Andre watched keenly as the men poured out of the stairwell into the garage, they looked every bit as menacing as they had when he had encountered them outside the hospital, he wondered what they could possibly want with the woman and her child. He wasnt going to let himself believe the bogus story that the man had told him about a debt and some sort of settlement. Paul's words kept ringing in his ears as he watched the men fan out into the garage, in search of the woman and her child.
This looked like a very well choreographed play, the only thing stopping him from reaching a conclusion at this moment being the tears he had seen on the lady's face.
" Mommy, you're crying", the little girl whimpered in the back seat as she noticed the tears flowing down her mother's face. Andre stopped a moment to look at the lady in the back seat to see that she had pulled her child close and was now gently rocking the girl to put her at ease. He didn't consider himself heartless enough to ignore the silent plea in the lady's eyes.
" I'll get you out of here, but that's it", he told her in a strict tone.
" I don't know what's going on here, and it's none of my business. I want no part in it, Do you understand?", he asked her, staring into her eyes as he did. He had seen enough fake tears from Tanya to not be fooled by these.
The lady who was still clutching her child close to her body nodded her head as she tried to wipe the tears from her face, it was a pitiful sight and Andre wished he could afford the luxury of pitying her. However, when one was a member of one of the richest and most powerful family in this city, pity was a luxury you couldn't afford as it would get you exploited more times than not.
The windows of the car were tinted, giving them a very clear view of the approaching men without giving away their location. Andre watched them for a little while, and when he had spotted the sleazy looking man that had approached him much earlier, he decided he had seen enough, it was time for them to leave the garage and hopefully never come in contact with these characters again.
At this point he didnt care whether the woman in the back of his car was lying to him or not, he just wanted to leave and drop them off, put the whole incident behind him and get back to the restaurant. Much of his time had already been wasted by the incident this morning and he wasn't even sure he would be able to meet up with recovering his ring from Tanya, all thanks to the lady, her child and whoever these urchins were.
" It's okay baby, we're going home", Jane whispered into Stephanie's ear as she tried to calm the little girl down. Andre started up the car engine and let his foot rest on the accelerator as the car inched forward slowly. He watched as the men who were standing at the various corners of the garage all turned their attention towards the moving vehicle, there was no doubt in their mind that the quarry they were seeking was within the moving car.
" Stop right there!", one of them yelled as they gathered in front of the vehicle to stop him from exiting the garage.
Andre paid no mind to them and kept driving, increasing his speed as he approached the men who had gathered themselved and were trying to block his path to the exit. They jumped out of the way upon seeing that he wasn't willing to slow down.
He sped past them and only slowed down when he neared the exit, there was one man standing there, the sleazy looking man from before who he now understood to be their boss. He slowed the car down and let the window glass down just enough for the man to see that he was the one behind the wheel. A quick smile from him in the man's direction and he sped off again, through the exit and out of the garage.
" Till we meet again Mr Fernandez", a very annoyed Adrian screamed. He was sure that the young heir had helped Jane and her daughter escape and even though he couldn't do anything to stop it, his anger still boiled.
" What are you looking at?", he screamed at his men who were all standing around and watching him react in frustration to losing the lady and her kid.
Jane remained quiet in the backseat of the car as Andre drove away from the hospital building, she was grateful that he had at least taken her up on her request to get her away from the garage, and now that they had escaped the clutches of Adrian and his men, she knew that it would be expedient for her to part ways with him, he already suspected her of framing him to get some sort of reward and it hurt her that this was the case.
" What's your name?", Andre's suspicious voice came from the front of the vehicle as he spared her a look through the inner rear view mirror. He turned his focus to the road as he waited for her to speak.
Jane hesitated a bit before she responded to his question.
" I'm Jane, Jane Moss", she responded, turning her gaze toward the buildings on the exterior of the vehicle. She was many things, but a liar was not one of them, and if that was how Andre chose to see her, then she didn't owe him any sort of respect.
" Well Jane, where can I drop you off? I have somewhere to be", he retorted, his eyes still focused on the road ahead as he spoke.
