~Elizabeth~
You're fired.
Those words kept ringing in my ears. I lost my job. I used my own mouth to put myself in trouble. What have I done?
Naturally I expected him to kick me out of his car since I was no longer working for him, but instead, we still drove to Lotion Limited.
And I dared not talk. That would just be my demise. It was probably the last job I was going to be doing and since he didn't have a PA at that moment, he needed me.
................
I stayed quiet for about an hour in the the hall way of the company. My boss along with other company's bosses were in the conference room discussing whatever matter. And I was just seated. Again. For too long. And now my butt was beginning to hurt.
My boss had asked me to stay. Again. And with the seriousness in his voice, I wasn't planning on disobeying.
"Thank you Mr. Badmus. We appreciate your cooperation." A sigh escaped my mouth when I saw them begin to walk out of the room.
I snorted lowly when I saw some of the business men gave a one sided glance at me.
"Hey you brought the beautiful PA here too." I hissed when I heard the familiar voice say out.
I stood up from where I sat and turned to meet with the Badmus brothers.
"I know my brother cannot do anything without you." Kelvin Badmus, younger brother to David Badmus.
He was just a few years younger, but was exactly like his brother. Every characteristic, just one thing differentiating, Kelvin was jovial.
While David, my boss, was this always serious type of person. Kelvin, could play with every single thing.
"Good day sir." I forced a smile on my face.
It was already a bad habit for me.
"Naa. I've asked you to call me Kelvin." He told me, placing his hands around my shoulders.
With that position, I began to feel really uncomfortable. Trying my best not to get upset and over react, I took his hands off me.
I stared at David, my boss, to see he was engrossed in a conversation on his phone to attend to us.
"You know he didn't really need to bring you here." Kelvin told me.
That explained why I was the only one here.
"Well..." I just shrugged
"C'mon talk. You barely say words. You're too formal. Be free around me....okay, you wanted to say something before, say it." He urged to me to continue.
I gave one more glance at my boss. He had just ended the call.
"I'm not...his PA any more." I said truthfully.
"He promoted you?" Kelvin's eyes widened.
"No, I fired her." David cut in.
There was a moment of silence, till Kelvin bursted out laughing. Why was he laughing? What was so funny about being fired?
"I'm not joking." David glared at his brother.
"I know. I'm just laughing at how you'll become useless in work without her." Kelvin said and I found myself smiling. But I let it drop again before anyone noticed.
"She's stubborn. I don't want that kind of person in my work." He defended and I scoffed out.
I'm really passing my boundary today.
"Is something funny?" David glared at me. All I could do was look away.
"My brother, you've been working with her for about five years and you're just realizing she's stubborn. I bet you don't even know her name." Kelvin said and we both stared at him, waiting for my name to come out of his mouth.
"Adeyemi." He said.
"Adeyemi what?" I glared and I could've sworn I saw a flash of guilt in his eyes.
"I've worked for you for years and you don't know my name." I said in disbelief.
"Well I know you're Adeyemi and you're my PA. Isn't that enough?" He rolled his eyes.
"It doesn't matter. Just forget about it." I muttered crossing my arms.
"But on a more serious note. You need her, no, the business needs her. She has proved her loyalty to us and has worked really hard. Are you just gonna let one misunderstanding between the both of you ruin it." Kelvin told his brother.
Obviously the junior was wiser than the older one.
David didn't say anything, he just shoved his brother off and walked away. He really was arrogant. His Ego didn't let him see he was making a bad choice.
"Don't worry Lizzy, if he doesn't need you. I'll hire you and..."
"If I get to that car before you do. Know the chances of having your job back is at stake." David shouted and with that, I sprinted off, not forgetting to mumble a thank you to his brother.
..................
~2 weeks later~
"I'm sorry ma'am, he's busy right now and he says not to be disturbed." I stood as an obstacle in front of my boss's office.
"Ma'am? Don't address me as ma'am I'm not old." The lady in front of me said in her high pitched voice.
"My apologies." I kept it formal with her.
I knew exactly who she was. Sandra Collins. She owned a famous fashion line. She was also the girlfriend of my boss and the same lady I met with him at the boutique.
"Just get out of my way." She tried to push me but to no avail.
"As much as I want to, I can't. I'm just following orders." I kept my fake smile.
"What's going on here?" I turned to the sound of my boss voice.
"Miss Sandra seeks your attention. But you asked me not to let anyone in till you're done." I said nonchalantly.
