She's driving me crazy.
The sad part was that she didn't even realize that her presence had my wolf begging and pleading like a pup. When she called me out in my office, I wanted to pull her close and kiss her senseless, until her legs turned to rubber.
Even the look Mr. Brown gave her—a polite smile—sent my nerves up my stiffened spine. My heel tapped against the carpeted floor of the conference room, while my fingertips drummed along the table to the same rhythm.
"In all," he said. "We're very happy with the progress that Alpha Inc. has given us at Brown's Rentals, and we would like to extend your services to our partner company Brown's Towing, LLC."
"We'd be happy to take on Brown's Towing, Mr. Brown. Let's schedule a time for our normal consolation and get things set up," I said, almost robotically. Brown was a huge client, but one of many for Alpha Inc.
He smiled underneath his bushy handlebar mustache. "I'll call the front desk and schedule myself in then, Mr. Reed. As always, it's such a pleasure working with you all."
Scott stood up to see him out, while my gaze drifted to Blaire. I'd informed her to type out our meeting in shorthand, like a stenographer, and report back to me when we finished.
By the smug look on her face, I figured she'd done well. I wasn't sure what would have happened if it hadn't. My wolf wouldn't let me fire her, or send her home, he'd dug a hole so deep from his pacing that I feared he'd fall in if I didn't act on the mating bond soon.
"She's human," I mumbled so low I knew she couldn’t hear it. "And my employee."
Kiss her, he demanded.
Blaire looked up, her hazel gaze twisting my insides with a smidge of mischief that would be the death of me. She was a free spirit, a flirt, and I hated it. A Luna was none of those things. A Luna needed to be stern, no nonsense, and Blaire Summers was nothing but nonsense.
"Reporting back to you, Sir," she said, sliding her laptop over toward me.
I glanced down, reading over her shorthand until I realized every time I spoke she inserted a Grinch emoji. I lifted my gaze toward hers, and found myself pressing my lips together so hard they hurt.
"Fix it," I said as calmly as I could.
Blaire chuckled, shoving her shoulder into mine, sending electric fire up my arm. "It's an easy fix. Take a joke, Mr. Reed," she said, rolling her eyes and standing.
I stood with her, looking down at her short frame, and the way she inclined her head to meet my eyes.
"Don't roll your eyes at me."
"Noted," she said in a soft voice that I could only take as passive aggressive sarcasm.
"Ms. Summers."
The front desk receptionist—whatever her name was—Scott hired her because she was pretty, and was done with her shortly after. Being younger than me, and not the alpha, the fact that he hadn't found his mate yet wasn't that big of a deal.
Blaire perked up at her name. "Yes?"
She looked nervous, her hands interlaced in front of her, her thumbs playing war with one another. "There is …" she cleared her throat. "A gentleman here to see you. He says it's important."
Kill him, my wolf said. Kill him now.
Blaire huffed, but gathered her things and followed her down to the front desk without a glance in my direction. I shoved my cell phone into my pocket, and stalked to my desk.
I had no right to follow her or eavesdrop on her conversation. She didn't understand mating, or werewolves. Plus, I didn't want to mark her, I wanted to protect her. That was two completely different routes to take concerning her.
I sat down at my desk, pulling up my email, and getting my lunch order ready for Blaire to go get when I felt it. It started deep down in my bones, weaving its way through my veins with an electric current.
Blaire spoke with someone and my wolf didn't like it.
I cracked my neck to the side, dismissing my wolf's ludicrous accusations when the feeling intensified, and my fingers curled into a heavy fist on my desk.
Get up and go stop her. She's flirting with a man, his said.
"I don't own her," I mumbled, rubbing my temples. "She's human, and doesn’t know—,"
Now! he shouted, jolting me forward for the first time since I was a pup. It'd been impossible to control him when I was younger, but as we grew, I became in control.
This is not me being in control. This is me being dragged around like a child in trouble.
"Stop it," I ground through my clenched teeth, digging my heels, in case he tried again. "She can speak to who she wants to—,"
"I had fun the other night. I must have put in your number wrong, because the text came back."
The voice was definitely male, though vague and not familiar; he spoke to my mate about having fun a previous night, which meant he wanted it again. My jaw hurt from clamping my teeth shut.
"Maybe we can go out tonight."
I stood up and my chair flew back toward the opposite wall. I wasn't sure if I controlled my actions—, which were hardly controlled at all—or my wolf, but I couldn’t listen to this.
