping foot in the company cafeteria.

It was not the peak lunch hour yet, so the cafeteria was devoid of other employees. Abigail longed for a table by the window, but Xander, assertive as always, chose the most conspicuous spot in the middle. She reluctantly abandoned her preference as she joined him.

Although it was just the company cafeteria, it boasted a higher standard than many high-end restaurants. The vast array of both local and international dishes was almost overwhelming. As Abigail struggled to decide what to eat, her heart fluttered when Xander's personal chef arrived with a team, presenting a table overflowing with sumptuous dishes.

Keith's eyes widened, his mouth watering at the sight. "We're in for a real treat today."

Feeling a bit disoriented and overwhelmed, Abigail excused herself. "I'll go wash my face." She rushed to the restroom, splashed cold water on her flushed face, and practiced smiling in the mirror. It was not until she had achieved the perfect smile that she allowed herself to feel satisfied.

As she left the restroom, she ran into Keith. "Mr. Jackman, thank you."

"For what?" Keith asked, puzzled by her gratitude.

"If it weren't for your phone call, the IT security department might not have listened to me," Abigail replied. She was still in her probationary period as the executive assistant and was at the center of a scandal. Many people believed that given Xander's zero-tolerance policy for slip-ups, he would dismiss her, so they no longer treated her with the respect her position deserved.

"It was Mr. Zane who asked me to make that call. You should thank him," Keith admitted, feeling a twinge of guilt. At the time, he had believed the rumor and had not considered helping Abigail.

Keith's words sent shockwaves through Abigail's heart. She had assumed that Xander, like everyone else, doubted her personal life's integrity. His apparent heartlessness when she confronted him seemed to confirm her fears. Little did she know that Xander had believed in her innocence all along and had given her the opportunity to gather evidence to dispel the rumor. When the scandal had broken years earlier, only her grandmother, Felix, and Melody had trusted her unconditionally. Despite her being his subordinate for just over a month, Xander, the powerful mogul of a massive conglomerate, believed in her as fiercely as her own family. For this, she vowed to be Xander's most loyal and dependable aide, even if it meant forsaking a high salary. As they returned to the dining table, Xander sipped his soup gracefully, making Abigail admire him even more. When it came to poise, no one could hold a candle to her boss, Mr. Zane. Even the simple act of sipping soup was as elegant and captivati

Abigail screamed in her heart. 'I'm so dead!'She would normally not bring her phone along, and this was the only time she pocketed it since it was almost time to get off work, yet she was already caught. Not wanting to create a scene, she secretly muted her phone, only to notice it was a call from her long-lost husband when she accidentally peeked at the phone screen.Abigail dared not peek further as she put her phone away and silently stood at the side.Luckily Xander did not put her on the spot as he said, "All of you may leave now."Abigail and Keith muttered a "Yes" and quickly scuttled off from the director's office.Due to the delay at Xander's office, she did not bother about checking her phone before speeding toward the airport. Felix and Melody had already helped check-in the baggage before she arrived. Once Abigail arrived, the trio rushed through the safety checkpoint. There were only a few minutes left before the boarding gate closed when they finally got through it.

The second message was more recent: [Where are you? Why aren't you replying?]Felix and Melody were beside Abigail. They saw the request for divorce from the sender, and immediately hugged her. "Caterpie..."They wanted to comfort her but did not know what to say. Her husband had disappeared without a trace, only to find her one year later to discuss divorce, and it was during the same time she was slandered. It was doubtfully just a coincidence that these two situations are not interrelated. It was still clear in their minds when that lowlife said he would protect and cherish her forever the year Abigail was met with an accident, yet was cold and decisive when he wanted to break up with her. That incident created a huge fiasco throughout North Florivera. Abigail had wanted to use the law to protect herself, but the other party was well-connected. Someone had even brought up the issue in her school which almost got her kicked out.In order to continue her studies, she had no choice

As both sides were satisfied with the negotiated price, the other minute details were effortlessly gone through and they soon signed the agreement. Once the deposit has been transferred, mortgaging a house will no longer pose a problem to them. As there was still some time left after the meeting, the trio fully enjoyed themselves by sightseeing around Hayshiport for the whole day before touching down at Florivera on Sunday at 10:00 p.m. Nevertheless, Melody and Felix were unable to sense if Abigail was truly alright as she had learned to hide her emotions well since then.Abigail playfully punched the both of them and said, "What are the both of you worrying about? I'm fine. Once the royalty is transferred over, we can look for a house that we can stay together in."Following the same train of thought, Felix and Melody replied, "That's right. Let's work hard to earn money for the house so we can truly call ourselves Floriverans."Abigail yawned and wanted to sleep. "It's late and I'

