Abigail

*

I lowered myself onto the bench Marceline had gestured to, my posture stiff despite the serene setting of the indoor garden. As she sat down beside me, scent of freshly sheared greenery mingled with the faint traces of expensive perfume that clung to her silk blouse. The garden was almost tranquil, if not for the tension coiling tight in my chest.

I needed to tread carefully.

Marceline turned slightly toward me, an elegant picture of poise as she clasped her hands over her knee. "So," she said lightly, amusement lacing her voice, "to what do I owe this visit?"

I swallowed and forced a pleasant smile. "I wanted to ask why you didn’t inform me that you had met with Liam. My brother."

AbigailI rose from the bench, my movements stiff with contained fury. The realization hit me like a slap to the face; Conrad wasn’t the only one trying to trap me in this marriage. Marceline was just as involved in locking this door to the prison called my marriage. She had spoken so calmly, so elegantly, as if what she was doing wasn’t manipulation, as if she wasn’t trying to back me into a corner using my own brother as leverage. Her words had been a veiled ultimatum, wrapped up in silk and grace. I walked out of the indoor garden without so much as a goodbye, with more force in my stride than was necessary. My breath came short and sharp as anger clawed at my insides. How dare she?How dare she look me in the eye and insist that I belonged in this family, knowing full well how Conrad had treated me? She had seen how he paraded Susanna through our home, making it clear wh

AbigailI pulled out my phone and typed a quick message to Daniel’s real number, asking if we could meet within the next hour. The response came almost instantly.“Of course. I’ll send you a location.” A second later, the location popped up on my screen; Centennial City Park. I entered the address into my car’s GPS and started the drive. It wasn’t far, just about fifteen minutes away. When I arrived, I parked under the shade of a large oak tree and took a deep breath before stepping out.The park was peaceful, the kind of place you came to when the chaos of the world was too much. Birds chirped from the branches above, children ran across the grass with carefree laughter, and couples strolled hand in hand, completely absorbed in each other.I found a bench under a wide tree and sat down, letting my gaze wander

AbigailI could feel exhaustion pressing down on me as I drove home. A hot bath was the only thing I needed as soon as I got home, as well as a full eight hours of sleep. But of course, I could never catch a break. As soon as I stepped inside the house, I knew something was wrong. I paused in the entryway, my heartbeat slowing to something heavy and cautious. My fingers curled around the strap of my bag as my gaze flicked toward the living room. And there he was, Conrad. Seated on the sofa like he belonged there, like this was his home, not my mother’s. His head lifted as soon as he heard me enter, his gaze locking onto mine. Instantly, my mood went sour.I forced myself to push down the immediate irritation clawing at my throat at the sight of him. After such a long day, this was not what I needed. My t

AlexanderI leaned back in my chair, rubbing my temples as the latest audio file played through my headset. The sound of Susanna’s voice filled my ears; agitated, and unmistakably bitter.“…and what does he expect me to do? Just sit around and wait for his scraps like some obedient little wife?”Daniel, seated across from me with a pair of headphones on, was listening to a different recording, but if I were a betting man, I’d stake all my shares on the fact we would give each other similar feedback. This was yet another complaint about her ‘miserable existence’. The audio files Abigail had sent were neatly organized, each one labeled with a date and time. There were nearly a hundred hours in total. So far, between Daniel and me, we had managed to get through thirty-on

Susanna I scrolled through my phone, barely processing the words on the screen. The longer I stared, the angrier I became, my fingers tightening around the device. I shouldn’t have been in this hospital bed. I shouldn’t have had to inconvenience myself like this, all because of Abigail. If not for her, I wouldn’t have had to go to such lengths. If not for her, things would have fallen into place a long time ago. My jaw clenched as I forced myself to breathe in deeply. There was no use getting worked up. I had already done what I needed to do. I had played my part perfectly at the company and when Conrad had brought me to the hospital, I had let the doctors fuss over met so Conrad could get a glimpse of the fragile, wronged woman in need of his protection. Soon, all of this would pay off. The door creaked open, and I immediately brightened, tossing my phone aside. I didn’t even have to see who it was, I could feel it. Conrad. A smile spread across my lips, and for a short moment, m

