Matthew had known Allison Whitney ever since they were in high school.
It wasn’t love at first sight, and nor was it an enemies-to-lovers story. As time passed, Matthew simply found himself falling in love with Allison, and it was the first time he had experienced that kind of feeling.
Born with a silver spoon in his mouth, he had a father who catered to his every need and sent him to the best schools and tutors to prepare him for inheriting the company once he became of age. This also included his father planning to introduce him to the daughter of his good friend, to let Matthew know that this was the girl he was going to marry.
Everything was already planned out for him and set in stone. Matthew eventually felt like he was simply a puppet dangling on its strings, controlled by his father whenever and however he pleased. He had no say in his future and only needed to obey the rules, to follow through with the plans his father so painstakingly prepared for his sake.
Matthew hated it, but he didn’t have any other choice in the matter.
But then Allison suddenly came into his life.
Allison Whitney was the first and only rule that Matthew broke, and it was the only thing he ever asked of his father.
“I will do everything you wish and become the best heir that you want me to be,” Matthew had said quietly, looking at his dad straight in the eyes for the first time. “I only ask that I be given the freedom to choose who I marry.”
With the help of his mother, Matthew managed to convince his father, and so he eventually entered into an unexpected marriage with Allison Whitney, a girl who had no wealth, no important connections, and no distinct place in society.
At first, Matthew was uncertain if they could make it work, with him being a point of interest in the business world and the media, but Allison was very understanding and hardworking, so they managed to live a happy life together for two years.
But perhaps it was only him who thought so, because one day, she approached him solemnly and said that she didn’t love him anymore.
Matthew knew the reason why. Allison had always been a workaholic; she would usually spend all day in the lab and come home late, never having enough time for him. She was often so engrossed and focused on her work that she made her career a priority over her own husband.
As time went by, she became known and successful in her field, and soon she became even more busy. Matthew once couldn’t see her face for months. For a long time, he couldn’t talk to his wife, couldn’t kiss her good morning or good night, or even just stare at her face and memorize her features.
The days swept by, and Matthew felt like Allison was becoming more and more like a stranger.
The only moments he got to spend time with her was when she got sick for a while and was practically banned from her workplace to rest. She had been so antsy during that period, wanting to go back to work quickly since she was desperate not to lose the big progress she developed in the past few months.
Matthew had no choice but to accept all her grumblings and lack of mood to talk.
Even though they were married, he felt so, so damned lonely.
Then the day came when she finally got the promotion that she’d been waiting for.
“I’m moving to London for a while,” she said the moment she arrived home, immediately walking towards the bedroom to pack her clothes. “I’ll come visit once a month if I’m able.”
“Wait, what?” Matthew instantly stood up from the couch, almost dropping the laptop that was perched on his lap. “For how long? When are you going? Why are you going?”
“I’m leaving in three days. I already told my superiors that I would get settled in completely by next week and begin the induction in the main laboratory.”
“…Excuse me?”
Matthew had already followed after her and was standing by the open doorway, watching incredulously as she picked through her closet to decide which clothes to bring. He felt his head grow dizzy. Things were happening too fast.
“And you didn’t even bother to consult me?” he finally managed to ask, trying to restrain the anger in his voice. “To consult me, your husband, about moving to another country for your job? And you’re not even asking me to come with you?”
Allison paused in the middle of her task to glance at him, and he felt his heart drop to his stomach.
She was looking at him as though she were looking at a stranger.
“I wouldn’t ask you to come with me. You’re already busy enough with the company,” she replied nonchalantly.
“Well, you still should’ve asked me to, Allison,” Matthew said indignantly. “You should’ve respected me nonetheless. You can’t just announce something important like this to me and expect me to accept it so easily. I’m not some robot you can control however you want.”
Allison’s eyes narrowed. “I was being considerate of you, Matt. I’ve always been considerate towards you,” she gritted out, trying to keep her tone calm and even.
