Lucifer, adorned in an immaculate white shirt which was opened at the collar, sat at the edge of his desk with his legs crossed at his ankles, eyes dark and droopy, his presence alone oozing power.
He twirled a large Havana cigar between his index finger and thumb as he watched Katherine's sleeping body. His eyes ran through her perfect body as she lay on the couch and he unconsciously imagined her tied to a bedpost.
With a slight tilt of his head, he silently ordered the guard standing by the couch to wake her up which he did by splashing some water on her face.
Katherine muttered something in her sleep and blinked many times as she slowly sat up.
A corner of Lucifer's lip curled up in a smirk, displaying his dimpled left cheek, as he watched her childish reaction to the disturbance.
Katherine rubbed her eyes and yawned as she tried to recall everything that had happened and why her room seemed so different, but when her eyes landed on the blurry figure of a tall man staring intently at her, the yawn was cut short and she became fully awake.
The events from a few hours ago began to play in her head and she remembered how she had been betrayed by her own stepfather and dragged away from her house.
"W-where am I? Who are you?" She asked shakily, trying to mask her fear by putting on an aggressive facade. Her eyes darted across the large room with so many bizarre paintings and floor-to-ceiling windows that showcased the city's stunning skyline.
As soon as her eyes landed on the pen knife lying on a small glass table next to a large bucket filled with cold rum and gin, she didn't think twice before running to grab it.
The guard took a step forward to stop her but Lucifer raised his palm, stopping him. His smirk grew wider as Katherine shakily pointed the knife towards him yet he was unfazed.
Her courage stimulated something within him. Not many people had the audacity to threaten or oppose him, yet here she was, pointing a knife towards him without even thinking twice of the consequences.
"I'll use this on you if you don't let me go, and I'm not bluffing!" Katherine said in a stern voice.
"Katherine darling," Lucifer started and stood up straight. He liked the surprised look on her face as he mentioned her name.
"It displeases me that you think I'm holding you against your will," he paused and slid a tall bottle of wine towards himself.
"But I won't stop you if you intend to leave. The doors are unlocked," he added as he poured some of the wine into a glass.
Katherine looked from Lucifer to his guard with confusion.
Was he just giving her the opportunity to leave? She asked herself.
She gulped and tightened her grip around the handle of the knife, hoping that she would not have to use it.
"Don't move," she said to Lucifer who shrugged nonchalantly and took a sip from the glass, running his tongue over his lower lip afterwards.
Walking backwards, Katherine shuffled towards the door and took hold of its handle.
Feeling victorious, she flung the door open with a small smile and quickly turned around to run but was instead greeted with two vicious looking armed men staring back at her.
She staggered back into the room and swallowed hard. The knife was quickly pulled out of her hand by the guard who had woken her up and when she turned sharply to get it back, she realized it was no use. Whoever this man was, he was powerful, and he definitely was not going to let her leave so easily.
Lucifer smiled as she walked back to the couch dejectedly and Katherine wished more than anything that she could slap that condescending smile off his face.
"Good girl. Now that we've established the fact that there's no running away for you, why don't we get to the introductions?" Lucifer said and dumped his half full glass on the table.
"You already know my name, what other introductions do we need?"
"I'm called Lucifer Cain."
"I don't care if you share names with the devil," Katherine snapped.
Lucifer's brows raised slightly with fascination at the harsh tone of her voice but he waved it off with a chuckle.
"What do you want with me? And what business do you have with my father?"
"We're going straight to the point now, aren't we? Well here's the deal, you'll work for me for as long as I want you to until your father pays up what he owes me."
"Work for you? After you forcefully brought me here? Why would I want to work for a man as heartless as you are?"
"Because you have no choice, dear Katherine," he replied and smirked in that way that showed his dimpled chin. Katherine swallowed hard when she found herself taking in this ungodly detail about him. His smile was charming yet there was something unnerving about it.
"And if I'm not wrong, he has a bad heart, doesn't he? And he gets this occasional seizures from time to time, that's why he has to take medication. I'm sure you don't want to imagine what it would look like to watch him convulse to death, do you?" Lucifer's smile was gone now as he spoke.
Katherine stared at him warily as her heart pounded against her chest. She still felt the sharp sting of her stepfather's blatant betrayal and she was extremely pissed at him, but she couldn't ever bear seeing him convulse. The memory she had of those moments when she was younger had been etched to her mind so deeply that she was ready to give anything to make them go away.
She pulled her gaze away from him and sighed.
"What do you want me to do?" She asked exasperatedly.
