CHAPTER 35

At first, Katherine heard one gunshot.

A long silence followed. Then, she heard two more pops—deafening and heart-shattering.

Whimpering, she collapsed onto the ground, shifting herself into the corner of the panic room. Her heart felt heavy, and her breathing became ragged as she curled up, her thoughts unstable.

After that, she didn't hear anything anymore. Not for the next five or ten minutes, until she heard the sound of shoes crunching on gravel from the small window near the ceiling behind her.

It sounded as though something was being dragged across the floor. Was it Lucifer? Was that his body being dragged?

Keeping mute, she pressed her hands to her ears, blocking out the nauseating sound. She didn't even want to hear it—regardless of thinking about who it was or how they'd been executed gruesomely.

She rocked herself unsteadily, gripping onto the edge of the steel table beside her. In a few minutes, she felt the door of the panic room crack open, and her head flew u

CHAPTER 36“You don't. But it's best if you accompany me. I can't afford to leave you alone in the cottage now,” he said sternly, his voice full of authority. Reluctantly, Katherine nodded, and Lucifer got down from the car, crossing to the other side and pulling the door open for her. She stepped out, gently raising her diamond-embedded red dress to keep it from dragging on the floor. The dainty necklace that rested on her neck complimented the dress perfectly, along with the dangle earrings. Lucifer fixed up the tie of his black suit, straightening the arms out before taking hold of her arm. Together, they walked through the back entrance of the club and took an elevator down to where the auction club was happening. The venue seemed to be dripping with elegance itself, with a spacious stage in the upper front and other fancy tables situated behind it. Guests turned their heads as soon as Lucifer and Katherine walked in, and little murmurs filled the venue. Katherine's face h

Chapter 37The crowd erupted in a series of gasps. “It’s going…” The auctioneer chanted, as each guest held their breath. Katherine glanced around, watching how they were all so intensely focused on this veiled girl before them, and most importantly, Lucifer. She seemed to pique his interest, and Katherine could tell by her aura, but she wanted to know why exactly.“And…sold!” The auctioneer said with a delighted smile, gesturing towards Lucifer. All eyes immediately turned to the man who could spend so much on an assassin. Some wondered why he wanted her so much to bid that high, while other's minds ventured to insidious plans that he could be plotting. After all, from now on, they’d have to be on their toes. From the other side of the room where he sat, Giovanni’s eyes narrowed, staring at Lucifer. There was something there, but he couldn’t place a finger on it---not yet. He cleared his throat uneasily, shifting uncomfortably in his seat. The auctioneer led the veiled lady down t

CHAPTER 38“I don’t understand,” Katherine said, so full of confusion, “She was just here.” She gestured toward the couch, where a particular area had been indented due to weight. It meant she had probably just slipped out. “She will be back.” He murmured, going to sit back on the couch. “Isla is missing, and you’re just going to kick back and relax?” She scoffed, eyeing him.“And?” He laughed, kicking his feet up on the table before him. “She won’t last minutes in these woods. Especially this late at night, she’ll be back soon, don’t worry.” He informed, so sure of himself. Wherever she went, she surely couldn’t be far. She smacked her lips together, flopping on the couch beside him, although, it didn’t take long before she slept off.~The next morning, they were returning to the estate, since it had been fixed up now, and his men had cleared it out. Still, the thought of one thing lingered on both their minds. “Isla still isn’t back, Lucifer,” Katherine said, tapping his should

CHAPTER 39There came that familiar dull ache between Katherine’s legs, as she slipped out of Lucifer’s bed. As usual, Lucifer wasn’t in bed. But, this time she didn’t just wake up peacefully—it was noise. The loud, thunderous voice of an incredibly angry man. She sighed, pulling her hair into a ponytail, before crossing to the bathroom and rinsing her face off. Her body felt heavier than usual, but she ignored the feeling. “Probably all the stress I’ve been putting myself through…” She murmured as she ran her hands under the tap. Within a few days, she’d gone from sunshine to moonlight, quite literally. Her hair was disheveled and looked extremely unhealthy, her eyes had deep, dark eye bags under them, and she was starting to lose a little weight. She looked underfed, which was funny because, in this estate, she ate like a queen, morning, afternoon, and night. Just a little hiccup though, nothing that good food and rest wouldn’t fix. She wiped her hands on the wash cloth carefully

CHAPTER 40Katherine remained frozen on the couch she had been seated on for the past ten minutes. The only thing she could do was retrace back to the conversation that she and Lucifer had earlier as she stared at the piping hot cup of coffee on the table in front of her.“Did I say something wrong?” She murmured under her breath, tossing her hair over her shoulder. It seldom made sense to her how quickly Lucifer could go from being neutral to cold. It happened all so fast that even she was still left reeling from the shock. It was nothing new, but right when she thought that they were getting somewhere, he just shut it all down. Scoffing with disbelief, she rose from the seat, picked up the coffee, and went to the kitchen to pour it down the drain. As she violently scrubbed at the cup, she wondered if he’d ever stop with his annoying mood swings. After all, she was to blame. She doubted she ever really meant anything to him. He was right. All she was was the daughter of a debtor—a

