Chapter 4

Author: Princess Ainsley
Jamie remembered everything clearly. Alvin had nearly given up on his own life fighting for her in her past life.

She met Alvin during the year she was sent abroad to further her studies. According to her timeline, Alvin should be getting his documents ready now to study for his master's abroad.

Alvin had started liking Jamie since she was in middle school. They were three years apart, so they had barely spent any time together. Their age gap was just too big, so there wasn't much that Alvin could do.

However, when they both reunited abroad in Holston, Alvin had then actively started pursuing her.

Jamie had always had her eyes only on Xavier. But whenever Xavier made her mad, she would automatically seek comfort from Alvin. Alvin knew that she was only treating him as a temporary replacement, but he never said a thing.

After Xavier found out about Alvin, he started attacking him and making everything difficult for him. Xavier tried to destroy all of Alvin's career paths, but Alvin still managed to start his own company despite the hardships thrown at him.

When Alvin was finally on Xavier's level, able to fight each other head-on, Jamie had already married Xavier.

Alvin had warned Jamie against Xavier, but since Jamie only had eyes for Xavier, she told him off and said extremely hurtful things to him. She told him he was delusional and that he would never be good enough for her.

Apart from that, she even blocked all of Alvin's contact numbers and accounts. It wasn't until after she died that she found out how hard Alvin had fought Xavier to get to her.

In the end, he lost everything to Xavier and became penniless. Still, he stood vigil by Jamie's grave, refusing to leave until his death.

She had let down a person who had loved her with all his heart.

Jamie lowered her gaze. She wondered what would have happened if she had chosen Alvin in her past life. Maybe she wouldn't have had such a bloody ending after all.

For a marriage to work out, it was more important that her husband loved her more than she loved him.

So, in this life, Jamie finally understood how things should have been. She also knew who she had to choose this time.

After taking another deep breath, she clenched her fist and said, "You can do it, Jamie Norman!"

Then, she brought her tray of food to the table where Alvin was sitting.

"Hey, isn't that the belle from the Journalism Club? I think her name is Jamie Norman or something similar."

"Is she going to talk to Alvin? But Alvin's known to be completely cold and unapproachable. Do you know Ingrid Winters from Drama Club? Even a pretty lady like her couldn't grab Alvin's attention. She was basically offering herself to him on a silver platter, and he still refused to budge!"

"I think Alvin's gay!"

"I bet ten dollars that Alvin's going to ignore Jamie. He's not going to talk to her!"

"I bet ten dollars too! I bet that he won't even look at her!"

The students in the cafeteria started gossiping among themselves. Of course, Jamie overheard everything, but she just ignored them all.

She walked up to Alvin and set her tray on the table before sitting down.

She never realized that her phone was ringing because she'd silenced the phone earlier. However, while sitting down, Jamie accidentally tapped on the green button and answered the call without knowing it. With that, the call connected at once.

The caller ID on the screen said "Uncle Xav".

Xavier never said a word. However, he also didn't hang up.

"Can I sit here, Alvin?" Jamie asked, getting straight to the point.

Alvin looked up at her quietly. He frowned slightly.

"There are no other places left," Jamie said, obviously lying through her teeth.

Then, without waiting for Alvin to agree or disagree with her, she slid into the seat. Alvin didn't say much either and continued to eat. He didn't look like he planned on talking to her.

"Can I get your number or some other contact information? It's so that I can pay you back for just now," Jamie asked. She then slid her phone over to Alvin.

Alvin finally spoke again. "There's no need."

"But I don't like owing anyone any favors," Jamie said, fluttering her eyelashes innocently at him.

Alvin's eyelid twitched before he looked up at Jamie again. His eyes were still calm when he frowned at her once more.

Jamie immediately remembered the past. Whenever she tried acting innocently with him, he would react the same way he did now. However, he eventually gave in and let her have her way, agreeing to anything she said.

It was rather cute of him.

Nobody else knew this side of Alvin. Only Jamie had ever seen it before.

"It's fine if you don't want to give me your number. I can just withdraw the cash later and send it over to your dorm," Jamie said, giving him a wide grin as she suggested an alternative.

Alvin was easily embarrassed. He couldn't handle it when Jamie was being so direct with him.

Even though Jamie was only a first-year student at the college, she turned heads wherever she went because she was attractive. Everyone in Aster College knew about her.

