Chapter 1616

Author: Oopsie Daisy
"Let's find a way to get in," Hesper suggested, but when she turned around, she realized that the police had already sealed off the area. Getting inside seemed nearly impossible.

Taking a deep breath, she scanned the surroundings, trying to figure out a way to gain access. Suddenly, she spotted a familiar face.

"Earl?"

Hearing Hesper's voice, Earl felt a chill run down his spine. He turned around and managed a smile. "What a coincidence, Ms. Rivera."

Hesper regarded him with amusement. "Indeed, it seems like quite the coincidence, Mr. Anderson. Do you have business here?"

Earl couldn't deny that he did. After all, why else would he leave the comfort of his air-conditioned room and cozy bed to come to a place like this?

Earl started to panic when he saw Hesper. The Andersons had already suffered enough at her hands, especially after Briar had returned home with a dark expression on his face.

Earl had thought he would never have to see Hesper again after leaving the black market,

"What do you have to do with this place?" Hesper countered.Earl paused before answering, "This is Briar's private property. I have a better relationship with him than with Dean. He convinced me to join his camp, and the earnings from this place were mostly mine."Hesper was taken aback by this revelation. She hadn't delved too deeply into the details of this place, but given the size and scale of the arena, she could imagine that the earnings would be substantial. Earl didn't even need to actively manage it; he simply collected the profits.Hesper felt a hint of envy, but Earl, in turn, felt somewhat insignificant in her presence. No one could match the wealth of the person standing next to her. However, if Earl was the one backing this place, it could make things easier for Hesper. She looked around and asked, "Can you bring us in?"Earl hesitated briefly before nodding. "I can, but many people in there are loyal to Briar. They would definitely recognize Mr. Chronos or you."He

Seeing Earl momentarily stunned, Hesper called his name and brought him back to the conversation. He nodded and said, "Alright, I'll make the necessary arrangements."Despite the presence of the police, they were well aware of the Anderson family's influence, which had caused hesitation among the officers upon discovering the family's ownership of the property. They were awaiting instructions from their superiors and couldn't make a decision independently. Given this situation, it wasn't difficult for Earl to obtain permission. In a way, it was relatively easy, as no one obstructed him when he entered the premises with two companions."Are you alright, ma'am?" Earl noticed Hesper looking pale, even under her disguise. He furrowed his brow. "Are you feeling unwell?""I'm fine," Hesper replied, shaking her head to convey that she was alright. Frankie realized he shouldn't have drawn attention to Hesper's condition, as they couldn't let anyone suspect she wasn't feeling well. He sile

"He knows the people here."Roshan, the man with the scars, looked at Hesper curiously. "This lady is here to see someone? I might know that person."Hesper wasn't sure if Sherese used her real name, so she hesitated but then said, "It's a woman around my age. She just joined as a medic.""The medic?" Roshan was intrigued. "There hasn't been a new medic for years because what they do here is a gamble with their life. Usually, they would take some temporary measures and go home. We don't need that many medics."Hesper frowned, but Roshan continued, "However, there was a woman around your age who just joined. I don't think she's who you're looking for, though.""Why do you think so?"Roshan cleared his throat and appeared a bit embarrassed. "This arena is where people come to gamble. The person I was talking about was here as a fake gambler, and she would cause a scene wherever someone lost money. With your status, I don't think anyone you know would need a job like this, would the

It wasn't blind trust. However, Earl had always been more confident in himself when seeking advantages and avoiding disadvantages. Now, he believed in his intuition, and it pointed to Hesper."Let's go find the lady, shall we?" Earl said, showing whose side he was on. Roshan could tell Earl respected Hesper and that she wasn't just another girl who would flock around him.Although this woman was beautiful and came with Earl, she didn't seem to be a simpleton. Some people working at the underground arena worked for Earl, like Roshan. He was Earl's man, so even though he could see what was happening, he didn't speak up.The most important skill in a place like this was to stay level-headed. One had to know where they stood and what they should or shouldn't say to keep their job.Although there was more drama, the higher the risk, the higher the reward."I noticed this lady because she's good at what she does. Even when the crowd was a little unresponsive, she always managed to stir

