Chapter 5
Show Me TomorrowElianI don’t know but I feel like I’m taking things too far. I should have just walked away after giving my unsolicited advice. He didn't ask for my help, he probably doesn't even need it. I have no reason to be here. He may be deaf but for fuck sake he isn't Martin! I don’t have to do this. I don’t have to be here.Repeating this over and over in my mind hasn't worked so far. I mean, I just ran a million miles in the middle of the night just so a random guy can breathe? What the fuck does that even mean??? Why can't I just fucking go back? All it would take is a simple apology and I can go back to my heist or the planning of said heist at least.I drag my attention away from my troubled thoughts back to the person causing my troubled thoughts.'There is nothing here,' Aiden signs looking around in confusion.'There is,' I respond gesturing to the playground. He frowns, cocking his head to the side, 'A playground? I don't understand.''Sometimes when my brother feels…down he likes to go to our local park and play for hours and hours jumping down all the slides and playing with the dogs at the park. He always feels better afterwards.''How old is your brother?''Eight.''I see.'I laugh at his expression, 'I know you think this is ridiculous but trust me it isnt. Just give it a try, don't think about anything just...breathe.'He bites his bottom lips as his pale cheeks stain pink.'What is it?' I ask.'What should I do? I don't know how to play this…'I burst out laughing, 'didn’t you play as a kid?'His face falls, 'no.'I stare at him silently waiting for him to burst out laughing and confess it's a joke but his hands remain still, his expression doesn’t waver.'You’re serious?'He nods.Well fuck.I stand up, reaching my hand out to him. He gently swats it away, standing up himself.'How old are you?' I ask trying to dispel the awkward atmosphere. '18? 19?''26'I stare at him, mouth agape. No fucking way! 'You’re 26 years old?''Yes.''2 and 6' I sign slowly in case he doesn't understand, '26?'He rolls his eyes, 'yes.'I gawk at him; he looks so young with his oval shaped face and huge brown eyes. I thought he was just a tall teenager, 'you don't look your age.'‘I know. I don't like it but I can't help it.''Everyone wants to look younger than they are though.''I do not.'We walk side by side until we're standing in front of a swing, 'sit.' I tell him.He hesitates as he gently moves the swing back and forth it creaks in response, 'I am too old for this''Well you don’t look it.'His glares at me pursing his small lips, 'I know how to fight you know.'I burst out laughing, 'oh? Me too! Maybe you can show me a few moves?" I joke, eying him from head to toe while I flex my muscles. He cheeks redden as he looks away shyly. I sigh, how can this man be 26? He so…not 26.'Sit.' I say again pointing at the swing.'Will it break?''Yes, that's the point of it.'His eyes widen with shock, 'it is?''No Aiden it's not, now sit.'He sighs, 'you're not nice.' he walks towards the swing, lowering himself slowly. I grip the chains tightly, keeping it in place. It takes a while for him to find his balance, and then I apply some gentle pressure but the swing doesn’t budge. I tap his shoulder, 'raise your feet.'He looks at me like I've grown two heads, 'but if I raise my feet, I'll fall!''I won't let you.'He delays a while before slowly lifting his feet off the ground. I apply gentle pressure again. This time it moves without resistance. The momentum throws off his balance but I'm quick to support him. I place a hand on his back and another on the swing starting a gentle rocking motion. When he finally gets it, I apply more force. He gasps out loud gripping the chains tightly till his knuckles turn white, his breathing becoming labored. I chuckle, adding even more force. He nearly topples off the swing. I bite my tongue to keep from laughing. Just because he can’t hear me laughing doesn’t mean he can’t see me laughing.I place a hand on his shoulder, 'You need to relax, just go with the flow don’t fight it.'He nods, relaxing his tense shoulders. Things move more smoothly, his fingers loosen up as his breaths become even. After a few moments I stop.He whines in protest, 'why did you stop?''I want to teach how to do it yourself.'His face falls, 'ok.''Don’t worry, it will still be fun.'I walk over to the other swing. 'This is how you do it' I sign, showing him a demonstration of creating momentum with your legs. He gives it a try.'No, push harder, you won't fall I promise.'He does and he gets it. I give him a smile, 'good job. Think you can handle it yourself?''Honestly I’d rather not.''Why?''This method is…''Is what?''Not as nice as the first.'I stare at him unsure of my next response. His face turns beet red, 'I'm sorry' he signs, hoping off the swing and running off."Wait!" I yell. He’s fucking deaf you moron go after him.I chase after him, catching up to him in a few steps. 