I don’t have time to react. One second he’s there, the next he's gone. I hear growling and snarling a few feet away. I have to do something, but I’m frozen with fear.
What can I do? I don’t have a wolf to protect me. I need to run.
Before I can roll over, someone else yanks me out of the truck bed by my arm. I hit the ground hard with a startled yelp.
I’ve had enough junior warrior training to know if I can’t run, I need to defend myself until help arrives. I jump up as quickly as I can. As soon as my feet touch the ground, I throw a combo of punches, combined with a knee kick, into a monster’s bloody ribs.
The thing expertly blocks every shot. It’s as if it already knew I’d come out swinging, but it doesn’t hit back. Why isn’t it hitting me back?
“Leni, what the fuck do you think you’re doing?” Familiar eyes shine through the dripping blood with a snarl.
The monster grabs my wrist before I can pull back from a hard strike to its neck, and twists my hand painfully, bringing me down to my knees.
Wait. How did it know my name?
“OOwwwW!” I howl in pain and glare at the monster. “Let me go!”
It takes a beat for me to look past his bloody appearance. Those eyes. I know who this fucker is.
The coagulated blood he’s covered head to toe in isn’t blood at all. It’s the red mud of the Blood River. The natural iron deposits make the water blood red. It’s so potent that it turns the mud on the river banks blood red as well.
“Bronx?!” I gasp at my brother. “What am I doing? What the fuck are YOU doing?”
“They assigned us a shift as guards for this sector and we heard… noises.”
His scowl tells me everything I need to know. I feel my face flush. My brother caught me having sex with my boyfriend. How can I get out of this?!
“We?” Who else is he talking about?
I turn my attention to a playful growl behind Bronx and gasp. Bronx’s best friend, Milo Stone, has Marco in a headlock on the ground a few yards away.
Marco has his hands raised in surrender. Milo, a perpetual dunce, looks like he’s having a blast trying to choke Marco out. Marco outweighs Milo by at least fifty pounds, but Clash won’t let him attack his Beta Scion.
“It’s time to go home, Leni.” Bronx impatiently secures the blanket from the truck around my body and tugs on my arm again, bringing me back to standing.
“No! Let Marco go and leave us alone!” My embarrassment fades, replaced by anger. “Milo! Get off of him!”
I pull my arm away from Bronx and jut my chin out. My brother intimidates most people. Not me though. He can kiss my ass. “Why are you harassing us? Don’t you have better shit to do?”
“Saving my little sister’s dignity hardly counts as harassment, Leni.” He snarls and wipes his hands over his face to clear mud from his eyes. “You don’t even know if he’s your mate.”
My jaw drops. “You’ve got to be fucking kidding me, Bronx! My DIGNITY is none of your damn business!”
“Well, Dad is on his way. He’ll probably disagree with you.” Bronx folds his muddy arms over himself.
“YOU MINDLINKED DAD! You’re an asshole, Bronx. Grade A, capital oh, asshole.” I shove him, but I may as well have hit a brick wall. I’m five feet ten inches tall, but Bronx is six foot six inches. He has well over a hundred pounds on me.
“Leni, knock it off. We’ll deal with Sanchez. It’s time for you to go home.”
“Fuck off, Bronx.” I rush over to Milo. He's laughing like a damn hyena at Marco, who is struggling to break free of the choke hold before he passes out. I pull on Milo’s arm, getting leverage with my foot against his ribs. “Milo, let Marco go! NOW!”
Milo slides off Marco’s back and leans back on his hands casually, as if he wasn’t trying to murder my boyfriend for the fun of it two seconds ago. He keeps his leg draped over Marco’s back and bobs his foot in the air like he’s bored.
“Leni, why are you always so damn serious?” He smirks at me. “We were just fucking around. Marco can take a joke. Can’t ya, big guy? Nothin’ wrong with gettin’ your dick wet now and then. Right?”
Marco groans and coughs, grabbing his throat as he sucks in fresh air. There’s conflict in his eyes. If Milo wasn’t a future ranked member of our pack, he would already be dead.