"I run one of the largest strip clubs in the country and those long legs of yours look like they'll be perfect for dancing. You will pole dance at my club and entertain my esteemed guests until your stepfather repays his debt," Lucifer explained as he slowly paced around the room.
"Pole dance?” Katherine looked horrified. “I'm sorry but I have no idea how to do that.”
Lucifer began to chuckle softly again and pace around the desk.
“It's not an option. It's an order.”
“Okay okay, mister, I think we need to strike a bargain here. I should be allowed to stare my own terms and conditions, right?" Katherine opted boldly and Lucifer looked impressed for a split second but his indifferent visage soon took over his look of surprise.
He advanced slowly towards her and when he was just a few feet away, her breath seemed hooked in her throat. His presence was overwhelming and extreremely intimidating. And when he bent slightly to her face level, she was too dumbstruck to even move an inch away. Her whole body seemed to turn to mush as she looked into his dark mysterious eyes, eyes that seemed to see even to the innermost parts of her being.
"Get yourself ready for tomorrow night," he added quietly, not caring to listen to her terms before lifting himself up and then dismissing her with a wave of his hand.
The guard who had been watching the whole exchange then ordered her to leave.
"Don't touch me!" Katherine shrieked when he held her arm.
Lucifer watched until they were both gone and then he sighed.
Katherine's feisty behavior did not sit right with him and he reasoned that she might end up causing trouble for him at the club where he wanted her to work.
He needed his girls to be calm and submissive, and even though Katherine seemed the exact opposite, there was something about her that still excited him.
"She'd be better off with Señor Castello," he said thoughtfully and picked up his phone.
Castello was an Italian business man who had made a name for himself in the construction sector yet his major income came from his trafficking of foreign girls and Lucifer knew that he would be more than interested in a young American girl who was good looking.
"A call from you always means a good thing, Cain. How are you?" Castello asked.
"Business, Castello.” Lucifer said, cutting out the niceties.
“I have a good looking American, young, promising."
"Ah! Sounds good already. What's the price?"
"Thirty thousand,” he replied flatly.
"Thirty! What the..." Castello paused abruptly and Lucifer narrowed his eyes.
Even though Castello was over twice his age, he knew better than to cuss around Lucifer, especially when talking business.
"Forget about it then, I don't have a second to spare..."
"I'll take you up on your offer, Cain,” Castello said quickly.
“My consigliere will come down there tomorrow to finalize things."
"Good," Lucifer said and ended the call.
Seeing that it was nearly midnight, he took off his suit and locked his doors through the invisible button on his desk before walking towards a private elevator that led to his room.
His room was a palatial space that could even make for an art gallery. He loved the silence, the solace, the dim lighting and most of all, he loved that his home and office was just an elevator away.
As he walked into the bedroom, he felt too tired to even change into his nightwear so he just took off his shirt and collapsed on the bed and was dozing in seconds.
The nightmares soon came again. And this time, they were worse. The sounds were clearer and the images were more vivid.
He could hear his mother's voice screaming for help and his father's grunt as he swore to Giovanni Ivanovo that he would pay for what he had done.
It all happened when he was just ten years old but the memories were fresher than any other.
The image continued to replay in his head, faster, louder, making him clutch the sheets as he watched from the small opening of the closet as his mother and father were both killed by Giovanni Ivanovo in cold blood.
The guttural sounds of his mother throwing up before finally giving up the ghost was what jerked him out of bed while screaming out her name.
"Mother!" He screamed out from his sleep, his face wet with tears and beads of sweat trailing down his body.
As he sat up, he realized that it was morning already and he had experienced yet another sleepless night.
He pulled out five tablets from the bottle on his bedside table and swallowed them raw, not minding that he was taking one extra pill everyday.
His phone rang from the bedside table and he sat up with a grunt to get it. He hoped it was Castello's consigliere who had arrived.
"Boss?"
Unfortunately it was Antonio, his capo.
"What is it?" He asked distastefully.
"The girl from last night, boss. She's escaped!”
