Two days and I was comfortable with my job.
David started me out with the basic and boring spreadsheets, but I zoomed through them. I found discrepancies in several and had them fixed. It was always only a few dollars here and there, but I knew they would add up.
Besides, math was what I was good at. I had an attention to detail that made me a good worker, and an excellent accountant. I didn't let little things slip past me.
By day three, I was put to work on more sensitive material. David instructed me to look over one of the stock reports. It was for a fund that Winthrow Financial was heavily invested in. He just asked that I give it a glance and I thought the reason was so that he could find out how competent I was at reading these kind of things.
Luckily, I had grown up looking over my father's shoulder as he read the stocks in the newspaper every morning. It wasn't just a spreadsheet full of random numbers and letters to me. No, it was like reading a different language, but one that I was surprisingly fluent in.
I grinned as I started it. If work stayed this easy, I'd be running the place in no time. I was starting to feel confident in my new life.
I had officially entered full-fledged adulthood. No more sleeping in, no more late night drinking and dancing binges with my friends. College was over. Those days of carefree irresponsibility were behind me. After weeks of interviews, I'd somehow managed to land this job at Winthrow Financial and there was no way that I was going to risk screwing it up somehow. No way. This was the opportunity I'd been waiting for. A chance to move up in the corporate world. Sure, my current role would likely be nothing more than glorified adding and subtracting, but I didn't care. I knew that there was a real future here if I worked hard enough.
The first hour of running through the ledger was easy. And then my detail-oriented brain noticed something.
“Something about this isn't right, though,” I whispered, leaning in closer to my computer screen.
The number of stocks that Winthrow owned in this particular fund was staggering. Thousands and thousands of shares. The value of them, though, didn't add up. This stock ledger had either been misprinted or was fraudulent. It was showing the value as much less than it should have been, based on the number of shares.
A frown crossed my face as I double-checked my math. I had done it in my head the first time but used a calculator now just to be absolutely certain. Sure enough, the numbers were off. I didn't know why, and I realized that maybe it was an innocent mistake on someone's part, but I had to notify David immediately.
I quickly walked to his office and knocked on the open door. “David? Are you busy?”
“Always, Jane,” he said. “But please, come in.”
“Sorry to bother you, but I was looking over that stock ledger you sent me this morning,” I said, closing the door behind me.
“And...?” he asked, spinning his chair so that he faced my direction.
“Something doesn't add up on there,” I explained, practically giddy in my excitement to show him my find. “There are some major incongruities. The math doesn't add up. There's something missing. The value of these particular stocks is much higher than what they're representing in the report.”
“Really?” he said, shaking his head. He sighed, sounding like a long suffering adult dealing with an annoying child. “That can't be, Jane. Go ahead and email me whatever you've found and I'll look it over later.”
My shoulders sagged in defeat. David didn't believe me. However, I did as he asked. I left his office and returned to my seat, sending him an email that detailed everything I had found incorrect in the ledger. I wasn't wrong about my findings, though, and I knew it. Even if David didn't see it. If there was one thing I was good at, it was math.
The rest of the day passed slowly. I sent David several more emails with other mistakes I found in the ledger, but I never heard back from him.
It seemed my amazing catch wasn't so amazing. It was probably a fake report, I decided. I was the new girl, after all. What better way to see if the new person can catch discrepancies than giving her a report full of them?
I stared at my computer, counting down the minutes until I could go find Maddy and see if she'd gotten this same task when she'd started. I could already imagine her laugh when I told her that I 'd figured it out.
In the reflection of my screen, I noticed the silhouette of a man walking down the aisle between the cubicles. He moved swiftly enough to cause the jacket of his suit to open and catch in the wind. I turned around to see who it was, more out of curiosity than anything else. As soon as I laid eyes on him, my knees became jello. Thank God I was sitting down.
What in the hell is Carter Winthrow doing all the way down here on this floor? I thought.
