Texic Group had been riding high for months. Sales were soaring, branches now spanned all fifty states, and negotiations were underway to plant the retail giant in foreign markets. Just two days earlier, the American Business Awards had notified headquarters in New York that Texic had been nominated for second-highest private employer in the nation—behind only the government itself.

Yet the thought of losing five billion dollars sat like lead in Jason’s stomach. To most tycoons, that sum might be pocket change. Not to him. He had clawed Texic out of bankruptcy with his own hands after Andrew’s death. Every dollar mattered.

He studied the grizzled man standing before him. Mr. Bransen’s face was lined with age and worry, spectacles perched on his nose. The old financial advisor had never flinched under pressure—not when Andrew was alive, not now.

“Well?” Jason said, voice edged with impatience. “You might want to start talking, Mr. Bransen. I was about to close for the day.”

Bransen remained calm. “Yes, sir.”

He tapped one finger against his upper lip, a habit Jason had seen a thousand times.

“I’ve been reviewing the company’s balance sheets for weeks. I noticed anomalies in the asset figures.”

Jason leaned forward. “Anomalies? Speak plainly.”

“The branches are managed like independent companies, correct? Not fully consolidated in day-to-day reporting.”

Jason nodded curtly.

“So I pulled the individual branch reports and compared them to the official consolidated sheet. The numbers don’t align. At first the difference looked minor—rounding errors, perhaps. But when I added them up…” Bransen’s voice dropped. “Millions missing. Then tens of millions. Then billions.”

Jason’s pulse hammered in his ears. “You’re saying someone’s been skimming?”

“I’m saying the discrepancy is too consistent to be coincidence.” Bransen lifted his briefcase onto the desk and opened it with steady hands. He withdrew a stack of documents and slid them across. “These are the branch chiefs’ latest reports.”

Jason snatched them up. He flipped through pages of charts—red lines for declines, blue for gains. New York showed drops in the millions. Florida, Texas, Illinois—similar patterns. He scanned faster.

Then he reached California.

The chart was different. Arrows pointed both ways in erratic zigzags. No clean pattern. No logic.

His stomach dropped.

“California,” he muttered.

Bransen adjusted his spectacles. “Exactly. Every other state follows a predictable loss-and-gain rhythm. California does not.”

Jason’s grip tightened on the papers. “Someone is embezzling. And they’ve been doing it for a while.”

“Yes, sir. I believe so.”

Jason lifted his head slowly. His eyes felt heavy, dark. “More than five billion?”

“I suspect far more.” Bransen pulled one final sheet from the pile and pointed to a highlighted line. “The transfers don’t stay inside Texic. They’re routed through another entity—a large company, from the look of the patterns. Someone outside is helping.”

Jason sat back, the chair creaking under him. Betrayal from within. And from without. After everything he’d sacrificed—nights without sleep, deals sealed at dawn, the street life he’d left behind—his empire was bleeding from wounds he hadn’t seen.

He thought of Andrew’s voice, steady and sure: “Surround yourself with people like Bransen, son. They’re rare.” The old man had been right. Bransen had dug through fifty balance sheets when no one else would have bothered. He had warned Jason when others stayed silent. He had given loyalty without asking for reward.

Jason felt a sharp twist of guilt. He had claimed too much credit for Texic’s rise. Bransen—and Andrew before him—had carried more of the load than he ever admitted.

“Thank you,” Jason said quietly. The words felt inadequate.

Bransen gave a small nod. “It’s my duty, sir.”

Jason exhaled. “What now?”

“We need to act carefully. Confronting the wrong person could tip them off. We need proof—hard proof—before we move.”

Jason rubbed his temples. His mind flashed to Angelina. The two million. Her silence after the transfer. The screaming earlier. Was it coincidence? Or another leak he hadn’t noticed?

He pushed the thought aside—for now.

He picked up the phone and dialed Alex. She appeared moments later, hesitant in the doorway.

“Summon the board for tomorrow,” Jason ordered. “Nine a.m. sharp.”

“Yes, sir, but—”

“No buts. Just do it.”

Alex flinched at his tone, then nodded. “Yes, sir. And… the driver?”

“Tell him to prepare the car. I’m leaving.”

She curtseyed and hurried out.

Mr. Bransen gathered his briefcase. “I should go as well. I’ll prepare a confidential summary for the board.”

Jason stood. “Thank you again. For everything.”

Bransen paused at the door. “You built this company from nothing, Jason. Don’t forget that. We’ll fix this.”

The door closed softly behind him.

Jason glanced at the clock: 2:00 p.m. on the dot.

He arranged his desk in mechanical silence, thoughts of Angelina rushing back unbidden. Her demands. Her cold messages. The way she looked at him lately—like he was a bank account with legs.

He swallowed hard.

If his own company could be robbed blind under his nose, what else had he been blind to?

For the first time in years, he wondered what it would feel like to walk away. Not forever. Just long enough to breathe. To meet people who didn’t know his name or his fortune. To see if anything real still existed outside this glittering cage.