My strides were wide, and quick out of my office, and into the hallway. I shoved past Scott on my way out, noting everyone stared at me with wide eyes, no one daring to ask me anything.
Even Stephanie kept her distance as I took the elevator down to the first floor, and followed her scent out onto the sidewalk. The man in front of her swallowed my expectations of a good-looking guy, and demolished my pride.
He was tall, big, and staring at my mate as if he wanted to eat her. Not that I couldn’t easily take him, he was human, but I didn't like this at all. In fact, ten different scenarios, starting with pushing him down a manhole, and dragging him through the foot traffic around us, all filtered through my thoughts.
Blaire shifted her weight from one foot to the other, and I sensed her unease. I stopped behind her, drawing this man's attention first. "Can we help you?" he asked.
Blaire turned around, her hazel gave lifted to mine, and curiosity traveled across her face. "Mr. Reed I was just coming back up—,"
"Blaire isn't to be bothered again, son," I said, knowing he was my age, but feeling I needed to knock him down anyway I could. "She's working now, and I don't appreciate her being pulled away for pettiness."
He swallowed, shoving his hands down into his pockets. His heartrate picked up, and I felt him grow irritated. He had no idea how irritated I felt at the moment, and if he knew what was good for him, he'd leave without an argument. Blaire never looked away, the corner of her mouth pulled into a small smirk.
She turned around to face this guy. "Sorry, Thomas. I should have told you. Luther and I are dating, and he's really protective."
What in the …
Thomas grew pissed quickly. "I just stayed the night with you two nights ago, Blaire. Does he know that?"
Kill him, my wolf said. There is a dumpster out back where you can dump him.
Blaire crossed her arms over her chest. "What happened before I met Luther is none of his business. Now, you heard the man, I need to get back to work—,"
"You're screwing your boss?" he asked, his voice louder than I felt comfortable with since we stood outside of my place of business.
"I suggest you move along before I do it for you," I said.
Thomas' eyes narrowed to slits. "My dad is a lawyer, Blaire. Is your new boss sexually harassing you?"
Blaire chuckled deeply, but I was too pissed to take her lead. I stepped between the two of them, my resolve shattering into tiny pieces. "Let me get this straight," I said, my voice low. "You're accusing me of sexually assaulting my employee; yet, you show up to her job unannounced and pull her from her first day on the job? Maybe we should check your background, because I fear we may find a few restraining orders in there."Thomas let out a long breath. "Says her boss that's currently dating her. Right. I'm in the wrong here—,"
"Brother," Scott's clipped voice came from the doors of the building.
I glanced over my shoulder, but I didn't move. This little punk wasn't going to accuse me of sexually assaulting my mate and get away with it. "Leave, and don't come back, or I'll make you regret it."
Against everything in my body, I turned on my heel and marched toward Scott, who held the door opened for me. When I made it halfway there, I glanced back to see Blaire staring after me. "Get inside," I hissed.
To my surprise, she scurried in before me, making a quick beeline toward the stairs. Her footsteps quickened as I gained on her. She shoved opened the stairwell doors, and made it to the first platform when I gripped her elbow and pinned her against the wall.
"What. Was. That?" I asked.
Her minty breath escaped her opened mouth, and she looked nervous for the first time since I hired her.
"You just told that stranger that we're dating? What possessed you to do that, Blaire?"
Her gaze dropped to my mouth, everything about her quietened, and she seemed almost … submissive. "I thought it would make him leave, Luther. He looked up jobs hiring assistants in the area, and went by a few until he found me. It was creepy. I thought if I told him he would back off. I didn't know you would go all Jean-Claude Van Damme—,"
"Don't ever do that again," I said. "Do you understand? This is my business—my world—and if his lawyer father gets pissed enough, he could ruin me. I am not dating you. Understand?"
Blaire tugged her grasp from me, lifting her head in a defiant way. "Obviously. Who would want to date The Office Grump? Not this girl," she said, taking a few steps up until she was my height. "Plus, you wouldn't know what to do with me."
She swayed her hips up the stairs, leaving me with a howling wolf and the urge to bring her back down to the lone stairwell and have her every which way.
Blaire sat at her desk when I finally got back to my office. I'd taken the long way to allow myself time to cool down from being inches away from her luscious mouth.
She looked over from her laptop, a pen caught between her teeth while she leaned back and glared at me.
I ignored her infuriating stare, taking a seat and listening to a few of my voicemails, while sending Blaire notes on my schedule.
