The Alpha's Death
"I need to get the bottle first, Jas," I muttered in a hopeless tone. "That was the reason why I did not fly back to New York City with my mum." "A bottle?" Jasper muttered while digging into his brain about what it was for. "You mean, the bottle that I gave you the other day?" he even made it clear. Fresh from his memories. Then I dropped my very disappointed body on Jasper's bed and locked my stare on the ceiling, thinking about backing out from our three-day vacation before the pain, discouragement, and disappointment go deeper. "Come on, Nathalie. It's just a bottle. Don't ruin your day just because of that fucking bottle." Jasper added. This time, the tone of his voice ascended and sharpened. He then moved out of the bed and slide closer to the window to get some fresh air. With the immediate silence, he was showing, I assumed his mood has already changed like mine. "It's not just about the bottle, Jas. There's a letter in it. And it so happened that I replied to the letter. Even followed the instruction written on it." I was supposed not to tell him about it but I left no choice. "So, you came back to this place, expecting you'd get something in return?" His response was absolutely correct. There is no other reason aside from that. To my surprise, Jasper suddenly burst out laughing. I don't know what it was about but I guess it has something to do with the bottle. I mean what could else be? Even myself could laugh at the joke about the letter until I saw it myself. I'm just too kind to hear out someone's grievances. Even believed that it truly existed. After bursting his laugh, Jasper then slide back to the bed and jumped on beside me. "That was too ridiculous, Nathalie. You'd be the craziest half-werewolf, half-human living on earth if you believe that kind of scenario." he then rubbed my hair shortly. "So what does the letter say? Was it a love letter?" "I'm serious, Jas." I removed his hands from my hair after being irritated. "I believe the owner of the letter was a person. A man. Somewhere out there in the nearby small islands. And his life right now was extremely devastating." "Okay. Worst-case scenario. Let's just say, that man truly existed. And the bottle has come to arrive on your doorstep. What will you do then? Don't tell me you will keep having this conversation with him? Through sending a letter in a bottle?" Jasper inhaled deeply. And I followed next to him with the fact that he was right. That kind of communication was outrageous. Absurd. And unrealistic. But it so happened that I somehow believed in several "What-ifs". "Nathalie, are you even listening to yourself? You already have hundreds of suitors including me which I know will never happen, by the way, even in my next life. What are you still looking for in a man?" "You knew that it's not just about that, Jasper. Of all the people who would believe me was you. But I was mistaken." Because I could barely bear the discomfort, I jumped out of the bed and rushed to the seashore. Jasper did not follow me to the seashore. I know he doesn't want the arguments to extend further so he simply let me have much time I needed to cool down and think things through. But his decision does not affect what I believed in. Because I believed Joshua existed. And with regards to Jasper's question about what should I do about it, even if I have to search for him all over the world, then so be it. "Umm... Excuse, me, my Lady?" An old man, carrying a bag of garbage appeared behind my back. "You're not allowed to enter the beach in the meantime as instructed by the management." I quickly wiped the tears from my eyes before I turned around and said, "I know. And I'm sorry uncle. Umm... Do you mind if ask you a question?" then I dropped my gaze to those collections of garbage he was carrying behind him. "Of course, my Lady. As long it will not hurt my feelings. Please, throw your question whatever that is." The old man chuckled. He then dropped those black garbage bags he was carrying to the ground and heaved a prolonged sigh. "Umm... Do you know someone who owns a boat? I mean I wanted to rent a boat for island hopping." I've been thinking about that before Jasper and I reached the beach. The old man suddenly dragged his gaze somewhere far away heading to the deep wide blue ocean in front of us. He even zoomed in the glimpse of his eyes when they intended to close and wrinkled shortly. "I might know someone but I've heard it's not for rent." The old man continued watching the ocean. And my expression suddenly brightened with the good news. As far as my wallet is concerned, I brought enough dough to make things possible. Even if Jasper always disagreed with my childish decisions, he can't stand me. I know, in the end, he will always be on my side. "However, his boat got completely wrecked off and turned into a scrap after the typhoon struck last week," he added that once again saddened by my expression. Even if I will pay for the boat to get fixed, the fixation will probably take a week or two. Nevertheless, I don't have that long to wait. I might have lost my interest to help Joshua if I waited that long. "Anyway, I