Have you ever wanted to punch someone in the face? No warning, no explanation, or justification needed. Just haul off and throw your full weight into it? Enough to feel the satisfaction of bones crunching under your fist? That’s how I feel right now.
My wolf’s not awake yet. There’s no one to stop me. I step toward Milo, but Marco climbs onto one knee and grabs my hip through the blanket. “Leni, don’t. Let’s just leave.”
“Go fuck around somewhere else, Milo.” I help Marco off the ground and turn for the truck, but it’s too late. I can already hear the heavy paws of Dad’s wolf. “Shit! Marco, come on!”
“Why? You in a hurry, Leni? Mace is gonna be here any second. I bet he’d hate to miss out on seeing ya.” Milo wags his finger at me with an annoying grin.
I feel myself go pale as Dad’s wolf charges out of the woods into the clearing. I take a step back, but I can’t run. He would catch me in three strides.
“Mace, this isn’t what it looks like. Bronx has it wrong. I swear. Nothing happened.”
“Leni-” Marco steps forward, putting himself between me and Dad’s giant gray wolf.
Mace lowers his head with a rumbling growl, making all of us bow and show him our necks in submission. My knees shake under the blanket when I hear him shifting into human form.
“Alpha, sir, it’s not her fault. I br-”
“Shut it, Sanchez. Bronx, Milo, get him out of here.” Dad’s gruff voice booms. “Lieutenant Fortier is at the bottom of the mountain waiting for you.”
I don’t dare lift my head up. Dad’s anger hits me like a tidal wave, warning me to be still.
Marco’s bare feet walk away silently, except for the crunching of twigs below him. The sounds of people shifting to wolf form fill my ears. I swallow hard when I hear them take off down the mountain. The silence in the space between my father and me could hold galaxies.
My mind races so fast it feels like it might short circuit. What if I never see Marco again? My heart constricts. Nine months. What if he never makes it back? I’ll never forgive my brother for this. Never.
“Get in the truck.” Dad’s tone is deadly calm. He grabs Marco’s shorts out of the bed of the truck and puts them on, then opens the passenger door and waits for me to move.
I finally look up at him. “Dad, I-”
“Get. In. NOW!”
Shit.
I climb into the passenger seat and tighten the blanket around my body, trying to make myself as small as possible.
Dad slams the door so hard it makes me jump. I keep my head down, but flick my eyes up. He stomps in front of the truck and gets in the driver’s side, slamming his door closed. I can feel his anger when he revs the engine before he pulls out of the makeshift parking spot, down the unpaved path.
Disappointing my father is one of the worst things I can think of, yet here I am. If I open my mouth right now, I would choke on the tension in the air. It would be less painful if he just stabbed me through the heart.
After an uncomfortable minute of silence, I finally speak. Otherwise, it’s going to be a excruciating twenty minutes back to the packhouse.
“I’m sorry, Dad.” My voice sounds tiny under the noise of the engine. He doesn’t even blink. I shift uncomfortably in the seat and clear my throat. Maybe he didn’t hear me. “Dad, I said I’m sorry. Please say something.”
He doesn’t look at me, but he rubs his hand over his face and half snorts, half growls through his nose. The truck stops short, making me throw my hands out to catch myself. Dad puts it in park and gets out. I watch him stomp to the passenger side door and swing it open.
He points into the woods. “Out.”
“Out?” I look behind him into the dark, thick woods suspiciously. “Here?”
He puts his hands on his hips and leans on the edge of the door, raising his eyebrows dangerously. “Would you like me to MAKE you get out?”
“No, Sir.” I lower my head and slide off of the seat.
As soon as my feet touch the ground, Dad grabs my upper arm and drags me down a non-existent path into the thickest part of the woods. He pushes me down onto a large, flat boulder. “Sit.”
I let myself fall onto the rock and look at him with a furrowed brow. He has never grabbed me like that. I get that he’s mad, but he’s making a huge deal out of this. He paces for a moment, then fixes his glare on me. His stare is full of daggers, making me turn my eyes down.