After several minutes of utter silence she asked, "I should have asked before. Are you married? It was rude of me to assume you weren't. I mean, I can't imagine the woman that could put up with your brooding, but that's none of my business. So," she asked, "Are you?"
My God, … she's annoying.
She's curious for herself, my wolf said.
"No, she isn't," I said.
"What was that?" she asked.
"I’m not married."
"Dating?"
"No."
She spun back and forth in her chair. "I'm just trying to get to know you, since you're wound up pretty tight over there."
I ignored her stare. "I've sent you emails. Work them."
She made a face, but quickly flew through her emails, and turned back to me, her elbow braced against her desk. "I'm more of a casual dater myself. I don't really take guys too seriously, because they're mostly playboys anyway."
My wolf didn’t want to hear about her dating, and his anxiety coursed through me. I turned from my screen and began writing down notes for the Brown's Towing I'd searched online.
"Oh, what about that girl. The redhead. She's pretty."
My gaze snapped up. "What are you talking about?"
She shrugged. "She was ogling you, and giving me dirty looks. I think she likes you. What was her name? Stephanie. Why don't you ask her out?"
The pen in my hand snapped in two, splattering ink all over my white button-down. I jumped up, shaking out of my jacket, and un-buttoning my shirt until I tugged out of it.
Blaire became quiet, her gaze lingered on the lines of my chest as I grabbed a spare shirt folded in the bottom drawer of my desk.
This was the first time she'd been this quiet. When I glanced up at her, red tinted her cheeks, but she looked down at her laptop as if she hadn't been staring.
My office door opened, and Stephanie walked inside. Her mouth parted slightly, but she hid her gazing much more than Blaire had. "Um," she cleared her throat. "Mr. Brown set up his appointment for next Thursday at 2PM. I just wanted to make sure you received it."
"I did. Thank you."
She glanced over at Blaire who continued to type on her keyboard until she shut the door.
Blaire chuckled. "See, she was totally eyeing you. You should ask her out. It may relieve some of that tension gathered in your shoulders."Biting my tongue wasn't working anymore. I buttoned the last button and stared at her. "So because she looked at me, I need to ask her out?"
Blaire smiled. "Why not?"
"Does that mean I should ask you out, too? Because I saw you looking as well."
"I looked for research purposes," she concluded. "Plus, when a man takes off his shirt, you just look. It's natural."
Unable to stop myself—I laughed. It felt foreign and light, something that hadn't happened in months. "I see."
"What happened to your pen anyway? What are you The Hulk?"
Not quite.
"I've written down my lunch order for you, order whatever you like, the restaurant is right across the street, and they deliver to me several times a week. They know how I like my steak."
She opened the email and glared. "You just eat a steak? No salad or side dish?"
Being a wolf, I didn't crave anything but meat—mostly.
"Order it," I said.
Blaire mumbled something to herself, and thirty minutes later, Trent brought in our food. I tipped him, and dug out my plate, opening it to see lettuce … a salad with my steak.
"What is this?" I barked.
Blaire hid a smile, and snatched her sirloin salad from the bag. "I don't know how that got in there. Better eat it. It's good for you."
I balled my fists on my desk. "You don't determine what's good for me—I do."
Blaire sat down, turned toward me, and crossed her legs. "Yeah? I think I may have a few good ideas that would be good for you, Luther Reed. Maybe you should keep me around and find out."