"Can you just imagine the rubbish this girl is saying? I advice you get rid of her. She lacks respect." Sandra chipped in and I couldn't help but roll my eyes.
She didn't see, but David did and he returned it with a warning glare.
"Sandra. Just don't mind her, I asked her not to let anyone disturb me. Let's just go in." He placed a small kiss on her lips and I almost gagged.
"You're free to go to your office." He said to me and I frowned slightly.
"Sir it's closing hour. Every other worker has gone home." I told him.
"Yeah. You can go." He waved me off and I smiled.
Finally.
**********
I drove my car through the busy Lagos road. I thank God the traffic wasn't much. So getting to the hospital didn't take more than twenty minutes.
"Doctor?" I called out immediately I sighted the doctor I knew.
"Miss Adeyemi. Good evening." She greeted with a smile.
"Doctor, good evening. Please how's she doing." I asked nervously.
It was a daily job to visit the hospital after work to check on the only person I loved in the world. My mum.
Explaining how she ended up there was a very long story.
"She's fine. Better every day." The doctor smiled at me.
"Can I meet her?" I asked
"She's asleep. Be careful not to wake her." With what the doctor said I rushed to the wardroom.
I had gotten so used to this place. This room in particular. It wasn't big, but still not small. The walls were painted in blue, rhyming with the bed that my mum was laying on.
My mum.
Seeing her in that condition. Tubes connected into her body, needles pierced into her skin and an oxygen mask on her face for breathing. This condition brought enough tears to cloud my eyes. It has been like this for the past six months and every single day of visit brought pain to my heart.
***********
"What are you doing here?" I gasped out at the way my father shouted at my mum.
"I came to see my daughter. It's been long. Been about two years and I haven't set my eyes on my own daughter. I want to see..." Before she could finish, a loud slap landed on her face. It made my heart break to see her in tears and pain.
"I made myself clear before when I asked you not to show your face here." He told her.
I was in the kitchen peeking from the door. The strength and mind to show myself to my mother was not there. What would she think if she saw me like this. Pale, weak and lean. She'll hate herself. So it was better I stayed put. Besides going there is just going to increase my fathers anger.
"Please let me just say hi to her." She insisted and I knew it only made him more mad.
"You don't used to hear word in this life right?!" He began unbuckling his belt.
Oh no.
He took off his belt and lashed it on her skin making her fall to the ground.
"Mummy!" I found myself running towards her.
"My baby." She cried out when she saw me.
"What has he done to you?" She cried more and I cried along.
"Mummy please be going." I pleaded
"No. Not without you...."
"This stupid child." My father dragged me by my hair and threw me to the other end of the room. I hit my head on the wall and it was like I lost my brain for a moment.
I laid there helplessly and watched my mum get beaten by this monster.
"Please." I mumbled but he didn't hear.
He dragged my mum and threw her out of the house. I regained my strength and followed where he had thrown her. My house was a story building. And he had just thrown her down the stairs. I watched how blood began to flow down her body.
"Mummy." I clasped my hands around my mouth. "Please we need to take her to the hospital." I pleaded with my dad but he just went back into the house without care.
I rushed my way down the stairs to meet with her unconscious body. It was so painful. The thought of loosing her crossed my mind and I immediately shook my head.
"Mummy please don't die." I mumbled already feeling my body begin to shake again.
I shouted for help but no one was around. Knowing I wouldn't find help soon. I used all my strength to pull her up. She wasn't a plump woman. She was slim but I was still too weak to carry her well. It took about five minutes to be able to carry her to where people were. And the ones nice enough helped me carry her to the hospital.
When I was asked what happened. I had to lie. I lied. I could've just explained things to them. Everything to them. But I lied. Lied she fell from the stairs. Lied she slipped and fell.
People might not understand, but I knew what my father was capable of doing to me and her and my brother if he found out I told on him.
She spent weeks in the hospital and when she was discharged, she was discharged with a paralyzed leg. She lost one of her legs.
Her loosing her leg made me realize my dad would do anything to get rid of us. So instead of going back home to him. I ran.
I ran away from him. From everyone I knew. Even my mum. It was what was best.
************
"Omo mi." (My child). I slowly opened my eyes at the sound of my mother's voice.
"Mummy." I whispered out.
I then began to recognize my environment. The wardroom. My mum was here with me. I had fallen asleep on the chair beside her bed.
Another dream.
"How are you?" She smiled at me and I smiled back.
"I'm fine as long as you're fine." I told her.
