Four weeks were over in the blink of an eye and Iris sat in front of the vanity with dead eyes staring back at her as people rushed around the mansion trying to get her ready for the wedding she would rather not attend.
Today was her wedding but she would rather be anywhere else than here. She knew that a lot of people would kill to be in her position but she would pay a hefty sum to have those girls take her place in a heartbeat if she could. She might be getting married to the most eligible bachelor in the country but to her, it was just a move from one prison to another.
Iris had to pinch herself countless times to make sure she wasn’t in a dream where she was going to get married to Luca Rutherford. The same man she had not set eyes on since their meeting in the drawing room a month ago.
His mother, however, checked in on her constantly and that was the reason Helen and her mother were unable to do anything to her because Evelyn questioned every new mark she saw on her body. Because of that, Stephen had forbidden them from touching or coming close to her. He would not spoil his last chance of getting the Rutherfords to invest in his media house.
“You would look so beautiful in this dress” One of the stylists responsible for getting Iris dressed beamed.
Iris studied the custom-made wedding dress that was sewn just for her by the best wedding dress designer in the country. Helen should have been wearing that dress. Helen should be the one getting pampered and not her.
“Are you still thinking about how you don’t deserve this?” Her friend, Alanna asked, making her turn her attention from the dress to the girl sitting giddily by her side.
“I know I don’t. It’s all meant for Helen. I’m just sitting here hoping Madam Evelyn would come and say the wedding will continue as planned with Helen as the bride”
Alanna stared at Iris with an annoyed expression. “You deserve it, okay. They may have spent years treating you like shit but you are a Taylor”
“An illegitimate one”
“But one nonetheless. This is the heavens rewarding you for all the sufferings you had to go through. Take this second chance to start over”
“I don’t think it’s a chance to start over. Helen cheated on him. He would see me as the same. To him, I’m just another gold digger and cheater. He believes I was aiding Helen in cheating on him”
“But you weren’t and you need to convince him that you didn’t know she was cheating on him”
“Even if I tell him countless times that I didn’t know, it would never change how he sees me as a greedy person”
“Then show him you aren’t one. You are the most amazing, caring and loving person I’ve ever met and I doubt your husband would think otherwise after getting to know you”
“If he gives me a chance”
Alanna smiled and took Iris's hand and gave him a small tug. “He has to. Make him give you a chance.”
For a single moment, Iris allowed herself to dream of what it would be like if Luca really loved her. She bet she would be the opposite of how she felt now. She would be nervous and excited at the same time to get to the altar, eager to tie the knot and escape from this prison she had been trapped in since she was a child.
A knock on the door made her sit up straight and she told the person to come in. The door opened and the two people she doesn’t want to see walked in. They had avoided her throughout the month and she was hoping she didn’t have to see them until it was time for the wedding.
“Excuse us, we will like to have a word with the bride in private” Vera snapped.
Iris’s eyes flew to Alanna in panic but there was nothing she could do. Alanna squeezed her shoulders gently before leaving the room with the others.
Iris felt her heart drop to the pit of her stomach as she stared wide-eyed at Vera and Helen. She squirmed under their gaze as they examined her from head to toe with disgust apparent on their face.
“How do you feel about wearing the dress that was supposed to be mine? Do you feel victorious?” Helen hissed before walking over to the dress hanging on the wall and running her hands on it. There was envy heavy on her face but she quickly covered it with a snarl.
“I’m not happy to be doing this” Iris mumbled and she cussed her treacherous eyes for stinging.
“You better watch out, Iris. Don’t think I will let you take Luca from me. I promise you that I will make him throw you out before you even have a chance to enjoy your honeymoon” She spat and Iris's eyes widened in fear.
“What do you mean?” she stuttered in fear. She knew there was no way those two would sit back and let her get away with this.
“It means I am going to get him back no matter what it costs me. I am the only one fit to be a Rutherford and not you” She spat.
“Your mother took my husband and I will never let you take my daughter’s too” Vera vowed and the both of them stormed out of the room, leaving a trembling Iris alone.
Alanna rushed into the room first and caught Iris before she could slump to the floor.
“Don’t listen to anything they say. They are just bitter that you got to marry someone as powerful as Luca. It isn’t your fault that she couldn’t keep her legs closed and slept with his cousin.”
“She said she was going to make him throw me out” Iris said shakily.
“That slut.” Alanna hissed. “She can’t do anything. She is all bark and no bite. Come on, let’s get you into your dress. The ceremony will be starting soon”
Iris stood there like a statue as they helped her with her wedding dress and made the finishing touches on her. It was happening and nothing had changed. She was really going to be getting married.
