The next morning, I wake up to Xavier shaking me awake. "Dionne, wake up. You need to get ready." he says, sounding slightly annoyed. Not angry, like he used to be.

I guess that's something good.

"Okay, okay, I'm getting up." I say, stretching.

"I'll be at your school earlier today. School ends at, what, 4:15?" he asks, looking down at his ring-filled hands.

"Yeah." I say.

"I'll be there by then. Now get up, unless you don't want breakfast before you leave." he says, sliding out of my room.

"Thank you." I yell after him, getting up to go get in the shower. When I get out of the shower, I smell the beautiful aroma of bacon and sausage cooking.

I get dressed and I put some perfume on, then I get downstairs while putting on my shoe. I must've stepped wrong because when I put my foot down, I slipped and twisted my ankle.

I would've hit the ground, but someone was holding me up. I look up and I see Xavier with concern in his eyes. It quickly fades into seriousness as he picks me up.

When I get to my feet, I wince, not being able to stand on my right foot. "Fuck!" I curse, grabbing my ankle.

He sits me on the floor and analyzes my foot carefully, every brush of his fingers sending electricity through me. He looks up at me slowly, locking his eyes with mine.

He felt it too. I can tell.

But obviously, he doesn't want me to know that. He carefully sits my foot down and stands up. "You've twisted it. It's already swelling. Stay here." he says.

And I do.

He brings me a plate of breakfast. Pancakes, sausage, bacon, eggs, and orange juice, and he sits on the floor in front of me. I look up at him with an arched eyebrow. "You want me to eat right here?" I ask.

"I wouldn't want you straining your ankle trying to get to the table. No disrespect, if you take offense to this, eating on the floor. Like a dog." he says.

"It wasn't that deep, Xavier." I say with a small laugh.

A small smile wells onto his face. It's the first time I've seen him smile this whole time.

"Eat. I'll call a doctor to look at your foot." he says.

I start to eat on the floor and Xavier watches me with careful eyes, analyzing my every move. "You act like I might get up and twist my ankle again." I say, smiling.

There it goes. His smile again.

"No, I'm ... I'm just trying to read you." he says, looking me over carefully.

"Y'know, I can speak. Ask me anything."

He looks at me carefully and inhales before asking me a question.

"Why're you so afraid of my father? I mean you've got good reason, it's just a question." I look around, and as if reading my mind, he says: "They're not here. My parents are out."

I look back at him and I hesitate again. But then I speak.

"He reminds me of my father. He's a very frightening man. He ... " then I cut myself off. Why would I even try to say that?

"He what?" he asks, wanting me to say more.

"I can't tell you." I say. He scoots closer to me and sighs, showing vulnerability for the first time.

"I told myself to get to know more about you because whether I like it or not, I'm starting to notice more and more that every day you're here, I grow attracted to you, and not just because we're getting married, but because I just am. I know I'm not very good at showing emotion, but it's how I feel. And I want you to trust me." he says, now inches away.

He backs away and his eyes go wide, surprised at his sudden outburst of emotion. Still, I take his words into consideration and I sigh.

"Can I show you something?" I ask. He nods his head and I ask him to help me up. He picks me up and carries me upstairs and I try my hardest not to get too comfortable.

He puts me down on his bed and I start to take off my shoes. I take off my shirt and he looks away.

"Would you like some privacy?" he asks, still looking away.

Well, here goes trusting him.

"No. It's okay to look, I have underwear on." I say. He continues to look away. "I'm trying to show you something, Xavier." I say, laughing.

He turns to me slowly and his eyes go wide when he sees the bruising on my body.

"Dionne ... " he says. "What happened?" he asks, as I turn around to let him see my back.

"You have to promise not to tell anyone." I say before telling him what I have to say.

"You can trust me. I promise." he says.

I take a deep breath before speaking.

"My father, he was ... abusive. Physically, verbally, and emotionally." I finally admit. "I tried standing up to him one time and this was the result. He beat me black and blue with his bare hands. There were more scars, but they healed and went away over time." I say. "It's the reason I flinch at the slightest things. I never know what might happen. It's also why I don't speak much to you or your father. I'm scared of what might happen to me. What you might do to me. You're ruthless. Merciless. I wouldn't want to do anything to piss you off."