"What about your brother?" The weakness in her voice was audible.
"He's in school. He's fine." I told her.
There was a moment of silence. She was just looking at me with a soft smile on her lips and her hand on my cheek. The smile she once had on her face soon turned into a weak pout. A shaky breath escaped her lips as tears clouded her eyes.
"Mummy, please, I don't want you to cry." I told her as tears also began to cloud my eyes.
"I'm so sorry." She pleaded.
"Don't be. You didn't do anything wrong." I told her.
"I did a lot of things wrong to you....you passed through a lot in this life at a young age all because of me." She cried.
I sighed out again. We're back to this topic. She blames herself for everything that happened to me. But it wasn't her fault. She knew I was passing through Hell with my father. But she didn't really know all about what went on.
In fact, no one but I and the monster knew what happened to me. I never told anyone what I really passed through. And I wasn't planning on talking. My life is already getting fixed up.
I worked my way to freedom and now I'm working and earning a good sum of money monthly. My younger brother is in the university now and my mum is recovering from the hospital. I plan on renting an apartment for her to leave in it she could just leave with me so as not to feel lonely.
"Mum look what I've become now. Everything would be alright. I promise. We're no longer gonna be in pain any longer. That's the past okay? Please just wipe your tears....in fact, I have a surprise for you...." I trailed off and brought out a small package from my bag.
"I realized something. Once in a while this place could get boring. So I bought you a phone." I handed her an android phone and watched how her eyes widened in awe as she saw the phone.
"I already installed a lot of games and my number is there in case you need me." I explained to her with a smile.
"Thank you. You didn't have to." She said and I hugged her.
"I love you Mum." I told her truthfully.
"I love you too. My daughter. I'm proud of you. Thank you." She whispered out.
I guess this is my own happy ever after.
~Elizabeth~"Can't we just grab a drink after work? It's been long since we spent time together." Chidima said, subconsciously going through some papers on my desk."Babe you know how busy I get. I want to go and chill out but....""But David keeps bugging you with work." She rolled her eyes"You could get fired for even staying here with me. You this girl better mind yourself." I warned her."I'm on my lunch break. You should be too." She said."I'm busy." I began clicking the keyboard of my laptop."You know he's not your husband."
~Elizabeth~"Okay, thank you, I'll make sure Mr Badmus knows." I cut the call and let out a loud sigh.It had been a week after that night. Mr Badmus left for a business trip and would be back by the end of day. So basically, I had a ton of work to do."Good day, this is B-Corp, how may I help you." I said my usual words to whoever called."Miss Adeyemi." I recognized the voice immediately."Oh good afternoon sir." I greeted my boss."Is everything ready?" He asked "Yes sir. The hall has been booked and the decorations are done already, invitations has been sent to everyone you listed and the entertainment is prepared and the workers has been told to leave earlier th
~Elizabeth ~"You're still not answering me." My boss crossed his arms and I gulped. Why, again did I come here? Oh wait, my mum."D-did you...." I shivered."Get in." He stepped aside and I obeyed.I gasped out when I entered the house. I've known him for years but never have I entered his house. It was big and with blue and white theme. The parlor setting alone was breath taking. The furnitures, everything was just...right. Beautiful. And neat."Great you're dripping water on my floor." I snapped back to reality at the coldness in his voice."Don't worry, I'm no
~Elizabeth ~"What did you prepare?" I heard the voice that gave me creepy chills all the time growl. My weak and frail body just stood in front of him and I was taught never to look him in the eyes so my gaze was on the ground. "I'm talking to you." His voice grew darker with rage and it made me more scared."T-there's n....nothing. I didn't....cook. You didn't leave any money." My voice trembled, so did my body. I knew how much he hated hearing no food at home but it was the truth. But today, I wasn't fortunate at all, he came home drunk and whenever he was drunk, bad things happen."What do you mean you didn't cook." He got up from where he sat and headed my way. I just stood there waiting for the worst to happen."I swear I would'v
~DAVID~"What...is this?!" I looked up to see Sandra pointing her phone at me. It was too early in the morning for me to start listening to her drama. And I'm not sure I woke up on the right side of the bed this morning. What am I saying, I'm always waking up at the wrong side of the bed."What do you want Sandra? Shouldn't you be at work?" I asked focusing on my computer again."What is this?" She kept pointing her phone at me. "It's a phone babe, what's the big deal?" I still didn't pay much attention to her."It's not the fucking phone. It's the picture. I went online and see what I saw on the news. So you now go out with other girls hun?" She asked with rage and I finally looked up to see her phone. Great. It was a picture of Eliza
*****The cold breeze blew right past me and I shivered as goosebumps began to grow on my skin.I didn't know what time it was, but I knew it was too late. Too late to turn back, too late to go back to the hospital... Too late to go back to him.It was a big risk I was taking to be walking alone in the dark, empty, narrow street.Clouds were forming in the sky, it was about to rain in any moment. I did not have shelter or clothes or food. To be honest, I didn't regret ever leaving that house. Not like he had food to provide for me."Hey who's there." I felt my heart stop for a moment and when it finally started beating, it increased it's pace.&n
Him.My legs grew weak, everything and everyone around me became a blur, my attention was only focused on the person that just walked in.My father. He looked older than the last time I saw him but I could never forget that face. Bushy brows, rough lips, wrinkled face and slightly grey hair.He didn't notice me, which I was grateful for because I didn't know what I would do if he had seen me. His face was as cold as ever and he was dressed in a t-shirt and a black trouser.Memories began flashing back, the slaps, the whips, the scares, the pain....everything came all at once. Tears clouded my eyes, making it hard for me to see clearly but my focus was still on him.