" We'll be fine at the white lotus", she responded quickly. She didn't want to give him the satisfaction of thinking that she wanted anything more from him asides the transportation he was providing and the medical bills that he had paid.
The white lotus was the name of Andre's new restaurant and from the way she said it, he reasoned that she had no idea that he owned the place, he intended to keep it that way.
" I'm headed in that direction", he said in a low tone, trying to stop himself from looking in the mirror one more time, he didn't want to make eye contact with her and begin to feel sorry for something he had no part in.
Stephanie had been quiet in her mother's arms all this while, not saying anything but enjoying the coziness of her mother's embrace. She cast one more angry look at the "bad man" who had hurt her mother, she wondered why her mother was being so nice to him after what he had done.
" We're here", Andre announced as he slowed to a stop and parked a little distance away from the restaurant. He looked into the inner rearview mirror again as he waited for Jane and her daughter to alight.
Jane was moving as quickly as she could as she tried to get all her stuff from the car seat and get the door open. She couldnt wait to part ways with the arrogant man who taught she was some sort of swindler.
" Hey, hang on!", Andre called.
Jane had managed to get the door open but she froze upon hearing his voice.
" Is something wrong?", she asked as she looked around in the back of the vehicle, she thought she must have forgotten something for him to be calling her back.
" Here, take this", Andre said as he handed her some cash.
Jane glared at him with pain in her eyes, she felt insulted that he would do this, offer her some money to validate his reasoning that she had really gone through all this trouble just to get some money from him.
" I know I've been a jerk about this and I'm sorry. Get something nice for your daughter please", he said in a much more kinder tone than he had been previously speaking to her.
Jane stared at him for a while and when she was convinced that he was being genuine, she took one look at Stephanie and then proceeded to reluctantly collect the money he was offering before she alighted from the vehicle. Andre stayed in the car and watched them walk away, he could see the little girl Stephanie making faces at him as her mother carried her away. He let a little smile tug at the corners of his lips as he watched the little firecracker.
His amusement with the little girl was shortlived as he was reminded of the urgent reality he was about to face when he saw Margaret walking towards his parked vehicle with his security detail in tow. The paparazzi outside told him that the event was well and truly in full swing, he hoped he hadn't missed much of the ceremony due to his engagements with Jane and her child.
" Welcome back sir, they're ready for you", Margaret said as she walked up to him, he had alighted from the vehicle and handed the keys to her.
" Is my father here yet?", he asked as he walked towards the entrance, trying to stay in the circle formed by the bodyguards.
" He has managed to keep the guests occupied boss", Margaret responded, walking beside him.
" Of course he has", Andre frowned.
Much of this evening had been planned by Andre to ensure that it did not happen the way it was happening at the moment, but it seemed fate had other ideas.
" There he is, my son, the man of the hour. Ladies and gentlemen please put your hands together for Andre Fernandez", a loud male voice bellowed from the centre of the hall as Andre walked into it. Margaret and the security detail halted their advance and let Andre walk on to meet his father at the centre of the filled hall unaccompanied.
The hall erupted into a loud applause as he walked. If not for the antics he suspected that his father had begun to pull, he felt really happy being received like this as he had waited a very long time for it, the moment he would be recognized for all the work he had put in in setting up the white lotus, it was by all standards a success.
Andre walked up to his father and turned to face the audience from beside him.
" This is a proud moment for me as a father", Carlos Fernandez continued as he put his hand down on his son's shoulder.
" I propose a toast to the future of the Fernandez group of companies", he said as he lifted his glass.
Everyone in the room followed suit with smiles on their faces, all except one; Andre. He had worked so hard to step out of his father's shadow and in that moment, it was all gone, his restaurant, his sweat, had been incorporated into the "Fernandez Franchise".
" I propose another toast, to my son and his hard work in setting up the white lotus", a familiar feminine voice came from the other end of the room. Andre allowed a smile to spread across his face at the look of shock on his father's face upon seeing the owner of the voice, it was none other than Andre's mother.