"That's your boss, Blaire?" Alicia, my best friend, asked from my bed. She stared at my phone, while resting on her belly with her feet in the air. "This is one drop-dead luscious male, Blaire Summers. I'm totally jelly right now." I turned around to face her, leaning back against my vanity table and folding my arms over my chest. The midnight black dress I wore hit my knees, but flattered my shape, and showcased my shapely legs. The nightclub we planned to go to was upscale, but I'd been there so many times they knew me by name. Alicia wasn't as brazen as I was with men—or flirty—but she loved to go dance and let loose after a long week working at the district attorney's office. "I know, Alicia, but he is one stick in the mud, and you know those types drive me up the wall." Alicia swung her legs from my bed and handed my phone back to me. "Yeah, but I'd let him do a lot of things to me against a wall, Blaire. Tell me he's single?" I nodded. "He's single—so he says—which makes sen
My wolf's chuckle vibrated deep inside of me, pushing me further onto the line that separated my irrational and rational thoughts. This was my club—I was the owner—and cornering a woman in the privacy of the women's bathroom wasn't rational. No—and neither was the thoughts my wolf forced fed my mind at the moment. That smug look on her face, the shape of that dress, and the ungodly way her dancing with another man made me feel, all crashed down on me at once, snapping my ability to stop myself. Now I was in trouble. I'd locked the bathroom door, barricading myself in a small space with the woman I'm destined to spend my life with. Even if I didn't want her—I wanted her. "Blaire. Blaire. Blaire. You're going to be a problem aren't you?" The pulse in Blaire's neck throbbed to a quick beat, showcasing her nerves when they didn't show on her face. "I don't see a problem," she said nonchalantly. "If you ignore the fact that you're in the girl's bathroom that is." I stood a foot in fr
I slid into the booth at the bakery across the street and sipped my iced coffee. It'd been a long week with Luther, and his agonizing stare. For someone that thought our kiss was a mistake, he sure got riled up over nothing. His temper tiptoed on the border of obsessive, in fact, his entire personality screamed possessive and … alpha. I knew he was in charge, and probably didn't enjoy my smart mouth or my sarcasm, but he did care about what I did and I wasn't entirely sure why? It went beyond my position as his assistant. He wanted to control me, and my life, and it screamed, controlling older boyfriend, but … I felt it was for a different reason, I just didn't know why yet. I sucked to the bottom of my coffee, and peeled the paper off my cupcake, taking a big unladylike bite of it. After our kiss, that was a completely different story in itself, because I'd never been kissed like that before. Every fiber in my body yearned for him after he stormed out of the bathroom as if my body
Scotch had become my best friend, ever since Blaire stumbled into my office that day. I'd been on an emotional roller coaster from the moment I met my mate. I knew having a mate wasn’t what it was cracked up to be. That's why I went thirty plus years without looking for her. She was infuriating. Her dark hair tempted me from the opposite side of the plane where she doodled on a notepad, and hummed along to some song in her head. I loved the length, and how the soft waves cascaded down her shoulder, while she bit her lip. I replayed her kiss in my mind so many times it felt permanently engrained in my brain waves. I tossed back the rest of the amber liquor in my glass, the ice rattling as I sat it down in my cup holder, and leaned back to cradle my head. It had been a mistake to ask Blaire to come, I knew better, but when she tried to force Stephanie on me, I couldn't help but to counteract. That was my problem. I was the alpha, and I hated her disobedience. I loathed it. My wolf
The look on Luther's face when I told him about my dream scared me. It wasn't what I expected. As an adult, you assume a nightmare wouldn't scare another adult, but this one turned his face ashen. His wide shoulders tensed, and his blue eyes turned that dark color I'd noticed in his office. "He stood on two legs?" he asked. I swiped the sweat that had gathered from my hairline with the back of my hand. "Yeah, I know it's weird. I need to get myself a glass of water. I'll be right—, "Luther stood up. "I'll get it." He marched over toward the mini-fridge and snagged a bottle. "Here," he said, sitting back down. I noticed that he didn't have a shirt on, and my cheeks burned hot at the sight. He looked even sexier being that it was night, and his eyes were hooded from sleep. "What else happened in the dream?" I unscrewed the cap and stared at him. He seemed very interested in my dream. I sucked down half the bottle and sat it on the nightstand. "I don't know, Luther, it's just a dream.