~Elizabeth~He was fond of doing this silly thing, keeping me in suspense, wanting me to ask questions that wouldn't get an answer.I hated it. Right from day one, when I came for interview. He didn't tell me if I got the job or not. Just told me to leave. And I didn't receive any message for about weeks until he finally told me to resume that instant. Now he is going to the hospital my mum was and he isn't telling me why.Wait,My mum, what would happen if I tell her I saw my dad? She honestly doesn't need to know about that. Especially in her health condition. I couldn't do that to her. Just the sight of him made me weak, imagine what it'll do to her."We're here. Are you coming down or you'll just stay zoned out
~DAVID~ "Are you sure you're okay?" I asked her again. "You've asked me that like a million times. I swear I'm fine. I should be asking you." She smiled softly. "Just a bruised cheek. I'll be alright." I told her. "I'll need you two to report a..." An officer began to speak but Kelvin interrupted him. "No, if you need anything meet me. Don't spoil their love time." He pulled the officer away from us. "Love time." I said more to myself than anyone else. She made it clear she didn't want anything to do with me in that aspect. So I promised not to push it. "Are you coming back to work?" I changed the topic entirely. "Yeah, about that," she started and I groaned out. "I'm sorry, but I can't come back. I mean I'd love to but..." she trailed off. "But?" I asked her. "But I want to try
~SEGUN~"What Sandra?" I said to her. I really wasn't in the mood for her type of talks."It wasn't part of the deal." She said."What wasn't part of the deal?" I dipped my hands into my pocket."Killing him or molesting her." She replied and I rolled my eyes."When you put it that way," I started, taking my time to do a small laugh. "It's changes nothing. You shouldn't be dumb enough not to know that if we let any of them go alive they'll rat us out." I told her."But...""But what Sandra?!" I shouted."But David can't die." Tears clouded her eyes."Don't be a baby Sandra. Other guys are out there. Hotter and more wealthy than he is. You can just go for his brother or something." I told her but it didn't help her stop crying.I could care less about what she felt or thought. She was usele
~DAVID~He was the one behind all this. Of course he was. I just never expected it to be him. We barely met, even when we did, just a formal conversation. So what exactly did he hold against me?"Segun what do you want?" A sigh left my mouth. I wasn't too shocked at his presence. He was a pathetic human being. Everyone knew that. All I didn't understand was why he brought Elizabeth into it."Well, you don't seem surprised, especially for someone who has been kidnapped." He smirked and I rolled my eyes."You hate me. I get it, a lot of people do. Why bring her into it? She has nothing to do with you." I spitted out."She's just beautiful." He replied, sending a disturbing smile to Elizabeth."Can we be serious here?" I glared at him."Oh, if I'm serious then you're going to end up dead."~Elizabeth~
~Elizabeth~"What is going on?" I asked quietly but no one gave an answer. David and Beauty were so interested in whatever they were doing–looked like they were packing up. "Guys..." I trailed off, moving closer to them. It had just been two days since I arrived from the hospital, they both made sure I stayed in the room to rest and according to David, his lawyer was handling Becca. Apparently, the proof I had with me was a very big deal to help them finish the case with ease. "We have great news!" Beauty shrieked with a huge smile on her face but she never stopped what she was doing. "What is it?" I pressed on, hoping to be a part of the joy ride they were having. Finally she stopped packing the clothes on the couch and turned to look at me. "Your boyfriend here is leaving for Nigeria in few hours. Come help me chase him away," she replied, going back to packing the clothes that were obviously his."This doesn't give you a reason to bring your so called boyfriend into this hous