He grabbed his coat.

Tomorrow the board would fight over the company’s future.

Tonight, he needed to decide whether he still wanted a place in it.

Just like any other Sunday, Selena curled herself comfortably in the blanket and was unwilling to get up. She would never get up in that early morning cold, and even if anybody bothered asking, the comfort of the bed over mucus would be her answer. But that was not all. Sundays were the only free days she had in a week. That meant she could get up at any time it pleased her. Selena rubbed her closed eyes when she felt something. Slowly, she tried to open them but ended up closing them again. Through the frame of the window, the rays of sunlight hit her so violently that she wished she had closed the curtains last night. Just as she was about to go down and close it, a knock sounded at the door. "Don't tell me you are still sleeping at this time, Sely" it was her younger sister, Bethy."Just when I thought this would be my best day" Selena mumbled. She opened the door and let Bethy in. "What?" she asked when Bethy kept on staring at her. "I hold nothing against you, except for t

You're kidding right babe? Just tell me you are not being serious" Selena rolled her eyes when she read the text message from her best friend, Jenny. She rubbed her fingers together and with a vicious snarl, she texted back. "Like really babe. The party is so boring". She was about to send it but on second thought, she decided to add it. "But that doesn't mean I'll spend the whole time texting with you, so bye for now. I'll tell you everything when I get back home", then she sent it. With a lazy sigh, she put the phone back in her purse and decided to pay full attention at the party again. Ever since Mikey brought her to the party, the only thing interesting she had done was being introduced to Mikey's rich friends. Oh, yeah, and listening to some sweet talks from one of the rich guests. In the next three hours after that sweet speech, Selena had been texting witph Jenny and even when she told her she couldn't continue talking anymore, Selena had begged and promised to buy her cof

Two million dollars? Did Jason hear correctly or was his mind playing tricks on him? The MC introduced him as the guest of honor, before thanking Angelina for donating two million dollars. Was it the same money he had given to her?Jason turned slowly as if a lump had suddenly grown on his neck and focused his gaze on her, hoping for any signs from her that it wasn't what he thought. But to his surprise, she didn't look his way or make any effort to explain anything to him. Her attention was glued to the MC, with a beaming smile on her. Jason turned away from the sight of Angelina before he became too enthralled in just watching her. Her smiles always had this effect on him but this time, he needed a straight mind in order to address the situation at hand. "...and that of course would be the last slot. Now ladies and gentlemen, put your hands together as we have a word from the guest of honor, sir Jason Tynara".Jason heard Boris Daren say. He didn't realize he'd spent quite much t

It took Jason and Angelina just about ten minutes to drive from the building to the hotel the party was supposed to be organized, but even at that distance, Jason found himself being accompanied by a convoy, a feat he never liked. When he had protested, Angelina reassured him that it was for their safety and protection. Jason had much pride in his rags-to-riches story and was particularly grateful for the riches and power that came with his billionaire status, but the fact that he could not move around without any bodyguards always made him uncomfortable. "But son there is a way you can walk around this" He could remember the conversation he had with Mr. Bransen a few months ago. "You do. How do I do it then?" Jason had asked."please do tell me…..""Well, the answer is simple. Get a coach and train your bones so tough that your security wouldn't matter anymore""Wait, you mean I should go to the gym.? But that doesn't…….""No son, not the gym. I mean get a teacher to teach you so

Selena was almost wordless when Mikey stopped the car a few meters away from the main entrance to the hotel. Instead of going down, she remained fixed as if pinned to her chair and gazed out the front door glass at what appeared to be security agents at the entrance. They seemed to be the search party who inspected the guests before letting them enter. Being five in sight, they wore black suits, dark sunglasses, and coiled tube earpieces. One of them had a data pad in his hand from which he seemed to ID the guests, while two others had hand-held metal detectors to scan those who had been approved by the data pad. The rest of the security agents were placed at the door and opened it as guests walked in. Nevertheless, it wasn't the security protocol that carried Selena's attention but the caliber of gusts that waited to be checked. The men and women were all dressed in clothes Selena had seen only on TV before. The hands of the men were adorned with watches that she knew were worth hun

"Baby! I'm almost done" Jason said frustratingly to Angelina."You've said that for almost Twenty four times in an hour already"She put her hand to her face and hissed "Oh gosh I can't believe this is happening right now"."But it's not that late. The party starts at 7 right? we can still make it" Jason assured."That's what you always say. I don't know if you care about me. You hardly have any time for me. I'll be waiting in the sitting room" Angelina picked up her purse and walked out of the room noisily in her high-heeled shoes and slammed the door behind her. Jason sighed, put down the shoe he had in his hand and sat on the bed. ''well, it isn't my fault we're late''. He said to himself though not aloud. The Jason that had been four years ago was different from the present one. Once, he thought rich people had no problems but looking at the expensive shoes and clothes in his closet, he soon realized he couldn't make a concrete choice on which to wear. Suits were considered the