“When have you exactly been considerate of me, Allison? Do you even realize that we haven’t talked to each other for months now? Do you even realize how many lonely nights I’ve spent waiting for you?”
“I don’t recall asking you to wait for me!”
“Is there a reason why I shouldn’t wait for my wife to come home?”
“You shouldn’t have bothered. You know how busy I am every day!”
“Am I not allowed to miss you?!”
That night, the conversation ended in an unsolved argument, the first big conflict they’d ever had in years. Allison couldn’t understand why Matthew focused more on her than his own job as a CEO while Matthew couldn’t understand why Allison treated her job more like her husband rather than himself.
He had told her that day that he wouldn’t let her go. He was already fed up with everything. Although he’d been angry in the beginning, he soon softened up in despair when he realized that Allison was going to leave no matter what he said.
He just didn’t want her to travel around too much, mainly because he wanted her by his side and because he would miss her even more. This caused a delay in her flight that made her furious, but the more he explained his side, the more she mellowed out, as if she was starting to understand why he was being so insistent on this matter.
But just as he thought she was about to give in, she eventually grew tired of his constant pleading and broke the devastating news to him one day.
She approached him slowly, refusing to sit down on the couch despite him beckoning her to the seat beside him. Her expression was cold, and her empty gaze unnerved him.
“I’m sorry, Mattie,” she said quietly as she looked at him. Her gaze was startlingly devoid of the love that used to be there, shining in her beautiful green eyes. “I can’t do this anymore.”
He never forgot the words she said that day. He could never forget the day she left him to move to another country, leaving him alone, divorced, and broken-hearted. His parents had been furious. His father, especially. Edward Laurier despised a ruined reputation, and he had already let it slip by once when Matthew insisted on marrying a nobody. He only agreed with it eventually because it meant that Matthew was finally willing to take over the company, but he knew very well that this would come back to bite him. And bite him it did. “Tell all the reporters that you two divorced because you’re both so busy that you don’t have enough time for each other,” Chairman Laurier said gruffly, seated behind his desk at the company. He had called Matthew here to discuss the news that broke out the moment Matthew and Allison finalized their divorce and exited the court. “Don’t you dare tell them that she’s the one who proposed a divorce first. Either tell them that you’re the one who divorced h
It took Matthew five years to move on from Allison. After a few months of agony, he decided to bury himself in his work, so he eventually climbed up to the top position in the company, proving to his people and his father that he was fully capable of handling major business deals and managing the company and all its branches worldwide. He became well-known in society as one of the youngest, most influential CEOs in the country, and also as the hottest, most eligible bachelor in the city. However, Matthew wasn’t happy at all. He simply lived through life on auto-pilot, finding work to be a proper distraction from the unending waves of sadness and emptiness inside of him. Through time, he started to understand why Allison was able to concentrate on her career so zealously; perhaps she had been depressed, or perhaps she had felt the constant need to prove herself, hence why she chose to prioritize her work and strive to become successful. Matthew didn’t know. He didn’t know anything. Ho
As though he’d been scalded by boiling hot water, Matthew wrenched himself out of Allison’s arms, spinning his entire body towards Lily in surprise. Lily approached the two of them with a puzzled expression on her face, peering closely at Matthew’s companion. “Oh, Lily,” Matthew exclaimed, nervous sweat dripping down his brow. He hadn’t been doing anything wrong, had he? It was only a friendly hug meant to comfort… Matthew realized at that moment that he had been unconsciously insensitive of Lily’s feelings. Even though Allison was his first love and his ex-wife, he should’ve restrained himself from getting close to her, at least out of respect for his current girlfriend. But just as he opened his mouth to say an apology, Lily’s face suddenly brightened, and her lips curved into a delighted smile. “Oh! I know you. You’re that talented scientist, aren’t you?” Lily said, politely stretching out her arm for a handshake. “You’re Allison Whitney. You’re also Matt’s ex-wife, right? It’s