If Jamie really showed up at Alvin's dorm, he would have to live with the gossip and rumors for a long time.

"I'll give you my number," Alvin said mechanically.

"You're finally acknowledging that we used to know each other," Jamie said with a haughty huff.

She then moved her phone closer to him. After exchanging contacts, she followed him on his other accounts, and he immediately accepted her requests.

"Let's eat now. I'll transfer the money to you later," Jamie told him with a smile.

Alvin didn't reply to her as he continued eating quietly. Jamie also began to eat.

It was only then that the previously connected call finally ended.

At the same time, a black Bentley was nearing the gates of Aster College. Xavier was seated in the back, his face devoid of any expression.

Andrea, seated next to him, secretly glanced at him without him knowing before going absolutely still.

She had heard Jamie's coquettish voice over the phone call just now. However, it wasn't directed at Xavier but at another guy.

Andrea's eyelashes fluttered quickly. She realized that she must have just been imagining things after all.

Jamie was 18 years old, at the peak of her youth. There was no reason for her to be in love with a man who was 12 years older than her.

It didn't make sense at all.

"What are you thinking, Xavier? We're here," Andrea said nonchalantly.

It was only then that Xavier snapped out of it. He blinked a few times and said, "Drive in. Go to the cafeteria area."

The driver didn't hesitate and went straight through the gates toward the college cafeteria.

"Jamie probably never realized that you were calling her. She's quite impressive, isn't she? She managed to improve her studies so well that she got into Aster College. I think you don't need to worry about her anymore," Andrea said, a wide smile on her face.

Xavier didn't reply to her immediately.

After a moment of hesitation, Andrea said, "I think she was talking to a guy just now. Jamie is such a pretty girl. I'm sure that she has plenty of admirers who like her."

"She's only 18. What does she know?" Xavier said solemnly.

Andrea could sense that Xavier was unhappy. She didn't dare to comment any further.

Some words were just better left unsaid.

However, Andrea couldn't stop herself from looking at Xavier.

Why was it that she thought Xavier seemed upset about the whole thing?

While contemplating that question, the car had already rolled to a stop outside the cafeteria by the guardrails.

At that moment, inside the cafeteria, the other student had witnessed Jamie and Alvin exchanging their contacts with each other, even if the two of them looked calm and collected.

Everyone burst into a flurry of excitement immediately.

Alvin seemed to be the only unaffected one. He just continued with his food until he finished everything on his plate. Then, he returned his tray, cleaned up after himself, and turned to leave. He didn't even say a word to Jamie.

Jamie cocked her eyebrow slightly. It wasn't like she minded. She continued enjoying her food.

She had already sent Alvin a message.

The whole of Asteria knew that Xavier had taken in an orphaned little girl whom he really liked. After all, he only provided her with the best of everything there was to offer.Of course, Andrea knew it as well, and she would make sure everything was immaculate."Thank you, Aunt Andrea. Can I get a dress from Chanel's designer, please?" Jamie asked, throwing Andrea a wide, innocent grin."Sure," Andrea said with a nod. That request was nothing compared to learning that Jamie indeed harbored no romantic feelings for Xavier.Jamie just grinned even wider at Andrea in return. However, she cautiously glanced at the black Bentley behind them. Was Xavier not here? Had Andrea come alone? From what Jamie could remember, Xavier would never let Andrea come looking for her on her own. But now? After going quiet for a bit, Jamie decided to ask. "How long have you been here, Aunt Andrea?""About ten minutes," Andrea answered truthfully.Jamie felt her heart skip a beat when she heard Andre

I don't have a driver anymore."Alvin narrowed his eyes slightly. He didn't quite understand what Jamie was implying."I'm an orphan. My parents died when I was five years old. One of my father's friends has been caring for me since then. However, that's not my home. I'm an adult now, so my uncle doesn't have to keep tabs on me anymore," Jamie explained lightly.Alvin was shocked. Before he could say anything, Jamie continued, "Also, I've been living by myself for nearly half a year. I've always been relying on myself, you know."Jamie sounded proud of herself. Alvin still looked shocked, but he didn't say anything.Jamie watched Alvin's reaction for