'There is no need to apologize,' I tell him, 'we can do it how you like.'He bites his bottom lip, 'Really?''Yes, I think it's more fun that way too.'He breaks into a wide grin, 'thank you.'I lead him back to swing and we continue our previous actions taking turns on the swing. It's quiet and peaceful. For a while I don't let myself think of anything. Not my parents or rent money or Cecelia. I clear my mind completely. I let the fresh midnight breeze sweep all of my thoughts away until the only thing I hear is the creak of the chains and Aiden's steady breaths. This is nice. I should breathe more often.'We should go.' Aiden tells me after a while.'How long has it been?''Three hours.''Three hours!?''Yes.''But I wanted to show you the other… I mean there are other stuff here not just the swings'His face lights up, ' then show me tomorrow?’I look into his wide hopeful eyes and for the life of me I can’t bring myself to say no, ‘I’ll bring you tomorrow.’what the fuck have I gotten myself into!?CHAPTER 6IF ONLY IIT WAS THAT EASYAIDEN.TWO WEEKS LATER...Brrrrrrr!!!The cursed alarm chimes for the umpteenth time. I groan, reaching over to shut it off. I honestly cannot think of a time when I despised my alarm clock so deeply. I also cannot think of a time when I needed an alarm clock in the first place. For the last five years I have always gone to bed at exactly 11pm and promptly woken up at 7am. My alarm clock and I were always in sync with me waking just as it went off but today we are sworn enemies. To be fair I have never spent nights out playing with a boy before. I have never spent the night out before period. because until recently I have never had a reason to. I hop out of bed and stretch out my sore limbs. Jumping fences is not a skill I'm particularly good at but after repeated usage I have gotten better at it. After my muscles have loosened up, I feel less like a walking corpse. It's unnerving to feel so tired on the outside yet so alive on the inside, consequen
CHAPTER 7SCAREDY CATELIAN"Stand straight when I'm speaking to you!" Janet snaps."Sorry," I promptly correct my posture, "please continue.""Listen clearly I will not repeat myself again!"I nod faking a smile. Fuck, my brain feels like hot wet fudge. I can't think straight, I just want to crawl in bed and sleep for five years. Is that too much to ask?"Swish a cup of vinegar around in the toilet bowl using a toilet brush," she continues, "then add a cup of baking soda, followed by an additional cup of vinegar. Let the fizzing solution sit for 10 minutes. Use a toilet brush to scrub the stains. Let the mixture sit for a few more minutes and then flush-""Janet?" Harry calls, unknowingly saving my life. He appears in the bathroom door dressed in a business suit, a light colored shirt and a business-style tie, just like the first day we met."Good morning Harry." I greet with a smile. He has no idea what he has just done for me and my poor, poor brain. He returns the smile, “Good mor
CHAPTER 8THE MONSTERAIDEN“We apologize for any inconvenience this must have caused.” My eyes run through the last words of the email and I slam my laptop shut. I an trying not to feel too disappointed but I’m failing miserably.Yet another manufacturer has declined, yet another dead end. I study the blueprint next to me with a deepening frown. The designs for my solar powered cars are basically complete however there is still a monumental problem; I have yet to find a manufacturer that creates such powerful yet small solar panels like I designed in the prints. In stallion automobiles the design and aesthetics of the car are very important. Nobody wants to drive a car with a giant solar panel just sitting on top.“What should I do?” my father and I planned to launch this car within the next three years but now it seems it will have to be delayed further. How hard is to make a compact solar panel?!Brrrrr!!!The alarm goes off causing my to heart race with excitement. Its 11:00 that m
CHAPTER 9Smile And WaveELIANI gently tap Aiden’s shoulder, his tightly shut eyes pry open, taking in the interior of the bar. I have to say it looks better than I anticipated. A candle lit chandelier, huge barrels to store the beer, lots of polished wood, and soft jazz music. It really sells the vibe of 1800’s bar. I like it, it’s warm and cozy. It makes me want to forget all my troubles at the door and just have drinks with a friend. I suppose that’s what the designer intended.I turn to Aiden with a wide smile, ‘do you like it?’ I really hope he does I can tell we can have a lot of fun here.He nods fervently.Thank God, ‘Okay good, should we sit?’He stares fearfully at the few customers scattered about, who don’t even raise their heads to spare us a glance. His face turns pale as his huge eyes find mine.‘They won’t bite.’ I reassure him, squeezing his shoulder gently, ‘they won’t bite I promise.’He nods in understanding. I take his clammy hands in mine, leading us to a table a