Iris was ushered outside the mansion alongside a bridal train filled with girls she had never seen in her entire life. The only person she knew was Alanna, her chief bridesmaid. Iris didn’t dare to ask where they had gotten ten girls to pretend like they were her friends.
Iris gasped when she saw a limousine sitting majestically at the house’s entrance. She had never been in one before since she was born. The car was so sleek and expensive, she was reluctant to enter but Alanna had nudged her forward and she sat in the most comfortable seats she had ever seen in her life.
“You can’t keep that stricken look on your face once we arrive at the chapel” Alanna warned. “There are going to be media stations from all over the world to broadcast the wedding and the last thing you show them is that you are being forced to do this”
“But I am being forced against my will. I don’t want to do this” Iris whispered harshly even though it was just her and Alanna in the car. The rest bridesmaid was in another vehicle behind them.
“Iris” Alanna sighed. “I know you are scared but don’t you prefer getting married than staying here as a slave for the rest of your life? This is your golden ticket to escape the clutches of Vera and Helen. You don’t know how Luca would treat you but I can guarantee that it will be much better than this place. In the worst-case scenario, you would be ignored and he may cheat but isn’t that better than insults, shoves and constant humiliation?”
“None is better. Being cheated on and hated by your husband is just the same as what I’m facing”
Alanna groaned in frustration. “You are like a wall that I can’t get through to. There is a fifty per cent possibility that everything will be fine. Stop being so negative”
Iris didn’t say anything in return and instead turned her head so she was looking out the window. She was only allowed out of the house a selected number of times so watching the city pass by in a blur, she felt like a stranger in her own city.
Soon they arrived at the chapel and Alanna helped Iris exit the car with two other bridesmaids. They escorted her to the entrance where her father, Stephen was waiting with a grim expression.
Stephen had never acknowledged her as his daughter and she wasn’t even allowed to use his last name but last week, they had gone to family affairs and officially changed her name to a Taylor and also registered her under the family much to the annoyance of Vera and Helen.
The bridesmaid marched into the hall and soon, the MC was announcing the entrance of the bride. Iris's stomach tightened into knots and she shakily took the hand her father unwillingly held out.
The doors opened and they began the short but long trek down the aisle. Iris kept her gaze on the floor, admiring the rose petals that had been used to decorate her way by the flower girls. She was unable to meet the eyes of anyone, afraid of the viciousness she might see.
“Raise your head” Stephen gritted out quietly and she looked up. She saw Evelyn beaming and returned the smile shakily. Helen had a snarl on her face as well so she quickly turned away and faced the altar where he husband to be stood with the same stoic expression he had that day.
Never in a million years did Iris think she would be walking down the aisle in a wedding dress that cost more than her entire life spendings, getting married to one of the richest men alive who may or may not hate her.
Luca looked good and it forced a sense of pride in Iris. With his custom suit that screamed money, he was a sight to behold.
Stephen placed her hands into Luca’s waiting hand before stepping back and going to his seat. Iris was shaking and Luca felt it. He glared at her before turning to the priest to begin the ceremony.
The priest asked them to exchange rings and Iris froze. With shaky hands, she placed the ring on Luca and watched as he did the same. The priest didn’t bother to ask if anyone was against the union and Iris suspected it was the work of Evelyn or her father.
“You may now kiss the bride” The official said and Iris froze like a deer caught by headlights.
Luca took a step towards her and cupped her face, gently, which surprised her. Iris believed it was going to be a chaste kiss, meant to please the crowd but she was so wrong.
Luca yanked her to his chest and crashed his lips on her. He kissed her fiercely and she couldn’t stop the moans that escaped her mouth.
Luca pulled away from his breathless wife with a smirk when he saw her breathing hard and her lipstick smudged. He reached out to wipe the smudge away and she flinched back from his touch.
“May I present to you, Mr and Mrs Rutherford” The priest announced and they turned to face the crowd.
Evelyn Rutherford had a smile of satisfaction, same with Stephen because now he could get the money promised to him. Vera and Helen had fumes coming out from their ears as they glared at the couple with such hostility.
Luca grabbed Iris’s hand and pulled her towards the awaiting audience.
“Come on, the quicker we get the formalities over with, the quicker I can get out of here”
Iris mood dampened because his words were a cold reminder that he didn’t want her as his wife but she agreed with him. She wanted to also leave this place and go far away from the angry gazes of the people in the crowd.