It was impossible not to stare. The man was gorgeous and walked with a confidence that commanded a room to do what he wanted. He was tall with a muscular frame. Maddy had been right about his eyes, too. They shot across the room, with the kind of intensity that made my heart flutter. I swallowed, as he glanced toward me. We locked eyes, but just for a moment. Then Carter stepped right past me, pushing open the door to David's office.
“David, what's going on with this ledger? I saw you updated some of the numbers. I need you to explain what happened. Now.”
From my cubicle, I could hear everything with perfect clarity. My heart was still pounding in my ears from my near encounter with the CEO. I decided I'd pretend to work, while listening in on the conversation.
“Oh, uh, hi, Mr. Winthrow,” David stuttered, clearly nervous by the sudden visit from the top boss. “Yeah, there was a flaw in the report. I noticed it this morning. Some of the numbers were off. It was an innocent mistake and everything is in order now.”
Wait, what the hell? I thought. Did David just take credit for finding that mistake? The mistake I found? What an asshole.
Carter Winthrow stood in the doorway of David's office, barely within my peripheral vision. It took all my willpower not to look over and check him out. I wanted to so badly, but I also really didn't need to get caught staring. So I kept my gaze locked onto my computer screen.
“You caught that mistake, David?” Carter asked, his voice deep and authoritative. It send a chill up my spine. “I thought I told you to let the new girl look it over.”
“How did you know?” David said softly. He cleared his voice. “I mean, I did have her look at it, but I double-checked it when she was done. That was when I found the mistake.”
“Is that right?” Carter asked. He looked like he didn't believe the man. “We'll talk later, David. Don't leave your office at quitting time. Stay late tonight. We need to talk.”
That son of a bitch, I thought quietly. David just threw me under the bus, making it sound like I didn't even notice those mistakes. I guess it wasn't just a training exercise.
I could feel my blood pressure rising. I squeezed my hands into fists and forced myself to take a long breath. The fact that I had only been on the job for less than a week meant that I had next to zero leverage. Nobody was going to believe the truth about what had really happened.
The sound of David's office door shutting caused me to jump and I looked over to see Carter standing there facing me. He strolled up, his eyes locked on mine. Good lord were they gorgeous. Bright green and focused entirely on me in a way that made my cramped cubicle disappear.
“Jane?” he said.
My hands trembled. I opened my lips to speak, but could only nod.
How the hell did he know my name?
“You're the new girl?” he asked, his eyes on me, peering into my soul.
I continued to nod, then finally managed to mumble a few words. “Yes, that's me. I'm Jane.”
Carter stepped all the way up to my cubicle. Our toes were practically touching. I brought my gaze up his body, past the front of his slacks and upward along his red tie. Finally, I craned my neck enough so that I was looking in his eyes.
For a moment, I didn't even care that the most gorgeous man I had ever seen was standing so close. I was far more worried about losing my job. David's lie had the potential to ruin everything I had worked so hard for. I became scared for my future. Out of nervous habit, I bit my lower lip. Carter's gaze dropped from my eyes down to my mouth, pausing there for a moment. I untucked my lip and as soon as I did, he looked back up.
“David tells me you didn't notice the mistake on that stock report,” Carter said softly.
“Sir, I-” I began to say, but Carter's smile caused me to stop.
“It's okay,” he said, touching my shoulder reassuringly. “David is full of shit. I saw your email to him. I know you were the one who caught those errors.”
“Really?” I asked. I felt like the world was spinning just a little too fast.
“Every company email account go through a filter. Certain things are always flagged and passed on to someone higher up.” Carter glanced around the room, then leaned in a little closer. “I saw what you sent him.”
He was so close I could feel his breath against my cheeks. The smell of his cologne wafted toward me too, masculine and sexy. I had to focus not to inhale too deeply and distract myself.
“So, I did a good job?” I whispered, looking up at him with puppy dog eyes.