"I hope that's not how you think of me. Towards you anyway." he says.

"I'm starting to see a little more that that's not who you are at all." I say blushing, looking at him in the mirror.

"Dionne, I'd never put my hands on you. Never, not in that way. I know I may come off as disrespectful to women I don't know, but I'd never lay a hand on any woman, especially not my wife." he says.

He's been keeping his distance this whole time, but I don't say anything, I just pick up my clothes and I hand them to him. He helps me put my shirt on and then puts me on the bed.

"I'll get you some shorts so you won't have to wiggle into these." he says, going through his drawer.

He gives me a pair of shorts and helps me get them on. He picks me up and takes me downstairs to the living room and picks up his phone. And calls a doctor.

"She'll be here in 15 minutes." he says, gently smiling at me.

I don't know how he got to this point overnight, but I'm not gonna complain. I like it.

Days later, my ankle's healed up pretty well. Me and Xavier have gotten closer, not too much, as he's not very open about his feelings, but it's progress. Walking through the university, me and Charlotte finally sit and eat lunch together. "So tell me, how's it going with Brady?" Charlotte asks. "God, nothing, Charlotte! We're just friends-" "Blah blah blah. Don't give me that shit, 'just friends' my ass." she says playfully. "It's not shit! I told you, I'm seeing someone." I say, eating the grapes I packed this morning. "Yeah? So where is this guy? Does he go here? Does he live around here, is he close?" she questions. "I'm not telling you anything Charlotte!" I say, nudging her arm. "I'm not gonna believe you until I see him for myself." "You're insistent." I say, palming my forehead. "You could've saw him the other day. He was here. He's the one who broke Josh's nose." I say. "He's the one who did that? Everyone said he knocked him out off one punch. If he can do that, imag

So this is it. I’m going on a date with Xavier. I can’t say I expected this, but I guess it was bound to happen. I’ve already picked out a dress and shoes to wear but I’m nervous about tonight, for what reason? … I don’t really know. I think I’m just overreacting. I shake the worry from my mind and I start to get dressed. I decide to put on a tight red dress and red heels with a ribbon that I have to tie at the back. When I’m ready, I fix my hair and I go downstairs where I find Xavier waiting by the door for me. “Look at you.” He says. “You don’t look too bad yourself.” I comment. He walks up to me and grabs my hands. His hands are big yet soft against mine. He rubs my hand with his thumb and then slips them from mine. “Could you tie these?” I ask, turning around, leaning on the wall for support. He gets down to tie the ribbons around my ankles. When he rises, he looks me up and down and turns toward the door to get on his phone. Minutes later, he guides me to the car and helps

Xavier’s POV: The next morning, I wake up and the first thing I do is put on my suit. I need to attend a few meetings today. Money’s on the line. I walk downstairs and my father stops me from going any further than the living room. “Father.” I say. “Xavier.” He responds. He’s never called me his son. Ever. I still try to respect him though. That’s how my mother raised me. ‘Where’s that girl?” “Are you serious?” I say, squinting in annoyed confusion. “I’ve done nothing wrong.” He says, looking confused. “You may be the type of man to disrespect women and do whatever it is that you do with them, but my wife won’t be one of them. As long as I’m with her, you’re gonna learn to respect her, or I’ll make you, and that’s a promise. I don’t care how I have to do it, and you know I don’t. I’ve never disrespected you a day in my life, but when you disrespect her, you disrespect me, which means I disrespect you, I just want to make that clear.” I say, finally walking off and walking out t

Dionne’s POV: I finish getting dressed and I step out of my room only to hear something in Xavier’s room. As I walk toward the staircase, he opens his door and walks out. He obviously doesn’t see me when he walks by, so I walk by his room door and I see one of the maids getting dressed and she can barely stay on her feet. I scoff and I go downstairs and meet him. “Let’s go.” He says as I walk by him. He shuts the door behind us and we walk to the car. When I get in the car, the guard holding the door open closes it. The other guard on Xavier’s side closes his door and the driver pulls off. I cross my arms and I start a conversation. “I thought you said you didn’t have a chauffeur.” I say, trying to hide my anger. “I do. I just don’t use him all the time.” He says, scrolling through his phone. I stay quiet but the constant anger picking at my brain gets the best of me. “Did you fuck her? You smell like cheap perfume and sex.” I say, already knowing the answer. He closes the slid