Maybe Luca’s torture would be better than the one she was used to.
Iris and Luca sat on a high platform watching their guests dance to the classical tune played by one of the finest orchestras in the country. Iris was grateful for the backup wedding dress which was a lot more simple but just as expensive as the one she wore for the wedding.Iris risked a glance in her husband’s direction and saw he was not pleased and had an expression that did not fail to hide that he would rather be somewhere else than be stuck here. Iris wanted to tell him they shared the same thoughts but she knew he would not appreciate her opinion so she kept her thoughts to herself. They were both waiting for their turn to share their first dance which Iris was not looking forward to and it’s not because she was a bad dancer because it was the other way around. Mrs Evelyn had hired the best dance instructor to polish her dance skills to perfection but she was worried about getting that close to Luca again. The kiss they shared still had her floored and her head was still light
Iris pressed her frame to the door so she could stay as far as possible from the man whom she was bound to for life. When they got off the plane, they were welcomed by a longer fleet of cars with more security men than Luca had back at home. This confirmed he had a stronger hold here in London. As she sat in the car, she couldn’t help the constant glances she threw in Luca’s direction. She barely knew him but she couldn’t deny the spark of attraction she felt for him even though she knew it was just for his good looks since the man hadn’t made any effort to treat her well. She wished he would look at her so she could have another glance into his dark eyes which seemed to pull her in.Iris glanced outside the windows when she noticed they were pulling into a large gated area. The large gates were so intimidating that if she wasn’t in the car, she would never dare to come close to it. A soft gasp escaped her lips as she took in the estate that lay behind the tall gates. It looked like a
Iris spent the whole day alone and when she was called to have dinner, she sat on the long table filled with different kinds of food both familiar and unfamiliar. Without her husband or anyone seated at the table, she had the loneliest dinner of her entire life. “Even back at home, I had Alanna to talk to.” She whispered as she gulped the food down, not caring about how ridiculous she might look.Loren stood quietly, merging herself to the wall. Iris had offered her to sit and have dinner and the girl’s face drained of colour as though Iris was asking her to cut off her finger. Footsteps approaching drew her attention from the plate in front of her to see James walking towards her with a parcel in his hand. He dropped the package on the table and Iris saw it was a brand new phone and judging from the packaging, it was a very expensive one. “Mr Luca wants you to have this since he noticed you didn’t have one. His contacts along with his mother and every other contact you would need
Iris groaned and forced her eyes open as streaks of sunlight assaulted her vision. She turned away from the window and closed her eyes again but movements in her room had her sitting up. She saw Berta, Loren and some other ladies who she was unfamiliar with at the foot of her bed and it startled her into a sitting position. “Good morning, Miss Iris. Please allow us to prepare you for the day” Berta greeted with a smile and irritation crept up Iris's spine but she tried to hide it by schooling her face to show how confused she was at the large amount of unknown people in her room. “What?” She asked groggily, reaching up to rub her eyes to clear the sleep that was still trying to pull her back to bed. “You have your first etiquette lesson this morning, after which you need to go shopping for some clothes. Mr Luca has instructed we fill your wardrobe with items that would be needed for all sorts of occasions from casual to formal” Berta explained with a wide smile. She gestured to Lore
Mental fatigue. That’s what Iris was feeling as she sat quietly on the ginormous dining table once again, only this time Luca was present. She tried to smoothen out her expression and hide how anxious she was as she stole glances at him. It’s been five days since they got married and four since she arrived in London and yet this was the first time they were having a meal together even though Iris wouldn’t call it that since they haven’t spoken a word to each other and she would rather be locked up in her room than sit here in this suffocating silence.Even the staff could feel how uncomfortable she was because they kept shuffling their feet and it was getting irritating. One glare from Luca across the room had them correcting their postures fast.Luca pushed his plate back and leaned back in his chair to study her and Iris couldn’t help but squirm under his scrutinizing gaze. “How are you settling in?”The question came as a surprise and she didn’t know what or how to answer him. She