She laid with her back toward me, curled into a ball and I sensed every time she thought about our night, every time a rush of adrenaline coursed through her. I knew she wasn't asleep, but I couldn’t say I knew, because it would confuse her. Everything in the upcoming weeks would confuse Blaire. Go join her, my wolf coaxed. I rolled my eyes and placed my forearm over my eyes in an attempt to drown myself of all emotion. Everything about the night replayed in my mind like a never-ending slideshow. Her soft touch made my body purr, and it scared me. No woman had ever done that to me. I pressed my eyes closed tightly; praying for sleep, but it never came. I knew a mate bond was strong, but nothing prepared me for this. When sunlight hit the window the next morning, I was up and making coffee in the small kitchen. Blaire was half-asleep; her mouth opened slightly, one arm hanging off the bed. I wanted to join her, kiss and bite every square inch of her body until she begged me to stop
Alicia: Where did you go? Come back and drink with me? Both of the guys left. No one wants to have fun tonight. I shoved my phone back into the depths of my pocket and ignored Alicia's rant. I loved the girl, but there was more to life than drinking and partying every weekend. I'd spent my afternoon paying my landlord back rent, and eating Ben and Jerry's while being depressed that over half of my check was gone. At least I had somewhere to be depressed. Then Alicia showed up with Jory, and Axel to make matters worse. I told her I wasn't in the mood, but being Alicia, she persuaded me to let them in for a while. Which made me uncomfortable. The way Axel stared at me made my spine stiffen, and I was a laidback person. If someone made me uncomfortable, they were freaking weird. What were the chances of Jory hitting it off with Alicia of all people, and Axel tagging along? It was conspicuous, and I had no one to call but Luther, who showed up within minutes with his fury in tow. "Tha
"Control yourself," I hissed to my wolf. He'd become nearly incontrollable when Blaire followed me into my bedroom. The simple scent of her skin had me undone. I'd told her the truth because I knew she wouldn't move across the hallway if I didn't. Besides pissing herself, she took it—okay-ish. I wasn't sure if this was a façade yet, and she waited for me to turn my head so she could run for it. She knew she wouldn't make it far. Blaire stopped at the bathroom door, her gaze transfixed on my lavish bathroom with the overhanging showerhead and expensive granite countertops. I slipped up behind her, skimming my hot mouth against the smooth path of her neck. "I never knew a mate would make me feel like this?" Blaire chuckled, clutching the granite countertop in front of her, our gazes locked in the mirror. "You didn't look for me?" I didn't want to put my foot in my mouth, but she deserved the truth. I gripped her hips and lifted her to the cabinet. "Honestly, no. I didn't want a we
Blaire slipped into a short summer dress that made my wolf go crazy, as if we hadn't been in the shower until the water turned cold. No, I said to him. We have to save my brother. He's your brother not mine, he said. Bastard. Blaire untucked her hair from the back of her dress, and glanced over at me. "Look, I know you're pissed, but I didn't know he would be there." Sliding my fingers into my wet hair, I sighed. The truth was I secretly felt proud that Blaire had stood up to Zane. Even though it was one more problem to add to my list. "Blaire," I said, stepping in front of her, bracing my palms against her shoulders. "It's over with. There is nothing we can do now. Zane is known for his drastic measures to prove a point. I don’t believe for one second that he won't show up here. He will. But you'll be with me. I'm going to have you miles away from the kingdom, but close enough to me that I won't worry. Some of the wolves will stay behind to protect you while we get Marcus a
It felt surreal sitting across from the woman that I thought was my mother. She looked older in the face, but everything else seemed as if I'd been tossed back into time. As if I'd never been taken back to the apartment building, or put into foster care.Aunt Caterina looked happy to be away from the lycan kingdom, but ultimately fear rested in her eyes, which scared me. We'd just beaten the dragon king, and now we're facing off with a lycan king that we knew nothing about."You look tired," I said, standing up after we'd finished our Chinese food. She'd nearly eaten her entire takeout plate and the sight of her so hungry made my stomach twist. "I don't know if the cable is still turned on but—,""It is," Luther said from his spot across the room. He'd finished eating way before us, his elbows rested against his knees, his hands interlaced in front of him.I smiled to myself. I didn't know why Luther kept my apartment for me, maybe out of pity, or in case I ever got pissed and wanted
"Could you be any louder?" I asked over my shoulder to Axel. He crunched on every leaf in the woods surrounding the lycan kingdom. "Am I not being stealthy enough for you, Luther?" he asked in a sarcastic voice. "I'm so very sorry. I'm only sticking my neck out for you … again. Excuse me—," "You both shut up," Marcus hissed, crouching down suddenly. The lights of the kingdom were near, and I wasn't sure sending Axel up to the door was a good idea or not. We used a small storage shed on the outskirts of the property as coverage. "There are lycans guarding the front door." Marcus looked over. "Are you sure this is a good idea, Luther?" "No," I said honestly. "But they will be more willing to help another lycan than some wolves." Axel nodded. "I've got this taken care of. I'm personable, and everyone loves me." Marcus rolled his eyes, while I fought the same urge to strangle him. "Okay." Axel stood up and walked out into the clearing of the driveway leading up to the gate. The tw