have to send these bottles to the shop. They're money already. And every penny counts for me." The old man then lifted the three large black garbage bags. "Bottles?" I muttered. "Yes. I got these bottles after cleaning the ocean. Some of them were already brought to the shop. A cent per bottle was all worth it." The man was about to turn around but I immediately stopped him from stepping his foot forward and pays for the bottles instead. A few minutes later, Jasper and I ended up in one room full of empty bottles. Based on my first assumption, there might be around three hundred empty bottles of mixed plastics and glasses in the three garbage bags combined. "Don't give me that kind of face, Jasper. I already knew that I'm a fool. So, what?" I smiled at him to lift his mood. "If we could not find the letter in one of these bottles, there is still more in the shop." "For God's sake, Nathalie. You're dragging me into your craziness." Jasper wagged his head sideways as he left no choice. Then we started checking all the empty bottles in the room. No more talking. Just our eyes being focused on those bottles. After almost an hour of checking the three large black garbage bags, we found a piece of paper is not just one of the bottles, but a hundred of them. They were of the same quality and the same handwriting. "See? I told you the person who sent the letter was real." I eagerly announced while wrapping up all the letters in one place. "Yeah. Joshua is real. But I'm not gonna help you reading those boring letters. I mean... Who on earth could have done those letters, especially from a guy? Maybe he's not the man you think he is." "So, you were saying he was gay?" I asked back. "Those words are not from me. You said it yourself. I mean... There's no man in this world who loves writing letters anymore. Nathalie, we are already in a high-tech world." We then put the empty bottles back in the garbage bags and set them outside. "That is why I wanted to know and see the person better. You said it yourself. He was the only man who write letters these days. And that was the kind of a man I've been looking for all this time. To be my boyfriend and to be my mate." Jasper agape. I know he wanted me to be his girlfriend but friendship is all I could give him. Nothing more, nothing less. Later that night, a tiny lit-up lamp illuminated the room as I solemnly started reading the letters in chronological order. Every piece of the letter has a date. There were hundreds of them. If Joshua wrote them on a daily basis, it simply means that he's been writing these letters for almost a year now. Or more than that since there will still be a few bottles at the junkshop. As expected about those letters, he keeps writing about his experiences but most of them were disastrous, crying outs, and the feeling that he wanted to disappear, similar to the letter I've read last night. Jasper, on the other hand, chose not to join me at the table. Instead, he decided to sleep when he could gain nothing out of reading those letters with me. However, I could not find the letter that could be linked to my response to yesterday's letter. So, instead of searching for it, I wrote a new letter for Joshua. This time, I jotted down every piece of information about me. Complete name, address, and contact details. I also included in the letter about me wanting to see him sooner or later. In that way, my heart and mind would feel at ease. And for me to be able to help him with his problem. The next morning, I immediately rushed to the seashore and throws the bottle into the seawater. Jasper was still in his profound sleep so I did not wake him up. As I was watching the bottle being dragged by the sea current, my phone suddenly rings. When I checked it out, it was from my mum. "Mum? I thought we agreed that I'd be back in New York City in three days?" I shortly chuckled. "And if you're calling because dad misses me, please tell him to hold it until the third day..." "Nathalie," based on the voice from the other line, mum was sobbing. A few seconds later she burst out crying. "Mum... What's going on?" I let go of my glimpse from the bottle and focused on the phone. "Your dad... He's gone." Those were the last clear words that came out of mum's mouth. Aside from that, every sound that I could hear was whimpering. And my hands let go of the phone and dropped to the white sands. My arms and legs were shaking accompanied by the tears that voluntarily dripped to my cheeks. The Next Alpha "What?" I muttered to myself, thinking the phone was still leaning against my left ear. But when I realized it dropped to the ground, I simply stared at it ad though my body wasn't responding at all. My entire thought got wiped out of my brain, leaving the unexpected and terrible news mum brought me. Did not even get the chance to glimpse at the bottle I threw into the ocean. And I started to feel regret for being such a hard-headed type of a wolf. I was supposed to fly with my mum back to New York City, but I refused, believing my nonsense and the childish game will come into reality. Nevertheless, with the sudden news, the pack badly needs me since dad already entrusted me with his alpha badge as soon as I reach eighteen. Giving me the sole position to lead a thousand members of our pack. I'm not ready yet to become the Alpha of our pack. Don't even have enough experience in the battleground. Needless to say, my wolf was still unprepared to do the