Iris has had enough and she could no longer take it anymore. It’s been three weeks since she became Luca’s wife and she was bored. Luca had been avoiding her, there was nothing for her to do and no one to talk to except Loren and Berta since Rebecca didn’t come around anymore. While Berta and Loren kept her company sometimes, it didn’t help to slow down how irritated she had become from staying alone and even the regular phone calls with Alanna were no longer enough to stop her from going crazy which was why she was on a mission. As she went down the stairs to look for Berta to ask for help in locating Luca’s bedroom in this fucking giant house, she couldn't help but become more annoyed that it’s been a month since she got married and she had no idea which bedroom her husband slept in.She found Berta and Loren in the drawing room going through a list. Loren was already on her feet and by Iris’ side when she saw the storm hovering over her head.“What’s wrong, Miss Iris?” Loren asked
Luca watched his wife flee the room with distaste in his mouth. She had successfully added more vinegar to his already sour mood.He was woken up this morning by a call from his assistant telling him that the penthouse of the hotel they launched last month in the States already had some malfunctions with the special access elevator and some electrical works were faulty. To make him more pissed, Dom had informed him that the contractor claimed he used the materials the funds he was given weren't enough for and Luca knew it was all bullshit so he had instructed Dom to make sure the stupid old hag was in his office when he found out the man was in London hoping to score another contract with a big company here in London.Imagine his annoyance when he exited the bathroom after spending his time thinking of all the ways to deal with the little maggot to see his new bride snooping around his room and touching his things as though she belonged in his life. The fucking audacity she had.He di
Iris sat on the soft cushion beside the window in her room while her eyes scanned the vast garden beneath her. It used to be her favourite view when she moved here and it still was. It was the perfect scenery to get lost in your head like she wanted to do now. After she left Luca’s room, she had raced to her room as fast as her legs could carry her but it wasn’t enough to hide the tears that had managed to escape before Loren and Berta could see it since they were standing by the stairs, waiting for her.She should have listened to their warning that Luca was not in a good mood and waited till later but she doubted that would have done anything major to remove the hatred he had for her. It’s been hours since it happened and she had yet to eat anything but she still didn’t want to eat anything even though her stomach had been growling in protest.“I shouldn’t have gone” she whispered as misery wrapped itself around her. Luca hadn’t said much to her but his words cut her deeply every ti
Iris was still on her bed when she heard the bedroom door open. She didn't want to wake up yet because it was her birthday and she wanted to sleep in for once while Luca did what he did best, spoiling their children. They had three kids now. Autumn was seven now and was the exact copy of her mother. Sometimes, Iris would find herself lost in her thoughts, staring at her until she was called. Their boys, Axel and Kai were 4 and 1 respectively and perfect carbon copies of their father. Iris felt like a stranger in their house and even Autumn behaved just like Luca, it was scary sometimes. "Princess?" Luca called, climbing onto the bed. She stretched and felt her bones crack before turning to see him. A smile graced her face when she saw their youngest in his arms. Kai's eyes widened and a smile wider than Iris's own graced his face and he giggled while stretching his arms for her so she could take him. She pulled herself up and reached out to take him, wincing when his fingers cur
Iris was so comfortable laying on Luca’s chest while his breath fanned her face and his hands traced meaningless patterns on her back which made her shiver every two seconds. She didn’t want to move because that was why bliss and perfection were to her. Luca had fucked her into oblivion that even when she woke up, her legs were still shaking even though she had yet to stand up.She didn’t hate it though. It was the best way for her to wake up but Luca had other plans. He said he had something she needed to see so they couldn’t stay in bed longer as she would have liked instead of being in the back seat of the car as they drove to their destination which he also wouldn’t tell her.“Are you sure you don’t want to tell me where we are going?” She asked again and Luca rolled his eyes, taking them off his phone to stare at her again. That was also part of the reason why she was mildly irritated. He had forced her out of his arms and still wouldn't give her any attention.“Sorry, Princess.