~Elizabeth~Finally, my peace and quiet. Just void.No thoughts to think, no needs to worry about, no shame to be so afraid of. I rid myself of the world. They are bound to miss me but after a while they all would move on. It was best this way. "I need you not to die," A distant voice said. That's funny, I am already dead. It was all I ever wanted—not to be dead but to have peace. I had peace within myself and I enjoyed it. "I am not myself, I don't know what to do if you're not here to remind me," There it is again. That voice. I did not know who it was but it felt oddly familiar. They wanted me back. There was no way I could return, I made things worse for everyone. "Elizabeth please...."The voice again faded to thin air. That was it......Immediately, I was on a path with two ends. One led to where the faded voice was, and the other was more of my peace and quiet. What I had always longed for. I knew I didn't have much time to think thoroughly about it and what was b
David warned me, but as usual I almost never listened. The party sucked. Every other party I had been to was organized and mostly with less noise. This place was someone's house crowded by more humans than the place could contain and the music was so loud I felt my ears drums were going to pop out. Nothing they did here was moral, they drank and were mostly drunk, danced like whores and some of them made out at almost ever corner. It was like a typical teenage party only this time adults all over town attended it and behaved irrationally. Worst part is, I got separated from David since I came here. We had been here for almost an hour and he was nowhere to be found. It bothered me and I did try to look for him but I decided to stay put when some guys–men began to ask me to join them on the dance floor. I was in the living room, seated on the smallest part of the couch as other people sat beside me, shamelessly making out. I couldn't complain, he warned me not to go but I insisted a
~Elizabeth~"David get up. We are already late," I pouted trying harder to pull him up from the couch. "Is there no way I can change your mind?" He insisted to be settled on the chair, pretending to be interested in the series playing on the television. "We promised to go," I argued with him. "I know. But I've been to the party before and it never ends well," he looked at me for a moment but then turned back to the television. "Fine then, I'll drive myself there," I finalized. "You don't know the place," he gave me a smirk that did nothing to sooth me. "I'll use GPS. Or call Becca," I retorted with a hurl. "You don't have her number and I will not allow you get lost under my care," David rolled his eyes, making me narrow mine. "You are the most annoying person ever," I gave up, falling carelessly on the chair and slouching lower on it. I crossed my arms around my chest with a pouting face. We both kept mute for a little while longer. Turned out that he had the final say in th
~Elizabeth~ He was just downstairs, patiently waiting for me to get ready. I was ready—not really. My dress and make up was perfect and on point but mentally, I was no where near ready for the date. It was not only impromptu, but was also my very first date with anybody. Then he decided to tell me out of the blues!"Elizabeth, it's been four hours and counting. Come out!" David yelled, making me jerk. Picking up my purse, I took one last glance at the mirror and headed out of the room without thinking any further. When I reached the living room, I found David seated on the couch looking bored as hell. As usual, he wore a tuxedo and it fitted him well."I'm ready," I called for his attention. He looked up at me, his eyes immediately giving me a once over. My face heated up but I enjoyed that a man was checking me out. "I told you the dress was perfect for you. You look beautiful," he complimented and I but my button lip so he didn't notice how shy I became. If I was a few shades l
~DAVID~Her voice was nonchalant and quiet as she spoke, she held no emotions in her eyes and I knew instantly that she was mad in her own world at me. I managed to shove Becca away from me and grabbed the cup of coffee that finally reached me. "Elizabeth I–""She's the girl everyone in town is talking about," Becca interrupted me and I hissed, face palming myself. "Good afternoon," Elizabeth smiled plainly at Becca. "Good afternoon, you're more stunning than they say you are," she moved towards Elizabeth and I hated my life immediately."Thank you," she replied. "You two have to come to the club meeting," she told Elizabeth. I wanted to say no but I was willing to let her take the decision. As long it got me to take her out. "What club meeting?" Elizabeth asked with furrowed brows. She was mad yet she found it easy to compose herself, it was stunning. "It's for us old friends to meet up and possibly make new ones. Who knows maybe we could be friends," Becca explained. "Yeah m