Abigail The warm water from my shower had done wonders to ease the tension in my shoulders, and as I stepped out of the bathroom, wrapped in a fresh towel, I felt lighter than I had since I had seen Conrad earlier. Maybe it was the satisfaction of standing up to Conrad, or maybe it was simply the small joys of single hood. After changing into a comfortable set of pajamas, I settled on my bed with a warm plate of food. I wasn’t even that hungry, but something about the simple act of eating a meal with no interruptiosn felt like an indulgence. I propped my phone up against a pillow, letting the familiar voices of a series play in the background as I dug into my meal. I had already seen this show before, so I wasn’t paying much attention, my mind preoccupied with my food and the occasional thought of work that flitted through my mind. Then, a name caught my ear. Genesis. I blinked, my fork pausing midair. It was strange how the name sent a ripple through my thoughts but then something

AbigailI sat stiffly in the backseat of the car, my fingers gripping the fabric of my coat and twisting it before untwisting it. The ride was smooth, but I couldn’t say the same for my nerves. My stomach was a tangled mess of excitement and dread. Liam sat beside me, his leg bouncing slightly, and for once, I didn’t tell him to stop. The driver remained silent as he maneuvered through the city, his eyes focused on the road. But I kept glancing at him, that nagging feeling of familiarity still lingering. I couldn’t place where I had seen him before, but something about him set me on edge. Then, before I knew it, we were pulling up in front of the hospital.I blinked. It wasn’t what I expected. Not at all.In my mind, I had imagined some decrepit, isolated building, maybe some run-down 19th-century monastery-turned-hospital, hidden away from prying eyes. It was what I expected Conrad would have done. But this? This was a modern facility, with sleek glass windows reflecting the city lig

AbigailI struggled, twisting and jerking in Liam’s grip, but he wouldn’t let go. “Liam—stop! Let me go!” I gasped, wrenching my arms, but his hold was as strong as stone. He was avoiding my gaze, his jaw clenched tight. He knew this was wrong. I could see it in the tension lining his body, in the way his fingers trembled against my arms. But he still held me there. A sharp pain of betrayal tore through my chest, so raw and unexpected that for a moment, it was worse than my fear.Liam, the brother I had grown up protecting, the boy I had loved despite all his flaws, had just handed me over. Like I was nothing.Like I was disposable.“Liam,” I whispered, my voice shaking. “Why?”Still, he wouldn’t look at me. “I’m sorry, Bee,” he said quietly. “I didn’t have a choice.”“You always have a choice!” I shouted, my voice rising in panic. I struggled against him, shouting for help, but no one came. The hospital was busy, the staff likely preoccupied elsewhere, and this part of the floor was

AbigailI cleared my throat and asked the question I’d intended to the moment I’d walked in. “Is Roxy around? Roxanna Davis?”A young man at the closest desk looked up from his monitor, blinking as if startled to be directly addressed. “She just stepped out,” he said quickly, voice pitching upward.I was just about to ask when she’d be back when the door behind me opened, and there she was, Roxy, wearing her usual bright smile and commanding presence. She swept into the room like she owned it, and suddenly, the tension in the air cracked.“There you are!” she said, sounding genuinely pleased. “I was just thinking of calling you.”I let out a breath I hadn’t realized I was holding. As Roxy walked up beside me, she turned to face the team and clapped her hands once.“Everyone, meet our newest hire, Abigail Remington. I’m sure most of you have heard the rumors, but now you can put a face to the name, and better yet, see that she’s very much here, with us.”There was a chorus of soft gree

AbigailI glanced down at my phone as I sipped my morning tea, eyes flicking lazily across the news headlines. Surprisingly, and almost disappointingly, there were no new articles about me. No wild guesses about whether I was pregnant, on drugs, or secretly hiding out in a convent. The headlines had moved on. Now they were all about some high-profile actress and a secret pregnancy with an ex who just so happened to be married. I snorted quietly as I skimmed the details. They were likely to be as fake as the details of my ‘scandal’ had been.Maybe Susanna was too shaken from her experience at the club to run her mouth like usual. Or maybe, without Marceline’s protection, she'd decided to lie low for a while. I couldn’t say I blamed her. After what happened that night, after what I did to her, she was probably still picking pieces of herself up off the club floor. I didn’t regret it. Not one bit. And I also didn’t care to spend my morning thinking about her. With a high whistle, I set m

AbigailI had made a good choice picking this place. The sunlight filtered gently through the overhead canopy, painting soft shadows across the white tablecloth of the outdoor café. A cool breeze fluttered the ends of my scarf as I sipped my virgin mojito. It was my first time trying it,and the mint felt refreshing against my tongue. My fingers lazily scrolled through the news feed on my phone, half reading another round of speculative nonsense being peddled by gossip blogs about me. Alexander had taken the last ones down, but just a few hours later, another set had sprung up, and this time, I was apparently using the Remington name as front to peddle drugs, and this was the reason I had been so eager to stay out of the spotlight. The whole thing had become so predictable I could finish the article before reading the first paragraph.I let out a sigh and set my phone face-down on the table, taking another sip of my drink. I liked this café. It was quiet and tucked away in the middle o