Carter stood back up. He evaluated me with serious eyes. “Jane, you're the fifth person to look over those accounts. David didn't catch that mistake. No one did. Most people wouldn't have noticed something like that. But you did. You just saved that account.”
“Thank you, sir. I was just doing my job,” I stammered.
“It took a keen eye and the kind of extreme attention to detail that I thought only I possessed. I'm impressed.” He evaluated me again, his eyes looking me over from head to toe. I felt naked under his gaze, but I had nowhere to run. “Tomorrow, when you come into work, I want you to take the elevator to the top floor. You're done working down here.”
I scooted my chair back a bit. My eyes widened and my jaw practically hit the carpet. “What do you mean?”
“I want you working for me directly. You caught an error today that everyone else missed. I've been looking to find someone to double check my numbers and you've just proven yourself,” Carter said, leaning against the wall of the cubicle with his arms crossed. “You'll report to my office tomorrow morning.”
Carter's eyes slowly dropped down my body, then back up. It was an obvious once over, but I welcomed it. I wanted to be seen by him. I parted my lips to respond, but before I could, Carter said, “See you tomorrow.”
He walked off, leaving me sitting there at my desk with my mouth open. The shocked expression probably had me looking like a total fool. I watched Carter walk away, all confidence and assurance as he marched out and down the hallway.
Did I just get promoted? I asked myself, staring after him.
Not five seconds later, Maddy came running up. She grabbed my shoulders and spun me in my chair so that I faced her.
“What in the hell was that all about?” she asked, with an expression on her face that mimicked how I felt. A combination of confusion and excitement.
“I don't really know exactly,” I said, with a shrug. A slow smile started to work its way onto my face. “I guess I'm now working directly for Carter Winthrow.”
“You've been here for two days and you're already promoted?” she asked, pulling me in for a hug. “See, I knew there was something special about you.”
She congratulated me again and made me promise to get her a better office once I was in charge of things. When Maddy walked off, I turned back to face my computer. Still lingering in the air, was the faint scent of Carter's cologne. I breathed it in and closed my eyes. I thought of the way his eyes had looked me over. I began to imagine what it would be like to be one of those skinny model girls that he dated.
Now I know why so many women want Carter, I thought. He's pure masculinity.
Everything about him screamed sex. His smell, his body, his power, his eyes. Everything.
That's the kind of man I want to be with. I closed my eyes, trying to imagine the scenario. It's just too bad that the only thing he probably finds attractive about me is my ability to work with numbers.
Carter's secretary showed me to my new office when I arrived the morning. Her name was Cindy and she wasn't particularly friendly. I guess I couldn't blame her, though. I had this feeling that she had probably been trying to get a job like this for most of her career and I just showed up and stole it right in front of her eyes. On the one hand, I felt bad about it. At the same time, I couldn't help but beam with excitement. Still, I couldn't get rid of the feeling that it was all just some kind of fluke. Maybe the stars aligned or something. How was it, that just a few days into my career, I was already sitting in a corner office with a great view? I ran my fingers over the surface of my smooth mahogany desk, which wrapped around me in a half circle. The walls of the office were covered in book shelves. I planned on filling them up with books on stocks, bonds, mathematics and maybe even hide a romance novel or two in there for days when I wasn't busy. This is the
“Tell me about AgCorp and their stock.” Carter sat in his office chair, the giant windows behind him glinting in the early morning sun. He looked like a sun god, or perhaps a financial demi-god sitting there. The sun shone in his dark hair and sparkled in his green eyes. And his suit? His suit looked like it was made personally for him. It probably was, to be honest. He probably had someone in Italy making him handmade personal suites that accented the broadness of his shoulders, his lean waist, and his very perfect ass. Not that I was trying to look. I was trying to stay professional. I was working my butt off looking up stock names and historical prices. I'd learned more in the past month about investing, market strategies, and the current innovations in dozens of markets. I wanted to impress Carter. This was our routine for the past month. Each morning, I came in and greeted Cindy. Then I'd quickly check in with Carter, who was always busy
