"Stay still"
"So that you can poke my eyes out? No thank you"
"If you keep moving I promise I will gouge your eyeballs out and feed them to lucky the stray dog"
Clarisse refrained from pointing out that Lucky wasn't a stray dog but had an owner. They were just babysitting him because Hans was throwing a party and didn't want his dog to get in the way. According to him, Lucky could be a little unfriendly to strangers and he didn't like crowds. But Twila was convinced both the dog and master were fishy. She asked why Hans didn't tie him up or ask his neighbor to look after him instead of bringing him all the way to their house. She'd tried telling her that it was because he trusted them but when Twila was being difficult, nothing anyone said could get through her. So Clarisse stopped wasting her time.
"If he bites or even looks at me the wrong way, that Hans will get it from me"
"Why do I have a feeling that you don't dislike Lucky but Hans?"
"Oh my God, you just figured that out?" Twila asked dramatically rubbing off excess make-up with a finger then taking a step back to appreciate her handiwork "Perfect. Now let's go"
"Let me change..."
"I won't let you dress yourself up just to impress that asshole. You look fine the way you are"
Clarisse looked down at her jeans and t-shirt "Then what was the make-up for?"
"Consider it your armor. I made it look natural so no one will know you have any make-up on. Let people think you're a natural beauty"
"Think? Twila, I am a natural beauty"
"Don't start with your narcissistic comments. Let's go"
She hesitated. Her friend was dressed in a black and gold figure hugging dress. Paired with heels and a glittering purse, she looked like she was heading to a red carpet event. While she on the other hand was in jeans, t-shirt and sneakers. Polar opposites. That's what they were. Not that it bothered her. Clarisse knew she was beautiful and wasn't about to start comparing herself to anyone. The problem was that they were going to her boyfriend's party. She wanted him to be proud of her. All his friends would be there. What if he wanted to show her off? She couldn't show up looking shaggy
"No. Let me change real quick. I'll be right..." Twila grabbed her arm and dragged her outside.
"By the time we get there, the party will be over. Let's go"
"But... But..."
"Let's go. Even in rags you will still be the most beautiful woman there"
She nodded in agreement "You're right. I don't need clothes or make-up to make me stand out"
"Whatever you say, your highness" Twila retorted handing her the car keys.
"You can't call me your highness then make me drive you to the party. It's unacceptable"
"I swear your ego is on another level. Remember, keep a low profile. Do not order people around. They're not your servants"
"My boyfriend is hosting the party. Why should I keep a low profile?"
"All the girls in campus hate us because you walk around thinking you're above them and treat them like your servants. If the boys start hating us too I won't spare you"
"What will you do? Report me to the Dean?"
Twila huffed in annoyance. Sometimes she wondered why she was friends with her. Then she'd remember that fateful day and think that it was okay for Clarisse to order her around. On the outside she looked vain, bossy. Everyone thought she was obsessed with her looks and cared about nothing else. But Twila knew that deep down, her friend was a nice person. The kind that would give up her life to protect the people she loved. She'd seen first hand how selfless Clarisse could be so she had decided to overlook her flaws. But boy, could she be unbearable sometimes.
"Hey, so about Oscar..."
"Don't even think about it. I don't need you to find me a boyfriend"
"Why not? I think you'll look good together. Since he's Hans friend we can also go on double dates and do stuff together"
"Thank you for the offer but I'm not interested"
"What if I order you to do it?"
Twila rolled her eyes in exasperation "Who are you to order me around?"
Clarisse sighed. Twila was right. Who was she to order anyone around? Aside from her name, she didn't know anything about herself. The orphanage where she grew up had no record of her. They didn't know when she arrived or how long she'd been there. Which was just weird and puzzling. They had a record of everyone, including Twila's but only hers were missing. Something else she couldn't understand? The way they kept forgetting of her existence. Unless she was standing in front of them, they didn't remember who she was. Their behavior made it hard for her to find out who her parents were and where she'd come from. If the people who raised her often forgot about her, where was she supposed to find clues of her origins?
"You're thinking about it again. Aren't you?"
"Can you read minds?"
"Forget about them Clarisse. If they abandoned you then it means they didn't want you. Stop trying to look for them"
"Easier said than done"
"Have you forgotten what happened to me? After years of searching what did I get?"
"Maybe..."
"Maybe they're different from my mother? What if they're worse? I don't want you to get hurt the way I did"
"Please, the person who's capable of hurting my feelings hasn't been born yet"
"What about Hans? Don't you love him? Sometimes love hurts"
"Love? I like the way he runs around all day trying to please me. But to say I love him would be an exaggeration"
"I am so glad I'm immune to your charms"
"What do you mean you're immune?" She turned to face her "No one can resist this..."