“Is there any chance that you’re pregnant?”
“Dad!”“Don’t ‘Dad’ me. You reek of sex, Leni. I don’t smell blood, so I’m going to assume it isn’t your first time. Is there any chance you’re pregnant? Be honest.”“No.” I say with a defiant growl.“Sass me again and it may be the last thing you do, Lenora Jane Mason.”No one calls me by my real name. Everyone calls me Leni. Dad has only used my FULL name twice in my life before. Once when I was ten and I told Bronx I hated him and once when I skipped school to go to the mall with Ashley after she got her driver’s license. I shrink back and soften my tone. “Dad, I’m not pregnant. W-we’re careful.”“I need you to be one hundred percent certain, Lenora.” He says with anger and disappointment mixed in his voice.I’m not sure what kind of answer he’s looking for more than a simple ‘no’. How detailed am I supposed to get? The more I say, the more likely he’s going to shift and go murder Marco before Bronx gets him to the packhouse. “A hundred percent certain? We use protection every ti
“Leni? It’s Ashley. Can I come in?” The soft knock on my bedroom door is unwelcome. Ashley isn’t the one I’m angry at, though. I roll over, staring at the door. Should I answer her? I guess I should. She knows I’m in here. “Come on, nerd. I brought you luu-unnnch… it’s a ham sandwich with diii-jjjoooon… on a crois-aaannnt.” Her voice gets higher pitched with a sing-song tone. “Carly snagged some jalapeno kettle chips, tooooo!” I can’t help but smile. Ashley loves making people happy. Of course, she would bring my favorite food. The fact that she got our friend Carly involved makes it that much more her style. “Come in, Ash.” I sit up and rub my eyes. They still feel puffy. My nose is completely stuffed and my throat is raw. Mom didn’t say a word to me when Dad dragged me into the apartment. She just stood by my bedroom with her arms crossed, glaring at me until I closed the door. She and Dad had a hushed conversation about what happened, and he left again. I didn’t really sleep a
— Flashback— “All of our intel shows they’re gathering traction with the propaganda they are feeding the locals in Eastern European villages. Larger packs are being influenced as well. We have to act now or war is imminent.” Daddy walks back and forth. He sounds angry. “Mama, why’s Daddy mad?” I pull on her shirt, but she doesn’t look at me. “Mike, you sent for the kids?” Mama interrupts him. He stops talking and gives Mama lovey dovey eyes. That’s what my big brother calls it. I bet if those old men weren’t here, Daddy would give Mama a big kiss. Then Bronx and I would say EEEWWWW! Then Daddy’s wolf would chase us away. “Gentlemen, you all know my Luna Regent, Sandy. Most of you have met my son Bronx, but only a few have met my daughter Lenora.” Daddy picks me up and kisses my cheek. I try to show him the picture I drawed of me and Mace, but he doesn’t look. “Say hello to the Elder Council, my sweet girl.” “Daddy! Loooook!” I hold my picture up higher. I don’t want to say hell
“Leni, time to wake up.” Mom rubs circles on my back through the covers. “Happy birthday, honey. I didn’t get to speak to you last night before Saint took you home. How do you feel?” “Sore.” I groan into my pillow. “That can happen after your first shift.” She tugs playfully on my ponytail. I hate when she tries to pretend everything is hunky dory when it’s not. She and Dad always preach telling the truth, but the last couple of days have shown me they hide the truth more than anyone I know. “Your wolf will heal you. I saw how beautiful her white and tan coat was when you shifted. What’s her name?” “Her name is Justice.” I lift my head and squint in the bright room. “What about my back?” “Ahh, what a wonderful name.” Mom quips, then pauses. “What about your back? What happened?” “Bronx pushed me and I hurt my tailbone yesterday. It still hurts.” “Well, I’m sure whatever happened with your brother was an accident.” She dismisses the incident. “It doesn’t matter if it was an ac
