Abigail

I stayed where I was, my head still resting against Alexander’s shoulder, my body refusing to pull away from the comfort he offered. It wasn’t much, but right now, it was enough.

After what felt like forever, I finally spoke. “When you dropped me off earlier,” I said, “Marceline was waiting for me inside my home.”

I felt his body tense slightly beside me. I wanted to glance up at him, to see if he was surprised by the news or if he had already expected it. But I didn’t move. I was too tired for that.

A beat passed before Alexander spoke. “What did she say to you?” His tone was unreadable, but there was a sharpness under his usual calm.

“She told me about her ties to Bonafide.” This time, Alexander didn’t shift beside me. “She’s the daughter of one of the most renowned criminals in the country,” I continued. “It’s still crazy to think about.”

Alexander was quiet for a moment before saying, “I knew she had some connection to Bonafide.”

I lifted my head slightly. “You did?”

RoxyI sat at my desk, fingers hovering over the keyboard, the blinking cursor on my screen taunting me. No matter how hard I tried to focus, my mind refused to cooperate. The performance evaluation was already more than twenty-four hours overdue, and Mr. Hardin was going to lose his mind when I handed it in late. Normally, I wouldn’t be this careless. Normally, I would have had it finished days ago.But nothing about today, or yesterday, was normal. My lateness now was all because of that damn letter.I clenched my jaw, trying to will myself to concentrate but the numbers in front of me blurred once again as my brain replayed that damn letter over and over again."You're playing a dangerous game, Roxanna. You're involved in something you shouldn't be. The consequences of your actions are coming. This is much larger than you realize.Did you enjoy your walk this morning? We know we did."A shiver crept down my spine just thinking about it. The envelope had been waiting for me outside

Roxy The call ended, leaving me gripping my phone so tightly my knuckles turned white. "Roxanna?" Mr. Hayes’s voice snapped me back to reality. I turned to look at him, realizing I’d been staring blankly at the wall. "My apartment was broken into," I said, my voice small. He frowned, leaning forward. "What?" I nodded, still processing the words myself. "The police are there now. I have to go." Just as I had expected, Mr. Hayes didn’t scold me. He just studied me for a long moment before sighing. "Go. And let me know if you need anything." I barely heard him as I rushed out of the office, my thoughts racing. First, the letter, now, a break-in. This wasn’t random. Someone was definitely trying to send me a message. I gripped the steering wheel hard as I drove home, my mind cycling through possibilities like a broken record. Who could have done this? It was definitely someone connected to that ominous letter? I barely registered the stoplights, weaving through traffi

Abigail I stared down at the notes scattered across my desk, my fingers tightening around the pen as I traced over the names and connections I had written down. The ink was smudged in places from how often I had returned to these pages, rewriting, reanalyzing, trying to piece everything together. But no matter how much time I spent staring at these names, the picture in front of me still wasn’t complete. There were too many missing pieces. Too many questions. But one thing was certain. Though both Marceline and Susanna had acted against me, they had done so for entirely different reasons. Marceline had been behind none of Susanna’s antics. I circled Susanna’s name again, pressing the pen so hard against the page that I nearly tore through it. She was reckless, impulsive and too eager to take what she wanted without considering the consequences. Marceline, on the other hand, was calculated and always ten steps ahead. And yet, for all her control, even she had been caught off g

Alexander I ran the towel over my face, wiping away the last traces of water as I stepped out of the ensuite bathroom connected to my office. The air-conditioned room was cooler than the bathroom’s steam-filled warmth, and I let out a slow breath, rolling my shoulders as I adjusted the towel wrapped around my waist.Daniel had brought me a fresh change of clothes from home earlier, and I rifled through the bag, searching for something comfortable. This was my fourth night sleeping at the office, and I saw no reason to return home just yet.Susanna was out of the hospital now, but I found that I couldn’t stomach the idea of being in the same house with her.It was a strange realization, considering I had always thought myself thick-skinned. I had endured a lot in life, tolerated people I had no patience for, sat through pointless conversations with those I detested, and yet, this was different. Because the more I learned about Susanna and her family, the more repulsed I became. And th

AbigailI leaned against my headboard as I answered Roxy's call, a small smile still on my face."Roxy!" I greeted, cheer in my voice. "It's been too long! How have you been?""I'm great!" she responded cheerfully, but something in the way she said the words made me pause. I sat up straighter, a faint unease settling in my chest.“Roxy,” I said, my tone turning serious, “are you okay? Please don’t lie to me.”There was a brief silence on the other end of the line. Then, finally, she sighed. “I’m fine, but… there’s something I have to tell you.”I gripped my phone tighter. “What is it?”She hesitated for only a moment before saying, “My home was broken into.”A small gasp tore from my lips, my hand flying to my mouth. "What?!" I nearly shouted. "A-are you alright?""I'm fine," she assured me quickly. "I'm just coming back from the police station. I went to give my statement."I sat up straight, my worry skyrocketing. Roxy lived in a quiet, safe neighborhood, the kind of place where bre