The bottle, one of those thick green ones they served champagne in, burst apart like it had been made for this very moment. I screamed as the impact sent me sprawling sideways, a rain of jagged shards slicing into my scalp and cheek. My hands shot up instinctively, but they were too slow. I hit the floor hard, my temple throbbing, blood already trickling down into my ear.I couldn’t see or think properly. There was just pain and stars and the coppery taste of blood in my mouth. My hearing went dull, replaced by a high-pitched ringing. I looked up through blurred vision and saw what remained of the bottle rolling away from me on the floor, blood smeared along the edge.I let out a sound somewhere between a sob and a scream as the server came a step closer and stood above me. His eyes were cold and electric, and they m

SusannaThis chapter contains scenes of violence, viewer's discretion is advised! The music had all but stopped by the time I realized something was wrong. One minute, I was pressing into Aiden with the bass thudding through my veins, and the next, I was being yanked back like a ragdoll, nearly stumbling in my heels.Marceline’s face was etched in stone, full of loathing and menace. She looked like a ghost from some ancient nightmare, one that clawed its way out of the dark just to drag me back with it. I froze. The two hulking men flanking her were clearly not here to dance or enjoy the music. As I stared at them, I noticed something else. The dance floor was empty. Even the DJ had vanished, though seductive music still flowed through the club’s speakers. Aiden was just standing there, blinking at

SusannaI stormed out of Conrad’s office, my heels clicking loudly against the floor in my haste. My head echoed with every insult I didn’t bother to say aloud. If he wanted to be such an ass, fine. Let him sulk in his gloomy little corner. Honestly, I didn’t know what was wrong with him lately. First, he acts like we’re on the same page, like he wants Abigail ruined just as badly as I do. Then, when I hand him everything on a silver platter—the trending headlines, the public disgrace, even a reason for that witch of a woman to crawl back to him—he turns into some kind of monk. And for what? Because I suggested we celebrate? Because I tried to kiss him?I muttered under my breath as I passed his secretary. She chirped a fake sweet "have a good day" at me, and I didn’t even b

ConradThe performance reports for my marketing teams were waiting for me by the side of my desk, but my eyes were fixed on my phone screen. I reclined slightly in my chair, one leg crossed over the other, my finger steadily scrolling as article after article loaded. It had been nearly a full day but they were still there, dozens of them multiplying like weeds, no matter how many got reported or removed. And the longer they lingered, the more outrageous the headlines became."Like Brother, Like Sister? Inside Abigail’s Troubled Bloodline!" "From Rags to Riches to Madness: Abigail Remington’s Crumbling Fairytale."I chuckled under my breath. Public perception was like wet clay. Mold it right, and you could make anything stick. And now, Abigail&rsquo

AbigailI spooned the soup into my mouth like it was my punishment. Warm, bland, and textureless. I could tell it was good, probably some expensive place Daniel had ordered from, but to me, it might as well have been ash. I chewed mechanically, my eyes glued to the TV where an explosion lit up the screen in vibrant orange and yellow. The sound was muted. I wasn’t really watching. Just staring. The kind of stare where your eyes are open but your mind has long since wandered off into the darkness.I just needed to eat enough to keep my strength up. That was the logic. Strength for what, I wasn’t entirely sure. Everything, I suppose. For waking up tomorrow. For standing without swaying. For fighting. The truth was, my body felt numb and foreign to me. My limbs moved out of habit, not will. My chest felt hea

AlexanderI sighed and set the report down beside me on the bed, the paper softly brushing against the cotton sheets. My fingers went up to the bridge of my nose, rubbing slowly, hoping the dull ache building behind my eyes would ease with a little pressure. It didn’t. I leaned back against the headboard, letting my head rest there for a moment, trying to push back the weight of what I’d just read in Daniel’s report.I’d skimmed it yesterday, noted the key points, but tonight I’d finally read it through properly, line by line. And with each sentence, it had become more and more obvious that Liliana was tangled in something deeper than she had any right to be. She had ties I couldn’t yet understand how she had made, ties that enabled her to position herself at the heart of things. I picked up the report again and flipped to the section Daniel had titled Property Chain Discrepancies. According to his investigation, during the