Carlos reluctantly raised his glass in agreement with the toast and everybody else followed suit. Andre smiled at his mother as the toast was received, he could tell that she was so much more drunk than she had been during their phone call in the morning, she was seated and struggling to maintain her composure.
As soon as everybody was distracted and beginning to pair off to mingle, Carlos pulled his son aside.
" Get her out of here immediately", he snarled.
" What's the problem dad, you don't seem happy to see your ex-wife", Andre responded cheekily, snatching his hand from his father's grip.
" I know you can see what I see. If you choose to be a child about this then that's on you, you know what the papers will look like by the morning if you let her indulge herself any further. This conversation is over", Carlos spat with a tone of finality as he walked away from his son towards his current wife. Andre followed his father's path with his eyes to glare at the woman who had undoubtedly been watching them and observing their exchange. He had seen enough, the party was over for him.
He stopped one of the waiters as they passed and snatched a full glass of champagne from the tray he carried, downing it in one gulp before he began walking towards his mother. He signalled his security detail of his intention to leave as he walked.
" Let's go mum", he said softly as soon as he got close enough to his drunk mother, he looped an arm around her and helped her stand to her feet, his security detail had already swarmed around him and shielded the both of them as they moved.
" I'm so proud of you my boy", she said in between hiccups as they walked.
Andre felt a tear sting his eyes as they made their way outside. He knew his mother had come here with the best intentions but she pretty much couldn't help herself whenever she had access to liquor. Andre was quite relieved that all the members of the press had followed his arrival inside the hall, but still he kept looking around to ensure that nobody was taking pictures.
The car was already waiting by the time that they got outside and Stanley held the door open for the both of them to enter the car. Andre helped his mother into the vehicle and entered after her, waiting until the door was closed behind them before he spoke.
" You shouldn't have come mom", he began, already planning a speech in his head.
" I'm dying Andre", she spat angrily at him, her bloodshot eyes silencing his thoughts. There was a deathly silence within the car, only interrupted by the driver Stanley entering the vehicle and starting the ignition.
Andre couldn't bring himself to say anything, he had been hard on his mother for obvious reasons, but upon hearing what she had to say, he could only hope that she was speaking due the influence of whatever liquor she must have consumed, it had to be. He lifted his eyes to look at her one more time and discovered that she had passed out in the car seat, she lay there, unmoving and unperturbed in her sleep. The fact that she could fall asleep so soon after giving him such reason to worry was all the more reason for Andre to doubt what she had just said. He thought about waking her, but decided otherwise, he would wait until they were home to discuss this, this wasn't the time nor the place. He shifted his gaze from the sleeping form of his drunk mother to the buildings speeding by on the exterior of the chauffer driven vehicle, he allowed his thoughts wander through all that had happened today, it had indeed been surprisingly eventful. Almost everything that had happened today had su
Jane had wasted so much time with Stephanie outside today that they arrived home quite late, she did not know how to explain to the little girl that they were on the run from a loan shark and that her late father had been the one to put them in this position. The little girl adored her father and Jane didn't want to tell her anything that would ruin her impression of him. Anderson had been a good man when he was alive to the best of his abilities and like everyone else, he had his demons. She would not on account of them destroy the good impression his daughter had of him. Everything her late husband had done had been for the good of the family and even though she seldom agreed with his methods, there was nothing that could convince her that his intentions towards her and her child had any ill motive attached to them. Jane closed the door to their house as quietly as she could, looking outside repeatedly to ensure that they were not being followed as she set little Stephanie down ins
Jane stood in front of the house. She hesitated and didn't want to enter at first. She had no idea what would happen to her and what kind of mood he would be in, her hesitation grew with each moment that passed, but even as she stood there delaying her decision to enter the house, she could not bring herself to walk away. Her safety and that of her daughter demanded that she find a way to reach some common ground with him, it was quite important that she did, as she could not tell what lengths he was willing to go to to redeem her family's debt. "Hey! What are you doing there? This is no place to stand around, keep it moving", a thick male voice bellowed from behind her. She started upon hearing the voice, a very cold chill crept up her spine as she turned to look at the man who was speaking to her. She observed the roughness of his face and the length of his beard. He was undoubtedly one of Adrian's enforcers, she was in the right place. " Are you deaf or something?", he asked as