Roxy I was reviewing a report at my desk, making notes in the margins, when someone cleared their throat beside me. Looking up, I saw Susan, my co-worker, standing there, sucking on a lollipop as she glanced at my work. “Mr. Hayes wants to see you,” she said. I blinked. “Did he say why?” She shook her head. “Just told me to send you over.” I sighed, capping my pen and setting the report aside. “Alright, thanks.” Susan nodded and walked away, and I took a moment to collect myself. This wasn’t a surprise. I’d known it was coming. Still, anticipation curled in my stomach as I pushed back my chair and stood, smoothing my hands over my skirt before heading toward Mr. Hayes’ office. The door was already open when I arrived. I knocked lightly on the frame, peeking inside. “Mr. Hayes? I heard you wanted to see me?” He looked up from his desk and gave me a curt nod, gesturing for me to step in. I did, shutting the door behind me. Without preamble, he picked up a document from his des

The fluorescent light above me flickered annoyingly. I blinked against the harsh light, my eyes adjusting as I looked across the table at the policeman sitting in front of me. He watched me with barely concealed bewilderment, like he couldn’t quite believe this was what he had to deal with on a slow morning. To my left, Daniel, the real Daniel, sat stiffly in a chair with his arms crossed, a bead of sweat trailing down his jaw. To my right, Roxy was picking invisible specks of dust off her sleeve, looking entirely too relaxed for someone who had been attacked just hours ago. Then, our eyes met, and that was it. Roxy burst into laughter, full-bodied and uncontrollable, the kind that had no trace of joy but was instead laced with overwhelming relief. It wasn’t pretty or graceful; it was raw and almost manic, the kind of laughter that bubbled up after narrowly escaping disaster. I felt my own lips twitch in response, not because I found anything funny, but because I couldn’t believe the

Abigail Daniel, to his credit, didn’t so much as crack a smile, but I could see his jaw tightening like he was fighting the urge. He kept his grip firm on the man’s collar, shaking him slightly. “Not so cocky now, are you?” The man let out a strangled noise, his face turning red; not from anger, but from the sheer agony of whatever pain the umbrella had caused. My laughter faded as I stepped closer to the man, gripping my umbrella tightly. I didn’t hesitate this time. I struck him again, not with any real strategy, just enough to remind him who was in control here. He let out a sharp hiss of pain, his face twisting, but this time, he didn’t laugh.“Who sent you?” I demanded, my voice firm, unyielding. The arrogance was gone from his eyes now, replaced with something far more satisfying; uncertainty. He gritted his teeth, his breath coming in pained, uneven bursts. Daniel and the men he had brought still held him tight, and I saw the exact moment hesitation flickered in his expressio

AbigailI spooned the soup into my mouth like it was my punishment. Warm, bland, and textureless. I could tell it was good, probably some expensive place Daniel had ordered from, but to me, it might as well have been ash. I chewed mechanically, my eyes glued to the TV where an explosion lit up the screen in vibrant orange and yellow. The sound was muted. I wasn’t really watching. Just staring. The kind of stare where your eyes are open but your mind has long since wandered off into the darkness.I just needed to eat enough to keep my strength up. That was the logic. Strength for what, I wasn’t entirely sure. Everything, I suppose. For waking up tomorrow. For standing without swaying. For fighting. The truth was, my body felt numb and foreign to me. My limbs moved out of habit, not will. My chest felt hea

AlexanderI sighed and set the report down beside me on the bed, the paper softly brushing against the cotton sheets. My fingers went up to the bridge of my nose, rubbing slowly, hoping the dull ache building behind my eyes would ease with a little pressure. It didn’t. I leaned back against the headboard, letting my head rest there for a moment, trying to push back the weight of what I’d just read in Daniel’s report.I’d skimmed it yesterday, noted the key points, but tonight I’d finally read it through properly, line by line. And with each sentence, it had become more and more obvious that Liliana was tangled in something deeper than she had any right to be. She had ties I couldn’t yet understand how she had made, ties that enabled her to position herself at the heart of things. I picked up the report again and flipped to the section Daniel had titled Property Chain Discrepancies. According to his investigation, during the

ConradThe water was cold. Not lukewarm, not cool but cold. It hit my skin like a punishment, like maybe if I stood under it long enough, it would drown the rage boiling in my blood. But it didn’t.Hours had passed since I left Ravenbrook, and still, my jaw was clenched and my shoulders were tight. I stood there, letting the freezing water run down my body, but none of it soothed me. If anything, the silence only made it worse. My thoughts kept circling like vultures, refusing to leave the taste of what I had experienced behind. The humiliation, the shock, the audacity of it all.I couldn’t get rid of Abigail’s expression in my thoughts. She’d looked at me like I was nothing. Like I didn’t matter at all. And that bastard beside her, Daniel, or whoever the hell he thought he was, hadn’t even flinched when I threatened him. He had just stood there, smug behind his glasses, acting like I was some nuisance in my own estat