CHAPTER 10We Can Die Another DayAIDEN“What’s wrong with you?” Aunt Clara asks eying me with concern.“I’m a little tired.” I lie.“Is it the solar project? Is that what’s stressing you out so much?”“Yes that’s what the problem is.” It’s definitely not because I have been gallivanting the city with a handsome stranger. She sighs, placing her tea down, “you know you don’t have to handle it alone right? You can give it to me, I can help you.”“No thanks, that’s all I have I can’t give that to you too.”She winces, “what does that mean?”“That its mine and mine alone Aunt Clara” I reply trying not to roll my eyes, she like to play the victim in every situation, “can we stop talking now? My head hurts too much.”“Well since you don’t need me ever I’m off to work,” she huffs, cat-walking out.“adios.” I mutter.Yesterday was amazing of course it’s just that I always have to pay for it in the morning, and eventually it will catch up to me. Maybe I should re-arrange my schedule to accommod
CHAPTER 11MADAMEELIANDespite my throbbing headache I still managed to set a goal for myself this morning; find out what is in the last room and try to act normal when I see Janet but my intuition tells me the former will definitely be harder.“Okay Eli lets go.” I whisper to myself as I open the kitchen door. To my immense joy Janet is not here but there are five notes on the table titled with the names of different workers with my name on the third. The note reads;“Scrub the entire balcony, TWICE, the chairs tables and water the flowers there as well. I will be back before lunch.”I roll my eyes as I rip the note to shreds. Scrub the balcony twice? twice!? why!? Did someone die there?! I honestly don’t know if Janet hates me particularly or she’s just an annoyingly meticulous person. A quick glance at the other notes and I’m still not certain. I suppress a groan as I take my cleaning supplies and walk to the balcony. In my next life I won’t ever get caught stealing, never, ever, e
CHAPTER 12Never Have I EverAiden“Moisturizer, serum, cleanser, sunscreen, facemask, exfoliating scrub…” all of this on just one person’s face? I stare in shock at the products listed in the article. On my outing with Elian tonight I decided to put in some effort into how I looked. The first thing that came to mind was skincare but…goddamn it's a lot. Especially since my outing is only two hours away. I decide to leave the skin care stuff for now. I don’t necessarily have bad skin but it could certainly be better.I sigh as I ransack my wardrobe for something to wear. I settle for dark cotton pants, a white t shirt and a flannel. It’s simple yes but I don’t look like an orphaned adult anymore so I think it does the trick. I study my reflection in the mirror to find any imperfections or rather any way too obvious imperfections. “My damn hair,” Flat and completely lifeless. I have no idea how I've been walking around looking like a highschool teacher. I return to my computer. Only my b
CHAPTER 13CONFUSEDELIAN‘Alright…’ I say, thinking of an interesting non-mother related question, ‘never have I ever…had a threesome.’‘Elian!’ Aiden stares at me with wide eyes, his cheeks turning a bright red.I chuckle. I'm beginning to form a nasty habit of making Aiden blush but I can’t help it. He's just that cute.‘I haven’t even gotten a hand job. What makes you think I’ve had a threesome?’‘I don’t know?’ I reply with a shrug, ‘It’s not impossible.’He rolls his eyes, ‘No Elian I haven’t, have you?’I chuckle as I sip on my beer, ‘what do you think?’‘You’re nasty Elian.’ He signs with a wince.‘Ah but nasty is fun isn’t it? We can’t both be saints Aiden, that would be so boring.’He rolls his eyes ignoring me as he takes a sip of his beer.I chuckle awkwardly as I sit upright looking him straight in the eyes, ‘can I ask you something personal?’‘Oh? Asking if I’ve had a threesome isn’t personal enough for you?'For real though Aiden.’He sighs, ‘I have a feeling I’ll regret
CHAPTER 19NOT STRAIGHT ELIAN“Flour, butter, cheese, sugar and extra virgin olive oil.” I recite the list Maria wrote for me back to her, “is that all?”“Yes that is all for now,” she replies with a warm smile, “follow Mario he’ll take you to the store I usually get this.” My eyes widen at her words, Mario? My Mario? My best friend Mario? Ohhhhh today just got very interesting.I give her a bright smile, a little too bright actually. “alright I’ll be very, very happy to follow Mario.” Hopefully he can teach me a thing or two about the ways of the human breast.“Thank you so, so much Evan, you're too kind.” she says ruffling my hair.“There’s no problem at all Maria, if you can save me just one slice of the cheesecake you can consider that my payment.” She laughs the wrinkles around her almond eyes deepening, “Alright, consider it done.”Janet is the cook of the house but Maria is the baker(who needs a cook and a baker? Can’t Janet just bake? Or Maria cook? Isn’t this a bit overkill