Milo’s eyes flash to black and Ghost growls dangerously. “Mate.” I suddenly feel like prey. I take a slow step back from the menacing wolf. Can I get in my room fast enough to close the door? As if he was reading my mind, he grabs my arm and yanks me to his chest. His razor-sharp claws grow out of Milo’s fingernails and dig painfully into my arm. He buries his nose into the crook of my neck, breathing in my scent. My feet are glued to the spot, but I want to run away. At the same time, I feel like I want to stay here with him. I want to be closer to him. What am I talking about? Marco Sanchez is supposed to be my mate. I hate Milo Stone and he's currently assaulting me! “MILO, STOP!” I cry out and push on his chest. “LET ME GO!” “Mmm.” Justice coos. “He’s so romantic.” “Justice, it’s not ROMANTIC! He’s ATTACKING ME! Do something!” I scream at her. “Say ‘mate’. He’ll calm down.” She muses, as if she is completely unaware that blood is pouring out of my arm. “You need to acc
Mom helps me into my room and lays me on my bed. I don’t think I could manage to do anything else, even if they ordered me to.I hear the howls of the pack saluting the warriors as they leave. I try to howl with them, but I can’t stop crying. I clutch my aching heart and whisper a prayer to the Moon Goddess to forgive me and to send my mate back safely.Ashley appears in front of my face. She’s even more of a mess than she was earlier.I lift the covers and she joins me, back in the faux safety of my duvet fortress. Justice and Zinnia sulk along with us. We stop pretending like we’re going to be okay and cry ourselves to sleep. Everyone leaves us alone. Someone knocks on the door around dinnertime. They slide a tray of food into the room, but don’t come inside. Ashley crawls out of bed and takes a few bites, then abandons it. She comes back to bed so we can console each other until we cry ourselves back to sleep.Justice wakes me up when Dad comes in the middle of the night. He kisses
“Lenora, this brownie is delicious. Are you sure you don’t want a bite?” Ashley mumbles with her mouth still full.“Bitch, you’re worried about a brownie right now?” I push open the garage access door. “I’m wondering how we’re going to figure out where Milo’s car is?”I have no clue where to begin because the pack garage is massive. Three levels are the entire footprint of the packhouse.“You mean YOUR car? He gave it to you as a gift.” She slows down and looks up and down the aisles. “What would he have bought you for your birthday if you weren’t mates?”“He wouldn’t have got me anything. I don’t think he even knows when my birthday is.” I shrug. “Before today, I’m sure I was just Bronx’s little sister. I’ve only ever thought of him as Bronx’s obnoxious friend.”“Let’s seeeee…” Ashley turns in a circle while she walks. “His parents are Betas, so it makes sense for it to be on the first floor? The second floor only has pack fleet cars. Then again, he was away for six months and he’s al
“ASHLEY! Hold on!” I grip the wheel tighter and swerve into the wrong lane to avoid the collision. There’s too much traffic. A minivan is going to hit us head on. I jerk back too soon. The front corner of the third police car hits Ashley’s door. Her window shatters into a million pieces. She screams and puts her arms up to protect her head. We bounce off the front of the cruiser and hit the side of the minivan. “Don’t stop, Lenora!” Justice commands. “Keep going!” I press my back into the seat and turn the wheel until I’m able to straighten out the car. When I have control again, I look in the rearview mirror. The two police cars that were chasing us are still close behind me. “Shit shit shit!” I look forward, focusing on not hitting any more cars. “Ashley, are you okay?” “I think so?” She looks up with blood trickling down her face. “Lenora? What happened? Are you okay?” Dad asks. “Dad, another police car just hit us! And I-I hit a car. I don’t know if they’re okay. What shou