The Invitation "Rogues?" I muttered to myself and leaned my back on the bed, staring at the ceiling in utter silence. Dad died because of the rogues. Does this mean Joshua was also a wolf? How did he know about rogues? And where is his place exactly? A few unanswered questions have been running through my mind at that time. Instead of mourning my dad's death, I focused my attention on Jushua's letters. And the thought not only filled my empty brain but made me feel curious about him as well. If he was a wolf like me, for me, there will be a huge possibility that I can mate him, if given the chance. So, I grabbed a piece of paper from my wooden drawer and began jotting down my response to his letter dated June 1, 2020. The letter has been two years behind already. However, I still wanted to respond to his letter. Right after replying to his letter, I went out of the room to ask our manservant for a piece of an empty bottle. After putting the letter insid
My Little Journey "Let me ask you this first, son. Will she be worth it?" Papa's facial expression and tone even become too momentous. "I mean... New York City was miles away from here. We don't know what lies ahead of you when you get there. And besides, she was still a stranger to you. And so is you to her." I'm not sure about how far my distance between me and Nathalie was, considering I haven't experienced leaving the island since the day I was born. But I don't care about the distance. It's just numbers. One thing is for certain, never have I ever felt to be that eager and excited to meet someone. And she was the first half-human and half-wolf who tried to communicate with me without judgement. Needless to say, the kind of communication we have. A letter sending in a bottle. "She's worth a try, Paps. I'm losing nothing if I try, right?" I shortly heaved a sigh and smiled at them positively. "And besides, she was the first wolf in my entire life who accepted m
Behind Bars Compared to mine, I was only wearing a tiny piece of loincloth that covers my genital parts, and at least partially the buttocks. Also, the man had no other accessories hanging on his body. I have these wooden and shell-made bracelets in my arms and ankles. Aside from that, the old man was holding a black metallic thing with its tip pointed at me. I'm not sure what it was for. But the one thing is for certain, it doesn't do good to my wolf. Nonetheless, my wolf immediately recognized what was inside the black metallic thing. Something made up of silver. One of the wolf's weaknesses. If that tiny bar made up of silver penetrates my body, it will slow down my werewolf abilities or worse will cause me death. "Kneel and put your hands behind your head!" then he suddenly cocked the black metallic thing. The man's face was furious in his mode. I don't want to cause trouble as Papa advised me. So, I gently dropped the bottle, the piece of Nathalie's photo
Full Moon "Whatever my business here in New York City is none of your business. So, better shut your mouth if you don't want me to cut off your..." I was supposed to say to cut off his throat but then I remembered Papa's advice. Even if I kept on thinking and following Papa's advice, could not help but feel indignant toward the first two humans I've encountered. I expected humans are welcoming. That they could help me find Nathalie as soon as possible, especially when her eighteenth birthday is fast approaching. However, the thought was a huge mistake. Papa was right about them. Humans can't be trusted. And that was my first lesson upon encountering one. "Fine. But, just so you know, there's no chance you'd be out of this place sooner. The cops these days are no longer fair and just. They locked up everyone who they think did something against the law. I'm purely innocent. But they blamed me for stealing." says the man before he dropped his butt on the cold and d
The Search "No!" I exclaimed. "My papa gave me those gold bars to use to see Nathalie. And where's the letter? Give it back to me." Out of too much anger, I tried to bend the metal bars, making a small passage, enough that my entire body fits. Being inside the cell was a waste of time. I don't even know why are they still holding me considering I did nothing to them. However, my Papa's advice has kept on bothering my clean conscience. If I'm gonna forced to escape from the cell, it might cause me trouble upon seeing Nathalie. Or worse, there might be no chance for me to attend on her birthday. "I'm so sorry, kiddo. The pouch of gold was a piece of dominant evidence that you stole them from someone. And as the law enforcer, I decided to proceed with the case against you." The policeman said. "I didn't steal those gold bars. I swear. Papa gave them to me to use here in New York City. Please, let me go. I need to see Nathalie as soon as possible." I insisted.