"Watch out!" Twila screamed seconds before their car bumped into something. Clarisse stepped on the brakes, praying whoever or whatever they hit was fine "Oh my God Clarisse, we killed someone" she said when the car came to a stop
"Don't jump into conclusions. Let me see if they're..."
"No!" Twila grabbed her hand "Let's go. It's just us. There... there's no one else on this road. If the person doesn't know who we are, they won't find us"
"What if they're not dead?"
"Are you kidding me? They literally flew into the air. Even if our car didn't hurt them, the fall definitely will. I could have sworn I heard bones breaking. Please let's just go. I don't want to spend the rest of my life in prison"
"I'm the driver. If you report it, they'll let you go"
"Stop trying to act like a..." A knock on their window had them letting out a blood curdling scream. Well, if anyone asked, only Twila screamed. Because she was the only one who was scared. Nothing could scare Clarisse. The woman asked them to pull down the window. She noticed that there was no blood on her and took it as a good sign.
"Yes, how can we help you?"
"You get points for not having a shaky voice human"
"Excuse me?"
"After hitting me with your car, were you ladies going to leave my body lying on the street like that?" The woman asked stretching. For some reason, Clarisse found that she loved the sound of her bones cracking.
"You... We... Shouldn't you be dead?" Twila stammered "You air into flew..."
"Sorry. She mixes words when she's angry or scared. What she means is how are you alive?"
"I practice Kung Fu so my reflexes are extraordinary. Listen, is there a bar anywhere near here? I badly need a drink"
"There is. But you know what's better? Free booze. We're going to a party and there will be plenty of it. Wanna come along?" Twila grabbed a handful of her t-shirt and pulled her to her side
"What are you doing? How could you invite a stranger we just hit with our car to Hans party?" she whispered
"What's wrong with that? At least she's not dead or injured" turning to the woman Clarisse asked "You don't happen to have any injuries. Do you?"
"As a matter of fact I do"
They both froze "You do?"
"Yes. My feelings are hurt. Open the door or I'll rip it off"
Clarisse obliged her but couldn't help adding "Around here, I give the orders. Not the other way around"
"You don't say"
"She's not joking" Twila interjected
"I hate being ordered around. Do it and I'll fucking rip your heads off. Now step on it human"
"It's Clarisse and my friend is Twila. What is your name?"
"Adrian"
"Nice to meet you Adriana"
"It's Adrian. The a at the end is silent"
Clarisse nodded, intrigued by the woman. She was beautiful and strong. Judging from her muscles, it seemed like she spent a lot of time at the gym lifting weights.Maybe she wasn't lying about practicing Kung Fu. All of a sudden, Clarisse wanted to befriend her. They were strangers but she felt some kind of connection between them. She couldn't explain where it had come from but it was there.
"So where do you live Adrian? What do you do? Are you married? What about your family?"
"Why do you care?" Twila snapped. She didn't like this Adrian woman and wanted them to go their separate ways as soon as possible.
"No reason. I'm just curious"
"Don't be. You should continue living your life peacefully human. Once we get at the party, you'll forget you ever met me. Both of you. Am I clear?"
"Why should we forget you? I like you and want to be friends with you"
"Not me. I don't need any more friends" Twila said just as they pulled up outside Hans house. The party was in full swing with students scattered all over the front yard. The loud music finally registered and she wondered why the neighbors hadn't called the police yet. Or maybe they had but they just hadn't arrived "Maybe we should go back home. I don't feel like partying anymore"
"That's fine. Let's swap our outfits. You can go back home and rest. I'll tell you everything tomorrow"
She stared at Clarisse in shock "You heartless bitch! We're supposed to be friends. If I don't feel like partying then you shouldn't either"
"I'm not the kind of person that's easily influenced by peer pressure. Come on. I hope the material of the dress is stretchy seeing as my chest is bigger than yours"
"I don't need you to remind me that!" She opened the door and stormed off. Clarisse looked back at Adrian and shrugged her shoulders.
"She's also moody"
Adrian smirked "Interesting. I've never met anyone like you"
"I will take that as a compliment. Does this mean we're friends?"
"In your dreams human" she also got out of the car. Left alone, Clarisse made sure her make-up was still okay then followed them. Most of the boys who were already tipsy told her how beautiful she was and how jealous they were of Hans. Some even suggested being her second boyfriend, claiming they didn't mind her dating other men. She was at the front door when Lars, one of Hans friends blocked her way.