She still shivered as she looked into his eyes, she wasn't sure if she'd get away from this safe and sound. "You've finally decided to pay your debt? I thought this day would never come", he sneered as he allowed himself to take a seat on the sofa. The look in his eyes suggested that he wasn't convinced that Jane had actually come here to offset her debt. " She's not a threat guys, I'm sure you can see that", he muttered as he waved his hand at the men who were standing behind Jane with guns trained on her. There was no way in the world he expected the young woman to be capable of violence, but he had allowed her realise just how under threat she was, for very specific reasons. " Let's see it then", he instructed with a smug grin on his face. There was a wicked grin on his face, He knew that there was no way that she had come up with that much money in so little time, he just wanted to see what she had done, and remind her just how futile her efforts were. Jane reached into her ba
Andre tried to calm himself as he rushed out of the restaurant. Stanley saw his boss in a haste to leave the restaurant and acted accordingly. Luckily, he was done with his cup of tea and cookies by the time this happened.Stanley rushed ahead of Andre to get the door open for him to enter the vehicle. The bodyguards standing outside seemed not to be ready for the boss to be out so soon and it could be seen in the frenzy that overtook them as they tried to get into their vehicle as quickly as they can. Stanley held the door open for Andre to get into the vehicle. In Andre's rush, he had forgotten to ask which hospital his mother had been taken and as soon as the realization hit him, he removed his phone from his pocket one more time to make the enquiry. He held the phone to his ear as the line trilled, Stanley had entered the vehicle by now and was now seated patiently, the car engine on and waiting for his boss' instructions." " Good morning sir", the receptionist greeted. Andre flashed a smile in return, not really feeling in the mood to return the pleasantries that were offered. He was here for serious business and the sooner he could see the man he came to see, the easier it would be for him to manage the intense emotional strain that he currently endured at the moment." Is he in?", he asked. He hadn't bothered calling before he came as he suspected that the man would refuse him if he knew what the circumstance causing his visit was. It would be much easier if he met him face to face and explained what had prompted the meeting. It was out of character for him to book an appointment to see someone, especially when the person he was here to see was a relative but his hands were tied at the moment, he needed all the help he can get, at least his mother did." He's currently in a meeting but I'll let him know you're here once he's done from his meeting", the secretary responded with a smile on her face. He
" Let's sit over here", the man gestured as he pointed to the lounge area. From his disposition, Andre could tell that he had grown tired of sitting behind the desk to attend to his appointments and seeing that he was a relative, it was quite agreeable that they discuss whatever Andre was here for under less official circumstances." Of course", Andre agreed as he followed the man to the lounge area. The man walked ahead of him and gestured him towards an empty seat, Andre smiled at him and accepted his offer, letting himself sink into the plush soft cushion of the sofa." Its quite unusual for you to visit me Andre, so before you speak, I already know something is wrong", Bernard began. He had a dull look in his eyes which seemed to say he was not interested in anything that would bother the peace he had struggled to build for himself here over the years.Andre managed an uncomfortable smile as his uncle spoke, he wasn't far from the truth and as he spoke, Andre had felt an overwhelm
Jane sighed as she recognized the neighborhood of the restaurant, she had hoped that the cab ride would be longer as she had grown quite comfortable in the seat of the cab, sleepy even. So much that she had been unaware of what was happening around her for a huge chunk of the trip from the traphouse till they had arrived here, in proximity now to her destination. She peered at the inner rearview mirror and found the driver looking at her, he had kind eyes and grey hair and seemed to understand how tired she was. " Do you need me to make a detour?", he asked, still looking at her through the mirror. She was caught off guard by the question and the more she thought about it, she saw the kindness behind the man's words. " Oh no! Thank you for offering sir", she responded quickly as she didn't know if she would be able to afford the fare if he did what he was offering. The old man nodded in understanding and turned his eyes back towards the road. In the next few minutes, the cab slowed