Jessica slurped a noodle into her mouth and grinned at me from across the table. It was a nice contrast from the utter silence we'd had for the past hour. The tension was so thick I could taste it.Luther tapped the tip of his index finger against the table, his knee bouncing against mine. "So, this steak is to die for," I said, taking a long bite, and eyeing Barbie down the way.She winked at me. "Thank you, Blaire."Another five minutes of silence occurred, and I sighed. "How about that weather?"Luther cursed beneath his breath. "Stop it, please," he begged. "Can we talk about what Marcus and Axel planned out for the lycan kingdom?"Marcus leaned forward, and pushed his plate away. "We mapped it out, and Axel knows a way inside without signaling any guards. We're ready now."They were leaving soon. I understood the urgency in Marcus' voice, and the plea on his face. He needed closure or answers, whichever would come from their trip. But my stomach ached at the thought of being away
I left Blaire at the kitchen island eating, while I stepped outside onto the porch. I'd sensed Marcus arrive moments before, and by the worried look on his face, I figured he found something I needed to hear about. He ran his fingers into his blonde hair, and I watched the scar across his face move with his facial expressions. He looked tired, considering he'd been worried about finding her mate, and getting into the lycan kingdom."What is it?" I finally asked, leaning against the railing of the porch.Marcus stood in the yard, feet away from me. "Hex called me because you haven't answered your phone."I reached in my pocket, and realized I didn't have it. "I must have dropped it somewhere. I haven't seen it since before the fight. Did he say what he needed?"He shrugged. "Not really. He said he needs you to call him back. It's important."I glanced over my shoulder and into the house through the screen door. Blaire was swinging her feet on the barstool, eating though I knew she was
My mouth still hung opened when Luther collided with Alaric. The vibration of their bodies hitting each other shattered my eardrums.I pressed my face into the tops of my knees, and braced for impact as the tree shuttered beneath me. Everything that happened over the last few nights circled in my head like a tornado. This had become a complete cock-up. A complete and utter nightmare. Seeing Luther's face in Alaric's room made tears pool in my eyes. I thought Alaric would kill him, and make me watch. At least now, he was free—sort of.Besides the bloody battle unfolding in front of me, that is.Luther slid beneath Alaric as he jumped up, his wings lifting him feet above the ground, and Luther turned around and kicked him in the back of his left knee. Alaric roared, a stream of fire blasted from his mouth, lighting the tree next to me on fire.Where is Smoky the Bear when you need him?The hellhounds barking—more like roaring—neared, and I clung to the trunk of the tree to keep from fal
Break the bars and kill him, my wolf growled. There was nothing I wanted more than to bend the bars, slip between them, and slit Alaric's throat. The battle had been monstrous, but we took out half of their dragons before they gathered themselves to fight back.It was an ambush at its finest. Except I never fought Alaric. Apparently, when we were storming the castle, he was dream hoping to Blaire, and now she was tossed over his shoulder like a ragdoll. Her t-shirt was bunched around her waist, her panties showing from being plucked from our bed. My fingertips tightened around the bars, and I felt myself growing numb.My ears rang as Alaric began to speak, I had no idea what he said other than being executed. And then Blaire's hazel eyes brimmed with tears, and she tried to run to me.His hands on her made my wolf howl in pain. The very thought of him touching her made my skin crawl, and to see him do it, pierced my heart. "I love you," I said, for the first time out loud.It was unsp
Seeing Luther run into the distance broke my heart. Not knowing if he'd make it back in one piece, or at all, crushed every part of me that yearned for him.Every part that felt connected to him.I couldn’t stand in the window any longer, so I walked down the stairs to the family room where Jessica and Barbie sat on the couch. Selena stood by the front window, staring out the glass, her fingers twitching nervously against her side.Barbie looked up at me, and patted the seat next to her. "Come have a sit, Blaire. We're going to watch some movies and drink wine. It'll take our mind off things."Selene scoffed from the window, and turned around to look at Barbie. "Speak for yourself, Mother.""Don't. Start," she said back. "We're all worried about the boys. You're not the only one."Blaire brought her knees up to her chin, and wrapped her arms around them. "When is the last time the pack has fought?'"We fight off rogue wolves and lycans occasionally, but we haven't had a war in ages. I
I spent most of the night staring at Blaire as she tossed and turned in her sleep. No dreams came to her, but she seemed restless. I traced my fingertips down her back, leaving an openmouthed kiss against the end of her spine before getting up the next morning. The pack house was quiet due to the early morning, but I relaxed knowing I wouldn't be bothered for another hour or so. I jogged downstairs and started a cup of coffee, out of habit more than necessity. The early morning sun peeked over the distant trees, casting a pinkish glow over the backyard, but I couldn't enjoy it as I wanted. The torment swirling inside of me hammered hard against my head. I'd taken out my frustrations on Blaire the night before. My wolf took control, wanting to punish her for even considering going to the dragon. But I knew the truth. He was scared. Scared of what the dragon would say to sway her opinion. I leaned my palms against the sink while my coffee made and listened hard for the beat of her he