"Hey beautiful, care for a drink?"
"Sure. With your bestie. Where's he?"
"Ah come on babe. You're breaking my heart" wrapping an arm around her shoulders, he asked "Am I not handsome?" before she could answer, a voice barked
"Hands off her!" It wasn't what he said but how he said it. Everyone around her froze. She spun around to see who had given the order and her eyes almost bulged out. Clarisse believed she'd never seen anyone so perfect, so- may the sisters at the orphanage forgive her for cursing- fucking hot. He pointed at Lars saying "You have three seconds to get your hands off her or you will lose them" immediately Lars took a step away from her, dropping his hand. Puzzled, she asked
"Who are you?"
"We'll talk later. For now, you're coming with me"
She was ready to jump into his arms but she had some dignity. There was no way she was going to let a man order her around. Even if he was drop dead gorgeous "No I'm not"
"I won't repeat myself" looking past her, he barked "Adrian, get your ass out here"
Hans chose that moment to show up "Oh hey babe. When did you arrive?" He bent down to kiss her but his lips never touched hers. Everyone watched in shock and horror as the intruder wrapped a hand around his neck and practically lifted him off the ground. Clarisse noticed two things. His speed and strength. He'd covered the space between them too fast and the way he was dangling Hans wasn't normal.
"Put the human down" Adrian said coming out of the house.
"He tried to kiss her"
"So what? It's their..." she trailed off looking at Clarisse, the man then back at her "No fucking way. Her?"

Reed dropped his hand before his wolf took over and finished the boy off. It hadn't been five minutes since he met her but the idiot was already possessive of her. Sometimes he envied humans for having complete control of their thoughts and feelings. His kind could be influenced by their other half, resulting in a struggle between man and beast. The one with the strongest will usually won. There were few cases where the man lost and had to be controlled by the wolf. Those wolves were known as feral wolves. He believed he'd conquered his wolf and that all the decision making was up to him. He decided when to relinquish control and when to take it back. When to eat, when to sleep, when to shift, what to feel, he had everything in check. Yet the moment they laid eyes on her, his wolf was ready forcefully come out.It was no secret werewolves were protective of their mates but they had already decided they
"Wake up, wake up Clarisse. Wake up" She grunted, pulling the sheets over her head. They were ripped away and Twila's loud voice almost rendered her deaf. Making it impossible for her to continue sleeping. Even if she wanted, she couldn't go back to the dream she was having. And what a shame because that gorgeous man was about to kiss her. She was really curious as to how his lips tasted. Prying her eyes open, she glared at a frantic Twila. "Did the world come to an end?" "No. Worse" "What could be worse than the world ending?" She plopped onto the bed. Only then did Clarisse notice the laptop she was carrying. If she was there to complain about her favorite idol getting married again, that day would be her last. It wasn't the first time Twila barged into her room screaming like a madwoman. It had be
"Anything?" Elliot shook his head. They'd been looking for signs or traces that would explain where they'd been that night but found absolutely nothing. It was as if whoever had wiped their memories made sure to cover all areas. The same with the King's assassination attempt. No leads, no clues. Nothing. A week later, Reed was convinced the witches had somehow gotten to him and forced him to kill the king. The problem was he couldn't figure out how and why they did that. What could they have said or done that made him listen? Threats? Maybe a wolf was involved. They'd wiped Adrian and Elliot's memory too. Which meant he was with them. Maybe they threatened to kill Adrian. It was the only threat that would work on him. She wasn't helpless. As an Alpha female, she was stronger than most wolves and could take care of herself. But if witches were involved, they could have inc
Reed stared at her and for the first time in his life, he found himself at a loss for words. It had been less than five minutes since he met his mate and the first thing he wanted to do was throttle her. Adrian was right. She really had no sense of self preservation. The fact that any of the intruders could easily kill her didn't seem to register in her brain. All they had to do was swipe their claws across her neck and she would be dead. But what was she doing? Asking for explanations while worrying about her damn carpet. He gave Elliot the signal before he forgot who the enemy was. He and Adrian moved in sync, jumping on two of the guys. Reed had a second to push her behind him before punching the guy who tried to grab her hand. He'd only landed another punch when from the corner of his eye he saw her moving forward.Angry that she was putting her life in danger, he dodged the claws directed at his chest, p