CHAPTER 18DAYLIGHTAIDENI write and sometimes I paint. At first I started with writing stories, stories of strong heroes who went off to distant lands to vanquish powerful foes and bring honor to their kingdoms. I wrote of princesses trapped in magical towers, fated to live a life dictated by their horrible conniving mother but through the power of true love and determination manage to free themselves from such a fate. One time I wrote of a ghost that haunted a village for a hundred years but that ghost was actually a misunderstood little boy longing for a friend. And then one day I got bored, behind my parent’s back I purchased an easel with a set of paint brushes and some water colors. I was terrible at first. I couldn't even draw a butterfly, but after eight years of constant practice I’m slightly less terrible. My first painting was of a butterfly with hideous wings but that was my intention, I believed that not all butterflies had to be pretty there was an ugly one somewhere ju
CHAPTER 17REPTILEELIANJanet is in a particularly bad mood today, which just means she’s extra bossy and irritable. I sigh as I wipe down the piano. Today she instructed me to clean the music room and gave me a special cleaning solution for the different instruments, a bit overkill in my opinion. However my mind isn’t on the task I’m performing but with my encounter with Clara yesterday.I climbed the stairs to the third floor with my mind racing with various possibilities, despite the fact that I haven’t done anything to get me in trouble wasn’t enough to dispel the worry that maybe just maybe she found out about my plan and the moment I step through the door I would be greeted by a barrage of policemen with angry faces. But instead I met Clara in a long silky gown and a high slit that showed off a glimpse of her long legs. She is the exact opposite of Elena. While Elena is short with a full figure, Clara is taller with smaller proportions. Not to mention one is a brown skinned teen
CHAPTER 16BED HOPPERAIDENI haven’t done anything today. I haven’t felt like it at all. Aunt Clara and I used to live in complete harmony but now I feel like we fight every five seconds. I sigh as I climb out of bed, walking to the kitchen to find something to eat. But I know food won’t heal me. I feel so tired on the inside…I just want to die.I hear footsteps just as I enter. I suppose aunt Clara has returned from golfing. I hide beside the refrigerator, as a certified coward I’m obviously not going to speak to her not yet at least. She and Elian are the only people in the world that I speak to. If I don’t talk to her then I will truly die alone.“Hello Evan, you look quite dashing, follow me this way please.” I hear her say.Evan? Who is E- “thank you so much for having me here Miss Clara.”The moment the voice sounds my heart goes into frenzy, Evan is Elian? Yes, Evan is Elian he mentioned it the day we met but why is he here?“There is no problem at all.” I hear their footsteps
CHAPTER 15DATEELIAN“Do you really have to go?” Mara asks, staring at me with huge watery eyes.“Yes my sweet princess,” I reply with a sad smile, “I have to work so I can take care of you. You guys can’t stay with josh forever you know? We will need to move to our own place eventually.” “I know but still…” she whispers more tears gathering in her eyes, “I miss you.”I sigh deeply as I pull her small frame towards me. She melts into my arms burying her face in my neck. Mart stays by the side watching us with an awkward smile; he's not a fan of physical affection. I pull him towards me anyway, holding them both in each arm. This is it… this is living, Mara and Martin my home and my life. I separate from them and reluctantly place a kiss on their foreheads as I rise. “Alright be good ok?” if I don’t leave now I feel like I never will, “If you need anything just call I’ll come as soon as I can.” Mara nods. ‘Did you get that buddy?’ I ask mart. He nods with a smile. I ruffle his hair,
CHAPTER 14BROKENAIDENI sit alone in the west garden playing with my favorite spider man toy. It's late afternoon, father is at work and mother is passed out drunk as always. These few hours are the only time I can enjoy some semblance of peace. I imagine that one day I would wake up with extraordinary powers, powers strong enough to heal my mother and make my father young forever so that we can become a happy family. The steady sound of footsteps echo loudly around me resounding inside my brain, making my heart tremble with fear; mother is awake! I quickly throw spider man behind a bush, “sorry spider man.” I whisper as I hurriedly stand to my feet.“Aiden? Aiden!? Aiden?” mother calls loudly her voice sounds hoarse as her footsteps draw closer.“Yes mother?” I reply putting on a fake smile just for her.She appears before me with long black hair in a tattered mess, her brown eyes filled with endless hatred and her small lips in a scowl. I am an exact carbon copy of her but she hate