THREE"What the fuck is that supposed to mean?" Lucifer roared, already storming out of his room. The elevator seemed to take too long to get him up to his office and he fought hard to keep still."We just saw the…"He hung up before Antonio could finish his statement, knowing fully well that the elevator would not be able to contain him and his ferocious anger if Antonio said anything more.Red and boiling with rage, he flung the door of the room open to see three of his men staring in his direction like confused idiots. There was a flicker of fear in their eyes as he advanced closer.Lucifer looked around the room and put the pieces together within seconds; it was obvious that she had removed the curtain from the window and pulled the bedsheets off, tied them together to form a long strong rope and then tied one end of it to the immovable legs of the bed.Lucifer's anger grew as he traced the makeshift rope to the window where she had escaped down from."How the hell did this happen
FOURBeing gone for about two months now, Katherine now felt safe enough and did not have that alarmed look in her eyes anymore. She was constantly searching the faces of the men on the train she usually took back to the ghetto where she was now squatting in with a girl around her age who had offered to house her as long as she brought back food daily from the cafe where she now worked.Even though the manager of the cafe had initially refused to hire her due to her frail stature, Katherine pleaded to be given two weeks trial after which she was hired due to good reviews from the customers. She had dyed her blonde hair jet black and had even cut it to her nape length to avoid being easily recognized. But as the days went by, her strength seemed to slip. She was constantly losing her grip on objects like trays and glasses and her eyes swirled without warning every now and then, yet she forced herself to work extra hours to provide for her basic needs. She strongly believed that if Luci
Chapter 5Lucifer took Katherine home and carrying her in his arms, he led her down a narrow corridor to a place she didn't know. It obviously wasn't the same room she had been kept in when she was here. Katherine didn’t resist, even as her heartbeat quickened in her chest. She already knew how gravely she had offended him so she didn't say a word. She would be lucky if he locked her up, she thought. "Do you realize the gravity of what you have done?" Lucifer's raspy voice asked as it echoed through the corridor while they went. Katherine remained silent. She didn't want to say a word. Her eyes were already heavy with unshed tears at her flopped escape from him. Here she was again, back at his house and now at his mercy. When they reached a heavy wooden door, Luci opened it to reveal a room that was oddly furnished. The room was quite dark with very low lightings. It was stylishly furnished with what Katherine recognized to be chains, ropes and implements that made her stomach chu
Chapter 6Seven days just passed like a blur of pain and silence for Kat alone in the playroom. Her body ached from the punishment and the bruises on her skin. Luci sure had taken his wrath on her. She had by now grown accustomed to the cold and empty room alongside the ever present scent of leather and sweat that floated staly in the air like a cloud. Every creak of the door had her bracing up for another session of agony. The door opened and Luci walked right into the room. Seeing him again, she flinched back as she braced herself for the whipping that she knew would come. But nothing came. Instead he stepped into the room with his usual commanding presence as his piercing eyes locked in on her. She instinctively flinched as he approached as she expected from him the familiar sting of the whip. But instead, he walked up to her with slow and deliberate steps and stopped just in front of her. He squatted toward her and she reflexly shifted backward, but to her horror, he started tak
Chapter 7Kat’s chest rose and fell in uneven breaths as Luci's sinister grin seemed to falter her a little bit. The room felt suffocating and his commanding presence was already draining what little strength it was that she had left. She waited for him to answer her. And the idea of freedom dangled before her eyes like a golden carrot it was just too tempting to resist, yet the terms of this "contract" twisted her insides. Still, the alternative which obviously was a life confined to his wrath for even was even more terrifying.Luci placed the pen back on the table and stepped closer as he closed the distance between them and his dark and mischievous eyes bore into hers. His voice was sharp when he spoke, almost as sharp as a razor. "Well?" he asked in a tone that was laced with impatience. "Do you agree, or do I need to show you what defiance earns you?" He asked her. Kat flinched at the implication. Her wrists throbbed at the memory of the cuffs and her butt cheeks pinched her
Chapter 8Lucifer had his maid prepare and ready Katherine for her first night together with him. She was putting on a red silky night dress that exposed too much skin more than it covered. And that was upon the requests of Mr Cain, the maid had informed her. She was ushered into his bedroom to wait for him and while she was left alone in the room, she looked around the room to discover that his room was furnished to suit his character. Dark, brooding, elegant and......lifeless. She shuddered at that. There was no single iota of warmth in his room. Everything and furniture was made in dark colors. She chose not to think too much about that as she tried to wait for him while anticipating what she knew was going to be inevitable that night. When he finally came, it was late at night. The door to his bedroom opened with a slow and deliberate creak and his imposing figure immediately filled the room as his unique scent wafted to her nostrils. Kat froze where she sat on the edge of th