The house was more like the White House or what people would call a modern day castle. As they went around the driveway fountain, she nodded in approval. There had to be at least twenty bedrooms judging by the size. Clarisse had already adjusted herself mentally to living in a small place because she thought Reed's house wouldn't be as good as hers was. The only reason she went with them was so they could protect Twila. She'd gotten herself into trouble and while she was trying to find out why people were after her friend, she needed someone to look after her. Reed or Adrian could do it. For that reason alone, she had resigned herself to crashing in Adrian's bedroom or sleeping on the couch. The house in front her surpassed her imagination."Glad to know you're not poor" she commented leaning forward to take a better look. Perfect. A castle fit for a queen like her. If she'd come across it before he
Reed was drifting off when he heard her come in. He'd spent hours thinking of ways to shake her off. Luckily, she was a human so she wasn't bound by the mate bond. Which meant if he rejected her, he would be the only one who'd suffer. But wouldn't that be better than living with her for the rest of his life? He couldn't stand her. She took every chance she got to make him angry. He'd seen the way her eyes got all triumphant every time he reacted so he'd decided to ignore everything she said. However, deep down, he found that he liked the way she challenged him. The way she always managed to make him angry. He wanted to keep bickering with her. Maybe if he was lucky he'd get a reaction from her. She's like a tree. Emotionless. The words rang out in his head. Her friend had said she had no feelings. Did that mean she was apathetic? If so would rejection work on her? For the bond to be completely cut off, she had to say the word
"You still haven't told me where you went last night""According to Reed, I sleepwalked to his room""I didn't know you sleepwalk""It's the first time it's ever happened""You don't say. Turns out Miss perfect isn't so perfect"Clarisse smacked her lips loudly "At least I'm not a coward like someone I know""Better to be a coward than a psychotic bitch""How long have you been waiting to use that?""Don't you have things to do? People to frustrate?""Reed disappeared after breakfast and Adrian told me she was going for a run with some members. Why don't we take this chance to look around?" she was curious about the place and the secrets it held. Her inner realtor wanted to estimate how much it would cost if t
"I will never be with anyone who feels inferior to humans""How am I supposed to feel when she's been here for a day and already managed to get in your bed""I never took you for a stupid person Dane. One look at her and you'd know not to trust anything that comes out of her mouth. Are you that blinded by jealousy to the point where you can't see that she was only trying to get under your skin?""Are you saying nothing happened between you?""I'm saying nothing will ever happen between us" she started smiling but he wiped the victorious smile of her face by adding "I mean me and you. Get rid of your feelings for me and go find your mate. The sooner you leave the better""Are you kicking me out of the pack because of a human?""No. This is your home too. But if you attack them
They were only a few feet away when they heard a loud bang followed by two more. There was a tremor on the ground that felt like an earthquake as birds and other animals fled from the scene of the explosion. Stones, branches, and dirt flew in every direction while black smoke shot up. The building collapsed. The dungeon. She was still in the dungeon and probably... No. She couldn't be dead. Panic gripped his heart, making him rush forward. Toward the burning building. Golden flames and black smoke rose in the air. Someone grabbed his hand. Pulling him back. "No. Clarisse is in there. Clarisse, Clarisse, Clarisse..." Reed startled awake and turned his head to the side to make sure she was still there. "Why are you awake?" He asked rubbing his eyes "Another nightmare? You were calling my name in your sleep" "Alphas don't have nightmares" he grumbled pulling her into his arm
"You're awake" Pennington said touching his head. He slapped the hand away, sitting up "How are you feeling? I thought being surrounded by her scent might help you wake up faster" Reed stared at Pennington, his head fuzzy. It took him a moment to remember what had happened then he shot his eyes towards him "Where is she? Where's Clarisse?" "She left with her father" "No. That bastard is not her father. Where's Adrian? I'm going to strangle her for taking Clarisse there. Where is she?" Swinging his legs over the bed, he stood up only for a wave of dizziness to send his ass back down. "Take it easy. Whatever drug they gave you is pretty advanced. I've never seen anything like it" "How long have I been out?" "Two days" He eyes widened "Two days? Are you kidding me? Why didn't you wake me up?" "I would have done it if I knew how. Also, Adrian is out looking for the Luna. She h
"Darling princess, you're awake"Her eyes fluttered open, blinking a few times. The earthy scent mixed with chemicals and other scents she couldn't identify assaulted her nose. She crinkled her face, wondering where she was and why the king was so close to her face."Can you move back a little. You're making me uncomfortable""Interesting. I can see some resemblance between you and Ursula but none between us. How is that possible?" He asked straightening."Us?" She asked trying to remember what had happened. She'd saved Reed. He had offered to come with her but the king- no. Not the king. His brother who also happened to be her father. Yes. That's what he'd meant earlier. Maybe it was a good thing she didn't resemble him. Physically he was okay but other things like his personality, well. Clarisse was glad she hadn't inherited that. How did one go a