Jane's heart raced as she stood there, her gaze shifting between the two men in the room. The atmosphere felt charged, an unspoken tension hung in the air, and she found herself momentarily lost for words. She cleared her throat, gathering her composure, and met the gaze of the man who had asked the question."I... I'm sorry for interrupting," she began, her voice betraying a hint of nervousness. "Margaret told me to come here. I have a note from her."She held out the piece of paper she had received, noticing that both men exchanged a quick, almost imperceptible glance before focusing their attention back on her. The man who had offered her the job took the note and glanced at it briefly, his face betraying no emotion."Please, have a seat," he gestured to the chair in front of his desk. Jane hesitated for a moment before complying, her eyes never leaving his face. The other man, who was seated to the side, leaned back in his chair, studying her with an intensity that sent a shiver do
"Hey Mandy," Jane called into her phone as she readied herself for the uncomfortable task of asking her friend if she was going to be able to watch stephanie today while she worked. "You do know you don't have to be so polite when you want to bring Stephanie over," Mandy teased as she heard her friend's pleading voice over the phone. Jane always felt like the little girl was inconveniencing the ladies and was increasingly skeptical about leaving Stephanie there. "I'm going to have to bother you one more time Mandy," She squeaked into the phone. "It's alright Silly, but you have to bring her by in the afternoon, I have to go pick up supplies this morning and I don't know how long I'm going to be there. You can hang onto her for a little while till I'm back, I'll call you," Mandy informed her. Jane knew better than to express her dipleasure at the fact that Mandy was not going to be around, She was already doing her a huge favor watching over Stephanie while she worked. She turned h
You don't seem very scared Jane," Adrian scoffed as they both settled down inside his car. She could tell that they weren't the only ones in the vehicle as a faint cloud of smoke kept rising from behind them, the backseat was undoubtedly occupied. The only information Jane did not have was how many people were sitting there."I must be losing my powers, it's either that or you"re getting attracted to me Jane," he continued shamelessly as she stretched his hand across the space between their seats and brushed aside the strand of hair that fell across her face.Jane jolted backwards away from his hand in repulsion as laughter came from the back seat at the drama happening in front of them. From the sound of their voices, Jane could tell that there were two of them. She wondered why they were here so soon after giving her time to raise the money she owed them."I bet you're wondering why we're here Janie," Adrian's shrill voice came yet again as he smirked in her direction. Jane was a bit nervous, it was going to be her first day on the job and to be frank, she really didn't know what to expect yet. She panicked for the first time today after dropping Stephanie off with her friend Mandy. Mandy owned a hair salon not too far from the white lotus and she had been quite keen to take Stephanie off her hands upon hearing that she had gotten a job at the white lotus, the news of the new and luxury establishment had no doubt gotten to her ears as her clientele in the highbrow area had no doubt visited the place at least once. The restaurant was the talk of the town, this made it so much easier for Mandy to agree to taking care of stephanie for the period that Jane would be at work. Stephanie was a curious little girl and seeing how women walked into the shop with very unruly and disorganized hair but leaving with beautifully styled ones seemed to intrigue her, enough not to even notice when her mother left the shop. As Jane stepped into the restaurant that mor
Andre had decided to make this trip alone, he had decided not to take his chauffeur or any of his bodyguards along and that decision even though it had been hard to make, was necessary as he didn't need anyone to know the specifics of what he had come here to do. It was difficult enough to be able to bear the fact that his mother had kept her worsened health condition from him, it would be far worse that gossip about the situation and how he intended to remedy it got out.All the staff who worked under the Fernandez' employ knew better than to divulge any secrets that they came across while working for the family, but this in particular was something that Andre couldn't risk getting out. He had also reasoned that his uncle had a far better chance of reasoning with him if he came on his own and not as some spoiled heir with a convoy of employees following him to the establishment.Right now, it did not matter how he had come to see the man, his request had been turned down and for the