Monday morning came and I was exhausted. I'd tossed and turned for hours the night before. The clock had mocked me with each passing hour and eventually I just got out of bed. There was nothing I hated more than laying there and trying to sleep. I guessed that my sleeplessness had something to do with a restless mind. My thoughts had been turning ever since the week before when I had had lunch with Maddy. I kept thinking about what she had said, about how she would have done anything to sleep with Carter. It made me wonder if I should have been thinking the same way. I mean if there was ever a chance for me to hook up with a billionaire playboy then this was it. I'd never be this close again. When Carter stepped into my office that morning, I smiled wide but he could see the tiredness in my eyes. “You look exhausted, Jane,” he said, with his usual upbeat energy. “Long weekend?” “No, nothing like that,” I said, before taking a quick sip of my coffee. “
A week later... The look on Carter's face when he stepped into my office that Monday morning was one of shock. “You were right,” he said, before I could even greet him. “About what?” I asked. “That company,” he said, shaking his head. “The biofuel one in Oregon. Turned out, they were using it to launder money. The stock value plummeted in a matter of minutes once the news hit the public. I was able to get some of my investment back, but not all. Still lost a million bucks.” “You're kidding me?” I wasn't sure if I was more shocked at the fact he'd lost a million or that I was actually right about that company. “I'm impressed, Jane,” he said, a smile on his face. “You lost a million dollars and you're smiling?” I asked. “I'm smiling because of what I just learned about you,” he replied. “I don't give a shit about the money. I'll make it back. This incident taught me something very important about y
It was only a random Wednesday night, but for some reason, I felt like celebrating. I grabbed the bottle of Cabernet that my mom had sent me a few weeks before and poured myself a glass. I sat down in my overstuffed couch, kicking my feet up onto the coffee table. Things were really coming together for me. My job was going infinitely better than I could have ever hoped for. My apartment was finally decorated and unpacked. I had made a few friends at work. I had a lot to be grateful for. “Here's to things working out,” I said to myself, holding my glass in the air. Nobody was there to do the cheers with me, but I didn't care. I was far too happy to be brought down by that fact. I let out a long breath, letting myself sink deep into the cushions. My phone rang in my pocket and I pulled it out to see an incoming call from my mom. It was her ritual to call me just about every day and I wondered if she'd ever let me grow up. I answered of course, though.
When I arrived at work the next morning, I couldn't wait to see Carter. The move we'd made by shorting the stocks for New York Solar Company had made more money for Winthrow Holdings than anything I had ever been part of. By far. It pumped me up and gave me confidence that I hadn't felt before. I was suddenly walking with my chest pushed out and my head held high. There was a spring in my step as I stepped through the front door of the building and made my way up to my office. I was on top of the world. As the elevator doors opened, Cindy looked up from her desk. “What are you so smiley about?” she asked, raising an eyebrow. Even Cindy's negativity couldn't bring me down that day. I just shrugged as I walked past. “What is there to frown about?” “Jane,” she said, stopping me in my tracks. I spun around before heading through the double doors. “Yeah?” “Carter wanted me to let you know that he won't be in until later this afternoon.” The
When we got back to work, the TV was on in the lobby. I stopped, the familiar tickers scrolling by with numbers that usually got me excited. That wasn't what I was looking at, though. The CEO of New York Solar Company was on, and he was about to deliver a press conference. Nerves twisted in my core. Maddy paused, then touched my shoulder. “I'll catch up with you later,” she said. I nodded, but never turned from the television screen. “Ladies and gentlemen,” the man started. “I know there must be some questions about what happened this morning. We believe it to be a question of the big players in this market finally taking notice of us. Fortunately, we have a multi-year head start on this technology, and our patents make our methods proprietary.” I snorted, right there in the lobby. I had told Carter that they would say that other companies were trying to bully them out, but the notion that their tech was proprietary was ridiculous. I could think of two compan