“Good Morning, Beta.” Sondi Eklund pokes her head into my office. “Would you be able to review these retirement package updates I’m proposing to the Alpha?”I look up from my spreadsheet and try to smile at her. “Of course, Sondi. Please come in.”“I already highlighted the sections in question.” Sondi comes in with her staccato, bird-like movements. “Oh, Beta Lenora, are you ill? Forgive me if I’m overstepping, but you look exhausted.”“I’m alright, Sondi. Being a new mom is exhausting.” I’m careful not to go into too much detail. Sondi and Scott still haven’t found their daughter. I don’t want to be insensitive. I quickly change the subject. “That and I feel like I’m running in circles trying to decipher some of the information on this spreadsheet. They’re supposed to be client names, but I can’t figure out how they’re coded.”“Would you like a fresh set of eyes?” She looks eternally hopeful. “I’m happy to help.”“Um, sure.” I turn the laptop to her. “I’ll look at these updates whil
“Kaaas?! Are you sure you and Codi will be okay?” I yell into the living room. “I can call the daycare and see if they have someone who can come up.”“No, we’re fine.” Kas’s voice sounds strangled.Milo peeks his head into the living room and pulls back quickly. He doubles over in a silent laugh, pointing to the living room. I look out to see Codi had a handful of Kas’s hair in a death grip. Kas’s mouth is open in a restrained cry of pain, trying to untangle the chubby fingers from her sparkly locks of hair. I nudge Milo who’s on the floor in tears with his hand over his mouth. “Knock it off, Milo. She’s trying her best.” I pull him off the floor. “Kas, give her the rattle that’s on the coffee table. The one that looks like a tiger's face. She’ll let go in a heartbeat.”After a pause, Kas calls back. “Oh my Goddess, it worked! Thank you!”“Okay. We won’t be gone long. Mindlink if you need ANYTHING.” I walk to the living room and kiss Codi on her chubby cheek, then kiss Kas on her for
“And this is the Alpha’s private archival library.” I hold up a slip of paper for Musu to read. “Memorize this number. It’s your personal access code and don’t share it. Understand?”“Yes, Beta.” She stares at the paper. “I got it.”“Good.” I punch in my code and let the door slide open. I step inside, motioning for Musu to follow. She steps in and looks around in awe.“The Goddess has truly blessed our Alpha.” She takes a few more steps trying to take in the library's beauty. “I’ve never seen a private collection this large.”“Well, he’s been collecting them since he was a child, and it has proved useful.” I clasp my hands behind my back and look around, then point to a book on a pedestal covered with a glass case. The page is open to the painting of The Moon Goddess with the Menae. “This is how we found out Kas is a goddess.”Musu looks down on the image and chuckles. “Is it inappropriate to say The Moon Goddess and Endymion were more like rabbits than wolves?”Justice lets out a wh
Lenora’s POV“Delilah, if anyone asks, your family is from France. You went to culinary school there. That’s how you met James. Bronx gifted Kas private lessons. James was a security guard for Kas while she attended the school. You’re twenty-three-”“But, no, Carly Ann Miller, I am one hundred and-”“You. Are. Twenty-THREE. Delilah.” Ashley interrupts. “No arguing.”“You expect me to just LIE?!” Delilah holds her hands to her chest and looks mortified at the thought.“Yes.” Ashley, Carly, and I all say in unison.Delilah falls back in her seat, distraught.“It’s not that we want you to be dishonest, Delilah.” Ashley softens her tone. “It’s a matter of self preservation. For all of us. You included. Whatever technique you’ve used in the past to deflect attention won’t cut it anymore. You and Kas are going to be approached by paparazzi all the time now. They need to believe you’re human. We’ve given both of you believable, respectable human profiles. The fewer people trying to dig into
“Alright, Big Guy.” I toss the plastic gun on the arcade game. “You win. I’ll never beat you at Duck Hunt. I’m out of cash to feed the machine anyway.”“I mean, you tried. I’ll give you some props, man.” Marco blows into the barrel of the plastic gun and looks at his watch. “It’s been two hours. That’s gotta be a good sign. Right? Musu woulda called me if Lenora chased her out.”“Yeah.” I pout my lip. “No mindlinks either. Down your beer. Let’s check on them.”Marco raises his pint glass and chugs the remaining beer. “Rita! Thanks, darlin’!” I hold up more than enough cash for our tab and toss it on the table. She gives me a thumbs up from across the restaurant. “Don’t be strangers!”“Ah man, that fresh air.” Marco takes a deep breath when we step outside. “Nothing beats summer in Montana except maybe spring in the Coven’s realm.”“Did you hear that?” Ghost gasps, suddenly at attention.“Huh? Hear what?” I shorten my stride and look around.“A warbler.”“Okay… and?”“They leave afte