Matthew was still shaken by the news even after they returned to their villa. They came to this faraway island for a break from their respective careers. Matthew had been plowing through company matters nonstop with barely enough rest since it was a busy season while Lily handled numerous clients a day, a product of her fame from being Matthew’s new girlfriend five years after his divorce. At first, the clients came out of curiosity to see what kind of professional Lily was, but after experiencing her gentleness and passion for her work, they eventually became her loyal customers. Chairman Laurier hadn’t been quite pleased with their decision to take a break somewhere far away, but after some convincing from his wife, Lily, and Bryce, he gradually relented and allowed them to do what they wanted for one month. “I’ll be holding the fort here for a month until you guys return,” Bryce had told them before they packed up their things to leave. “Matt, I’ll be giving you progress reports t
Lily grasped him gently by the shoulders and slowly pushed him away so that she could look him in the eyes.“Get the closure that you need, Matt. We have a lot of time on our hands. We have thousands of moments left to spend,” she told him softly, the sincerity shining in her eyes. “We have numerous days, months, and years ahead of us, but Miss Whitney… she doesn’t have that kind of luxury.“Ever since we met, you’ve been warm and attentive, and I appreciate all the efforts you made just to make me happy. But there are also times when I feel that there’s something missing inside of you, an emptiness that can’t be filled even with my help. You need to gain understanding in order to let go, right?“So don’t worry about me, and go. I know that you’ll come back to me eventually.”***That was how Matthew found himself sitting in a restaurant the next day with Allison Whitney seated right across from him. Lily had insisted on getting her phone number the day before, so that was how Matthew
Matthew felt Allison’s words echoing in his head even after she left thirty minutes ago.“I left you because I didn’t love you anymore.”“It had nothing to do with my current illness.”“Don’t worry about me. My husband will take care of me.”'So it had nothing to do with her cancer, after all.' A wry smile curved Matthew’s lips as he shook his head. 'What was I even expecting? Why did I make a fool out of myself earlier?''She must’ve been really weirded out by me back there…'Matthew sighed. Husband? Then she was married now. But why didn’t her husband accompany her to the hospital? Had she felt the symptoms so strongly, but didn’t want to worry him so she went there secretly instead? Thinking about it this way, Matthew felt a pang of sadness in his heart. He had thought that she was all alone, that she would fight her cancer by herself, so he thought that…He stopped his train of thoughts right there. 'What the hell am I even thinking? Look at me, thinking about sauntering into her
Matthew let out a heavy exhale as he hung up and let the phone drop to the bed. Two days had passed now and he couldn’t stop thinking about Allison’s wish. Granted, it was something that she had hoped for when they were still naïve young teenagers, but there was no mistaking the sincerity in her voice when she said it back then, as if it were something she held dearly in her heart. But they were 31 years old now. They were a year late. Matthew even doubted that Allison remembered it. The next morning when she said those words, she was hungover and could barely recall anything prior to throwing up. She had been embarrassed that Matthew cleaned up after her and made sure to give him her thanks by willingly agreeing to go on a date after school. She had always been such a diligent student, so he often had a hard time persuading her to go out once lectures ended because she wanted to finish her homework and nightly studies quickly in order for her to get enough sleep.'…What am I thinking
They stood in the living room area in silence with their heads lowered, unable to look each other in the eyes.“Does your girlfriend know that you’re here?” Allison asked stiffly.“No,” Matthew answered simply.“Then what are you doing here, Matt?”Although she asked him, she knew why he came. For a man of his wealth and status, it wouldn’t be difficult to do a quick background check on people as well as figure out their jobs, family relations, and addresses. After that lie she made up on the spot about a nonexistent husband, he was bound to come sooner or later. He had always hated being lied to.Allison smiled wryly at the memory.“Please stop trying to push me away, Allison,” Matthew said quietly. “I’m not here to fight with you. I just want to help you.”“And what makes you think that I need help? Or your help, for that matter?”“Because you’re sick, okay?!” Matthew cried out desperately, and the clear pain in his eyes caused Allison to take a step back in surprise. “Why won’t you