Abigail was vexed after hearing Xander's question and immediately became alert before she replied, "Don't worry, Mr. Zane. This will definitely not affect my job performance."Xander paid no more heed as he boarded the commercial car that came to pick them up. There were five people in the car when they boarded it; the three of them along with the driver and Cleona who came to fetch them. Cleona sat beside Xander along the journey to brief him about the progress of the development as Abigail and Keith got out their notebooks to take down the details of the briefing. The trip took more than an hour and Cleona spoke the whole journey while Abigail and Keith noted down the details during the same time. It was already nightfall when they reached the development project. The company had provided dinner, but Abigail checked in earlier due to her losing her appetite from feeling uncomfortable. Zane Corporation's hotel had fully furnished facilities and the rooms even had their own oxygen sup

Cleona thought for a moment before she answered. "There's nothing wrong."Abigail responded, "Then why are you telling me these things if there's nothing wrong?"Cleona was unable to respond as she never thought Abigail to be so straightforward."I'm going to rest now," said Abigail as she pulled open the door, wanting Cleona to leave the room. Cleona came out from Abigail's room, took out her phone, and dialed a number. "Madam, Mr. Zane's new assistant may be beautiful, but he has seen more than enough beautiful assistants. As a person of the same gender, I can see that she has no ulterior motive toward Mr. Zane. Even if she does, he would've fired her without you lifting a finger."Cleona only nodded her head after the person on the other end of the line spoke, and replied before hanging up, "Yes, I'll continue to observe her these few days.""Ahem."A half-laugh could be heard suddenly on the balcony from behind her as she kept her phone and was prepared to leave. She turned h

Abigail approached Xander and greeted him with the utmost respect, "Good morning, Mr. Zane."Xander ate his breakfast with a refined grace, his icy gaze never leaving his plate.Abigail was no stranger to his cold demeanor, and she refused to let it affect her. She stood a few feet away and said, "Mr. Zane, I need to clarify something with you."At last, Xander finished his meal and graced her with a look. "What is it?"Abigail stood rigid, her hands at her sides. "Mr. Zane, my feelings for you are solely those of a subordinate to a superior. I swear I have no other intentions toward you."He was not a fool; he could see right through her intentions. A wicked grin tugged at the corner of his mouth, as he taunted her, "Do you honestly think I would have any interest in a married woman like you?"Abigail did not dare to think like that. "Mr. Zane, please don't mock me. I know my place. I'm saying this so that people around you won't misunderstand my intentions, making it unbearable

The man chuckled. "Not only is Mr. Zane young and successful, but he also possesses a compassionate heart." He suddenly changed the subject. "The villagers here have relied on farming and herding for generations; they have no experience in managing guesthouses." The villagers were simple folk, many of whom could not even speak Chrysalan. The idea of running a restaurant or guesthouse was far from easy for them.Xander, with his many years in the business world, knew exactly what the other party was thinking. "Zane Corporation has already arranged a professional team to teach them step by step, ensuring everyone here can live happily and prosperously."The VIP laughed again, this time with genuine delight. After lunch and bidding the VIP farewell, Abigail and Keith continued to accompany Xander as they surveyed the surrounding areas of the scenic spot. There was only one asphalt road connecting the airport to the scenic area, surrounded by rugged mountain paths and dilapidated houses

Ron looked at her dawdling pace with disdain. "If you, a lady, can handle it, why can't I, a grown man, stay?"His words sounded noble, but Ron regretted them the moment they arrived at the hotel.Despite now earning a decent income, Emma was still reluctant to spend money. This place was hardly a hotel; it was clearly a budget inn charging only a few dozen bucks a night. The hygiene was questionable at best, and safety seemed like a gamble.Ron turned on his heel, dragging her suitcase behind him. "We're leaving, now.""It's too late, and we can't get a refund for the room.""Are you trying to get us killed?"Emma fell silent, her thoughts a whirlwind of frustration. "Mom, I've got something on tonight. After dinner, I'll drive Emma back to her dorm."Rebekah raised an eyebrow. "What's so important?" she wondered aloud, thinking, 'Wasn't he the one insisting Emma stay over? What's he up to now?'Ron kept it mysterious. "Life stuff."Rebekah could not help but chide him lightly, "You, always the joker."Right after dinner, Ron insisted on leaving to take Emma back to her dormitory. Don't let his kindness fool you into being the other woman."Emma's gaze on Ron was fiery, seething with anger. "Do you even hear yourself? Is that what you think of me? For the last time: Tucker and I share nothing more than a mentor-mentee relationship. There's nothing else between us.""I'm just looking out for you, worried you might get deceived," Ron said, witnessing Emma's fury for the first time. Yet, he could not help but find her anger not at all intimidating, but rather endearingly foolish.R