I drove home carefully, more nervous than I had been in a long time. Carter Winthrow, one of the sexiest bachelors in the world, wanted to take me out. To celebrate. To congratulate. And, by the way he had looked at my body, to do much more. As soon as I got home, I practically tore that plain pencil skirt and blouse off before turning the shower on. I hadn't yet unpacked my vibrator, but I didn't care. As I pulled my bra off, I got a look at my body in the mirror. I had something of an hourglass figure, and I had seen Carter checking me out. My breasts were my best physical feature in my opinion. I thought about him undressing me with his eyes. I thought about him watching as I put my thumbs in the waist band of my underwear and began to pull them down. A shiver ran through my body as my panties fell to the floor and I stepped out of them. I rushed into the shower, letting the hot water flow over my body. One thing that I loved about this apartment w
Carter was still inside me as he began to stroke my hair. “So, you didn’t really tell me if you liked this bedroom.”“I do,” I said.“How would you like to share it with me?” he asked.I figured he would try to get me to move in with him. “Are you sure? That’s kind of a big step.”“So is having a baby,” he said.I thought about it. “I think I want to stay in my own apartment for now.”“Well, I can pay for it for now. That’s not a problem. But I’m going to want you to move in with me by the time the baby is born.”There he was with that patriarchal attitude again. “Or maybe I’ll spend my own money to live the same way I have been living, and you can just buy the baby some gold-plated diapers,” I said. I couldn’t help but overdo the sarcasm a little bit.He shrugged, then moved his hand to my shoulde
I hadn’t even begun to drink in the fact that Carter’s penthouse loft had a helipad before my breath being taken away by the sheer size of the apartment itself.“Carter, this is huge!” I said, looking around the place. There was a piano, a bar, and an entertainment center. That was just what I could see from the main entrance.“You want to see something else that’s huge?” he asked. I slapped his chest playfully, then moved to check out the rest of the apartment. He didn’t let me, though. He grabbed me by my waist and brought me in for a kiss.I squealed in surprise. “What’s that for?”“I know it’s been less than 24 hours since I last saw you, but I feel like so much has happened since then.” He kissed me again. “I found out I had a baby, I found out who the mole was in my company, I had my name dragged through the mud in all the tabloids-”“Carter,
The second I was in the door of the SEC headquarters, I went to a pay phone. I was surprised these things still existed.I copied a phone number from my cell phone and punched it in. It rang once before a gruff voice answered. “Who is this?” it asked me.“Carter, it’s me,” I said.He sounded relieved. “Jane. I’m glad it’s you. Somebody else got this phone number earlier and I was afraid they were calling again.” There was a pause. “Why aren’t you calling me from your own phone?”“I’m afraid it might have been tampered with,” I said. “That’s not important. What’s important is that I met with Delaney. Cindy is the mole in your organization. You have to monitor her access in general, but in specific, monitor any emails that you had with Greg about New York Solar.”“All emails are backed up on a weekly basis, and-”
“I didn’t think I’d ever see you again,” said Roger Delaney, President of New York Solar Company. I didn’t know how to respond to that. I just squirmed in my seat a little bit. He sighed. “Look, you came to me, and now you’re wasting my time. What is it that you want?” I gulped. I really wasn’t cut out for this kind of confrontation. “I... I’m pregnant,” I managed to choke out. He rolled his eyes. “Yes, I hear celebrations are in order. Did you want me to go to your baby shower or something?” I looked down at my feet. I was so embarrassed right now that I thought I could pass out. But I had to keep going. I had to. This was the only way that I could keep Carter and support my baby. I looked back up at him. “I’ve also been fired from Winthrow Financial.” He snorted. “That’s what happens when you deal with a snake like Winthrow. You end up knocked up, thrown out on your ass, and the subject of a government investigation on top of