I sit against the house, blood pouring from my leg as Anthony writhes in pain in mom’s arm. Xavier hangs up the phone and runs over to me and takes his tuxedo off and rips his blouse underneath off, then rips the sleeve off to tie it around my thigh where the blood is seeping out. He ties a knot tightly around my thigh, making me grunt in pain. He stands up and puts his hands out to me. I look up at him and I take his hands as he lifts me up. “Are you okay? Well no shit, but … “ he cuts himself off looking at me with worried eyes. “I’m fine.” I say back, limping over to Anthony. “I just got off the phone with some people who’re gonna get your father. We can discuss funeral arrangements later if that’s okay with you.” He says, helping me over to Anthony. “That’s fine.” I reply, paying more attention to Anthony. “I don’t have everything I need here.” Mom says. “Could they come home with us? Please?” I ask Xavier. “That’s a risk. You should know that better than anyone. My family

It’s been about 2 weeks since me and Xavier finally admitted to ourselves that we’re ready for one another and it’s honestly been good. I’ve been going to school everyday, he’s been picking me up and finally, he’s let his guard down for me. But he can switch it up, quick. One moment he’s in the car, telling me how much he loves me, then the next, he’s arguing and cursing with someone for something they said to me, then he’s cold. But that’s only out in public. When he’s alone with me, he’s vulnerable and open, and he keeps his walls down. In front of his parents, he shows them that he loves me, he’s just not as vulnerable. Still has to put on a strong, hard face for his father. Speaking of fathers, mine’s funeral is this week. I’m honestly glad he’s gone, then again, he’s my father, so there’s a sliver of me that still wants someone to call a father. That’s another time though. As me and Xavier pull up to the entrance of the university, my hand in his, he lifts my hand to his lips an

That night at dinner, Xavier sits in his spot next to me, and as we eat. Suddenly, Daxine speaks. “So you two, when’s the wedding?” she says excitedly. “About a year or two from now.” Xavier says. We agreed that we wanted a big wedding. Xavier says he wants it to be black and red themed but I want something light. We’re nothing the same which makes it all a bit more interesting. “Or two?” she says, surprised. “Yeah. We want it to be big.” Xavier says. “You always were extravagant.” Daxine says. “Dad in his office?” he asks. “Yeah. Hasn’t come out all day.” Xavier’s father has shown himself less and less every day. I think it’s because he wants to avoid Xavier in case he says something he doesn’t like. I don’t really know why, so I’m not gonna assume. It’s not really like him to hide. That’s where Xavier gets it from. After dinner, Xavier goes upstairs and gets in the shower, and I help Daxine with the dishes. When I go upstairs to Xavier’s room, I can’t find him. ‘Baby, wher

Xavier’s POV: I stand in the mirror fixing my tie while Dionne fixes her dress and checks her makeup and hair. “You ready?” I ask, watching as she takes a final look at herself in the mirror. “Yeah.” She says, turning around to walk up to me, wrapping her arms around my neck. “How you feeling?” I ask. “Don’t know. This feels weird. Going to my dad’s funeral is something I never thought would happen. I knew he’d leave one day, I mean he had it coming .. but not this soon. I mean I know it sounds heartless, but in a way I’m glad he’s gone. That fear of running into him is gone and I’m happy to have that kind of relief.” “That’s not heartless. Him abusing you and your brothers, that’s heartless. He deserved what he got. I’m sorry if that makes me a monster but other people seem to already think that’s what I am.” She looks down in thought, pausing. “We don’t have to go if you don’t want to.” I say. “No. I have to be there for my mom. She hated him for the fact that he abused her ki