Jamie frowned slightly. However, she still walked after Xavier in silence. As usual, Xavier was dressed in an immaculate suit, and he stuck out like a sore thumb in an old and run-down place like her apartment. There wasn't a hint of joke or sarcasm on Jamie's face when she told Xavier about her plans. It was as if the bothersome crybaby of the little girl he knew had suddenly grown up overnight.Xavier swallowed, his Adam's apple bobbing as he gradually calmed himself down.It was fine if Jamie wanted to stay in Asteria. At least he could still keep an eye on her. He forgot everything about swearing never to meddle in Jamie's life again because he wanted to take control of her life again once more.Xavier didn't linger on the matter anymore. However, his eyes were still sharp and piercing as he asked, "Who was that person you came home with?""He's a senior of mine. We were going home in the same direction, so we caught the bus together," Jamie replied, calming her nerves down."Same direction?" Xavier scoffed and burst out laughing. It was obvious that he didn't believe her.He was already 30 years old, so he could see through that young man's intentions right away. No matter how m

Xavier didn't know if Jamie was being sarcastic or truly calling him pathetic. At any rate, under this circumstance, he just stared at her without moving a muscle.Jamie frowned slightly. Then, she let out a soft exclamation and "accidentally" fell right into his arms. Her lips pressed firmly against him on the lips too. This would probably be the very last time she'd ever get to be so physically intimate with Xavier. She did this to nip her feelings for him in the bud and also to destroy any chances of him getting together with her, if ever. She remembered from her past life that Xavier only finally sent her abroad after he couldn't put up with her anymore."Jamie Norman!" Xavier exclaimed, his voice low and threatening. A split second later, he grabbed Jamie and dragged her off his body.He used so much power to pull her away that he left angry red marks around her wrists. However, he still had no intention of letting go of her.His eyes were cold and terrifying. "How dare you!

By then, Xavier had already tapped on the WhatsApp icon on Jamie's phone and opened up Alvin's messaging window on it. Alvin had sent Jamie a voice message."You don't have to pay me back for lunch. Just treat me to a coffee next time."Alvin's voice sounded very nice and youthful. Jamie could already imagine Alvin's facial expression just by listening to his voice. He'd be looking at her a little helplessly, a little frustratedly, yet quite endearingly.Of course, Xavier also heard the voice message. He could also tell from Jamie's expression that she was happy to hear from him.Xavier's eyes darkened even more. Jamie managed to snatch her phone away from Xavier's hands. She wanted to reply to Alvin. She knew Alvin rarely replied to anybody's messages because he liked being a lone ranger. So, did this mean that she was already someone special in his heart?Jamie had completely forgotten about Xavier's presence, and this angered Xavier even more.Xavier had been treating Jamie l

The music was still playing in the practice room, making both Jamie and Alvin miss the sound of footsteps coming from the corridor outside.…The college dean, John Crawford, and architecture faculty dean, Peter Holt, struggled to keep up with Xavier's walking pace.Every year, Lockhart Group would offer internships to a group of top-performing students from Aster College, and many of the interns would then continue working long-term with the company afterward.Xavier himself was considered a genius in the business industry, so he had always been invited over to Aster College to give talks. Usually, he would reject those invitations, and everyone was used to his rejections. This year, however, Xavier had agreed to give the talk. In fact, he hadn't just agreed to give the talk—he even wanted to personally meet with the group of recommended top students who would be receiving the internship offer from the company.Xavier's decision confused the deans to no end. Then, I'll be practicing. You can just stay there and watch."Alvin hummed in acknowledgement. He continued standing in place as his eyes followed Jamie around the practice room. Probably because there was nobody else in the room besides them both—the look in Alvin's eyes was less restrained and a little more greedy today. Still, the look only appeared for a brief moment, so Jamie never caught sight of it.Jamie coughed slightly and went back to the sound system to replay the song. "Mr. Lockhart, the dean of Aster College is inviting you over so that they may recommend their top students to intern at Lockhart Group. They'd also like to invite you to give a talk."The Dean of Aster College, John Crawford, had quite an amicable relationship with the Lockharts. Naturally, Xavier would hear them out if he received any requests from them. That was why Andrew told Xavier about the invitation right away to get his opinion on it."When?" Xavier asked, his voice low and deep."Mr. Crawford said that you could go over anytime you're available," said Andrew."Then I'm going there now," Xavier replied straight away. Xavier asked calmly."Three days from today," she replied.Xavier hummed, still as calmly as ever. Then, he passed the bag of costumes back to Jamie. His birthday was exactly three days later too, on September 9th.