I pulled up the text from Maddy again. You’re on TMZ right now. I tried to put myself in Maddy’s shoes. Every new piece of information in this drama, from the boat ride to my firing to the pregnancy, she had found out by seeing it on TV. I had thought about telling her about the pregnancy a few times, and it had come up against last night, when formulating the plan. Who else did you tell about you being on the boat?Carter had asked last night. Nobody, except... Except my friend Maddy,I had replied. Somebody’s leaking information to somebody, Jane. Somehow, the press or Roger Delaney keep knowing everything about us. Do you trust her? I did trust her. Even when Carter had suggested telling her about the pregnancy first, to see if she would leak it to the press or to Roger Delaney, the CEO of New York Solar Company. I was sure that it would just
I walked into the doctor’s office with a mixture of hope and dread. Hope because I’d finally be able to share the news with somebody else that I was pregnant. Dread because of all the things that would follow. Still, I had to be brave. It was all part of the plan. I had promised Carter that I’d go to the doctor’s office, and he got to pick the doctor. It still seemed a bit too patriarchal to me, but I’d go with it for now. I hadn’t been to the doctor since I had moved to New York City. This doctor’s office was right between the building for Winthrow Financial and Times Square. I could only imagine what the rent was on a place like this. It was late, almost 8 PM, so I expected the office to be dark. It was lit up like it was open 24 hours a day. The receptionist area was like any other, but I could tell that it catered to a wealthier clientele than I was used to. Everything about it seemed to scream “boutique”. I walked to the receptionist and gave her
My heart had been racing just a minute ago as Carter had pounded into my body. It had calmed down as we laid there in post-coital bliss, but now it was pounding so hard that I thought it would fly out of my chest. He laid there, looking at me like he didn’t understand what I said. My breathing had stopped and I found it even harder to speak than before, but I managed to repeat what I said. “I’m pregnant.”He swallowed. “Are you sure?”I nodded my head. “I took a pregnancy test.”I braced myself for his next questions. Are you sure it’s mine? Didn’t you say you were on birth control? Are you trying to trap me?I knew I had to give him a few minutes for this to sink in, and I vowed not to hold it against him that he had these questions. His hand moved to my tummy, touching me through the see-through fabric of the purple lingerie. Then he pushed the fabric up my body, press
After beckoning to Carter in my sexy purple lingerie, I didn’t expect to wait long after beckoning him for him to react. He didn’t disappoint me. He had his hands around me before I even got to the bed. I moaned as I felt his lips connect with my neck from behind. His hands grabbed my hips, roughly bringing my ass toward his crotch. I could feel him getting hard already. This would be our third time having sex in 24 hours, but he showed no signs of losing any of his stamina. He turned me around quickly and looked at my body. I could feel him appraising me, but I didn’t mind. His looks, always so intense, made me feel even more beautiful than his touches did. And, especially in this outfit, I knew he’d like what he saw. He licked his lips. “I knew this would look stellar on you,” he said. His eyes moved up and down, but eventually settled on my chest. I smiled. The lacy fabric was just short of see-through, and I knew he could see my excited nipples poking thr
“It’s me. Open up.” Part of me was excited that Carter actually came to see me. Part of me was still mad that he sent me home from work. Allof me didn’t want him to see the current state of my apartment. It was a mess. “Why should I?” I asked, quickly picking up a handful of dirty clothes and putting them in a hamper. “Because I want to apologize. I tried to call, but you didn’t pick up. I really do have pizza.” I smiled. I could use some pizza right about now. “Should you be seen with me right now?” I asked as I sealed up the ice cream and put it back in the freezer. “Uh, hello? I know you looked through the peephole. Didn’t you see my awesome disguise?” I laughed. “A hat? That’s your disguise?” “And a pizza. Don’t forget the pizza.” My tummy rumbled, even though I had just been shoveling ice cream into it. “How could I forget the pizza?” “So let me in before someone really does r