Otherwise, these ordinary people wouldn't be able to keep their business hidden, and if they insisted on operating from this location, they would inevitably face repeated exposure.Hesper couldn't quite comprehend why Sherese had gone to such great lengths to disrupt this underground boxing ring without informing them of her plan. Why hadn't she included them in her intentions? As for the twists and turns during this period, Hesper could only wait until she had a chance to speak with Sherese before she could ask her about them. The exact whereabouts of Sherese were now a pressing question. However, Hesper believed that Sherese wouldn't return to them at this juncture, especially considering the secrets she had been keeping from both Hesper and Rickard. Moreover, Sherese must be aware that any incident here would not escape their notice, as they were not fools.'So where will Sherese go...?'For the first time since Hesper had known Sherese, she realized that Sherese shared the sam

'Briar probably harbors intense enmity toward me now, doesn't he?'Hesper wasn't entirely sure, but she and Briar were always supposed to be enemies. Moreover, Briar had treated her as a pawn in his chess game without hesitation, so he must have been prepared for resistance.Hesper didn't care about what these people thought of her. After all, there were already plenty of people in the world who either hated her for personal reasons or because of their differing backgrounds, forcing them onto opposing sides of things. In short, love and hatred were meaningless to Hesper, unless they came from someone close to her. It was just a matter of finding herself another enemy or another potential partner. With these thoughts in mind, Hesper didn't show much of a reaction through her expression. After a moment, she said, "I'm leaving for now. If there are any updates, please let me know."Having said that, Hesper left her contact information with Earl, turned around, and left the undergroun

Frankie found himself somewhat astonished by Hesper's response. He hadn't anticipated her displaying such a cold-blooded side.'But Ma'am has always cared a lot about Ms. Duval, hasn't she? Is it because Ms. Duval has gone too far this time that Ma'am is exasperated?'As they made their way back to the car, Rickard couldn't help but notice the absence of any familiar faces nearby. Instantly, he began to suspect that something unexpected had occurred, and it seemed highly likely that Sherese had already departed."Has she gone?" Rickard inquired as Hesper got into the car.Hesper nodded solemnly. "She left a while ago, probably anticipating our arrival. Otherwise, she could've been more meticulous in removing any remaining evidence."Upon hearing Hesper's explanation, Rickard quickly connected the dots. The irregularities at the underground boxing arena were likely linked to Sherese, prompting her escape.Given their growing familiarity, the two of them didn't need many words to c

Hesper let out a sigh, understanding that Rickard's current emotions were undoubtedly complex. After all, Frankie, being the youngest, must have been by Rickard's side since childhood. The betrayal from someone close was a feeling Hesper knew all too well, but Rickard seemed even more silent and composed about it than she had been when she faced betrayal, making it difficult for Hesper to sense his inner turmoil.Nevertheless, Hesper reached out and embraced Rickard. She knew that Frankie's betrayal had shaken Rickard deeply. During this period, Rickard had discreetly excluded Frankie from involvement in important matters and kept him away from Hesper. It all made sense now.Hesper didn't say much and simply held Rickard for a while. Her expression gradually returned to its usual demeanor. After all, Frankie was just a mole, and now that he had been exposed, he was no longer a threat to them.Throughout this time, Rickard hadn't openly exposed Frankie, indicating that he likely inte

He had never anticipated that he would end up loving her so deeply. It could be said that amidst all the misunderstandings and complexities, their journey together had taken many winding paths."I wouldn't risk getting into trouble just to set off fireworks for someone I didn't even like," Rickard said, his voice gentle. "You dummy."His words were soft, but as Hesper listened to his explanation, she cleared her throat, and her eyes turned bloodshot. She had never imagined that the person she had loved so intensely in her youth had, at some point in their lives, secretly admired her.Hesper attempted to smile but ended up with teary eyes. Seeing this, Rickard reached out and affectionately ruffled her hair. "If it's going to make you cry, I won't say anything more."Hesper pursed her lips. They were flooded with memories, and Hesper couldn't help but admit that she had been through so much with Rickard. Her eyes welled up with emotion. The livestream ended, as they couldn't maintain constant surveillance of their lives. Even though they hadn't gone home yet, the crew had left.In the past two days, people had gotten to know them quite well, so the crew decided to give them some alone time.Hesper sat in the passenger seat and stole a glance at Rickard. She couldn't help but say, "I never expected that the only time you were seen as making a mistake in Grandpa's eyes was because of me.""There are many things you don't know," he replied. Hesper raised an eyebrow and asked, "Like what? Tell me."Suddenly, Hesper recalled the countless times Rickard had looked at her. Yet, during those moments, Rickard had always had feelings for Juniper. She knew that was the reality, so she never expected that Rickard might have had the same strong feelings for her as she had for h