She falls to the floor and I catch her in my arms as she tries her hardest to breathe. Tears prick at my eyes as I watch the life drain out of her. I hear three gunshots ring out and I hear a body drop to the floor, but I never take my eyes off of my wife. I sit there, crying like a baby as I hold her in my arms, hugging her body against mine as I rock with her. She puts her bloody hands on my face as tears flow from her eyes. "Baby, look at me. Xavier's POV: As I stand at the altar, my mind races. All I can think about is seeing her. Feeling her, touching her, kissing her. My nerves are on fire as I think about finally seeing her and being able to hold her in my arms again. The scenery is beautiful. It's huge. I stand at the altar, waiting for her and all of a sudden, music starts to play and the side doors open, the grooms coming from the left and the bridesmaids coming from the right, meeting in the middle to lock arms and walk down the aisle and go their separate ways. Five minutes pass by and Camara's little sisters come down the aisle, dropping flowers as they walk down the aisle. Then those big white doors open to reveal my wife in a huge white dress. She looks gorgeous. She walks down the aisle with a veil over her face, her brother on her arm as she walks with a bouquet of red flowers. She hands me an iced coffee and it doesn't taste like a regular iced coffee. "What's in this?" I say, looking at the cup. "Tequila." Riley says, sitting on the bed with me and Amber. I nearly choke, laughing. "Tequila?" I say, laughing. "We want you to wake up feeling like the best bride in the world. So we gave you coffee-tequila." Amber says. "Where's Mara?" I say, looking around. "She's coming. She just called and said Xavier was awake. Just got up, she said." Amber says. I smile and I pick up my phone, dialing Xavier's number. 2 days later Xavier's POV After a night of earth shattering sex and mind-blowing orgasms, I had to leave Dionne. She says it's bad luck to see your bride before the wedding. So here I am. Up at 9 A.M, in the biggest master bedroom Zeno's mansion had to offer, processing what's happening today as I lie in bed. I get up and I put on my slippers, brush my teeth, wash my face, then I go downstairs with sweatpants and a navy blue short-sleeve shirt on. I go downstairs to the island in the kitchen and Z's making coffee for the both of us and Camara. "Thanks for letting me crash here last night." I say, as he slides my coffee across the table to me. "Don't thank me. It's the least I could do for the groom-to-be." he says, winking at me as he stirs his coffee and leans onto the island. Camara comes down with Bentley and she gasps in shock for the sake of the baby. "Who's that?" Camara says, looking down at Bentley. "That's uncle Xavier! Say hi, baby!" she says as I smile at Bentley. She

Xavier's POV: As I sit in my office smoking a cigarette, stressed from the phone call I've just received, Dionne walks in, with a smile, immediately brightening my mood a little. "Oh no. What's stressing you?" she says, her smile fading into frustration as she walks in and sits on my desk, crossing her arms. "Nothing." I say, not wanting to burden her. "Xavier, you only smoke when something's stressing you. It's never random." she says, arching her eyebrow, knowing I'm lying. I grab her hips and I pull her onto my lap, letting her straddle me and look into my eyes. I put out my cigarette and I sit back in my chair, looking up into her eyes. "What's wrong? Talk to me." I say, changing the subject. Ignoring the fact that I changed the subject, she shrugs and answers. "Mom wants to keep the kids for tonight, tomorrow and the next day so we can have some time alone before and after our wedding day." she says. "And you're asking me if that's okay?" I say, my eyebrow shooting up. "Ye

The next day, I wake up and the thrill of my wedding day coming so soon fills me to the brim, making me smile. I turn over to see the love of my life sleeping peacefully, something I'm not used to seeing. I place soft kisses on his lips throwing my leg over his stomach as I sit up to hover over him as I kiss him. I feel his body move beneath mine as he grunts, then I feel his hands travel to my ass to squeeze it, making me hum to myself. "Good morning." he says, his voice deep, yet soft. "Good morning." I say, smiling. "So, I have to go out again today." I say, moving his hair from his eyes as I look into them. "Okay. Do what you need to do. Just-" "Be safe. I will. I love you." I say, cutting him off and kissing him. I get up and I take a shower, then I brush my teeth, then do my skincare routine and after I'm finished, I put on some black leggings, sweatpants, a long sleeve shirt, and a puffer coat with mittens and a warm, fluffy hat and ear muffs. You're his fiance!" "Yeah, and who are you?" I ask. "Dionne, meet my cousin's girlfriend, Star. Star, meet Dionne. You already know what she is to me, obviously. She's really friendly, but she's a beast on the inside. Only when she has to be of course." Xavier says, introducing us. I flush red at my mistake. "I'm sorry for pouncing on him like that.