Chapter 9The room was dark and silent. Katherine stirred awake and her body ached, oh so painfully from the night's...... adventures. Ahem. Her mind was clouded as she still tried to process everything that had happened between her and Lucifer. She shifted slightly on the bed and the silk sheets felt so cool against her skin. Beside her, Lucifer lay still while he slept. From the light that filtered into the room through the heavy curtains she could see that his face was serene. They had both fallen asleep without even giving it a thought. She couldn't believe that she was lying in the same bed with him. She wanted to resent that thought. She had probably been to tired to leave for her own bedroom after their sex last night. For a moment, she watched him. His face was a mask of perfection in sleep, his features were sharp yet while asleep he looked oddly peaceful. She wondered how someone so terrifying and...... rude could look so human in moments like these. But that thought alo
Chapter 10Lucifer sat alone in his office. His chiseled face was twisted into a deep frown. His fingers tapped irritably on the desk as his mind replayed the events of the morning. Katherine had seen him in his weakest and most vulnerable state, and—fuck, that thought made his skin crawl with resentment.Damn it, Katherine. How could she say that, offering him to try out cookies, of all things, as if he were a frightened child? He clenched his jaw tightly as he willed the memory of her soft and concerned voice out of his mind. The more he tried to suppress it, the more it replayed. But then his thoughts shifted 'unbiddenly' to the night before. The sex they had both had together. The feel of her skin, of her soft moans... of her innocence. That last part made him recoil internally. She had been a virgin. And he had been her first. For someone like him who was used to indulging in darker and way more sinful pleasures, the thought of taking someone so untouched left a bitter taste in
CHAPTER 143Usually he would wear black but not today. Today wasn't one of those days when he would dress to scare.Instead, he wore a soft grey sweater and faded jeans. His usual scowl was replaced with a calmer and softer look. He didn’t walk like death today, rather he walked like a stranger trying not to scare a cat.The room's back door creaked when he entered, with arms full of plush toys, bright snack bags, and a pink-and-purple doll set tucked beneath one elbow. He ordered his guards to stay outside. Today was for him and the girls. The faint scent of old crayons and spilled juice filled the living room and the little girls sat huddled on a couch, with eyes wide opened. They seemed to be playing but the moment they saw him, they scrambled backwards. Madelaine darted behind the couch and Adelaide crawled under the coffee table with her bunny.Lucifer set the things down slowly on the couch. “I’m not here to hurt you,” he said, with a very low and careful voice. “I brought you s
CHAPTER 142Katherine sat on the edge of the oversized velvet armchair, with her arms crossed tightly over her chest and her eyes fixed on the floor. There was a brief and suffocating silence like if one of them dared make a noise, Someone might end them.Giovanni poured two glasses of red wine. He took his time with it, swirling the liquid, and watching it settle.“You look good,” he muttered as his eyes lingered on her, taking in her curves in the red dress. “What’s the occasion?”“Don’t do that,” she said quietly, her voice tight. “Didn’t you say you needed to... talk to me?”“Oh? You do like hearing things don't you?” he whispered, with a smirk.Katherine swallowed. “Why... why am I here?”“Because I enjoy your company,” Giovanni said with a wide grin.Katherine’s jaw clenched, and she shook her head, her eyes darting toward the door. “I don’t want to stay. Please let me go.”“Not until I decide,” Giovanni said.Katherine’s breath hitched as she forced herself to meet his eyes, wh
CHAPTER 141The early morning air was chill as it occupied Asher’s lungs. Breathing in was hard and it made his insides numb. His feet hit the pavement in rhythm as he jogged, left, right, left. Almost as though he was trying to outrun the problem in his chest. The streets were empty and the sky still gray with dawn. He sighed deeply. He needed this.Ever since Lucifer’s visit… the blood, the screaming, the stench of gunpowder, it all haunted him. But worse than the pain in Lucifer's voice or his sister ’s sobs, was the realization that Katherine had never made it home.Lucifer hadn’t said it outright, but Asher could almost taste it in his words. Katherine was still missing and if she was alive, he couldn't tell.He jogged faster, trying to drown out the thoughts from within and his breath fogged in the cold air.The sound of the ringtone breaking the silence, interrupting his music and the vibration in his pocket stopped him dead in the tracks. He slowed and pulled out his phone.W