He clasped his hands together on the table, raising a brow. “Whether you have news for me or not, I expect you to inform me before you step into my house.” He said, his voice teetering on the edge of caution and annoyance. “Right. I apologize.” She stepped forward, clearing her throat. “You just…haven’t been around the club lately.” Her eyes scanned Lucifer, observing his countenance.“Whta’s that got to do with you?” He murmured, redirecting his gaze back to the papers on his table and scribbling his signature at the bottom.“It’s not about me. I heard some interesting things. People are starting to wonder. There's talk about you and your... attachments. You’ve been preoccupied with other things lately.” A sly smirk crept up on her face.He raised a brow, his patience already wearing thin. “Get to the point, Natalia. Before I have security drag you out.”“I just thought…” She placed her bag on his table, folding her hands behind her bac

CHAPTER 42“What exactly do you want?” Katherine grumbled, quickly slipping the foreign key into her pocket.“Well, can’t I check up on you anymore?” Natalia touched her shoulder lightly, her voice dripping with fake sweetness. Katherine scoffed, standing up from her chair and crossing her hands over her chest. She wasn’t in the mood for any of Natalia’s stupid antics. Besides, what was she doing in the house anyway?Katherine felt her heart rate quicken as she stared right at Natalia. Or maybe Lucifer had called her over to relieve himself of tension the way he always did. Yet, if that was the case, she looked very neat and Katherine knew that it most likely didn’t happen. A part of her was happy even, that Lucifer didn’t do it. But, another part was annoyed that she was back in the house. She couldn’t just leave Lucifer alone? She was just a wench that was obsessed with him, or maybe his money instead.“Check up on me?” Katherine shook her head, moving towards the stepstool and cl

CHAPTER 43Katherine rubbed her eyes sleepily, staring down at the bright screen. On it, the words, “You’re not who you think you are,” stared right back at her. “What is this?” She murmured under her breath, sitting up with the support of one hand. The other was shaky, unstable even as she stared down at the message, her eyes skimming over the foreign words over and over again. What was this and who sent this to her? She wondered if it had anything to do with being having been around Lucifer lately. No matter how many times her eyes trailed over the short sentence, she couldn’t seem to make any sense of it. Maybe it was just a prank being played on her from a random number or something. Maybe even Lucufer. She wouldn't put anything past that man. Maybe all he wanted to do was prove his point and stand on it. Did he have to really go this far? There was no need rubbing salt into the wound he'd already made. She gulped, clicking the glowing icon beside the chat window, and pressed

CHAPTER 121Something was wrong with Katherine. It wasn't just the dull cramps that had been plaguing her all day, nor the strange, twisting discomfort that made her insides feel like they were being scraped raw with a thousand scalpels. It was like a bad omen and it sent a feeling of dread down her spine. She ached everywhere— her shoulders, her backs, her legs. It was like she wanted to tell and sit and cry and lay down at the same time. She had forced herself to sit at the dining table, her fingers trembling as she lifted the fork to her mouth. The moment she chewed, nausea engulfed her and her stomach clenched in protest. The potato tasted like paste on her tongue, and for a second, she thought she might choke. She swallowed hard as she struggled to keep her breathing even. She pushed her fork into the potato on her plate, lifting it for a second bite.Across the table, Asher’s gaze flickered to her again. He had been watching her for the past ten minutes with concern in his eye

His lip split further as blood dribbled down his chin and stained his already ruined skin. His breath came out ragged, almost too painful to bear. His arms were bound behind him with chains that dug deep into his wrists, leaving bruises under the layers of grime and dried blood. The almost dark room reeked of sweat and rust and was unbearably hot. He shut his swollen eye and his ribs ached with each breath. A kick to his side caused his body to slump forward but the chains kept him upright. To offend them the more, he grinned through bloodied teeth, defiance burning in his eyes. “Go ahead. Hit me again,” he spat, with blood pooling at the corner of his mouth. “Doesn’t change a damn thing. I want to see my father.”The guards exchanged unimpressed glances, unimpressed, before one of them raised his fist again. But before the blow could land, the

The dim light from the bedside lamp barely illuminated Antonio’s room.“Typical him,” she murmured as she strode in, a grocery bag in hand. Her eyes scanned the space. There was no one there. She walked around. Maybe she should just lay and wait for him to come or perhaps she should play some games. She took her time before deciding to go to his work table. She picked up the figurines and nodded in amusement. Her fingers trailed the documents she knew she shouldn't dare mess with, and locked onto a notepad sitting on the desk with the pages slightly ajar. She ignored it but the lines on it caught her attention. Without hesitating, she picked it up, flipping through hastily scribbled notes, dates, markings and trails leading to God knows. The door creaked open behind her, causing her to jump and drop the note.“What the hell are you doing?” Antonio’s voice was sharper than intended while his