ConradThere was something off about him.I stared at Alexander’s secretary, Daniel, my eyes narrowing as I tried to place what it was. Maybe it was the posture. It was too confident even though he was just standing there. Secretaries didn’t stand like that, not in the presence of someone like me. Or maybe it was the steady way he looked at me, holding my gaze like he was reading me, daring me to blink first.A smirk nearly twitched across my lips. He was bolder than most.Still, it didn’t matter. Whatever game he was playing, I would end it the way I ended every threat; cleanly, decisively, and with little patience for dramatics. If he thought I was bluffing by telling him he wouldn’t make it back to Alexander in one piece, he was in for the rudest kind of awakening. I had disposed of men for less than standing on my property with that look in their eyes. And the fact that this was the same idiot who kept turning up around Abigail

Abigail“Just wait a little bit,”Alexander continued, his eyes trained on my face. “One of my men will drive you to the hospital for a check up. I’ll join you as soon as I finish up here.” He took one of my shaking hands in his and gave it a gentle squeeze before letting go.The heater’s warmth crawled up my limbs slowly, but it couldn’t seem to reach my chest. I sat quietly in the passenger seat, wrapped tightly in the towel he had draped over me, watching him walk away toward the manor. My fingers, still trembling slightly, clutched the towel closer. The moment he shut the car door, I already missed his presence. It had felt like something I could hold onto, like safety. But then the silence was broken by the low rumble of engines growing louder by the second. I turned just in time to see two sleek black cars screech into the front courtyard, tires groaning in protest. This was the kind of loud entrance only someone li

  • Abandoned by Ex, Married to His CEO Brother   Chapter 117

AbigailThe first thing I felt as I came to was cold. Not just the kind that prickled the skin or made you shiver, but the kind that sank deep into the marrow, slow and consuming. It felt like the chill in the air had seeped into my bones and decided to settle there, like a second skeleton made of frost. I wanted to curl in on myself, but even that movement felt too much. My body was strangely weak.Against the freezing cold, a searing heat pressed against my lips, like fire on ice...someone’s lips? I stirred weakly, and in the hazy waking that followed, I became aware of warm droplets falling onto my cheek. Tears, but they weren’t mine.I opened my eyes.Alexander’s face swam into view above me. His brows were drawn together in anguish, but his eyes lit up with such sudden relief when he saw I was awake, it made my heart twist. There were tears in his eyes, actual tears, and I don’t think he even noticed them until I reached up with trembling fingers and brushed one away.“You’re cry

Conrad This was wrong. All wrong. I took a slow sip of my whiskey, trying to let the burn of it distract me, but it didn’t work. The woman in front of me, the one I had spent a ridiculous amount of money perfecting, stood stiffly, her hands clasped together, head tilted downward like a scolded child. She was supposed to look like my wife. She did, to an extent. The hair, the eyes, even the perfume; those details were correct. But everything else? Off. Her posture was wrong. Abigail didn't carry herself like an 1900's schoolgirl expecting a caning. Abigail never failed to meet my eyes even when I was spitting fire. Her quiet confidence couldn't be taught. This woman? She was trying too hard, and it irritated me. I sighed, rolling the glass between my fingers before setting it down with a dull clink. This would have to do for now. I couldn’t have Abigail yet, but I needed something, someone, to fill the void, and it couldn't be Susanna. At least, not for now. Mother had been s

Alexander The moment I pulled open the door hidden under the base of the statue of the Virgin Mary, the scent of decay hit me like a punch to the gut.No, that wasn’t quite right. I had smelled it the moment I stepped into the manor of the estate. That deep, cloying stench of something long past its time, something that should have been laid to rest but had been left to fester instead. But I had ignored it. Or rather, I had hoped, prayed even, that it was nothing more than the rot of an abandoned estate.I never thought we would find a body. But there she was.I barely had time to register the sight of the corpse before I heard Abigail’s sharp gasp behind me. I moved without thinking, shoving the door closed and stepping in front of it, using my body as a shield as if I could somehow erase what she had just seen. But it was too late. She had seen, and she knew. I didn’t need to hear her say it to understand. I had already reached the same conclusion—the same horrible, gut-wrenching

  • Abandoned by Ex, Married to His CEO Brother   Chapter 114

Abigail The man who had leaned against the statue stumbled back, waving away dust with one hand as he coughed. A thick cloud filled the air, and I instinctively raised my arm to cover my nose and mouth. The statue of the Virgin Mary had crumbled like a sandcastle, revealing something hidden under it. As the dust settled, Alexander stepped closer, his expression sharpening with concern and curiosity. Where the statue once stood, there was now a gaping hole, the jagged edges of stone framing what looked like a concealed door. The wood was so moldy and blackened with age that it barely looked like wood at all. There was no handle, just a small opening where fingers could slip in and pull. Alexander reached for it. Something in me screamed for him to stop. I don’t know why. Maybe I already knew, deep down, what was waiting behind that door. But he pulled it open anyway, grunting as a laboring creak filled the air. The first thing I noticed was the stench. It was putrid, suffocatin