"Let's see. Turn around" she twirled, giggling excitedly "Beautiful. Where did you get it from?" "Does it matter?" If she told him her friends had made it for her, he'd only nod and ask her to introduce them to him. But if he found out who they were, he'd definitely go ballistic. Ursula thought that it was best to keep her witch friends a secret for now. It wasn't as if they'd always hate them. She believed a day would come when wolves would put their prejudices about witches aside and accept them. "No. Let's go or we'll be late" "Are you really taking me to the palace? You always said it wasn't a place for young silly girls like me" "How old are you now?" "Fifteen" "You're old enough. Before you find your mate, you should learn how to run a pack" "And they're giving lessons on how to do that at the palace?" H
Silver chains dug into his wrist, irritating the already open skin. Pain shot through his hands, spreading down to other parts of his body. His wolf was angry but too week to do anything. Reed concentrated on not moving so as not to worsen the wounds but it was hard because his hands were supporting his dangling body. A body that was battered and in dire need of water. Food was a luxury he didn't dare think about. He attributed his weakness to the poison he'd accidentally injested. Even though it had been neutralized, he hadn't had time to recover before they were attacked again. Although the second time, the rebels had gone there for him. They were like parasites. Cut off a head and another one grew in its place. He couldn't blame anyone but himself for the predicament her was in. Why he'd trusted a madman was beyond him. Indrik had swooped in, saved them, only to flee during the second attack. His e
"Didn't he die along with my mother?"He shook his head "I don't know. No one saw the bodies or attended the funeral" Clarisse gaped at him, not believing what he was saying."Are you guys stupid or what? How could you believe he was dead without seeing any evidence or their bodies?""Why would the king lie about his brother's death?""Oh my God, are you kidding me? People lie all the time. If he wasn't the king, he could have lied so he could ascend the throne. There are so many reasons""You don't get it. The king's word is law. If he walks in here and asks us to merge with the imperial pack, we do it without a question. Because he's the leader of all wolves""So you guys just follow him blindly?""We don't have a choice. Even though there are packs who don't agree with the way he rules, there's nothing they can do. That's
A minor broken statue in a overcast morass marked the entrance to the dungeon. Beyond the broken statue lay a scanty, dark room covered in dead vermin, and small bones. The torch allowed them to see the remnants of a pillaged burial chamber, pillaged and consumed by time itself. Further ahead there were three paths, they took the middle. Its twisted trail led past collapsed rooms and pillaged treasuries and soon they entered a clammy area. There was a round stone in the center, around it a dozen skeletons in a circle. Opal swallowed, knowing who the remains belonged to. They advanced carefully onwards, deeper into the dungeon's shadows, passing a few more rooms and passages, most of which looked just like the other. Eventually they made it to what was likely the final room. A large granite door blocked their path. Dried blood splatters were all over it, somehow untouched by time a
"Where is the rebel's hideout?""No one knows""What do you mean no one knows? So where did Reed go?" She wanted to pull her hair out. How could he have left without a word? She wasn't just anyone. If anything happened to him, she would be hurt the most. Why didn't he at least tell her he was leaving? Some mate he was. Would anyone blame her if she walked away from him? Keeping her in the dark was the most selfish thing he had ever done. When she had decided to stay with the witches, hadn't she called him so he wouldn't worry?Even though she was thinking of leaving, she still called him. And they hadn't been in a relationship then. Now that they were, he couldn't tell her he was leaving? She regretted coming up with that plan. She should have realized something was fishy when he told her to sit out the meeting. When he came back, they would have to start all ove
"Your highness, you're back. How was the trip? Did you have fun? Where's Adrian?""Out of my way before I punch you""Let me carry that for you" Eilie glared at him, making him fold his hands behind his back "Or not""Where's Reed? He should have been waiting for me at the entrance""Your mate is a busy man""Busy with what?""Aside from being an Alpha, he's also the king's man. Before you arrived, he was rarely in the pack""Are you saying I was holding him back from his duties?""No. I mean that he probably reverted back to his workaholic self when you were gone. Are you guys hungry? There's food in the kitchen""This nice act is creeping me out Laurent. Don't you, as the Beta, have things to do?""I'm trying to be nice but you don't appreciate it" he huffed, leaving. Cl