The Search Part 2 "Based on our profound investigation, fingerprints, facial recognition, and other forensic pieces of evidence made, the man has no civilian records. No debit or credit cards under his name either. No CCTV footage recorded for the past few months." "The man's name was Joshua," Jasper said back before he handed over the photo to me, letting me study it for a few seconds. But I was more focused on Joshua's letter for me. And it stated; "Dear Gorgeous Nathalie; Thank you so much for the invitation. The thing is, if you were able to read this letter, it simply means I safely arrived in New York City. The funniest thing there is, that I have traveled two nights and three days with the enthusiasm for the possibility of joining you on your birthday for the very first time. However, I brought no present for your birthday aside from myself because I don't know what are those things you hate or like. I hope you can forgive me for that. By t
Endless Chasing "All right. We'll leave you guys to it then." one of the cops said back, "but if given the chance you guys have seen this man, don't hesitate to reach out to us. The entire NYPD already had their eyes on the monster. He's too dangerous to the public and considered a fugitive." The three cops bent half of their bodies to us before they finally disappeared from their spots. Jasper then dragged me back to the main house as it was already late. As soon as we got back to the hallway, some of the pack's members have already cleared out of the place. Who remained were dad's close acquaintances and those who have the positions of the pack. "What do those cops want from you, Nathalie?" Uncle Robin asked. He then dropped his gaze towards the letter in my hands and added, "do you get a summon from them? What's that?" He was about to snatch the letter and the photo from my hands but I quickly hide them behind me. I can't afford for him to know more about J
"Do you believe in what the news is saying? That's completely ridiculous, right?" The cab driver broke the bridge of silence between us in the car. "I mean... There were a lot of problems Chicago was facing these days - heavy traffic, death rates, and poverty. It's not that I am against their plan of eliminating those monsters, but, I've heard no such thing as werewolves." I dont know if I should be pleased or not with what the cab driver told me. He sounded like monsters such as werewolves are not the main problem to society but the government itself. However, the government was right. We are monsters. "... Now, we have on the other line of the phone, the man behind the list. And he wants the public to address him as the Benefactor of this werewolf hunting trip. However, his safety is our main concern. So, we secure his basic information such as name, address, and contact number." added the reporter on the news. "People of the United States. Recently, we, the people o
"Josh, wait up!" Nathaniel whispered as he removed his clothes and shifted into a big bad wolf before he jumped over the fence and followed me. As soon as we heard the sounds of the gunshots, I bumped my body into the door by force, especially when it was locked. When we got the chance to see the image of the house, a flood of fresh drops of blood greeted us. The worst part is that I could barely sense anyone's presence in the house anymore aside from the body lying on the floor with an axe dug in straight to the woman's heart. "We're late," I muttered to myself with much regret that pinched the deepest part of my conscience. I could barely sense the woman's breathing anymore. Neither was her heartbeat. "She's dead." Nathaniel roamed around shortly, checking every corner of the house. We sensed the murderer's scent ten seconds ago but it disappeared like thin air all of a sudden before we could get in. But the house was already deserted. So, he went back to the
{Joshua's POV} "Baby, always remember what I told you, okay?" I muttered to Justine as soon as we stepped foot in front of his classroom. Undeniably, an entire part of me was feeling skeptical of the idea that he will go to class despite the situation he was in. Justine doesn't know yet that someone has put a price on his head amounting to four million dollars. I mean, my little brother was just a grade-schooler. He hurts no one and barely knows about Chicago werewolves. He doesn't deserve to be part of this nonsense and unreasonable dilemma. I don't want him to worry about his life either. All I want for him is to continue his study to have a better future similar to most humans. "That I should reach out to you or Lady Nathalie in case of emergency? Are we in danger, brother Josh? I heard you guys back in Lady Nathalie's place talking about werewolves who are in danger. Are we included in the list?" Justine asked back. And he's started to worry. "No, we're not
And I know he somehow noticed our surprised expressions, especially his brother, Justine. He cared for his brother very much. His little decision, whatever it is, also matters to Joshua. "My entire week is available. But once the clinic gets back its operation, I'm gonna focus my undivided attention so Justine and I could save enough to get back to the island." Joshua said back, trying to ease off Justine's awful expression. "But I thought we are going to stay with Lady Nathalie, brother Josh. Does that mean you're lying to me?" Justine said back in an unhappy tone. My brain was frozen for a few seconds. They only have each other's back if Joshua will insist on ignoring my help. Breaking them apart would be the last thing I would do. So, I tried digging into my brain about how to convince Joshua to stay in Chicago instead of going back to the island knowing they are no longer welcome to live there as her mama told us. That's why she willingly entrusted her two sons