There’s a quiet knock on my office door. Instinctively, I look down at Codi. She’s still fast asleep. I set down the report explaining there were absolutely zero useful bits of information on Randall’s tape recorder other than rambling about a trip to Portland to see a warehouse or something. We still haven’t been able to determine the identities of the girls in the photos other than Evie. There was no rhyme or reason to the codes associated with each one. The unusual names don’t exist anywhere either. The team is still looking into it, but I’m not very hopeful. Randall sneaks under the radar on everything.“Come in.” I say in a hoarse whisper.Milo peeks his head in with a huge smile on his face. I put a finger to my lips and point to the travel bassinet next to my desk. He tiptoes in and silently closes the door behind him.“Hey Sugar.” Milo whispers. “Is this a bad time? Are you busy?”“I always have a minute for you, Milo.” I blush when he hands me a bouquet of wildflowers. “They’
“Tyree, have you finished the sweep of Randall’s suite?” Milo paces behind his desk.“Just about Beta.” Tyree’s voice comes through the speakerphone. “He took most of his stuff, but there were a few things left on the kitchenette counter. A folder with some paperwork, an envelope, like one of those ones you mail photos in. Ya know? Feels like there’s something inside. And a voice recorder.”“A voice recorder?” Milo asks, confused.“Yeah. I don’t want to open anything or push play in case it’s booby trapped.” Tyree replies. “Fool me once.”“Good call. Bring everything to my office.” Milo pushes his finger into the desk. “I’ll get a forensics team to take it off our hands.”“Yes, Beta.”“Don’t let anyone in that room until they get a deeper sweep.”“Yes, Beta. Marco will stand guard. I’ll be up in ten minutes.” Tyree confirms and hangs up.“Milo, what do you think he was up to?” I bounce Codi gently in my arms. It’s not because she needs it. I have too much nervous energy to hold still.
“An apartment in Paris? Who would have ever pegged your brother as a hopeless romantic?” Mom swipes through images of the apartment Bronx bought for Kas as a wedding present. “It’s absolutely gorgeous!”“Yep. She needs to sign some paperwork, but I don’t think she understands enough about real est-” I bite my lip and point at Dad who’s making wolf faces at Codi on the other end of the sofa. Mace tests out a growl to see if it will startle her. She makes a sound that could be a growl back at him.“So sweet.” Mom places a hand on her heart. “Meeting codi is all he’s talked about since we got the news that you were pregnant. So what's next? Have you thought about a little brother for Codi, maybe?”My heart squeezes. “Justice, what do I say?”“As much of the truth as you can.” She sounds unsettled. “We don’t really know anymore. Do we?”“You know how hard it was for me to get pregnant, Mom. Let alone survive Codi’s pregnancy. We haven’t really talked about having more yet. If the Goddess
It’s been two days. Kas has isolated herself in her apartment, still convinced that she needs to hide herself away. I brought Codi up so she could snuggle with her niece in hopes it would lift her spirits. I let her take Codi to the bedroom while I go talk to Marco.“Hey, Beta. Everything okay?” He salutes me.“She’s not handling it well. Maybe I should invite her to go to the meadow?”“I wasn’t talkin’ about the Luna.” He lowers his chin. “You been avoiding me?”I immediately feel my face flush. “Wh-what? I-”“Sorry. I didn’t mean to sound like that. I know you’re busy with your pup.” His tone softens. “I need to stay in my lane.”“I mean, I-I guess I kinda thought, um, your mate wouldn’t want me talking to you.” I confess. “So… yeah. I guess I have been avoiding you?”“Ah, Leni, come on. I’m fuckin with you… kinda.” He looks sheepish. “Me and Musu was talking about our ranked members. I didn’t tell her about US, but I told her you and me grew up together and that we still close frie