Her spoon hovered over the ice cream as she glared at him. “That's an asshole behaviour and just so you know, I do not like it.”“Sorry I brought it up. I don’t want to unnerved you.”“Well you already did,” she sulked.“Are pregnant women usually like this?” He asked in curiosity. “This has nothing to do with my pregnancy,” she scolded. “Why does everyone blame it on hormones.”“I feel so hot from the anger you're radiating,” he said."I mean it makes no sense. Why does everyone seem to have a problem with my name and clothes?" she muttered, suddenly exhausted. He exhaled slowly. "Okay, first of all, upsetting you was never my intention.”“I've heard that twice,” she pointed out.“It reminds them of someone," Asher said without emotion. She frowned. CHAPTER 117Katherine stirred in her sleep. Her throat was parched almost as though she was stuck on a dessert for two months. Her eyes fluttered open, adjusting to the dimness of the room. She felt baby elodie pressed against her and it reminded her of where she had slept. Madelaine and Adelaide lay sprawled in tangled blankets, deep in sleep and they let out gentle snores. Katherine glanced at the clock to her side. It was late, way past midnight. She always seemed to fall asleep in the kids room lately. She sighed and ran a hand over her face before carefully tucking the covers around the girls. Moving slowly, she scooped Elodie up. The little girl's lashes fluttered in deep sleep.Katherine pressed a light kiss to her forehead before placing her in the crib. The baby stirred again but settled into sleep, her tiny fingers curling over her face. She quietly tiptoed out of the room, careful not to move a thing, and heaved a sigh of relief when she successfully made it out.The hous

CHAPTER 116Antonio’s finger danced swiftly over the keyboard , his brows furrowed in concentration as the lines of code scrolled down the screen. Lucifer stood behind him with his arms crossed on his chest. His gaze locked onto the monitor attentively without batting an eyelash as he watched his man do his thing. There was a low noise at first before a beep sound broke through the silence. The tracking signal blinked rapidly and Antonio sucked in his breath as he tried to figure out what was going on. He clicked the keyboard hard. So hard it seemed as though his fingers were going to fall off. The red dot flickered near an abandoned district on the outskirts of the city and he peered closely."We’ve got him," Antonio said, a little too excited, with his hands flying across the keys to zoom in on the location. The GPS pinpointed the area.He leaned back. “Something is wrong.”“What is it?” Lucifer demanded, his voice cold.“But this isn't his house location, this is somewhere diffe

CHAPTER 115Cassius had never been a man to beg anyone who wasn’t Lucifer. Not for power. Not for mercy. Not for anything.Yet here he was, standing at the gates of Giovanni Ivanovo’s mansion, knowing damn well he was about to do exactly that. The guards barely spared him a glance before stepping aside, to let him in. No questions. No hesitation. That alone told him Giovanni was expecting him.Cassius adjusted his coat, keeping his expression blank as he was led through the mansion’s dimly lit halls. The air smelled like expensive cologne, aged whiskey, and blood. Not fresh. But there. Always there. At the end of the corridor, the double doors swung open and he was let in by the guards.Giovanni sat behind a sleek black desk with a glass of whiskey in his hand. He didn’t look up right away, instead he swirled the liquid slowly, like a man with all the time in the world.Cassius stepped inside and almost jumped out of his skin as the doors shut behind him.The silence was disturbing and

CHAPTER 114Her heart thumped loudly in her chest, so loud and so fast that she felt it was going to explode. The children's scream was suddenly replaced with a laughter that filled the hallway. Katherine slowed her steps, gripping the hem of her dress as she peeked into the living room.Adelaide and Madelaine were sitting cross-legged on the floor, their giggles echoing as they played some sort of hand game—with a stranger.A young man lounged in the middle of the room, effortlessly relaxed. His golden-blond hair was slightly tousled, his skin was smooth, and his lips curved into a lazy smirk. He had striking blue eyes, bright and sharp, like the kind you’d see on athletes gracing magazine covers. He was effortlessly handsome, like a footballer who knew exactly how good he looked.Katherine’s stomach twisted into a knot. Who the hell was he?Katherine came closer, her motherly instinct suddenly clicking. “Girls, get behind me.”The giggling stopped. Adelaide and Madelaine gazed at

CHAPTER 113Katherine folded another dress and placed it neatly into her bag. She had gone over this decision a thousand times in her head, cause she was at a losing end but what had she to gain if she stayed back?On the bed, the girls sat cross-legged, their big eyes silently watching her. They didn’t say a word, but their eyes were filled with a sadness they couldn’t hide. She wanted to tell them it wasn’t forever, that she would come back for them, but promises like that felt too expensive. And were never forgotten. Amanda and Ethan had left early that morning, saying they were going shopping. Amanda had even smiled at her before leaving, casually mentioning, “I do hope you'll change your mind and take up this job again. The kids have been the happiest and well behaved since you came into our lives.”But that was not convincing enough to make her change her mind.Adelaide suddenly spoke out, her voice interrupting her thoughts. “Are you leaving because we’ve been mean?”Katherine