Every one of us, including Justine, exchanged glances, trying to read each other's minds to know which side of the choice we are on. But no matter which side Joshua chooses, I will forever be supporting him. "Then, we'll help them. But, for the record, this is not an assurance that we could protect all of them," had to point that out. I don't Joshua would blame not just me when things go south. My family may be that wealthy enough to have billions of dollars in my bank accounts but I'm not desperate enough to kill the wolves, including our pack members. What good could I get about that? Let alone paying millions of dollars to eliminate thousands of them. "Besides, we still don't know who's madman is behind all these. Putting millions of dollars in our heads requires a massive amount of money in their bank accounts." "So, does this mean my head was priced at a hundred million dollars? 'Cause that was the figure written parallel to my name." Joshua's confrontation ma
Despite Joshua's weakened wolf, he still has the strength to punch Nathaniel in the face. His rage exploded like a volcanic eruption. Aside from that his explosion was extremely hot, no one would dare block his way unless you were ready to get a punch from him too. "Wait... You told him?" Could not help but lush out my frustration to Nathaniel instead of taking his side. I pushed him by force when I could not believe he preceded me even if he knows there was no slight chance between us. And I thought of our sex as a huge mistake driven by the call of alcohol in our systems. "No. I didn't. But I thought you already told him since you heard it yourself, he was referring to our..." Nathaniel cut off his words before making things worse. "No. I haven't told him yet, you idiot. That was already part of my plan, but not now when all our lives are in great danger including the kid. I'm afraid my name was already included on the list." "What list are you talking about?" Jo
"Rescue was on their way, Nathalie. Please hold until we reached the road you're in, okay?" Those were the last words coming from Nathaniel from the other line of the phone before the call got ended. "Okay. Thank you so much, Mr Nathaniel. But, please, come quick. Brother Josh started not to look good." Justine's words made me stealth a glimpse at the rearview mirror and found out indeed, his brother doesn't look good. The colour of his skin started losing its normal glow and was soaked in profuse sweat. I could barely hear his heartbeat either. Neither was his breathing. "Joshua, can you talk? How are you feeling?" I asked and stayed focused on driving the car to avoid getting hit by those arrows and axes as much as possible. "Lady Nathalie, please, help Brother Josh. He's not breathing anymore." Justine's voice even increased my worries and fears, especially when Joshua is not responding to my inquiries. Justine suddenly screamed when Joshua's half of his bod
"Young man, is she your girlfriend?" the cab driver asked. "Are you dumping that kind of woman? Are you kidding me?" "First of all, she's someone's girlfriend. Next to that, I'm not talking to her. So, please, tell her that she needs to move away if she doesn't want to get hit by the car." Joshua said back. "You heard the man, Miss gorgeous. So, please, I'm not gonna say it again. There are a few cab drivers and passengers at the back who are more furious than you are. If I'm not gonna move away, they will put the blame me." Indeed there were a few cab drivers who just hopped out of their respective cars and some continued beeping their horns, making the entire waiting area into chaos. "I'm so sorry, Josh. What you see back there is not what you think it is. I tried to explain to you the reason but you were gone already. But, please, give me a chance to hear my reason. If you don't want to believe me afterwards, then I'm letting you go." "Hey, you? Will you mov
Nevertheless, the only face I see was Nathaniel who was heading in my direction, somewhat bothered. "Nathalie, you need to get back to the unit. Now. The guests are staring at you." "It's all your fucking fault he left." I made sure most guests on the ground floor heard it to make sure their sharp eyes were pointed at him. Then, I rushed back to the elevator and ascended to my unit alone. In a few minutes, Nathaniel followed with a blushing face and sharp eyes. He slid to the fridge and gulped a bottle of water in one go but I could sense the anger that was bothering him. "You know what, Nathalie? If you fucking want to blame it on me. Better say it in front of my face, not in front of the other people. And don't forget, it's also your fault since you've done nothing to make things right. Grow up." Nathaniel let go of the empty bottle of water and threw it into the trash bin. Then, he slid to the couch and switched on the television. And I just stood in front of