Hesper glanced at Rickard, who remained emotionless, but she still reached out to hold his hand.[This is tough to see. Both of Rickard's parents are no longer here… Sigh.][Hesper immediately checked on Rickard. She hadn't realized she had so many childhood photos. Julian appeared in some of them, too. Before everything went sour.Rickard didn't have many pictures. As he grew older, he became quieter. Most of them showed Hesper standing next to Julian, but there was something off about them.[Did you notice... In many of those pictures, Hesper was looking at Rickard, and in others, Rickard was looking at her.][Oh my god, is this puppy love? I had no idea!][I remember Rickard had another lover.]Hesper had noticed, too, but there was no need to remind people that Rickard used to hate her, so she dismissed it as a

Hesper and Rickard entered the room and awkwardly informed Ernest that everything had been live-streamed just now. Ernest was shocked, but upon hearing that it was something people do, he nodded."It's fine. There's nothing that others can't hear."Hesper pursed her lips and glanced at Rickard before saying, "We didn't expect the Summers to come and see you. You should move in with us so these people will leave you alone."If Ernest lived with them, no one would dare intrude because they represented power and influence.Who would dare challenge them?"I don't want to get involved in your life. Renfew and Renarie would keep you occupied enough."Hesper understood that he had already made up his mind not to live with them, so she didn't press the matter further. She could understand his concerns, as many things might become inconvenient. So what if the cameras were still recording?"Was my son's life not as valuable as your son's?"If he had grasped this earlier, recent events might not have unfolded. Jade had a point. The live chat fell silent. Though they lacked the full backstory, they could deduce what had transpired in the past.[I heard Rickard lost his parents when he was a child. I feel sorry for him.][His parents died because of that incident. It's no surprise if he harbors resentment.][Truthfully, this old man has no shame. If my child were responsible for another child's death, I'd beg for forgiveness.]Everything unfolding before their eyes was purely coincidental, and no one had control over the situation. They could only watch and terminate the livestream immediately if anything escalated.Fortunately, Jade received a stern talking-to and refrained from discussing the matter further, but Mrs. Summers did not fare as well. Hesper and the others bore witness to her irrational behavior.[This is e

"We've known each other for years, Ernest. I saved your life once, and now your descendants want to take my son's life!"As they approached, Jade Summers was angrily berating Ernest before him. Hesper's countenance immediately turned frosty as she walked over to Ernest."You should conduct yourself more appropriately, Mr. Summers Sr."Jade was taken aback to see Hesper, but he composed himself, took a deep breath, and fixed her with a hatred-filled gaze."If it weren't for you, none of this would have happened. You're just a woman. Since when do you get a say in the Duval family matters?"In the 21st century, people were all for equality. Besides, Hesper was no ordinary or unintelligent woman. Naturally, she had a voice in these matters. The viewers were inundated with comments when they heard Jade's words, and the live chat exploded.[Who is this guy? [Didn't Hesper mention that Mr. Duval Sr. took care of her? Maybe she did grow up well.][I'm certain she did. Rickard was behind the wheel, with Hesper in the passenger seat.During the drive, they remained silent, but to observers, it appeared as though they were in harmony.Upon arriving at the ancestral mansion, Hesper noticed other cars parked around and cast a curious glance at Rickard. Visitors to Ernest's home were a rarity."Sir, Ma'am, you're back," a young housekeeper greeted them. It was the same person who had assisted Wendy earlier, but they couldn't recall her name. Nevertheless, Hesper had faith in her.Noticing the housekeeper's troubled demeanor, Hesper deduced that the guest inside was likely unwelcome. However, she couldn't fathom who would disrupt Ernest's life. Given

Rickard noticed something in Hesper's expression, prompting him to ask, "Is there something else you haven't told me?"Being intimately familiar with each other wasn't always without its challenges. Hesper could never conceal anything from him.She sighed and replied, "It's nothing. Just that Pennleigh will also be on the list."Rickard fell silent.Hesper was aware that sometimes Rickard might not appear bothered, but Pennleigh's presence did bother him.Observing Hesper's awkward expression, Rickard lowered his gaze and suddenly took on a pitiful appearance, like a big dog caught in the rain.Yet, she knew he was merely putting on an act. Still, every time she saw him like that, she couldn't help but miss the Rickard who didn't engage in such playful antics. They had shared countless years together.Hesper acknowledged that their bond might not have been a genuine friendship. Renee had abandoned her when given the choice. However, Hesper had faced such situations before.Thankfully, there had been someone who had placed her first in their heart, reassuring her that she wasn't always relegated to being an option.