CHAPTER 140The sky was a thick shade of ash and the rain poured heavily against the rooftop of thel bungalow like it was trying to peel it off. Lightning darted across the sky and the thunder rumbled every now and then.Lucifer pushed his hair out his face and held his weapon tightly as he stood before the metal gate, with two of his guards flanking him with stone-cold faces and their guns already drawn.“Clear anything in the way but the family,” he ordered. “Yes, lord,” they said and aimed their guns. The dogs came first, walking up and down in distress. It was almost as though they could sense them. Three of them barked and charged which pissed Lucifer off. He had wanted a silent announcement but all thanks to the dogs for being the SOS.The dogs didn’t make it past the gate because Lucifer already raised his gun with a strong calculation and fired. Three bullets, three thuds and their barks rolled back into their throats before it was followed by a defeating silence. They forced
CHAPTER 139Katherine’s head ached. She couldn’t tell how long she’d been down there. The days bled together, and she couldn't tell the night from the day and all through, food was passed to her in a tray, slid underneath the dungeon gates. But she couldn't bring herself to eat it even though it smelt good— looked good. It was left untouched and taken out the next day.Every night she cried herself to sleep, calling Noah’s name until her throat was raw. Her stomach ached, but she refused to eat. It wasn’t hunger that gnawed at her, it was the grief and fear of something happening to her son. Each time the door opened, she screamed for Noah, hoping it was him, but it was one of those cruel guards. And each time, she was beaten for it.A week went by, and she was on the same spot, bruised, and weak and also thin. But she never stopped. She was cold. Hungry. Tired. The only thing keeping her sane was the thought of Noah. Of holding him again. And Lucifer.God… she hated herself for it, b
CHAPTER 138Katherine stepped out of the Landan house looking weary. She had no idea how long she was going to walk before she could get into town. Asher had given her a small map but she had seemed to forget how to use those things. It was a bit tricky but she had thanked him for his kind gesture. And she had to be quick else this was the time that the Landans usually returned and if they saw her on the road that could lead to other complications. The goodbye with the girls, the way Asher pressed that card into her hand, she couldn't stop thinking of it all. she held Noah tightly to her chest. She had no idea how heavy he had become. He was a big baby, warm but really had enough healthy weight. She draped the blanket over her shoulders tightly. Her back ached and her shoulders but she needed to get away from there first. She hadn't even gone a distance until a black van pulled up behind her. She paused in her tracks looking around for where to dash into but it was too late. She drop
CHAPTER 137Katherine’s fingers trembled as she folded the last piece of clothing into the worn, faded bag. Her vision blurred, hot tears clouded the shapes of everything in the room. She sniffled, biting her lip hard enough to hurt. Why did he have to show up? He shouldn't have even tried to. She was fine without him, was figuring life out by herself.A soft knock came at the door, and before she could answer, tiny feet padded in. Adelaide and Madelaine with their eyes round and curious, stood in the doorway. When they saw the tears streaming down Katherine’s face, they didn’t ask what was wrong rather they simply moved to her. The two little girls wrapped their arms around her legs, holding her tight.Katherine dropped to her knees and gathered them into her arms, pressing their heads against her shoulders as the sobs came harder.“Will I ever see you again?” Madelaine asked, her voice shaky and her eyes glossy with tears.Adelaide clung to her tighter. “I don’t want you to go…”Ka
CHAPTER 136Asher sat with Noah resting quietly in his arms, the child’s tiny face pressed against his chest. His little hands clutched at Asher’s shirt without even knowing why. Asher glanced down at him and for the first time really looked. Although both parents Dna had contributed to the boy, his eyes… they were just like his father’s,Lucifer Cain. The ruthless, famous man whose reputation made even hardened men lower their heads. So this was the person Katherine had been running from all this time. The deadly Mafia. He wanted to know how she ended up with him. He had called her wife, asked for his son, showed possession and Katherine was vulnerbale. So vulnerbale and broken. Even after he left, she was still sitting in silence and trembling.Asher swallowed hard as he tried to put his messy thoughts together. The first time he heard of Lucifer, he had wanted to look for a way to harm Ethan. To set him up and fuck him up. But he couldn't stand it. He couldn't stand them. They wer
CHAPTER 135The house was quiet, except for the soft sound of the old ceiling fan and the gentle scratch of a cloth as Katherine wiped down the table. The scent of cleaning solution hung in the air. She hummed as she cleaned, trying to relish the moment and clear her head, before the doorbell rang. Her hand froze mid-wipe, cloth pressed against the wood. The sound came again, persistently, like it needed attention. It was just her and Asher home. And no one came here.No one should. Her chest tightened. She didn't want to do this. Not again.Day after day, boxes arrived. Packages filled with things she never asked for — diapers, clothes, money and various self care she could never afford. She wanted to throw them out, burn them, scream at the sky, but she didn’t.Instead, she let them pile up in Asher’s room, turning his space into a cramped storeroom of her trash. The Landans’ patience had run thin and she couldn't blame them. Kind people had their limits. The bell rang again, caus