Iris kept turning. It was very late and yet she couldn’t get herself to fall asleep. The sleeping pills Jasmine had given her did nothing to help and she was certain that it kept her awake instead of doing its job.Her eyes watched the moon and followed the owl that flew past it. She had left the window blinds open, hoping the calming view would make her fall asleep but all she had done was count the number of stars she could see and try to trace outlines with them.At the back of her mind, something nudged her. She knew what was keeping her awake and what she needed to do but something was holding her back, pinning her so she wouldn’t move towards what her body craved. She crossed her heart and made up her mind, sitting up and flinging the covers which felt heavy instead of comforting against her skin and threw her legs off the side of the bed, getting on her feet and making her way out of the room. She was sure her guts were strong but they failed her as she stood in front of their
Iris laid her head against the window, mind fuzzy as the car raced towards the Taylor’s mansion. The loud blaring of the sirens from the police cars trailing behind and in front of their car prevented her from thinking. She thought she knew what exhaustion was but she didn’t until now. The past few days had been hectic with compiling all the evidence Selene had against Vera and pulling strings to make sure her arrest was sure and nothing would be done by anyone wanting to interfere.Since she couldn’t bury herself in her thoughts, she was aware of the heat teasing her fingers as they tingled in anticipation of touching Luca’s hands lying in the space between them.He was on the phone, typing away furiously and Iris wondered if she should just use the opportunity to brush her fingers across his hands while pretending it was a mistake. Her decision was made for her when Luca absentmindedly lifted his hand to trace his fingers lightly over her hands and she flinched away from his touch
Iris sat in front of the mirror in her hotel room in a pensive mood. They had arrived in New York yesterday with Selene and were staying at the penthouse in the Rutherford’s latest hotel and it was a beauty to behold. It was a four-bedroom penthouse which Iris knew would cost a fortune for a night.A knock came on the door and she softly told the person to come in. Ace peeked his head through the tiny hole.“Are you ready? We have to leave soon. Luca is waiting for you” He told her before disappearing, closing the bedroom door behind him.Iris sighed again. Luca had given her the master suite while he took the bedroom opposite much to her disappointment. She knew he did it because of their recent sleeping arrangement but he should have asked her if she wanted to stay with him but he went ahead to softly tell her to get a good sleep while gesturing at the bedroom before he disappeared into the opposite room.Since they started sharing a bed, it was the first time she had slept in a new
“Princess” Iris heard Luca call from behind her closed door. She peeked above her computer where she stayed working on some manuscripts that the new assistant had sent her. Iris had not yet gotten used to working with Lucy who took over Hailey’s position. To her, it felt weird seeing her instead of Hailey, but the girl was nice and knew how to give her space, space that Hailey had no problem invading. Iris missed Hailey sticking her nose in her every business but now, it was so quiet in the office because Hailey had been her only friend there.“Princess? Are you sleeping?” Iris hated the uncertainty in his voice but there was nothing she could do. Something was holding her back from telling him she wasn’t angry at him and just needed time to sort out her feelings.“There is someone you need to meet. I know you don’t want to see or talk to me at the moment, but you would really like to meet her” He spoke, this time grasping her interest. She frowned in surprise and racked her head to s
“Are you okay?” Alanna asked from where she sat beside her while Luca sat opposite her. She could feel his eyes on her the past twenty minutes they had been sitting in the court’s waiting room but she kept her gaze on the floor, adamant not to meet his lingering eyes. She snapped her head up to meet Alanna’s worried gaze and she gave her a reassuring smile “As okay as my nerves would allow me to” She replied and dared to cast a glance towards Luca’s direction where she saw him looking at her as expected and she quickly looked away to meet Alanna’s knowing gaze.“You don’t have to do it if you are not okay with it. They can’t force you to testify and it won’t stop Helen from being locked up forever. They have solid proof against her” Alanna said, holding onto her arms.Iris shook her head in refusal “No, I have to. It’s going to be some sort of closure for me” Iris replied, her voice thick with so much emotion but she was glad the tears didn’t appear. She had finally been able to get a
Iris never meant to keep standing by the door with her ears pressed against them after she disappeared behind them before Luca could get to her.She couldn’t find the courage to face him. She had not been able to sort out her emotions. They were conflicting and dangerous and it messed with her head and her thoughts. When she moved out of Luca’s room, she had hoped it would give her the room to fix her thoughts and decide where her head was.Iris wanted to leave the house altogether but she wasn’t stupid enough to think it would be possible.Luca may think she didn’t notice but she had. There was an increase in the guards around the house; sometimes she could hear footsteps parade the hallway in front of the room. She knew when Luca left, the familiar heavy steps fading away into the hallway and Ace’s own which never left. She sighed in defeat and removed the black dress she was wearing. She had said her final but was reluctant to one of her best friends today so her head was a mess.I
The ride home was stifling. Iris kept her gaze on the road the entire ride and when the car rolled to a stop in front of the house, she was out of the car before anyone could say a word.Luca ran after her but her legs were faster. He hurried up the stairs just as she entered the hallway and opened the door.“Princess” Luca tried to stop her before she disappeared into the guest bedroom but failed. Maverick and Ace gave him that pitiful glance that he had come to hate but he waved them off.“Is she close?” He asked Maverick before the bulky man could step out of the room with Ace.“Yes. She should be here in a few minutes” Maverick replied and gave him a nod before they disappeared.Luca leaned on the wall across the guest bedroom and folded his hands over his chest as he stared at the closed doors. She was particularly more sensitive today since it was Hailey’s burial ceremony and he understood so he would give her the space she needed no matter how much it killed him to see her in
